  1. good evening chaps, update went to rehearsal tonight, did not take any gear and was the last to arrive, normally I am first as I like to have a noodle just to get myself up and running, so when I walked in they all just looked oh dear, anyway,I said I need a few minutes from everyone and they all stopped, after explaining myself for a few minutes saying exactly how I feel and all the other things I said on here, everyone to be fair listened to all my points and agreed things were wrong, and that it would change, the guitarist got a bit arsey until he realised that the guys agreed with me,at which point he backed down and said he was sorry and had everyones best interests at heart, then said we need to speak more as a band regards all aspects of the music, how would I want to go forward,to which I said they need to have a conversation with me not there to discuss all my points, at that point I left and came home, picked up the fretless and played some john martyn nice thankyou all again for the advice it did help

  2. Typical, the bass player does all the work and the keyboard player just sits round noodling away...

  3. I remember playing the Marquee many years ago. 3-400 had come to see us - it was Christmas and the crowd were quite lively. We did a few songs, then our singer announced that we'd hired a stripper, who was going to perform while we played pne of our crazier numbers, "Curtains". The crowd whooped and hollered in excitement, the band launched into the song, and out came the stripper. Funnily enough, the rest of the band hadn't known about the extra performer, and were just as surprised as the audience when a very overweight Santa staggered out. None of us knew where to look as he disrobed rapidly and cavorted very nakedly... The singer realised quite how far his joke had backfired when his girlfriend started flirting outrageously with Fat Santa.

  5. I've just taken delivery of a new bass guitar. It's an Italia Maranello Cavo hollow body model expertly set up by Richard's Guitars in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is short scale and weighs in at a tad over 7lb - which gives my old back some respite. Despite its name it has not been anywhere near Italy (unless its journey from South Korea took a detour). The Cavo is beautifully put together and Richard's have done a fine job of setting the action and adjusting what needed adjusting. It is strung with round wounds but I much prefer flat wounds so I think I'll swap them once I've had a good play with it. There is certainly a retro look about the bass - in a 1950s Wurlitzer jukebox sort of way - and, although I am not a fan of chrome, the guitar carries it off well. You don't see many of these around and Richard's Guitars were the only people who had one in stock when I checked the t'internet. Santa has arrived early!

  10. But this is the thing. If HX Stomp was really at risk of cannibalising sales of the HX Effects then Line 6 quite simply would not have released it. The people for whom HX Effects is ideal (i.e. folk who need more than 6 blocks, want at least one footswitch per block, don’t need amp models, have comprehensive MIDI switching needs, have amp switching needs, don’t need another audio interface and don’t need a headphone practice amp) are looking at HX Stomp with no GAS whatsoever. People who willfully bought HX Effects but wanted the features of Stomp can cry “shafting” all day long. But if Stomp had been released first there would undoubtedly have been a ton of annoyed guitarists saying they had no need for the amp sims (because they want to keep their existing head & cab) , wanted more effects blocks, more physical footswitches, amp switching capability and scribble strips. Line 6, and the music gear industry in general, will always prioritise the needs of guitarists over bassists. They outnumber us several times over. Arguably, when bassists look at the current HX options, the majority would gravitate to HX Stomp over HX Effects but Line 6 are more than aware that the vast bulk of their sales are from guitarists, so it made absolute business sense to prioritise the release of HX Effects before HX Stomp. And yet, with all this said, looking at the bigger picture, both HX Stomp and HX Effects are primarily aimed at guitarists. Line 6 simply know that the portion of the guitarist market who have any interest in amp modelling whatsoever is relatively minute. Compare that to the huge portion of the guitarist market who have a serious interest in effects and pedalboards and it’s a no brainer. Anyone with any common sense would develop and release Effects before Stomp.

