  1. Decided it was time to treat myself to a new bass 😀, and what’s the point of that if I don’t share it with like-minded individuals. The look takes a little getting used to, but the comfort and finishing is top notch! The sound is very classy. Less agressive than my SR1200, and not as mellow as my 004. Much happiness.

  2. Rather wonderful, actually. I began playing the nyckelharpa in 2015, and started attending a regular Scandinavian music session held in a room over a pub. Over the xmas period, we temporarily relocated to a room above a different pub, as our usual venue was booked up with parties. The lovely people at this second pub (which also regularly hosts gigs) then asked our session organizer to put on a monthly evening of Scandi music in the main bar for the regular punters, with a smaller group of players than regularly attend the session (which can get quite large and a bit ramshackle at times, with maybe 15-20 people of all levels of ability). Last night was the first one. I expressed an interest, and to my surprise (most of the session people are way better than me) I was invited along to play. I switched between playing nyckelharpa and percussion, as my repertoire on the harpa is fairly limited, and unlike the other players, I'm not up to sight-reading the tunes. The pub cleared a table for us in a corner of the bar, and we sat around it and played for over 2 hours. The other performers (there were eight of us altogether) are all really good, and also lovely people. Being a part of that performance, playing music I cared about with musicians I like, respect and admire, was a joyous thing indeed. The audience was small, but appreciative, and I went home through the snow with a feeling of great satisfaction.

  4. In our secret mountaintop admin/mod headquarters the other evening, the 19th century cognac and Cuban cigars were on the go following our usual 7-course banquet** when one of my colleagues used an altogether different and rather, errm, earthier epithet than 'twerps'. I dare not repeat the word here, but suffice it to say that it was of such vehemence that charic nearly choked on a truffle and Silvia fainted. ** you didn't really think the marketplace subs were being spent on software upgrades, surely?

  5. I wasn't in anyway, as I'm planning some experiments with strings this year, but my band (after last night's gig) seem to be heading for the collective purchase of at least a small mixer and some monitors. The good thing about that is that we've reached a level where we need them 🙂

  6. OK fellow bass players. I've just done my first update of 2019 and uploaded a new batch of 30 bass transcriptions to the website. I've also made a few improvements to a handful of the existing ones. They are all completely FREE for you to download or view - please help yourselves. http://tomreadbass.co.uk To see which the new charts are, type "Feb 2019" into the search box! We've got new bass transcriptions for Jefferson Starship, Mumford & Sons, Manic Street Preachers, Ocean Colour Scene, Deep Blue Something, Simon & Garfunkel, Green Day, Blur, Killers, Coldplay and many more! We're now up to 651 free bass transcriptions - the biggest resource of its kind in the world. I found out yesterday that bass tutors around the world are using my site for learning resources for their students! I thought that was rather cool. Please do share this information, and let your fellow bassists know about this resource.

  7. Well, I'm still in, and it's definitely important that I don't spend anything on gear, because I've just made a mockery of the whole thing by buying this: and also booking it in to have all the race parts swapped over from my other mini. So it seems like if I save money on one thing, that just creates a kind of pressure that makes me spend it on something different. If I'd have sworn not to spend any money on cars presumably I would now be negotiating the purchase of a nice Gyrocopter or something similarly daft.

  8. Poor Silvia! You want to be careful with all that fine dining & whatnot - gout is a harsh mistress! Also, I hope the cigars were partaken on the verandah, rather than in the dining room. Mods HQ is defined a workplace in The Management of Health & Safety in the Workplace Regulations (1999). 😛

  11. Price reduction to 1100 pounds. Very rare Bossa ujb-5 in great condition. Swamp ash body, 3 piece maple neck/ebony fingerboard, gotoh hardware, famous 18v bossa preamp with bass/mid/treble and the proprietary bossa dual coil/single coil switch. It weighs just under 4 kg. Everything works as it should, truss rod very smooth and responsive, tuning keys are smooth, frets with very little noticeable wear, bridge perfect apart from some slight discoloration at the edges. It has a wear spot between the pickups under the b string. The bass feels, plays and sounds like a very high quality instrument that it is. I 'm based in EU Athens Greece, and shipping to UK and EU is included in the price. It takes up to 5 working days. The bass will be properly and safely packaged. Trades considered with p and jazz basses(4 strings) and cash my way. Better pics

