They said they'd retired, but now there's film of Dirk Lerxt and Pratt rehearsing together again and sounding, well, remarkable. Perhaps they'll surprise us with a reunion tour? Fingers crossed. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2005220929507190&id=12029662730659972 points

Had a great time nice, nice to meet some new people and catch up with the old. Too many nice basses to be comfortable!2 points

The HPF is highly valuable as an EQ tool as well though. If you set it to cut at 100 Hz and boost the bass control at 30 or 50Hz the net result may be a boost at something like 60-200Hz depending on amount of bass boost and details of you bass control's response curves, with a steep dropoff below the bass peaking. Voila, you've just changed everything about how you tailor your low end. By way of example, here's what happens in one of my amps when I set the bass control at 6/10 (a mild boost), then sweep the HPF over its entire range, which in my case is something like 25-130Hz.: So there's your boost in the low mids, if you want it, although a mild gain tweak may be needed too. The beauty of this approach is that you can tailor your bass EQ around specific room nodes that account for much or all of that "boominess" we all fight against so often. In practice this is a lot easier than it looks at first blush, at least IME. It's a very well known old school approach to EQ, as seen in classic Pultec EQs for instance. But if you just want to kill out of band mush, all good to that as well.2 points

I had a gig last night at a venue out of town (Aberdeen) where they have decent equipment, so this time I did not bring my own in order to make transport easy (we're an 8-piece). I had played there once before, and I used my own gear that time, as it was a weekend of gigs for which I already had my stuff. They had a Hiwatt 200 tube head and matching 810 cab onstage. I like 810s. I like how with relatively low volumes you still 'feel' the air moving. But I struggled to get a sound I liked out of that thing. I had to turn down the bass a lot and boost treble and mids... so I suspect this is much like the Orange Terror heads where flat is mids&treble all the way up and bass all the way down. But even then... it felt far too woofy. I guess if we were a dub band I might have liked it better... I missed the sound of my Mesa D800+ and the two Barefaced Two10 stacked vertically. That's what I used last time, and I could still feel the air moving but it sounded great, powerful, defined... well, at least when the trombone player allowed me. He likes my setup a lot and often just stands in front of the mini stack, smiling, playing his trombone while humping an invisible bear2 points

Good move. I'm not sure when production ceased. I bought it new at the start of 1990, the serial no dates it as late 89, which makes sense as they had to order it in. I know the later models changed the PUPs to EMG & then they stopped doing the PJ config not long after. The bass was originally black but 7 years ago, I decided to strip it down. I had intended on painting it, but when I saw the grain, I decided to oil & wax it. Here's a link to some pics of that process... https://flic.kr/s/aHsjuw23Lc There used to be an Ibanez website with loads of info about discontinued instruments, but I can't find it just now.2 points

I've been playing about 45 years now, never put my bass through any FX and no one has ever suggested that I should. What did he feel was missing from your sound that a pedal would cure?2 points
-
Also depends on what the requirements of the band are, other bassists present might have though "thank god he isn`t using a rake load of effects that would have really facked that song up".2 points

If the drummer has to carry the kit and a PA round, what is the advantage over a regular kit? I tire very quickly of prima donnas who insist on having "their sound" on stage to the detriment of everyone else's. If any band member can't understand that the overall sound of the band is more important than what they personally sound like, I'd be getting rid of them or walking.2 points

If you’re just playing four chords then perhaps, but I find a quick glance now and then is necessary when reading tricky music, or jumping up to do high fills etc.2 points

Picture of tonight's gig (well technically last night's gig) . Anyone mention heft? He he .2 points

Are you running it off the front pickup only? If not, try that. Below low A will sound muddy. I’d probably only play down there with the BOD if playing mostly clean signal with a small amount of sub rolled in to beef it up. Playing the soloed sub voice down that low isn’t terribly musical-sounding.2 points

I was talking about a re-spray of a bass body. Why on earth would I be changing the subject to spraying a car? FFS2 points

Chowny CHB1 Hollow Body £300 £280 now sold Purple Burst. 31” scale. Fitted with TI flats. Ebony fingerboard with crown inlays see http://chownybass.com/product/chb-1-2018/ Excellent condition - as new. I bought this about a year ago and used for a couple of big band gigs. It was real hit with the band – great sound and lovely purple colour..But I've converted to double bass so no longer needed. No case I'm afraid – so I'd prefer local pickup or meetup. Bit nervous about sending a hollow body. Im in North Essex but willing to drive a bit to meet up. Trade wise...well I'm looking to get a better double bass or doubler amp and could add cash....or maybe a compact light weight cab1 point