  11. Bass in very good conditions. One of the most beautiful sounds of '70 era, rich and warm, but it is also able to be very scratchy and rude;) specs: - Mahogany body and neck (but reinforced with carbon). - Ebony fretboard. - 34 "stairs. - Neck pickup: individually output-adjustable coils for each string! - Rubber damper - bridge vol + tone, neck vol + tone - Pickup selector switch - mono output - stereo output https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wovLoyU4tlg

  12. Hi all Up for sale – an Alain Caron 5 String Fretless – the ‘king’ of fretless basses. I bought this originally from a basschatter. It is a beautiful bass, in mint condition, extremely well made and lovely to play. It has not really left my studio since I bought it, and then only for recording sessions. It comes with a well made 'structured' fbass soft case. The action is quite fast, and the neck is very smooth – I find I can really get about the neck quickly which quite surprised me given the range. The tone is great, particularly when you play with the pick ups and piezo – you can get a real ‘woody’ sound. The B string also has a lovely depth to it, and I find I can dig in and groove with a funky mwaaaah. I am selling because it's been a tough year, and of my vital organs (bass collection), this gets the least use. I reserve the right to change my mind and keep it if a random shower of money comes out of the sky! I will miss it. Having researched a bit and asked around, This bass would have cost 6000 euro new, I am looking for £3000 (GBP) - will consider trades with min £2k cash my way. I will also provide the document the FBass team sent me (upon my request) with a mapping of the controls, which I found essential to understand the different tone mixes & piezo. I would be happy to answer any questions, make a sound file or take specific photos if requested. A few photos included below. Thanks Dan

  14. Gibson Brands - New Board The Nashville Post has revealed the identities of the Board of Directors of Gibson Brands, the company which owns Gibson Guitars. The revitalised board will - one supposes - offer direction and support to the previously announced Guitars Division management team. But who are Gibson's new Corporate Overlords? Joining the previously mentioned Chairman Nat Zilkha (of Gibson's majority shareholder, hedge fund KKR) are: Nathan Hubbard: Former CEO of Ticketmaster and latterly head of Twitter's 'commerce division' (sic) JC Curleigh: Gibson Guitars CEO, late of Levis Jeans Nancy Ford: Works for KKR, also a director of - er - Nature's Bounty, and Cardenas Lemonade Matthew Ross: Another KKR drone Brian Kushner: FTI consulting ( a DC-based 'global business advisory firm' with 4,700 employees and t/o of $1.7bn) Morgan Neff: Senior Portfolio Manager for Wilks Brothers It's the last name as is the most interesting: Morgan Neff works for brothers Farris and Dan Wilks, a pair of billionaire Texan businessmen with connections to GOP Senator Ted Cruz. The Wilks brothers made their stash out of fracking. Having sold their business in 2011 for $3.5bn dollars les freres Wilks embarked on a land buying spree, securing ownership of hundreds of thousands of unspoiled acres in Montana, Idaho, Kansas and Colarado. Readers might speculate as to why Texan frackers might be buying undeveloped land in mostly rural Western States. Not satisfied with bending Mother Nature to his will, it is reported that brother Farris Wilks is closely involved with the Lord Almighty. Farris's foundation allegedly donates to Religious Right groups and to the Koch brothers’ political network. It is also said that Farris Wilks funds a network of “pregnancy centers” that refuse, on principle, to talk to single women about contraception. (Married women need to check with their husband and pastor). The American Prospect website alleges that Farris "saw Barack Obama’s re-election as a harbinger of the End Times and he believes God will punish America for embracing homosexuality". So that's the Gibson Brands board, then: a collection of vacuous hedge-fund stooges, a ticket-scalper, a 'business consultant' and the bagman for some God fearin' Texan oil folk. What could possibly go wrong?

There's also great bassists from other genres like Bruno Mars' bassist, Jamareo Artis, Thundercat, etc. Lots of great new bass players out there.

  17. Welcome to Basschat! Hope you're enjoying it thus far. I saw you were a Clash fan, if you like punk 6 Music radio have been promoting the IDLES a lot over the last week. For some reason they reminded me a lot of a modern day Clash (though upon re-listening to the Clash I'm not sure why). I'm not a massive punk fan in general but there was something about them I really liked.

