Just got in from a village pub festival in south Oxfordshire. I wasn't really expecting much from it, but it was exceptionally well organised and run, so was a pleasure to play at. Quite a good weekend, overall, and tomorrow's a second 'Sunday' so should be able to catch up with my mates locally down the pub before the wife goes back to work on Tuesday. Which also happens to be her birthday (one of those that have have a zero in them, too) so I've suggested she doesn't make any plans to cook dinner that night!4 points

Close harmonies live always give me shivers too. Alison Krauss and the Union Station do it really well. Also the Sheepdogs, a Canadian "retro-rock" band who deserve to be better known. (good topic, sorry for going ot again!)3 points

I thought quite the opposite; a high level of virtuosity, coupled with a fine sense of timing and an original enlargement of the tonal range of the solo instrument. Full-on admiration of the work accomplished and a very enjoyable listen. Thanks for posting; it goes some small way towards reconciling my ears to the horrors of the original post.2 points

After all the deliberations and colour changes there’s something about it that I don’t like whether it’s the pickguard shape/colour I’m not sure, but I’m going to be putting a new pickguard on it and make it into a P/J instead I’m thinking Orange will look good2 points

Simply amazed this is still here - this is a high-end, through-neck MIJ bass from the early 80s, excellent hardware, build quality on a par with any Aria Pro SB or Ibanez Musician and a ridiculously rare model of what is an uncommon bass to start with. It has a few cosmetic & electonics details (I hesitate to call them "issues") that barely qualify it as a project. The only reason I'm not all over this myself is that I already have a version of the same bass, and I'd sooner see someone get a crazy bargain than buy it myself, tidy it up & flip it for 3 times what Ash is asking. But bloody hell, I'm tempted.2 points -
Dual-Coil 51 Precision Pickup Ordered one of these from Jess Loureiro. I really like the big bottom end and full-range, fast-attack sound you get from a good 51-style P pickup, but there are times when I'd prefer the enhanced low-mid push and high-mid snap you get from the 57-type split P pickup. I don't want to carry two basses, so I'm hoping the new pickup will give me those enhanced mids, BUT with the fast attack you get from having one pole piece per string. Suh-weet! My plan is to install a toggle switch on the control plate so I can switch between series and parallel, i.e. 57-type and 51-type sounds. Has anyone done this, and what was the outcome..?1 point

A fine example of a 2008 Mexican Fender Jazz. Plays really well lots of MOJO. I bought this as a backup but just isn't being used. I have made some modifications. Its fitted with Aguilar 70's pups, A hipshot X tender, Schaller strap locks and Elixir strings. The upgrades give the bass a greater range and tonal options. It is what it is folks. The Irish folk band im on we do a version of Gulf coast highway. It's not the bass line. it's the audience reaction when our harmonies come together both vocally and the violins. It sends shivers up my spine.1 point

Just got it, it was the Pownall Arms in Bramhall, every thursday evening back in the second half of the 70s. He'd always make time to talk with us and encourage our musical aspirations. So I understand exactly what you mean, and it's good to know he is still playing and hasn't changed. I'll be playing at the birthday bash for the harp player in one of my bands in a week or two, he'll be 75, and still playing (gigged with him last night).1 point

I have both and have owned the Keeley, Diamond, and EBS beforehand. I thought the Cali was the comp I was searching for, with the blend and HPF letting me even out the tone but still let of a lot of low end thump through. But it has been dethroned by the underdog, the Spectracomp. The stock preset at 8-10 o'clock on the dial is just perfect for me. 6 knobs on the Cali was always pretty taxing to dial in just right, just enough rope to hang yourself and too many knobs to think about. The Spectracomp is like someone took the most advanced multiband compressor on the market and got a top studio engineer to tweak dozens of parameters to perfection for typical bass use. They nailed it. No noise that I can detect with the stock preset either (others may vary) unless you crank the compression knob. Last time I A/B'd them, the Cali was noisier in fact, however it wasn't a fair test as there were other things in the chain and the Cali was on a daisy chain with a couple of analog drive pedals. Of course this is but one opinion and there are plenty who will think the Cali slays the TC. You'll only know for sure if you try both out yourself!1 point

So, I've been doing some testing with 2 P pickups (one from a 4 string thomann kit build and the Bill Lawrence P46) and the cheapo big pole J from AliExpress and finally decided on this last one (more on that in my TB thread about this, don't want to hijack too much). Here's a quick pic... Carving was a mix of my Skil rotary tool, chisel, drill, files and sanding (don't have a proper router -nor the plunge adapter for my rotary tool-), still came out very decent. Here are some samples of the 9 different tone settings it now has, in the following order (coil 1 being closest to bridge): - COILS 1 and 2 (STOCK, typical Musicman): parallel, filtered series, series - COILS 1 and 3 (jazzy, sorta'): parallel, filtered series, series - SINGLE COILS: 1, 2, 3 (this last one is the P'ish one, new pickup soloed) EDIT: sounds better explained in vid...1 point

My amp has all the settings at 12 O/C, I plug straight in with no effects and I play my bass, really quite badly. Sometimes my duo partner tweaks one or two of those controls, she doesn't even bother telling me what she's doing anymore. Almost everything else bass related I run past the infinite wisdom and knowledge of the Basschat collective, via that wisdom I've found the perfect bass and the perfect amp for me and I learn so much on here, it's so cool. So I too feel very random and amateur indeed but I also know that if I get in any kind of bass quandary I have this incredible resource to hand... *sheds tear, waves hankie at brave husband from sylvan garden as he heads out over the Channel in a Spitfire* Fade to black during Lark Ascending.1 point

If you keep adding dye eventually you get to the point where you obscure the grain of the wood more and more, without necessarily getting any darker. You reach full saturation of colour. It's almost like applying more and more coars of paint - the colour doesn't change. Darker, beyond a small range, can only be achieved using a different blend of pigments.1 point

If you want real clarity, attack and a super clean sound, you need a lot of headroom/power. You want whatever you use to be working well within itself and not straining in any way - that's when dirt/compression starts to make its presence felt. I'd be looking at a high quality pre' with a serious PA power amp (think something like Lab Gruppen) driving Barefaced, Greenboy or similar cabs. Not cheap, but will do the job properly.1 point

I've been in a band with a few mediocre guitarists with notions. Luckily I've played with good drummers and I just pounded out the bass until the guitarists got his stinky poo together between making mistakes etc. As the end of the gig we usually got praised etc with the guitarists beaming. For all its complexity its an instrument that you can get away with. I find whenever I slip up on bass its REALLY noticable.1 point

I joined a ska band about a week ago, had my first gig with them on Saturday. A quick 45 minute set at an indoor event, it was an ideal introduction. Had a whale of a time, loved it. They have a big following and so there was a very decent crowd, all up and dancing from the B of the bang. Set list was: The Prince 007 Gangsters Is This Love? Israelites Ghost Town Tears Of A Clown A Message To You Rudy On My Radio No No No Baggy Trousers Special Brew Night Boat To Cairo I've really enjoyed learning these songs; I was already familiar with them, as ska was the sound of my youth and I've always loved it, and it was great to finally play it. There are some wonderful basslines in there -- my personal highlights are Ghost Town and the utterly gorgeous Is This Love?. Next gig is in two weeks; a longer one this time, more songs to learn!1 point
