  1. No, but if you hum it, I'll punch your face in. To misquote Suggs on The Young Ones.

  2. Well, that's sold me into going. "Come and be part of the meme." Er, no. Whilst there's a lot to be said for the sheer insanity to dream all this stuff up, there are certain things outstanding which need to be addressed. Firstly, this guy is a tool and if you go to this show you're enabling his narcissism and literally sticking the middle finger up to the musicians he screwed over to book his first tour and were left out of pocket trying to get back to America. Secondly, the music is crap. You're going to heckle, not to see your favourite band. It's not 1986. This guy's stuff has had its time and it flies so in the face of the current "Mumford and sons acoustic indie crap" which is somehow popular that you know that nobody would go and see it were it not for the story and "irony factor." Thirdly, it's doing someone else's band out of a slot. Melodramatic possibly, but everyone who's been in original bands has struggled to get a fan base and play bigger and better gigs. To see this knob blag it all especially when his tunes are crap quite irritates me. The originals scene is hard enough if you don't do insipid acoustic crap, but to see this guy and his wife literally screw folk over and then get asked back really is irritating especially when there are many members of the forum whose respective bands would just destroy this jumped up, narcissistic, hair metal donkey's music. It's a sad day that "irony" has now replaced "talent" as the driving factor. Welcome to the apocalypse.

  3. You may have seen this on the For Sale pages recently. It's an early 90s ESP Horizon, complete with futuristic conputer lettering on the headstock. It's a very comfortable bass, and is in superb condition. But don't be fooled, it growls - it's brutal through my Tech 21 dug preamp. And seemingly endless sustain! I'm not convinced by the 3 band EQ - it's got a sweepable mid control, and the whole thing just invites endless tinkering. I can't stop tweaking it. No complaints about the sound though! A big thank you to @cetera for a fun afternoon! Here 'tis:

  4. I know, I told them ages ago how it should be done. What's left to discuss ? I think I'm the only one here professionally qualified to put E, A, D and G in the right order. I've got a certificate and everything. EDIT: I've attached a copy of my certificate to remove any doubt that may be lingering in people's minds.

  5. This is so blatantly anti five & six string bass that I have reported it to the irrelevant authorities, from whom you can expect a summons at any time where you will be expected to list every possible combination of tuning or 4, 5, 6 & 7 string basses.

  6. Since you are quoting me, and quoting me incorrectly, let me clarify what I have said and how the WD-800 came about. I have said that it is not possible to design a higher powered Walkabout that sounds exactly the same as the original Walkabout because of the was the power amplifier works. The very benefit of it's dynamics is also the very thing that prevents scaling that design up to a higher powered yest otherwise identical Walkabout. On Talkbass, a number of dedicated Walkabout devotees created a thread about where they would wish the Walkabout might evolve to IF there was a follow-up model, knowing that it wouldn't (couldn't) be identical. Players listed their likes and also their dislikes of the existing amp and what they would like to see changed or added to maybe make it better for players gigging out. Some specific changes that were asked for included a (much) quieter fan, aux input, headphone output, more power, a sweepable high pass filter, no pull-switch type controls and smoother operation of all controls. Of course they wanted to keep the tone and feel as close as possible. The resulting amp is the result of a collaborative effort based on this player input which resulted in an amp that's quite close in tone and feel (but not identical) to the original WA but also includes enhancements that allow it to go to places that were simply impossible due to the significant limitations of the original model. If somebody really wants an original, there's nothing stopping them because they are readily available used. If the original Walkabout is loud enough for you, great, but you don't represent other player's needs anymore that they represent yours. As far as the power rating, due to the way the preamp gain and driver stages are designed there is some distortion generated in the preamp proportional to gain/level that is almost the same as in the original Walkabout. At higher levels, that distortion is very much a part of what made the Walkabout popular and the WD-800 follows this signal path quite closely. The power amp itself (though it can not be accessed since the aux in and fx return are pre-driver stage) is capable of about 700 watts (RMS) at 0.1% distortion and about 750 watts (RMS) at 1% THD, though this is not how the amp is being used. Why don't you reserve your comments until you get an opportunity to play one and spend some time exploring both its similarities and differences to the original WA?

  7. I've been out of work with stress for a couple of years. Had a job interview earlier today - just had a message to say they were very impressed and asked if I can start next Monday. Now what can I spend that money on???

