Tonight I depped for a functions-ish band in St. Albans. I have now played Le Freak and Blame It On The Boogie, Dancing Queen and Waterloo, even Uptown Funk, and I was gutted when we ran out of time before I could play Disco Inferno. Never played ANY of those songs before in front of an audience. Years of pop/rock and blues/rock and Dadrock but never disco. Don't know where you all rate that lot for coolness or otherwise, but some bloody good fun to be had! Just thought you'd like to know. 😁5 points

I don’t see what the problem is. The girl can obviously play and she is undoubtedly cute! She is certainly using her looks (in a pretty restrained way) to get attention for her bass playing. The same (on a much higher level) with Nita Strauss. There is no way she would be in Alice Cooper’s band if she didn’t look the way she does, but equally she would never have got the gig if she couldn’t hold her own playing wise! But so what… Ever since the beginning of rock and roll in the 50s, virtually every iconic male act has traded on their image, looks and sex appeal – be it Elvis, the Beatles, Guns N’Roses or hundreds of others. Why should a talented woman be castigated for taking advantage of their looks / image, when it is accepted that it is simply part of the package male artists usually need to be successful??4 points

I have the feeling if she were your regular average dude playing his bass on youtube, nobody here would be claiming he's miming and that his bass was not even plugged in... Are we jealous that we're not as pretty as her, or as good players as she seems to be? The beauty, we probably can't do much about... the other stuff, well, if you look around you probably find a wooden thing with a long stick with strings. Yes... that's a bass,, remember? Maybe spend some more regular quality time with it, and you will also get better.3 points

Get some step drill bits and a 22mm Forsner bit. The step drill bit drills like a countersink and located inside the hole. Then you can drill until you get a 22mm step, then use the forsner bit to do the rest. The steps means the forsner bit won’t wonder. Step drill bits are very handy to have around.2 points

Stubbornness and stupidity is closer the mark 🤣 The neck has settled down,if 1.5mm on E & G isn't low enough then what do folks consider low ? Intonation is getting there, on the wee Korg tuner it's showing slightly sharp across the board but I've plenty of play on the machine screws. Must have bent a contact on the jack socket as the cable feels loose. Minor issues 🙂 Spoke to soon about further work. Sent Steve at Axe Decals a message this morning. Think I'll paisely print the back to match 😎 https://axedecals.com/2 points

Last stage. Still more heartache on the horizon 😱 Lacquer got peeled off with a razor blade, back and sides rubbed smoooth, satin black applied. No drama 🙂 Putting the bass back together wasn't straight forward. I was fitting a 2 saddle/through body bridge, from that you want the strings and pickup to line up near as possible. The Bloodstone P-Bass 50's chosen for this job didn't fit the hole, nor did the Roswell ?? I had a smaller single coil bought on ebay so used that. Bridge drilled and fitted, string bushings drilled/fitted. String it up for first time. All OK except the neck is arching back on itself 😱Slacken off the TR helps but even with the saddles jacked right up the strings are hitting the fretboard. Never had this bother fitting the other 2 saddle so start investigating. Turns out the new PB-50s have a different bridge, that bridge has a thicker base plate so the neck pocket was shallower. Got the router out and trimmed down the neck pocket Still couldn't fathom why the pickup didn't fit. I'd 2 Roswell pickups and lifted the wrong one,the one for this PB-50 had been trimmed down by 1mm. I had the router out anyway so cut a bigger hole 👍 You'll be glad to know I now have a playing bass 😉 I may add a skin to the back at a later date.2 points

Umm.. lets think. Oh, I know, the woman that the thread was about! Fancy that, that was easy. I know she had the audacity to be a woman, and not covered from head to toe in a hessian sheet (damn hussy) and more talented than probably the majority of people on the forum. Must be just because she is a girl though. Other women.. how about Nita Strauss on the guitar? No? Tal Wilkenfeld? No? I know there are a lot of women on youtube that get interest because they are women, and I know the comments on youtube are awful, they are on all videos, its a type of madness to read the comments on a youtube video, but that is hardly the fault of the person on the video. It is the scum that mainly women have to put up with on youtube videos.2 points

Here we have a oiled and waxed paulownia bodied p bass I built out of parts. Hipshot kick donkey donkey, Maida Vale handbuilt pickups, CTS pots , cloth wiring, maple neck. I built it specifically to be easy on the shoulders, it weighs about 6lbs. Plays really well, sounds great (Maida Vale pickups are very good across the range). Everyone who has played it can't get over the weight vs tone. Only looking to recoup costs...so grab a bargain.1 point

