  3. The basic carve of the body is almost done. Just got to take a bit of thickness off the back of the lower bout and then I'll move to the neck. I'll finish sand it all at the same time. From the view above, it looks pretty conventional. But this gives a hint that it's not quite... :

  4. Punter came up and handed me a slip of paper once, with a request on it. At the end of the song, I announced "We've had a request from one of you lovely people, it's for a song called...", I unfolded the paper and read, "...'youre crap, pack up and fk off'..." Nah, not really. But it's only a matter of time till it does happen.

  7. Manufactured in 1980 I've has this bass since 2001 and it was my main gigging bass until 2008 but I only use it at home now so it needs someone to look after it and use it regularly. It has loads of tonal options and an active/passive switch . It is strung with groundwound/halfround strings and there is a little wear of the fingerboard but given the age of the bass it is in good shape. There is one major ding on the body under the jack which was like that when I got it. This is not a light bass however and one of the reasons for sale is it is pretty heavy at just over 11lbs. I don't have a case for it so it would be best collected from North Somerset. Ian

  8. EBS_freak, great questions. We're at the Summer NAMM show this week, so please give us a bit of time to respond.

  10. I'd suggest you are not driving the existing 4x10 sufficiently. Buying a better cab will not change anything if you are still using an inadequate head (I would imagine a Behringer amp taken from a combo will not have much power). Upgrade the amp and continue to borrow the Hartke for now would be my advice.

  11. We'll do pretty much any request as long as it's from the 20th century. Any requests for Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, etc. receive a good telling off

  12. We do abba, so that is why that doesn't cause a problem for us. One of the heavy songs, I use the full distortion for that one. We get that quite a bit. People get a bit annoyed with me - "Do you do any oasis", "Who?", "Oasis!", "Sorry mate, never heard of them", "Dont be stupid, you know - lateleeeey.. gonna be the one that saves meeeeee...", "Nah sorry, doesn't ring a bell". I really really detest oasis! On the other hand, one guy at the last gig was really insistant we should do Hazel O'Conner 'will you'. Doesn't strike me as a good song for a party / dancy band like us.

  14. Hi All, We've caught wind of this discussion and wanted to chime in a bit more "officially". First off, we're thrilled about the enthusiasm and the discussion here regarding our latest model, the N8. Keep it coming and we'll do our best to chime in as-needed. The response above is accurate. We wanted to provide a bit more context: Often times the recommended minimum impedance is stated for damping factor reasons, frequency response reasons, or as a precaution. Whatever the case may be for why Shure stated 9 ohms in its specs, the results of the tests we conducted show otherwise. We have tested the N8 with both the Shure P9RA and the Sennheiser G3 EK 300. Both body packs drive the iem well with no problems. The output impedance of both packs is on the lower side so they are able to provide MORE than enough juice should you choose. Neither of the packs presented any "cutting-out" or went into any over-current protection modes, etc... We were impressed, so we decided to try an artificial 4 ohm load as well. The results were the same. Both packs remained stable and were able to drive the 4 ohm load with no problem. The THD stayed low at an impressive 0.01% on the Sennheiser and 0.04% on the Shure. The voltage across the load was 1.9 on the Sennheiser and 1.55 on the Shure. Driving the N8 "as is" with either of those two body packs should not be a problem based on our tests. Also, we beta tested the N8s over the last few months with a number of people (including Nathan East himself) and there were no reports of any issues related to driving the iem with any of their amps, phones, body packs, and other devices. We're all ears so please keep the feedback and questions coming!

  15. Seen this a few times in the last couple of days. Fortunately, if you look closely, in the text of the fob-off the word "listing" is actually a link back to the original item. Still a frustrating pain in the ar$e though. I'm guessing there's a rationale behind this, not including an obvious link & making the actual link inconspicuous, but it's anyone's guess what it is. Just another step in the ongoing process of making Ebay hostile, awkward, unintuitive and irritating.

  16. We regularly announce songs as requests , it engages the punters quite well cos although we might not have time to do all the requests , at least they know we are trying , we get away with as long as they don't see the set list 😉

  21. I remember WaterOfTyne once mentioning that there was a local tribute act named Joanne Joanne (it really needs a Geordie accent) and I've always kept an eye out for tribute bands with names that crack me up. I've just seen that a local club (Tropic Of Ruislip) has next month the band SNOG - a tribute to Kiss.

