  1. Don't part with the '73. It's the better bass and is appreciating. The road worn will never be worth anything like that. Not always a factor but worth bearing in mind.

  3. Now SOLD - thanks for looking ☺ Hi Folks Continuing my recent gear clear-out, here for sale is my Hughes and Kettner Bassbase 600 bass amp, which comes with the all-important Footswitch and a 3U Stagg rack case to transport it around in. It's in excellent working condition having just been serviced . Now SOLD Apart from my Ampeg V4BH and Mesa Boogie Big Block 750, this amp has outperformed every other amp I've had over the last 12 years, including Eden, Markbass, TE, TechAmp amps and even the much praised Thunderfunk 550. It's also the most well made amp I've had too. If I wasn't moving house soon and didn't need the space, I'd probably keep this. I bought this here on Basschat from dougal back in 2010 I believe, and have used it consistently ever since, and it's done over 250 gigs in that time and never let me down. It's only ever given me great tone, a lot of power and plenty of headroom! The other great thing about this amp, is that it covers just about everything that you need, having two separate EQ channels, a tube pre-amp which really does add some grind to your tone if you want it, blendable FX channel, notch filter, bi-amp facility, DI and tuner out, separate headphone volume control and a mute switch - it really is quite brilliant! The tube in it is the original Hughes & Kettner supplied 12AX7. I've attached some photos to show all of the features, but if you need any more, please PM me... Links See here for more info: And here's a link for the manual: http://oldies.hughes-and-kettner.com/BassBase_600/BassBase600.pdf Footswitch When I bought the amp, it didn't have what they call the Bassbase stageboard for switching between EQ channels, activating FX loop etc, so I bought another almost identical Hughes & Kettner footswitch, and had it modified to work with this amp and it's great because it gives you even more versatility. This cost me about £45 to do in total, being £15 for the switch on Ebay and £30 to get it modified by my local tech. Technical info Power - 650 Watts @ 4 Ohms 1010 Watts @ 2 Ohms Poweramp - Dynaclip Preamp - TubeTouch Effects Loop - serial Switching Functions - EQ on/off, A, B Notch Filter - Yes Headphones - Yes Equalizer - 2-Band Varimetric A/B + Hi/Lo Bands Tubes - 1x 12AX7 Speaker Outputs - 4-8 Ohms Speakon, 1x XLR parallel Dimensions - 19" Weight - 18,5 kg/41 lbs Trades, shipping etc Just to clarify that I'm not looking for any trades on this thanks. Viewings welcome if you'd like to hear it first and I'm happy to ship it at your expense if you are nowhere near the uber-civilised south coast..😁 Any questions, please ask here or PM me.. Thanks for looking! Nik

  4. Hi to all For sale is now my longtime dream. (Or maybe trade for a Fodera). This is Ken Smith BT 6 from 1990. It have an Macassar ebony top and Macassar ebony fingerboard, the core is mahogany. This bass nails that John Patituccis first solo albums sound. It have also the original teardrop hardshell case. Both bass and case are very good condition for they age. And I'm interested about anykind of Foderas Standards etc... . This Smith is located in Finland and price includes shipping in Europe. Cheers - Mikko

  5. Well according to my db scale, an elephant having an orgasm is 100db and a 737 flying overhead at 100ft is 103db.

  6. There's no such thing as ohmage. Ohms are used to measure resistance, impedance, capacitive reactance and inductive reactance, so if one says' ohmage' it could refer to any or all of those factors. Adding a 4 ohm cab to an 8 ohm cab won't cause anything to blow, assuming the amp is rated for the resulting 2.67 ohm impedance load. Adding a second identical 8 ohm cab will result in a 3dB sensitivity increase compared to a single 4 ohm cab, assuming the drivers are identical save for their impedance. The pair of 8 ohm cabs would have twice the driver displacement of the 4 ohm cab, so they would have 6dB higher maximum output capacity.

  7. Sure sign of GAS - inventing a new category of playing context for which to require a new bass: live - check, recording - check, ah 'jam nights!' Need a JD.. and what about... 'Fretless jam nights!? You need to get that sorted pretty quick too. Don't forget the classic general purpose 'beater' but I guess your road-worn fulfills that category. 'FRETLESS BEATER!' (Sorry bass Tourettes)

  8. Nothing much happening at the moment. A piezo strip has been fitted under the brass bridge whilst the preamp (based on an LR Baggs version) is somewhere in the post. The idea is to have two separate jacks (like the original Zenith), one for magnetic and one for piezo (we could try and blend them but then we are getting expensive - and this project is going to be expensive enough as it is - so we arnt going to do that, and I can always use two cables and an A/B/Y pedal if that were needed). So in the meantime Simon has routed out the cavities for the magnetic pickups.

  9. Is it just me... a courier company has one job to do. Take your stuff and get it there safely. However, they have managed to con us into thinking it's perfectly ok for us to pay extra insurance for them to do their job properly. I work in IT. It would be like me saying, "it's just your luck if the software I write works. I recommend you take out insurance against me screwing up but the small print lets me off all the same if I do". I'm not going to be in business very long...

  10. This kind of thought can lead to some strange places. It's now common for children to bear the surnames of both their father and mother (a double-barrelled name...). If such a child, when grown up, then marries another with such a name, do their children bear four-barrelled names..? And if their children then grow up and marry... etc. I'd not pursue the issue too far, if I were you; that way, madness lies.