  12. EUR 600 / GBP 515 This is Ibanez´ own interpretation of a Precision Bass. The most obvious differences to a Fender P are the pickups. This is from a time when Fender wasn´t offering any P/Js. Also the position of the pickups is different, the split coil is closer to the neck, and the J pickup is also closer to the bridge than one would expect. The bass does have a deeper growl than the normal P bass, and the middle position with both pickups sounds a bit different to the standard P/J sound. Only the very first ones of these had white block inlays, more common are the later black blocks. The bass doesn´t have a serial, the headstock says IBANEZ only. It´s exactly the version that comes up first in the 1975 Ibanez catalogue, before they introduced serials and switched to the Silver Series instruments. The nut width is 40mm, the neck is very comfortable to play. The back of the neck is in perfect condition, there are no marks at all. The frets are in good condition too. I read somewhere that the bodies of the early ones were made from mahogany. On the few spots where the dents on the finish are deep enough to expose the wood it actually looks darker than the usual ash or alder, so I guess it really is mahogany. Everything is original and unmolested. The body has some smaller dents, the white finish has aged to a nice vintage white. The neck ist straight, the trussrod works, the pickups are strong. The electrics are fine, no scratchy pots. The weight is 4,2 kg. I´m in Berlin, international shipping is no problem.

  13. Absolutely gorgeous G&L SB1 in genuine 'Road worn' condition. No belt sanders were used in the creation of this bass! In my oppinion this is the ultimate vintage P style bass, it was after all Leo's final go at perfecting the 'Precision' template. The neck is dated August 1987, the body Jul '87. I had the input jack replaced with a Switchcraft unit and the tone pot replaced with a vintage spec CTS, as both originals had become a little cranky. Other than that it's all original. It has the wonderful played-in feel of a vintage instrument that has been played for 1000s of hours, and is a real joy to use. The frets are in fantastic condition, the truss rod works perfectly and it's currently strung with some chunky flats. I'm after £795 collected from Margate, and can include a plush leather Warwick gig bag. If postage is required, I can include a hard case instead.

  14. With regret I am selling this stunning 1988 Vigier Passion in a beautiful greenburst finish (quite rare) which i picked up on this forum in April of last year from Maut, thanks Niels. Why am i selling? I also have a series 111 Passion bass (Yes very lucky) Rare chance to own a beautiful graphite necked Vigier..They don't come up very often as owners (rightly so,reluctantly sell) This bass dates back to 1988.. The bass has a few dings and cracks in the laquer (very common in older Vigiers) Checking on headstock by the V..See pictures.but overall, very good condition for a 31 year old bass!! The Carbon neck is in pristine condition though 😎 so no dead spots..imense sustain.ringing harmonics..and the frets are in very good condition..and best of all no truss rod..neck totally straight.. I had to change the Schaller 3D bridge as the original saddle rollers were seized and no amount of grease or heat could make them budge..So an £80 upgrade there and also £75 on new Schaller M4 tuners in Black and gold..Black no longer available!! They look the business The bass has such a slim and fast neck, which is a true joy to play..and the bass sounds truly fantastic. 2 Benedetti single coil pickups.I frequency switch.cut/neutral/boost.1 pickup toggle switch.1 volume knob,1 tone knob,1 parametric frequency knob. All very usable and can create a myriad of sounds.. Bass will come with hard case..(brand new)Happy to ship or you can arrange courier..Will be well packed.Happy for you to see and tryout near Edinburgh.. Not looking for trades sorry. Any questions please pm me.

