Swearing at people in work isn't professional though, irrespective of what kind of environment you are working in. You certainly wouldn't get away with it in my workplace. Sounds like this person you choose to label a snowflake stood up to some typical alpha male bs macho behaviour, and you don't like it. Good.4 points

Sure beats my usual method of weighing my wife and then getting her to hold the bass and then weighing her again3 points

I like that they're making crossovers from various classic Fender models, but I wish they'd do it with a little more... taste? For example, I really dig the stuff RS Guitarworks is doing with some of the classic designs, like a Jazz Bass in '50s P-bass style. Just awesome! https://rs-guitarworks.myshopify.com/collections/basses/products/contour-bass-543 points

those lyrics were written down by Knopfler, almost verbatim from a conversation he overheard, as such he is singing in character. Changing the 'offensive' lyric, not only detracts from the ire towards the person being sung about, but also changes the person being sung about (80's American hair metal type). IMO of course3 points

More or less just an excuse to say what a top bloke Paul Young seems to be and what a shame to lose his wife at such a young age. One of those guys who make me wish I could sing like him (if I could sing at all).2 points

Why didn't Fender think of the RS-guitarworks 50s style jazz bass. It's fabulous.2 points

The dUg DP-3X will be a 9 volt pedal. I don't think a manual has been written for it yet as the pedal is just being introduced.2 points

New bass day: BB1025 They say you don't miss something until it's gone. Well that was very true in my case with a new 'end of line' BB425 I managed to get my hands on last year but then parted with, too soon, in a trade for another bass. I came close to getting a Vintage White ('VW') BB1025 from Rimmers earlier in the year, which was the finish that I'd wanted (the same as my former BB425, in fact), only to find that stuff that was supposed to have already sold out had, in fact, sold out! The trouble with seeing the black 1025 for trade in the FS section each time it got bumped, is that it reminded me I'd really like to get my hands on a VW BB1025! But not at the price the Yammy Store in London had listed theirs online for. @dannybuoy mentioned a little earlier in this thread that they would be willing to price match, so I thought I'd see what I could negotiate. I was in town today and met up with @CameronJ for a pedal swap (returning a loaned bitcrusher and buying a couple more Source Audio pedals off him!) and persuaded him to meet at the Yammy store. We A/B'd a new P34 on display with the VW BB1025. Why they only provide relatively under-powered Hartke amps to show off their wares, I have no idea! The P34 is indeed a lovely bass and had they had a P35 in stock I might have been half tempted, but they didn't and I managed to persuade them to undercut the Rimmers' price on the 1025 and to also include a really good quality Yammy gig bag (which seems to be a lot better than generic one included on the Rimmers' website). There was no way a P35 was going to be worth more than twice the price of a 1025 for me, which should make for an excellent gigging bass (and without being something I'll fret about the occasional ding along the way, which I probably would with a P35). There are just a few differences between the 1025 and the 425. The 1025 has a better body construction with a 3 piece body & spline joint; a better bridge; nickel rather than plastic nut which should improve the articulation on the open strings a touch and the P-pups are split blade rather than split single. That's pretty much it. The PUPs on the 425 are a P-bass on steroids; they deliver a very impressive punch for a passive bass and I found myself dialling-back the mids a touch with the 425. The 1025 pups are more balanced in that regard. So I think I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on very possibly the last new VW BB1025 for sale in the UK; I hope I've learned my lesson from letting my 425 go, too soon, and hold on to this one for a fair bit longer!2 points

Given that he's not done a lot with the guitar since it was dropped a couple of years ago I've decided to go with 9s. I spoke with my mate Feritt at Foulds in Derby. After we'd talked through the merits of 8s, 9s and 10s he sold me a set of machine heads for around £15 and some strings for £5. The machine heads are of a good standard he says because he's used them before. We reckoned it would be better to go with the light strings and make it as easy for the lad as possible. The set shown has a spare top e. Not a bad thing since the 0.009" is the most likely to break. Whenever we asked him about getting the guitar fixed he would go quiet about it. I have a feeling he got a severe telling off from his dad about it and has been reluctant to go near it since. Today is his fifteenth birthday so it's time we got it fixed for him so he can have a proper go and if it isn't for him, he's got a good guitar to sell and put the money towards some of his sports activities. The old tulip machine heads are packed up in the pack from the new heads and will do for spares. The lad's granddad Jack says he might have them for a uke build. The new ones pop in nice and snug after I clean out the holes with a 10mm auger bit. It turned out that the older heads had a slight taper down from 10mm and there was a bit of crap in there from paint prep at build. 9 to 42s with a spare 9 thrown in Replaced full set of machine heads Full restring Polished frets Cleaned fretboard with lemon oil Checked wiring (good) Tightened nuts at each pot as one was quite loose and the others finger tight only Cleaned, polished and buffed entire instrument It sounds great and that's just through my bass rig. A light refurbish for £20, not bad.2 points