So I was asked to be a part of Tyranni Flock, the jazz/fusion group of a friend of mine who is a keyboard player. He initially asked me to do his graduation concert, but we're planning on doing some jazz festivals now. I like these videos. Some sloppy intonation on the first video but overall, it's pretty decent if I may say so http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV0avwvV2No http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og2_-Se3ZZ4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SddgixjqJpA1 point

I made several deals with Uros, sold an Aguilar DB680 and bought it back a while later, also sold him a Jule Demonique. Always a pleasure to deal with him. Fast payment, good communication, everything went smooth. Recommended basschatter for sure. Would be happy to deal with him again. Thanks Uros :-)1 point

Just wanted to say thanks to Mike and the Scrumpy crew for another great bash - really appreciated the organisation of this and the lovely food. I'm looking forward to next year already!! It was great to meet up with people I met last year and to put some faces to names of others I have seen on the forum. Day went far too quickly for me and I didn't get to try half the things I would have liked to! The 1x12 shoot out was very interesting but I missed the 1x12" build as I was too busy chatting. As usual, there was lots of different and interesting kit. It was great to chat to Michael Gillett again - really interesting chap and lovely basses. And some cracking Markbass gear too - Marcus Miller heads and 1x12 cabinet took my fancy. I carried someone's (Norm's?) 2x15 Barefaced cab in - one handed carry - ridiculously light. I have to say thanks for all the positive comments I got on the basses I took, especially on the fretless one; I'm glad folk liked them. To hear what the fretless one actually sounds like in the hands of people than can actually play fretless was really rewarding for me. I need to practice (a lot!!!). For anyone that has thought about going but hasn't, you really should no matter what your ability or kit. This is such a friendly event in a lovely location. Thanks again to everyone for a really enjoyable day. Jez And I won a cracking strap in the raffle - really chuffed with that!1 point

Ok - they're on! The bass I put them on is recently new to me & previously had flatwounds on, so I can't really do a comparison. Helpful video on the Newtone website with a tip of bending the round core strings at the right place before cutting. They feel slightly 'tackier' compared to other nickelwounds I've played, but that could just be their newness. They feel good though & more importantly sound good too! Obviously can't speak for their longevity yet, but if they last half the time as the DR's then no worries as they are half the price! So far so good. A pic of the bass they are on;-1 point

I not sure if this questions been asked (5 pages in) but why doesn't the drummer use a 'proper kit' sounds like he's trying to get the same vibe from an electronic kit as an acoustic one, sometimes people can't see the wood for the trees1 point
-
Sir, that is stunning. Please can you tell us what that bass is? We can see you've changed the bridge and pups, but what was it originally?1 point

Just like my Status Electro II 6 Jonas Hellborg model from November 2001 in pristine condition : The low B here is very well defined with the Thomastik JR (nickel roundwound) fitted for the moment. I'll put some Fodera stainless steel roundwounds later (medium scale as it's a 82 cm scale, Jonas Hellborg being Swedish, the scale is in metric measure which gives 32 9/32 inches scale in imperial measure).1 point

Indeed, with IEMs, the monitor mix generally remains static - or at least in the ballpark - between gigs. Just recall the mix on the desk and you just have foh to worry with. Better still ditch all amps and you'll only have to eq for the room. Drummers and guitarists. Always the pain in the donkey you can rely on.1 point

Certainly seemed that way last night, and they were enjoying themselves, not checking to see who was watching them. They were great fun to play for, hope they'll be there next time too!1 point

Don't like to say I told you so, but... well... I did. In any normal band the drummer would have been told to take a hike with this attitude. In this band he's the band leader's son so don't expect much to change any time soon.1 point

I don't know why but whenever I read the word 'peccadillo' which, to be fair, isn't that often, I always get these images in my head in true Reggie Perrin fashion.1 point

#bassurbanmyth 30+ years of playing active basses, changing batteries every 9-12 months whether needed or not. Neither this nor any of the rest of the “I’d never have an active bass...” horror stories have ever happened to me.1 point

That relic was not done well, I would definitely not pay more for that. Why are we talking about respects etc. The most obvious thing is to get it attached to your towbar and drag it around a bit. You never order just one chip from the chippy, get some more, and gravy to go with1 point

You can go cheaper without going lower quality. Thomann now offers it's take on the Pedaltrain, it's branded Harley Benton Spaceship. they have diferent sizes, the boards come with gigbags included and they make bundles with PSUs. https://www.thomann.de/gb/cases_for_guitar_effects_guitars.html?sw=harley benton spaceship They also have them with hard cases. Just got one for myself and it looks and feels well made and roadworthy.1 point