  30. Add the Ashdown ABM 400 in the classifieds at the minute (bit over budget but that's what we're here for!) and that'd be a stonking rig! Lightweight gear is all the rage at the minute (and has been for a few years) so you'll find that heavier gear is pretty cheap...

  31. My Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute did "a night of CCR tunes" (obviously) at a pub in Wantage. One drunken punter kept coming up and asking if we knew any Oasis! Bizarrely we'd wind up launching straight into Green River or Have You Ever Seen the Rain, only for him to be completely happy once the music started up again.

  33. What leds are those? not sure what a neopixel is, but a normal red led is 20mA at 1.8V at full brightness, which is pretty bright. But I must admit more what I am after is a fine red (or whatever colour, definitely not blue) dot on the side marker, that wouldn't be just visible under normal lighting conditions. So I am thinking with fibre optics, 10 dots powered by one LED. Or at the very most like the lights on Jimrs2k2 status

  37. In an old band a guy celebrating his birthday asked if we could do Enter Sandman and he could sing it. It was an end of year student union party so we said yes. 2 of the band didn’t know it so we went through it in our 30 mins break. We got up to do it and the guy started to sing. turned out he only new the chorus and sang that over all of it. It was woeful.

  38. New toy - these don't seem to be readily available but managed to track one down on a bit of a whim. I 've got some gigs coming up with a band that run a fair bit of a wireless and don't want to be that annoyance that turns up with a load of wireless to complicate matters! Also, they are a bit less clunky than the studiospares headphone amps Ive got... and a bit less risky than taking a P9RHW. So here it is - Behringer PM2. I have to say, having used the Fischer sticks with a band that I also play for, the Behringer *ahem* version of it is equally well built... and dare I say it, I think I prefer the uncluttered look of the Behringer version. It's certainly less busy on the white lettering front than the Fischer. I paid just under £40 for the PM2. The Fischer comes in at just over £120. That's some saving there. So for those that don't know what they are looking at, it's a belt mounted headphone amp - better than trying to drive your headphones directly from an aux.... Plus it has the some basic mono/stereo switching (essentially if you don't want your mono mix just coming out of one ear on your headphones!) So, stereo or mono operation (there's a little switch inside that changes between the two modes) - combo jack on the bottom... so TRS/XLR for UNbalanced stereo, or TRS/XLR for balanced mono... and I'm guessing - not that I've checked... a TS will give you unbalanced mono also... (with switch in mono). So, in my gig bag of goodies, I've got a long XLR, a long TS cable, balanced dual XLR split to single unbalanced XLR, Dual TRS to single XLR and a TRS to XLR adapter... (a bit like this - https://www.kenable.co.uk/en/xlr-plugs-connectors/6096-kenable-xlr-male-plug-3-pins-to-635mm-trs-balanced-jack-plug-audio-adapter-006096-5055383460960.html - useful into plugging into the QSC desks that have stereo TRS auxes especially for inears) - that should cover me for most wired situations, I should think! Good stuff. With gadgets like this and the ZS10 appearing for the price that they are, why wouldn't you be embracing IEMs?! So assuming that you have an aux available on your desk, for under £75 (and maybe add another £15 for cables for your specific mixer - so say for under £100 all in)... there's no excuse to not be ragging your ears anymore. And the upside is that you can hear absolutely everything that is going on. Win, win.

  39. I wish I was more aware of my house sound. I'll sacrifice low end for sustain for some songs. I'm after what Tom Petersson does for Cheap Trick making the band sound bigger with bass octave , overdrive and even a little modulation from my TC Electronics Hall Of Fame Reverb. For those interested you check out some of Pertersson's rig run downs on YouTube. Hard to believe for so many years I was a Precision straight to amp stand back by the drummer finger player. Blue

  42. I should also mention that the body size is a fair bit smaller than my 3/4 ply bass (an Anton Zeller). It's certainly not a 1/2 size, and it's more than a 3/8 size if such a thing exists, I think it just is what it is. That reduction in size neatly offsets the greater weight of the aluminium as opposed to ply. Overall, this bass is heavier than my Zeller but not by enough for it to be an issue. For the benefit of those who have met me and have some idea of my size and build:

  45. An ex-colleague from the '3 Elephants' festival days was organising a private party (we've already played at mini-festivals he'd put on...), and invited us to play as support for a rock'nroll trio. A couple of rehearsals (we've not played since 2016, as I've been ill, and other stuff...) so a bit rusty, but still... As if conditions weren't precarious enough, our 2nd guitar has taken a contract for four years in the Caribbean, so this was to be his last date with us..! We arrived an hour early, giving plenty of time for setting up in a well-adapted agricultural outbuilding, the size of a small cathedral but open on one side. A decent PA and efficient, friendly sound crew, simple but effective LED lights and spots, so conditions were quite comfortable. One slight but significant bugbear: the tom mics had a longer than usual overhang, and protruded over the batter heads, making it quite delicate when executing stuff like 'Toxicity', for fear of hitting 'em. A bit more than an hour in all, to a mixed audience; we managed to warm 'em up enough for the main attraction, though, so 'mission accomplished'. Got home at about 02h30; we'll unload the truck in a while this afternoon and discuss how we're to continue. We've a new 2nd guitar to talk to, but I'm not in any real state to take on a world tour, so we'll be taking things easy for now. It was great, despite everything, to get out and play again after this enforced hiatus, and well worth the sore arms and calves..! Next outing..? Hmm... Maybe towards end of year; we've a date pencilled-in, but we'll see... I may get some pics later, if Juliette remembers to send 'em. Edit: Photos added ... The 'tour bus' for the occassion (Merci, Monique, for the loan...)... No, I'm not asleep; I'm setting up a drum stand, honest... Our departing 2nd guitar, sound check ... ... and again, chatting with our singster ... Yes, that's my 'relax' session before we kick off ... Our Eldest ... ... and the singster, errrm... singing ... ... and a couple of (very..!) short clips from a 'phone (thanks, Juliette...)...

  46. Hi all, done a few transcriptions over the last couple of years so thought I'd start sharing them with you all here, before I get my own website up and running. I'll be doing some playalongs of some of these tracks in the not too distant future also. Hope they are of some use to you. Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic are also done, just proof-reading and layout to do, so expect them soon! Cheers https://drive.google.com/open?id=17WeLSNw4fCnT6vLav75e0Nr0f0iXx6IB

  47. I took the new bass to rehearsal last night to see how it sounded through my gig rig. It sounds amazing at home; I spent a long time thumping around with the tone rolled off when I should’ve been working, but at gig volume with the tone up and the band in full flow it didn’t really cut it. I know it’s not really a ‘rock’ bass but despite a bit of eq’ing I couldn’t really get it to poke through the mix like my Jazz does. I’d really like to gig it (despite it’s not inconsiderable weight - 9.5lb) so I’m thinking of maybe putting something like a Quarter Pounder in. I’m not sure if this would help. I’ve got to get the terrible wiring sorted too... Here she is with her big brother - aah.

  48. The decal arrived today, so I applied that this afternoon. Rothko & Frost have again supplied a high quality product at a fair price and with good service. I know others have had less successful experiences with them but I have no complaints, perhaps I’ve been lucky or they’ve been unlucky? Anyway, it looks great. I chose silver for the main part of the logo as I knew I’d be putting a mist coat of amber tint on it which would golden it up a bit. I signed and numbered the back of the headstock again too, as with the Bruno bass I recently completed. My little daughter Dulcie for whom the bass is named didn’t sign it, like her big brother did on his namesake instrument; she can’t hold a pen yet! I don’t think I’m going to bother clear coating or polishing, the nitro has buried the decal and hidden the edges well and looks nice and vintage, so I think I’ll just leave it as it is and see how it wears / ages naturally. In retrospect it’s just slightly darker than I’d have preferred; next time I’ll do fewer coats of tint before adding the decal, or use clear nitro for the final coats. I’ll let it rest overnight, give it a very light sanding tomorrow, reassemble the bass and hopefully give it a go at band rehearsals tomorrow.

  49. Discovered a great big hole, and the exposed edge of the photo flame paper. I made a video about that too... ...and today I lacquered the neck with amber tint nitrocellulose, sprayed the scratchplate white, and ordered the headstock decal.