  8. Huge respect from me to anyone who can build a business from scratch generating £2M of revenues and supporting the livelihoods of 10 staff; and at the same time providing bass tuition to 15,000 paying subscribers. Even more impressive following a career limiting injury.

  9. Just to be clear, it’s not about Scott, it’s about an LA pro, one of about 4 or 5 on that sewn-up LA session scene where the P bass thing is an actual thing. So much of this thread is about “naaaa, just do your own thing”. No, do the thing that gets the job done, because that what a professional of anything does. We’re not talking about some crappy engineer who you’ve payed £50 to record your bands demo, we’re talking about producers who really REALLY know what they’re doing, and more importantly what they want....and they’re paying the bass player. Do other Basses exist? Yes. Are there recordings with other Basses on? Yes. But the video is talking about ‘Pro session players’ (who probably will all tell you the same thing) and is getting information from an LA session beast.....who really knows the game and what is expected of everyone in his circles. Do session players matter? Not if you don’t care about doing that, but that is what the video is about, so why do you care? Lol So again, why is everyone getting their nose out of joint like they’ve been held at gun-point to buy a Precision? Si

  10. Why are people getting their noses out of joint because there’s a video where someone at the top of their game in a particular field is telling you an observable fact about his job? Si

  11. I am looking for a bass I had made specially for me by Andy Farrel of Nottingham. I sold it a few years ago and have regretted it ever since. It's in the style of a Musicman in maple with one pickup. It's a through neck model. I have traced it to two years ago when it was part exchanged in R&T music of Barrow in Furness. That's where the trail ends. Any help would be most grateful. If you own it or have ever seen it please let me know. Thanks in advance.k

  12. Know what? I can proudly say I've been practicing Hit Me With Your Rhytym Stick daily, and am now playing it at almost full speed. Have to say I'm quite pleased about that, especially as I've only been playing bass less than 6 months (OK, but with many years of guitar behind me). I didn't think my fingers would ever be able to do this 😃

  15. A novice's error, my dear ahpook! You haven't considered tuning by harmonics, using a polychromatic tuner or even 5,6,8 & 12 string instruments! A common mistake made by those without the benefit of Advanced Proficiency - Turny-Twisty Things at Top Of Bass Guitar' degree (correspondence course - $99.99 including embossed & gilt certificate )

  18. My cabs finally turned up today. So here's a bit of a review as promised, for anyone who's interested. Firstly the weight. Ok to be fair they're not lightweight cabs. But they're certainly not massively heavy either. Certainly much lighter than my current Bugera 2x10. The 2x10 is listed at around 23kg and I'd say that's probably about right. Surprisingly the 1x15 is noticeably lighter. Build quality wise they appear to be extremely well made and absolutely rock solid. If have no qualms about throwing them in the car and gigging them. Feature wise. They only have a single connector on the back, so no option to daisy chain the cabs. Not a problem for me as I have 2 outputs on the amp but it could be an issue for some. The connector is a dual purpose speakon / jack lead connector though so at least it gives you the option to use either kind of lead. The handles are pretty good, functional, solid and look smart enough. They're also flat and slightly recessed so it gives you the option to use or stack them sideways which is nice. The 2x10 has a built in horn which is angled upwards so it's directed towards the player. I'm not sure if this is genuinely a "feature" or just a gimmick but it seems to make sense. There is no switch or volume control for the horn so it's always on which is a bit annoying, having said that it puts out a pretty balanced sound so as not to be intrusive. In fact it's barely perceivable, but this could be a lot to do with amp setup as I tend to roll the top end down anyway. Maybe it would be more noticeable to people who like a trebly sound or play slap. Looks wise. Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I genuinely think they look really good. They look a lot better "in the flesh" than in the pictures or YouTube videos I've seen. The Tolex is well fixed and looks fairly robust, not the paper thin stuff you get on some budget gear. The metal grills are well finished and really solid. The logo's look quite nice and are more golden than they look in pictures. The whole rig, 1x15 and 2x10, is actually reasonably compact, certainly not 80's half stack or full on fridge sized. So no problems on a modest stage. Sound. Well it's early days and I haven't had much chance to play through them yet, but first impressions is they're quite neutral. Maybe what you would expect from a company more known for making hi-fi and PA speakers. It suits me as I'm happy to let the amp, bass and effects pedals create the tone, but probably not for someone looking for a particular sound. The drivers appear to be extremely well built. I turned my 300w head up full and gave it the beans and the cabs never even broke a sweat, but the house windows nearly fell out, so I'm pretty confident they'll be fine for any gig I'm likely to throw at them. Value for money. I'm very happy with them and I'd say they're an absolute steal for the price they were being sold. Fair enough they will probably have less second hand value than an empty bean can, but that was never the reason I bought them. Even then, at the price I paid I could use them as firewood in a couple of years and who cares?