  11. When I saw the title of this thread I wondered if it was a new phenomenon. Courier Con, like ComicCon, or a convention trade show.. Couriers meet to swap, buy and sell dented van doors. Have competitions to see who can rev the most amount of black smoke out of their engines. Then see who has the noisiest door slam or who can shout the longest meaningless abuse at passing motorists in a single breath. Prizes for who can throw a parcel the farthest without looking and best excuse for not actually showing up at an address.

  16. Probably a deal/endorsement I'm guessing. Warwick are pretty savvy working with I/net musicians and educators to promote the brand to the blogging generation. Given Warwick's pricing, I bet the price of that bass is not too far of the Fodera.

  18. I reckon I'm a fair player but am always showing my technical ignorance on this board (especially in threads that Bill contributes to - he is the master). Don't worry about it.

  19. I don't think you are. Mixing an 8 and a 4 ohm cab is inadvisable, which leaves the option of 2 x 8 ohm cabs (assuming a 4ohm amp) or one 4 ohm cab. 2 8ohm cabs will be louder and sound better but are more hassle to haul. One 4 ohm cab is easier to haul but you won't be able to push it as much, mainly due to mechanical limitations. There is also the option of using one 8ohm cab depending on how loud you need to get. Using one 8ohm cab will get you approx 350w max from a 500w amp. In practice this is often more than sufficient! I'll always opt for one 4ohm (or 8ohm) cab because I'm a lazy bugger and in a relatively quiet band. I don't need to get loud. Getting loud is overrated anyway, imho. Currently I'm using a 350w 2x10 combo which sounds great, gets quite loud enough and weighs 16kg for the win.

  22. Jackson did signature models of their Rhoads, which was a signature model for Randy Rhoads originally. There's a Christian Andreu Rhoads, the Oli Herbert Rhoads, and there were once the Kevin Bond Rhoads and Matt Tuck Rhoads. Basswise, Lakland once made an Adam Clayton edition of their Darryl Jones model in natural ash with a maple fingerboard with black blocks and bindings.

  24. No I just made that from what I wanted. It is a watered down version of what I have on the G&L which has a different 'tapp outside or inside coils' tap (which makes next to no difference). The bit not shown on that that is shown on the wiring is the bit past the volume which is the switch for active / passive on the volume which just routes the input and output away from the preamp, and the preamp. It had a slight complication as it goes to an active circuit and originally the volume is part of the active circuit (and a different value) but I couldn't keep that and have the volume work in passive mode as well, so I took the volume out of that circuit and put a passive volume before the preamp, which is how the G&Ls L series work, and if it worked for me fender it is fine by me. The G&L L series is actually an entirely passive bass (controls wise) that at the end where the jack socket would be it goes to a preamp entirely for buffering.

  27. This sounds so familiar. Been there done it ! Don’t let your ears and inner thoughts deceive you into hearing your ideal tone in a bass you’ve never actually played. I’m tired of chasing tone. If you can’t get the sound your looking from the really high end basses you own. Then I think your going to struggle with what ever bass you gas for next. By all means get your JD but not at the expense of getting rid of a bass you love.

  29. I have a Jaydee Roadie fretless. Its ok but not great. I find it nice to play but tonally very limited. Its an odd thing that no matter what tonal variation i use with it it still has a distinct tone. Maybe that's the sign of a great bass and i'm just not getting it. Dave

  35. This topic has been a massive pain for me over the last year. I moved back to the UK from Ukraine and had to take 4 basses with me. I took a few risks and was lucky but came to realise just how annoying this is if you have to travel regularly. The first two basses I put in a Mono M80. One was a neck through, one bolt on. I actually put the body of the bolt-on in my suitcase and the neck in the Mono, wrapped in clothes to keep it from hitting the other bass. I gate checked the Mono so it wasn’t under anything and everything was fine when I collected it at gatwick. I planned to gate check another bass but when I got to the gate it was too late and I had to carry it on with me and put it in a spare seat. Luckily I wasn’t made to pay for this. Finally with my last bolt on bass I put the body in the suitcase again and just had the neck in my carry on rucksack. It was sticking out but no one at the airport raised a fuss. Even though I consider myself lucky not to have had any damage to the basses, each time the process was stressful as you just can’t predict how staff at the airports are going to behave when they see a guitar case.

  36. +1 - I've had a Dimension Reverb, Guitar OFD and an Orbital Modulator. All so clever and tweakable (I can't be bothered with the app stuff so the new One Series pedals don't appeal too much.

  39. For me the joy of live performance is playing brilliant crafted songs as a band and entertaining the audience, and I'm not going to let a some discrepancy in my sound ruin that. With programmable effects my sound for any given song is exactly the same every time and if it isn't that means that there is something very wrong acoustically with the venue, which is beyond my ability to correct and therefore it is pointless to worry about it.

  42. Shuker Bass. One the UK's little gems. How he manages to charge the prices he does for instruments that easily stack up against the very, very best costing much more never ceases to amaze me. I also know that many UK luthiers say the same! I've been playing Shukers for over ten years now and like you Josie, when you find your brand, it's a beautiful thing!