You realise everybody else is discussing this casually and you're the one who's overreacted? I would have a think about that before labelling anyone a snowflake.2 points

But would you be offended if they didn't change the line? My band changes the homophobic lyric in Dire Straits' Money for Nothing. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a homophobic insult used in that context. However, if the op is referring to "I look all white but my dad was black" then unless I'm missing something in context or other lines I don't find this offensive, it's not saying being black/ white/ mixed race is good, bad or better one than another or giving an insult. Society still has a problem with race and mixed race and calling that out to think about is no bad thing... Unless I'm completely misunderstanding.2 points

Always had time for Steve Winwood, his music and his bands, and some years ago I met him by chance at a christening. So really, I should now tell you what a terrible twunt he was. However, he was charming, urbane, funny, showed a genuine interest in what I was doing musically and we chatted for some time. Sorry.2 points

Another useless bit of Ruts trivia but guitarist Paul Fox played drums for me a few times in a jam band I was in circa 2007, just before he died. He got up and did Babylon's Burning, flicking everything to full on a 40w Fender tube amp - it was the loudest most punk rock I ever saw.2 points

WELCOME TO THE YAMAHA BB MEGA-THREAD! POSSIBLY THE MOST POPULAR BC BASS THREAD EVER! History of the Yamaha BB Bass – Workhorses That Became Thoroughbreds - Bass Musician Magazine, The Face of Bass This thread originally started when the new Yamaha 3 series were announced in early 2017, this has turned into a bit of a 'hub' thread for discussions on all matters related to Yammy BB and there have been a LOT of really helpful contributions and discussions on these much loved basses (as well as plenty of banter and banality) along the way. Given that we are now over 9k posts, nearly 1M views and 170 followers, I thought it might be useful to add some sort of index in case you had a particular query, which had already been discussed. Predecessor thread (2011-13): Yamaha BBs - Bass Guitars - Basschat Original Post (March 2017) Paid a visit to the Yamaha store in London on Monday to check out the BB1025 which came highly recommended by BCs (see thread "Best 5 string you've ever owned"). Lovely low action and really good solid build, but not too heavy (important consideration for two hour gigs!). The big news is that it was about to be replaced by a new, slightly thinner, BB1035 model** which are currently being shipped to the UK. As a result Yamaha were willing to knock 17.5% off the normal selling price of this much loved bass and include a gig bag, set up, 12 month service and free shipping (they even managed to locate possibly the final Yamaha store copy of the Tobacco Brown Sunburst finish I'd got my eye on, in Germany!). It was hard to refuse such a good sales pitch! So if any of you are after a BB1025, now is as good a time as any to pick up one at a very good price! (And I see that Gear4Music have discounted a BB1025 Black to just £599, over £200 off their normal selling price!). **Postscript: as we all now know they never did release a BB1035 (!)1 point

Ok, very very begrudgingly i am putting my beloved USA Ampeg SVT2 Pro up for sale, simply because i have found something equally as heavy and grunty that fits my band and me a little more than the Ampeg does at this moment in time. (which i never though i would hear myself say). This amp has served me well over the last few years and has never skipped a beat. It has done probably 40+ shows with me since i have had it and is a real tour grade monster. It has just come out of a service from Aston Electronics in Stone (Staffs) with a new set of Tung Sol 6550 power tubes and a full check over and clean bill of health. It comes with a Rhino live in flight case that is as tough as the amp itself. This thing is not light. i repeat, not light. Weighs in at about 47kg with the case. Its never been a problem for me as i tour with a van, have band mates to help load it and the biggest sound on the planet is worth carrying. I will not courier this bad boy, i want the buyer to come to Stoke on Trent to pick it up from my studio so they can check it all out and be happy before going away and living a better life knowing that you now own the greatest amp of all time. Either that or can happily look at meeting within a distance. I travelled from Gloucester to Newcastle upon Tyne then back to Stoke to get this thing when i got it! bumf form the Ampeg website RMS Power Output (4 Ohms): 300-Watts RMS Power Output (2 Ohms): 300-Watts Preamp: Tubes (4 x 12AX7, 1 x 12AU7) Driver Tubes: 1 x 12AX7, 2 x 12AU7 Power Amp: Tubes (6 x 6550) Tone Controls: 3-Band Mid Tone Control: 5-Position Graphic EQ: Yes, 9-Band Ultra Low/High Boosts: Yes Balanced Line Out: Yes, Pre/Post (transformer) Effects Loop: Yes Preamp Out/Power Amp In: Yes Slave Out: Yes Dimensions (W x H x D inches): 19 x 7.5 x 15.75 Weight: 70 Pounds Any other questions let me know Cheers Will1 point