  15. Played it again, loved it, will be keeping it. Fender Precision made in 1978 The colour is a rather uncommon trans (wine or cherry ?) red over a book matched ash body. 100% original as far as I know, apart from the Fender spare bridge cover which I bought new with Fender screws. I'll send pics of the guts and neck pocket (S8xxxxx under the pickguard as well as on the headstock, J Flores, FRR37, FRR44 stamps on request). 41.7mm at nut 4.6kg approx Frets are in very good condition. The finish has serpent skin-like cracks on the edge of the body, it does absolutely not fall apart, and a thin superficial layer peels off, on the upper side of the back only (seems that when you scratch it with your fingernail it comes off and leaves a proper finish underneath, that might be an old layer of polish or something). I've read this is happening on some of Fender's finishes from 78 and 79. It plays absolutely perfectly and sounds really good : superb overtones and loads (yes) of sustain, focused lower mids. Really reactive to your playing style, from the subtle to the punchy dub / punk. It has been cared for during its life, no dirty marks of slapping or plectrum around the usual areas. Comes from a retired musician in a French variety band : no aggression but long sessions of playing, resulting in a very resonant instrument (a bit of story-telling). Comes with a £100 worth tobago hard case. Price : £1590 or 1800€ Located in Northern France, over to London once in a while. Shipping is not a problem. My feedback can be checked, I've met a few members irl. Now the pics I will regret it but I have to sell a bass for money, and will keep the cheaper BB1000 I've put up for sale for now as a placebo year-of-birth-Pbass

  16. You hear horror stories about folks getting bits of gear nicked, in some cases entire van-loads. I myself was deprived of everything except my bass and amp many years ago by some lightfingered scumbag. So just in case, I have for some time been keeping a continually-updated Word document list of all my items of musical equipment worth over £50. There's a tabulated list of everything, with full descriptions and serial numbers and distinguishing features etc., plus some pages of photos. An example photo page is below, again with attention drawn to serial numbers and distinguishing marks. It takes a bit of time and care putting it together, but I think it's worth it because you never know. Does anyone else do anything like this, or am I alone in my paranoia?

  19. Our first Real Gig - as in, advertised on Facebook, and we had to set up for ourselves and got to do a soundcheck! (As opposed to om slots where we just had to walk up and plug in to the house band's rig.) Preparation a bit fraught, as the duo who were supposed to open for us had split up a few days before over the attitude of one of them to the venue organiser, so we had to make a well-rehearsed one-hour setlist last for two hours. It went well though. The Old Abbey Taphouse in south Mcr is a tiny place and most of the space is given to the band, so 15-20 people were a crowd! We don't have our own full rig yet, so the mics went through the house PA, and keys, two guitars, and bass each through our own amp. The drums were the drums... Despite that, the sound quality and balance were pretty good. First time I've taken my little Markbass 500 combo out to a proper venue, and it held its own really well in the mix 🙂 We were all nervous before, but as soon as we started playing we just remembered how much we love playing together, and it really flew. The "crowd" were obviously really into it too, and we've been asked back. Venue looked after us really well, an excellent night and looking forward to more to come.

  20. Well, based on the fact that he didn't, then I'd have to say definitely not. However, based on him saying "Of course, you may disagree with some of my reasoning and want to tweak your bass in some way or another, which I hope you do." on his website I'd have to say he kind of gives his blessing.

  38. They Shall Not Grow Old was absolutely superb! I'd even go as far as to say one of the greatest televisual experiences I've ever had. It gave a humanity and reality to WW1 that I've never come close to experiencing before with any other documentary I've ever seen. If you haven't already seen it. Please watch it. If the Beatles thing is only one tenth as good it'll still be the greatest music documentary ever made. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

  44. Epic fail on at least two levels. 1. Define 'best' - best chops, best playing for the song, best songwriting...? Get promptly mired in controversy. 2. Last time I checked, people don't play bass with their genitals, therefore 'female bassist' is as relevant as 'gay bassist' or 'black bassist.'

  46. The word "minor" has two meanings. 1. For intervals: Some intervals (second, third, sixth, and seventh) have a choice of two notes. The lower choice is called "minor" and the higher choice is called "major". 2. For scales: a "minor scale" is referring specifically to the quality of the third. So if the scale contains a minor third, it's a minor scale. If the scale contains a major third, it's a major scale. All regardless of all the other notes in that scale. So, with your example of a natual minor scale: The notes of C natural minor are: C D Eb F G Ab Bb C The intervals are: D : major second Eb: minor third F: perfect fourth G: perfect fifth Ab: minor sixth Bb: minor seventh