Unfortunately this beautiful P bass has to go. Its in awesome condition. Its super easy to play and sounds huge. Comes with Bridge cover (as in pics) but personally I prefer to play without it, as well as PUP cover (not fitted.) The bass comes with an original FENDER vintage hardcase. Currently strung with Thomastic Flats. The bass is perfect for a huge range of styles but obviously MOTOWN, ROCK, POP and even Funk. Got loads of MOJO and style too.1 point

You're never too old! I'm currently living in the US, but may head over for an open day or two. My son is an ACM Guildford graduate, and that's up for consideration, too. I'm not particularly interested in any of the music business courses, just the performance. Perhaps I'll have a few years of function band life left in these old bones!1 point

Thanks, Neil and all you others. I was doing so well until the end of the England match when, in the excitement, I went down and cut a few bits of wood: "Oh no - he's not going to try an make his own knobs again, is he???"1 point

Same here, I slowed the video down on the 'were not so different anyway' fill, it too me ages to get that bit. So if she is miming, she is miming well enough for me to learn how to play it by her finger positions!1 point

Best way to play. Work on you technique and you’ll be fine. TONE! That is what the double bass was invented for. Talk to the old guys, they did big band stuff with no amplifier. My amp has not come out of the cupboard for over a year. I needed it when playing with full drums, but not now. I play in duo-trio at clubs, festivals and small theatres with no amp, but that’s easy at low stage volumes. For fun, I also play sessions in “acoustic” settings in village halls and clubs around 100 capacity. There is always a PA, the singer has a mic, the guitars and keys have acoustic amps (at low volume) and there usually is a drummer with snares and brushes. I often go totally acoustic and only when there are lots of people on stage, brass etc, I DI for front of house (no monitoring). I am always heard and after 3 hours I’m still standing (though I probably wouldn’t pass the armpit test). my action is fairly normal, between .9 and 1.1cm Strings: Spirocore medium.1 point

The new batch of PB-50s have had a change of factory and they do things differently. The annoying hole for the pickup wire was present and needed filled. For some stupid reason I stripped the body of it's lacquer. Not only did the lacquer come away but the photo flame peeled off and left an uneven surface. This is a layer of lacquer and one of the photo flame paper looked at from the back and side. . Covered the whole thing in filler then sanded flat. Next up. The Print Debacle !!1 point

Yes very!! I completely sanded the pickguard back to original and resprayed it and it looks OK now Still need to sand the headstock back to maple as I don't think it would look right colour matched I'm going to l leave them both till Sunday and start getting it all back together ready for the nut and bridge when they turn up 😀1 point

buy the best you can afford. My budget was $700AU so I got the Scarlett and for my level of recording expertise and microphone quality, Scarlett is a great fit for me. I record live with direct monitoring so latency is not a concern in making my decision. If you need amp sim vsts etc you may need better latency performance. Buy the best you can afford1 point

Unfortunately that's bollocks. The reason you tune down and then back up is because the windings on the string catch at various points along their travel - at the nut, over the bridge saddles, as they pass under string retainers... Tuning down lets the windings drop past any "obstructions" and then you tune back up to pitch. It's got nothing to to do with how good the machine head mechanism is. Hipshot machine heads might be better made than the competition, but they still won't help when your string is caught on the nut or string retainer.1 point

For many years when I heard people talking about Donald Fagan I genuinely thought they were referring to this guy. I just assumed that he had a vast back catalogue of stuff that I'd never heard. it's only quite recently that I realised my error.1 point

I've just finished listening to it - nice work, @SpondonBassed and @Akio Dāku :-) No negative comments about the production, writing, vocal style, etc.; it all sounded good. I thought the length was fine, but I'm used to listening to "long-format" podcasts (it was at least shorter than The Intellivisionaries). The interview with @Chownybass was really interesting - thanks for going into lots of (messy!) detail for us about how the business works. It makes me wonder whether someone at Harmony in India would be willing to be interviewed about their end of the process... Are you planning on doing a "show notes" page (which I guess would just be the first post in the comments thread)? It'd be nice to have links to the companies/threads you've talked about, the pedal settings you were demonstrating, and so on.1 point