Top tip for those struggling with their bathroom scales why trying to get the weight of their bass, bought myself one of those suitcase weighing devices for £5, just wrap the strap around the headstock and lift, job done ✅1 point

*NOW TRADED* Looking to trade this bass for a 4 or 5 string Precision or good copy of similiar(ish) value. Based near Bath/ Wiltshire area. This is a 1999 stingray. Well played but all working perfectly. About a year ago I had a glockenheim 3 band preamp professionally installed which on this bass sounds immense!! Its seen a bit of action with dings, chips and cracks here and there on the body. Nearly all of these which are on the body are on the top, bottom or back of the bass so it still looks in pretty good shape from the front. None of the issues are structural, or deep- more chip and finish cracks. There is a small ding in the neck which was professional filled, apart from that the neck is all good and plays nicely. Weight on my bathroom scales is about 5kg....(not sure of their accuracy but it ain't a light bass- well balanced though and perfectly manageable with a decent strap) The reason I'm selling it is simply that I've settled on another bass for all my live work and I really want to get a precision for recording. Don;t really want to see it go but can't afford both right now. Its a great bass, a lot of bass for the money- as long as you are not to worried about it being road worn! There is a soundclip under the photos - stingray wav . It was recorded direct into the computer with the eq set flat. Fingerstyle with the phase selector to the right, slap with the selector to the left..... please excuse the cod funk playing...... stingray.wav1 point

This looks like a fantastic cab Cameron - I love the concept of a 12" and 6" speaker and at 33lbs weight this is incredibly portable; I would have definitely wanted to A/B this against a VK 210 when we met up at Bass Gallery in Camden, if you'd had it up for sale then. I'm not the least bit sure which one would have won out; I suspect it would have been the toss of a coin! Knowing you, this will have been really well looked after - it looks pretty 'mint' in the pics? I think these are around £700 new, so it's on at a very fair price. Someone is going to get themselves a great cab. And I have no hesitation in recommending Cameron as a great person to deal with.1 point

Could be. With the new Line 6 HX showing at GuitarGuitar at £440 (RRP at 540) any single pedal at £400 is going to be a non-starter. I know I'm a Helix fan boy but I've got DG and other expensive pedals too, but most of them I bought before Helix. If I was looking now the HX looks to be a far better choice than any £400 single pedal. The specs are superb.1 point

I also prefer this proposed new shape but also wonder whether the top horizontal cutaway - i.e. opposite the lower waist you are planning to deepen for knee comfort - should also be made slightly deeper. i think that may look a bit more balanced and will complete the new shape.1 point

Take out 'Chapman Guitars' and insert any other brand and that is pretty much the standard quote for a press release for nearly every signature guitar or bass ever made.1 point

I think the public have already kicked up a fuss about this (I'm guilty of jumping on the bandwagon!) You're not alone in thinking that they may not be great bed-fellows; but if instead of a switch with 50:50, if it was a blend then that could maybe work by allowing folk to add in a touch of fuzz to the drive or vice versa; and enabling a really full spectrum of dirt sounds? It seems churlish to deny folk the choice, even if they choose not to go for it, when you have the two pedals in the same box?1 point

Hi there, Thought you may be interested to hear about my latest job at 'Hamilton: An American Musical' which is playing at The Victoria Palace theatre, London. It's a hip hop musical and I get to play 4 instruments on it! My main bass is my trusty Overwater 5-String Jazz bass; I also play a 4-string Lakland Hollowbody bass strung with flatwounds and played with a pic; I play my double bass with it's newly fitted 'Low C Extension' (for the super low notes needed for this style of music) and also an Artruria Keylab 25 controller keyboard for the synth bass stuff. It's a demanding show but I'm really enjoying it, and the songs written by Linn Manuel Miranda! I'll upload a picture of my pit set-up.. It's a lot of fun! Cheers, Ian1 point

forgot to mention.. with light strings the nut has to be spot on - or there will be zero chance of staying in tune at the lower frets. The following method has served me well for years... 1) fret string a the 3rd fret 2) tap string onto the top of the first fret (the wire itself), you will almost certainly feel the string move ( too much clearance) before you hear a metallic click. 3) very carefully lower nut slot (keeping the break angle) until you feel no movement but you still hear a click as you tap (any further is to far and will fret buzz). Err on the side of caution here until confident. 4) repeat until all strings are at optimum.1 point