  22. It is a satin black finish on an Ash solid-body. The grain shows through the finish and looks lovely. It is a 34" scale, 45mm at the top nut, adjustable string spacing - currently at 19mm - and weighs 3.4kgs. It has two humbucker Pick-ups and a Piezo under the bridge. The Esh-Tronic controls are: master volume, Master Tone, Bridge pick-up/Parallel/Bridge and 80% Neck PU/Pick-ups in series. Control nearest the bridge is: Studio (pick-ups direct bypassing the pre-amp/Passive/Passive and Piezo/Active and Piezo. The combination of two humbuckers and a Piezo allows you so much variation and the option to bypass the preamp and go direct is a super idea. This is a German made bass and quite unusual to find this pick-up spec, Piezo and pre-amp configurations.

  23. Win ISD will cope with two ports but assumes they are both the same length and size. I wouldn't want to have to do the calculations for two ports so completely different. Conventionally you'd treat two ports (or any number of ports) as if they were a single port with the same area as all of them combined. with a 55mm and 75mm port that equates to a 93mm port. Remember the volume of the cabinet is decreased by the ports and the volume of the speaker itself so this is probably a 30l cab in reality. The 75mm port is nearly twice the area of the 55mm port 44cm2 plays 24cm2 so you should have a noticeable improvement with just that change.

  29. Fortress Masterman V (1997) Those of you that were fazed by the Streamer Pro M controls should look away now! Also, the finish... when I purchased it, the finish was the normal oil stain, which had some scratches and scuffs. I thought they'd polish out... Instead, after much elbow grease, I ended up with what looks like the high gloss finish!

  32. I am about done with the entire discussion. To each their own, after the initial "ooh Stomp is shiny and small" I realised it has ZERO use to me over HX and to quote @CameronJ I am looking at the Stomp with no GAS at all. I would go full fat or LT before Stomp, simple as. Last thing I will say on the subject, it is getting boring.

  34. I used to do a lot of high end function work and the general rule seemed to be - the posher the function, the less likely you were to be allowed anywhere NEAR the buffet. You were merely 'staff' and got a plate of sandwiches in the kitchen. Admittedly, I also remember doing some gigs where we were offered first dibs at the buffet - and this was clearly to the great annoyance of some of the guests. I remember a Hooray Henry at one do being particularly offended. He told us in no uncertain terms that we needed to 'learn our place' and threatened to 'sort us out' later.... but I suspect the shampoo may have been doing most of the talking here...

  35. Why do vegans and vegetarians feel the need to make themselves sound special? I dont like fish or gammon for example so I'd just avoid it at a buffet, it's a buffet so you just take things you like, aren't allergic to or have moral issues eating. If there's nothing you like get a McDonald's on the way home! 😋

  41. Any function bands I've played in and there have been many, the perceived success of the evening is generally directly related to the quality of the buffet!

  42. I think if I'd paid out £30 k or whatever the average wedding costs I'd be a bit miffed if the band, cleaners, waitors and heaven forbid - DJ went to the buffet first - even if the organisers said to (and I've played at ones where they have - host's delusions of booking rock stars syndrome I think...) id refrain until after the guests. Just seems wrong to me!!

  45. Well, that is invariably the problem of buying things. If you buy something that isn't quite what you want and something else comes out later, that is a normal part of purchasing. This stuff we have today is complete junk compared to what is going to be out in several years, so it is down to whether something is out that does close to what you want, when you want it, knowing that at sometime later, you can guarantee that something better will be out. Well, that is in the real world, I suppose in the guitar / bass world it will be 'oh these new helixes aren't a patch on the original mk1s from just before the 20s'

  46. I normally go straight into the desk pre EQ from an active bass so the front of house only has the digital desk EQ before it hits the audience, I'm hopefully going ampless altogether, bass to BDDI (or similar) to desk, Desk to in ears, done.

  47. I bought this Precision bass just over 3 years ago I think. It's originally a Squier VM and had satin finished maple neck/fretboard. Not long ago I'd had it up for sale as I'd sort of 'gone off of it'. However, I bought a Mexican Blacktop P bass neck for it. It's now my number 1 bass. The new neck has lacquer finish, which I prefer, and the much nicer looking spaghetti style Fender logo on the headstock. I went the whole way and got an F neck plate as well I shouldn't like this bass at all as I've never been one for natural finishes, but this is now such a lovely bass. It feels nice, and with some flatwounds on it, it sounds gorgeous. They're not the best photos, but here we go...