  19. A fair point. I should have said his music is "derivatively challenged." Not crap. At all. 😋 However, it just kind of strikes a raw nerve in me how he treated his bandmates. The fact that I find his music cliched, hackneyed 80's throwback dreck is just an extra justification for wondering what's happening in the originals scene where the underworld will book this tool. Now for the best bit. 2 of my closest friends are actually going. I declined their invitation. "But you like rock and metal Andy!!" was their reply. I had to literally hit myself on the back of the head to get my eyeballs to come down from inside my skull, they had rolled so far.

  20. +1 for this. I would not be remotely surprised to see a few tedious hipster types turn up, iToys at the ready to vlog the whole ironicalised experience: "Hey everybody and welcome to my channel! Tonight me and Jemima are in the Underworld to see the global digital sensation Threatin - the awesome dude whose digital tour like literally broke the internet. This is a like totally exclusive gig with only a few selected attendees as you can see (waves camera around unsteadily showing a handful of hipsters standing around holding skinny lattes in one hand and their phones in the other). We're here to immerse ourselves in the like whole ironicalised experience. And hey, here he is!" Holds camera up as Threatin swaggers on, trips over a cable and limps up to the mic. The camera wavers as he howls his way through all the tracks on his latest digital album - Pole In Ur Hole, Drop De Dax, Oh Yeh Baby, Baby Baby Me At The ABC (Adult Baby Club), Gimme All Your Money, I Eat Ur Az, Yeh Baby Yeh (Don't Stop I'm Cummin) etc. "Hey, wasn't that just like so AWESOME? And look at this like cool merch! Cropped T-shirt (emblazoned with 'Thretin Behavior' and displaying ironic loose threads and pulls) only £49.99. CD artwork (CD case with a paper disc carrying a download code), yours for twenty-five pounds, exclusive tour poster (which has just one date on it) for thirty - this is just like so cool. I guess it's a shame you couldn't be here, but if you liked this, don't forget to hit Like and subscribe!" I now feel ill after writing that.

  25. Fernandes the Revival Precision Bass Great Japanese Fernandes from the early 80s (I assume) . It plays easily with a low action and sounds just great. The pickguard has been replaced by one from Fender Japan (no extra holes drilled) and the pickup is a Seymour Duncan spb2. The pickup covers are a later addition. This pretty P has a lot of battle scars all around the body. It looks well used. Nothing serious though, only cosmetic damages. All functions like it should. It's pretty light, I think a tad below 4kg. I'd rather not sell this bass, but I actually don't need it anymore and can use the money elsewhere. But if my G&L asat semi hollow or my Fernandes the Revival jazz sells first, this will probably be withdrawn. Price: €550 / £495 (payment in euro's) I'm located in the Netherlands, but I am happy to ship at buyers expense and risk.

  27. Hi there, I have 5 spools of single core cable for wiring of equipment. Each I different colour. They are each 7/0.2 Single core, PVC insulated. Each reel must be over 100m Long. I would imagine they would be suitable for wiring pedals or other similar. Would this be of interest to anyone? Is it any good for this kind of thing? I don't want anything for it, but cost of postage would be good, if it needs shipping. If anyone wants a few meters off each roll I can do that too, if you cover the cost of postage. (Large letter probably).

  28. This thread contains some great music, but given the OP's specific request for foundations to learn walking bass, then I reckon Frank's list is the place to start before exploring some of the more recent music. I'd add that most of the albums on Blue Note from about 1951-1963 will have tunes that are in the same style, and the recordings themselves are very good with clear bass. Once you get into the mid-60s, Miles's 2nd Quintet and John Coltrane Quartet took a lot of jazz into the 'modern' era. These lineups produced my favourite music, but in terms of learning walking bass they're a bit further away from "entry level", especially albums like Miles Smiles and A Love Supreme. For history and lots of written snippets, John Goldsby's The Jazz Bass Book is well worth a read.
