  1. One of the bands I've played with for a number of years only plays about that many gigs , advert seems reasonable for me , ideal for a busy person who gigs for fun and can't commit to a full on musical project

  2. I have just spent some time catching up on a very moving thread, not too big to admit I even had a little cry. It makes me think of how this community has developed over the years, how it has grown, thrived and become the great place it is today. Made by the people that visit it. This in turn makes me think of some of the great members we have lost, snatched by time, illness or other causes. This forum will remain a place where you are remembered, some by many, some by few but you will be remembered. A salute to those we have lost, you remain in our hearts always!

  5. For sale is my ACG J-Type 5-string, No. 0078. I bought it on here last year, and it's a beautiful thing - the only reason I'm parting company with it is I just use my other basses more, and this deserves to be played and enjoyed! All the original specs are still on Alan's website here - http://archive.acguitars.co.uk/portfolio/0078-j-type-5-string/ It's in really excellent condition. For the purposes of full disclosure, the only marks I can find are a couple of small scratches on the back near the control cavity cover, and two tiny marks on the fingerboard between the 2nd and 3rd fret, which you can't feel, and can barely see. These all pre-date my ownership. I replaced the original EQ01 filter preamp with an East Uni-Pre. The bass balances beautifully, and has great resonance and sustain, along with a huge tonal range from the pickups and preamp. UK shipping is included in the price, as is a Stagg lined hard case to ship it in if required. You're welcome to come and try before you buy - I'm just off the A3 near Woking in Surrey. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades. NOW SOLD.

  6. I dont know about that. There's a lot wrong with The Guardian, but at least it's not pushing a rabid swivel-eyed Brexit agenda and a return to Victorian no-welfare serfdom, as favoured by certain right wing tax-evading billionaire newspaper owners...

  7. I think you've pointed out and maybe made me realise I have a problem! Overwhelmed by GAS!! - The mini board did exist for a short while. But it's demise I blame on my local music shop offering Helix LT for interest free credit. Mini board has since been consigned to the To Do list and I haven't used it since. But so far, LT hasn't had a fair share of really being used yet either. Two projects never happened and really it's overkill for my function band.. hmmm... or maybe it isn't, I just need to spend more time with it ha ha!! My mind wanders and thinks, "well instead of a big board and a little board why don't I just settle on one medium sized board instead?" - Which could have been the B3n, Boss MS or of course now HXFX. Deciding between each as there's at least one pedal I will always keep at the start of my chain. Maybe this isn't a post for the effects forum, but I suspect that my inability to be happy with my gear is due to the short lived fix of new toys... I have zero problems with basses. My Go To bass is spot on. Pedals? oh dear me!

  8. Actually to be fair when I left school in the 70s I was able to get a job that paid enough for me to live independently. I think that would be next to impossible today and I'd probably end up dead in a ditch within a week. It's heartbreaking that young people now have to live with their parents for years on end because they cant afford to move out. It prevents them from becoming true adults, imho. I think that may be part of the problem.

  9. Just form a slight listen that last clip shows the mids/high end that I`m after. I`ll have a proper listen later on, but this really seems like it will be the all-in-one pedal that I`ve been waiting for. Drat, more expense

  11. For the DIYers among us, Julian Pohler (Mr. Shalltechnik04 - the guy behind the Guma Drive, Guma Antique and Growling Krizzly kits) is bringing out a combined HPF/LPF + DI kit soon called "Vong" (no idea what Vong means). I've asked him to keep me posted on when it's to be released.

  12. All fender body shapes. Boring, unimaginative and definitely unattractive! Add to that most single cuts but I like the Les Paul shape. Oh and the Warwick basses with the dildo top horn!

  15. I don't like natural finishes or sunbursts, slab body basses, body-binding, headless, single cuts, non-cloverleaf machine-heads, anything with more than five strings, things that look like coffee tables. Basically this :

  17. As a man of a certain age, I'll always have a soft spot for the 1980s SB range and also the Integra models that Billy Gould used on The Real Thing. I've got an old Japanese (1978) Primary P-bass; granted it's really just the body and neck that remain original (everything else was shot), but it's a very robust well made bass.

  19. I seem to remember an Ibanez magazine advert on the back cover of either Guitarist or Guitar World for an Ibanez Soundgear SR950 in transparent teal. It was made to look like it was on a lab table with dorky scientists around it. I have searched online but alas to no avail. Of course fiding a copy with this ad in is pretty much impossible but if anyone could scan it or indeed confirm such an advert DID exist, at least I'll know it wasnt a figment of my imagination. Of course, it set me off on a lifetime lead of GAS for this particular specimen !!