Did you get one? I’m late to the thread but in case anyone finds it later I want to give the Marcus Miller Jazz a bit of love. My first fretless was an Epiphone copy in the late 1970’s that I pulled the frets from. So recently I wanted to buy a Fretless and money was not an object, but I was curious about the very inexpensive basses available, I bought and returned the following basses in my search for my ideal Fretless 1. Thomann Harley Benton Jazz copy, Just about £130 or so. Looked beautiful and sounded good, but there was a pretty dead G string so it went back. It was tough to send back it looked so damn pretty. 2. Squier VM Fretless, again in sunburst. I think in the £300 range. Again, beautiful to look at, but I just hated the ‘plastic’ fingerboard, couldn’t stand the sound of the strings slapping against it. Sent it back. 3. Fender American Professional in Black, Fretless. I think about £1500. I decided that money should not be an object. As an owner of a Fender American fretted Jazz this seemed the safe option. But despite its beauty this bass failed to impress. It had a lined neck and I could clearly ‘hear the lines’ when I used glissando, overall I felt a lack of character and the desired mwah, but that was something to do with my playing. Sent it back as it was a lot of money if I was not in love with it. 4. Finally bought the Sire with a Rosewood neck in sunburst. A nice looking bass but didn’t visually float my boat like the cheapest HB in terms of appearance. But... hit the spot in terms of a) build quality as good as the American Pro, b) with the active off a good sounding passive bass but with the active there’s access to a variety of tones, a good active circuit c) most importantly the fretboard is coated in epoxy and is glass smooth, so there is no residual sound from the fretlines, this is of course how Jaco finished his own bass of doom, glass smooth. I can get a variety of sounds out of this and more recently finally nailed that ‘mwah’ technique with LaBella black tapewound strings giving me completely noise free glissando. So now I can play those Percy Jones licks and special effects, completely clean harmonic glissandos. I have to try hard not to buy more of them as I really don’t need them, but I’d love one in natural with a rosewood neck, easily achieveable by buying two and swapping them. My only problem is I can’t get the intonation of the G string adjusted quite right, its sharp above the 12th fret no matter how I fiddle with the saddle, needs a professional setup I think. But the beauty is that I can adjust my playing to sharpen the notes when I play up there.1 point

I had a young, rather drunk lady shout in my ear whilst playing with my blues band, asking if we knew any songs by One Direction. I shouted back "Ask the singer". Her reply, "which one's the singer?". When I told the rest of the band at the break, the singer told us the said girl had then shouted in his ear (whilst he was singing) "are you the singer?" - not knowing the context, he had been quite confused.1 point

I've told this story before on another thread: a year ago I went to visit my son in Nashville having just seen a Gibson EB-2 gigged at a local music festival and decided that I *needed* one (as you do 🙂 ). His many virtues do not include discouraging my GAS - guitar store crawls are an essential and dangerous part of all my visits there. I had been to his excellent local place and found an EB-2 which I tried and was just dead wood, so I thought I was safe. We walked into Gruhn's, my eyes swiveled left to where I knew the basses were, and there was another - only this time as soon as I picked her up she just came to life and sang. I couldn't really afford her, dragged my feet, decided to sleep on it. Dreamed about her, literally. We went back the next day, me well anxious would she still be there? Had I remembered her right? and there she was with a big card saying "Rob" tucked into the strings. I actually started shaking and sweating with heart pounding thinking no, please... and asked the nearest member of staff who said "Oh, that means Rob has found a buyer." Even worse... until he pointed out Rob, who had helped me try her out the day before, and immediately grinned and said "I knew you'd be back." She's still in Nashville, my son and his musician friends love her too, and I have three grand-sprogs there as an excuse to go back and play her 🙂1 point

One Two Three Yes, it's a word according to some dictionaries. It is mildly amusing to find that neither Oxford, Cambridge nor Collins online dictionaries seem to carry a definition of the word whilst happily promoting the use of amazeballs with impunity. Good grief. If you do get as far as the third link, there are a couple of interesting variations of the root word - slump1 point

Isn't the bass in the OP "double stained" that is the first application of stain is allowed to penetrate deep into the wood and then the top is partially sanded back to remove the stain from the less porous areas. Then the whole body is retained again which gives a higher contrast effect on the grain. If so depending on what sort of finish the OP is intending to apply it might involve either a lot of sanding to remove the first deep stain or very careful sanding to only take off the second stain.1 point