  20. Great early Fodera NYC (1996). Plays like butter and sounds clear as maple can with a strikingly smoothness and warm full organic bass. Fully original with Lane Poor pick ups and D-tuner. Low action, no fret buzz, truss rod and electronics are working perfectly. Optically there are two spots: at the side some playing wear and a crack in the finish around the controlling area. Nothing that influences sound or playability. This bass has that Fodera vibe, whatever that is: it is a 100% Fodera. Other than the later NYC’s this very early NYC was built entirely by Fodera in New York. Open for trades (Sadowsky, Alleva Coppolo, WAL, Fender 70’s maple Precision, Pangbourne, Ampeg SVT3 Pro, Sadowsky SA200...)

  22. Such a great amp. In terms of micro amps, this is the best I have had (Puma 900, TH 500 and various Markbass). I have been using one for a number of years with a Berg CN212 and it punches well above its weight.

  26. The OP asks about protecting speakers "etc" so I do not think that excludes variable frequency high pass filters, which I agree only cut at 12dB/octave, but are much more versatile than a fixed frequency device cutting at 36dB/octave. In my case, my reflex cabs were designed using WinISD, and the ports are tuned in the low 50s, although I play a 5-string. According to WinISD, the speakers could be damaged by a strong 30Hz signal, but adding a 12dB/octave filter tuned to 40Hz removes that risk, so I use an FDeck clone for speaker protection, and where necessary, I increase the turnover frequency to get rid of boominess. In my experience, using a pair of Jack 10s, or a pair of reflex 10s, you can take out most of the bottom octave before the sound starts to get 'bass-lite'. David

  27. I think they use them as salad garnish liberally spread around a roasted swan, they then add the blood, sweat and tears of ex-servicemen as dressing. After dinner entertainment is usually scratching the Queen's head of a pound coin. Here's a belter from the Viz archives:

  30. Oh I wouldn`t be looking to change my sound at all, but if this little dude can reproduce it then it has to be a goer. It`s that little that it wouldn`t be any trouble to still carry my current gear about to gigs as well, but on flights etc so much easier to just take this.

  34. Probably the Thumpinator then. However as has also been said check that there isn't a device in your signal path already doing this first. I'm not sure about the Broughton pedal, you'd need to try it, but for me looking at the spec 12dB/oct isn't steep enough to be as effective as the Thumpinator.

  38. I'm not sure that I agree with that - if your sound is boomy due to a hollow stage, and HPF can tame the boom, similarly if you want more punch and less mud, an HPF plus bass boost can fix that for you. In both cases you can hear the difference. David

  39. This is the final version of a board that' been in progress now for a few months. M5 wasn' getting used so it' made way for the Zeus in the loop of the gr2. All source audio pedals are in the volume loop as they can be switched on and off via midi. Powered by a pp2+ and a fuel tank under the board. The hub is under there too.

  42. +1 for the Thumpinator. Having read thread after thread from the legendary Dynamic Cab Duo Phil & Stevie I became more aware of the theory behind the effectiveness of HPF. At the time I was using Fender Rumble 500 head into one or two Basschat mk1 cabs. The HPF Thumpinator had a marked impact on the performance of my rig, tightening and cleaning up the bottom end without any loss of low end bass. If your amp does not have an HPF on board the I would recommend using /getting one.

  43. I have a Thumpinator. I can't say I can tell any difference in tone apart from less cone movement but it makes me less afraid to crank my amp up! You already mentioned the amp aspect but worth noting that plenty of amps such as Genz Benz already feature a fixed HPF so a separate one would be unnecessary. If you typically push your amp/cab to its limits to get enough volume then you may find one beneficial. Plus it gives you an excuse to get a pedal board and find more pedals to connect to that power supply!

  44. A beautiful natural 70's reissue Fender Jazz with Hiscox hard case - Japanese built, 90s serial number (A034351) with a wonderful tone. A few buckle marks and knocks on the headstock but nothing at all bad or out of the ordinary for a guitar of this age. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you'd like to arrange a viewing - I'd prefer collection from my flat in southeast London but happy to look into a courier if you'd like to ship it further afield.

  46. just throw my two penneth in, it's a very loud little cab on it's own, punchy and well defined, all depends on how loud the rest of your band are and the environment you play in of course. I had one with a compact and the two together were massive, I did however use the midget at quieter rehearsals on it's own and it was grand, a-b'd against a big baby I'm unsure, the big baby has more output and the tweeter as well, but the midget is a damn fine cab, one of barefaced best and if you find it's not enough on it's own another midget or a 1x10 would cure that, good luck
