  1. Hi folks. Recently acquired US Lakland BG 5. Near mint condition, I am the 2nd owner, the original owner purchased directly from Lakland. Strung with TI flats, comes with original Lakland case. I received this instrument as part of a trade deal, I’m just not a P-bass player, but take my word for it this instrument sounds very good. See below a short clip of me playing this bass direct into GarageBand with no effects or eq’ing, just a bit of foam under the bridge. Open to trade offers. 0D0ED0F3-7657-466E-8985-9B45DABA75BF.MOV

  4. Thanks in no small part to the encouragement and good sense on this thread I am buggering on regardless. In fact I just applied to 2 more bands, one for a dep job the other asking for a pro bassist. So thank you all again.

  5. Lol - just been dealing with a completely arrogant / lying guitarist (on Gumtree) who wants to audition for a dep role with the function band I'm in. Has put me in a very sarky frame (hence my responses to krsipn!). "I have played in a functions band in the past yes. They didn't have a name but they were excellent and very professional." "Ron - thanks very much, but all the applicants we are going forward with have provided YouTube clips of function bands they have played with and all the function bands had names! Without such examples I'm afraid we can't consider your application further. Thank you very much for your application and I wish you all the best with your professional musical career. Al" "It's your decision but it's a bad decision. I know for a fact that I have the best guitar sound and skills for your band and just because I'm not showing you a video of a fuction band that I was in, you are penalizing me for this, which is very childish, unfair and arrogant as you clearly think your band is one of the best which it is not. You only have one gig per month lol I'm the best candidate and You want the best guitarist candidate right? Why would you let me, the best guitarist go just because of one video. That's honestly really pathetic. Just from the way you've handled this, I am now completely refusing my services to you." Ron - thank you, that was helpful and very insightful. My life has, indeed, been full of bad decisions and this decision to choose other guitarists to audition is clearly just another example of me messing up my life and that of my band-mates. I will one day learn. But maybe it will be too late by then for me to recover from the many mistakes I have made? Who knows? You do sound really amazing and you are right, you are most likely much too good for us as a band which only has one gig per month lol. I promise therefore not to waste the time of someone so talented as you going forward, and I am sure you will find a much better band than us very soon, given that you are the 'best guitarist' we could possibly have hoped for. You are completely correct to refuse your services to us.

Non-smoking environment as usual. It has some marks, but nothing serious. This is a very clean, uncoloured and powerful sounding amp (the 600 Watts announced are really there). I really like the sound dead flat : very transparent and accurately reproducing the sound of your instrument. It's terrific with electric basses (fretless basses show their real potential) and of course with any acoustic instrument. The amp has been fully revised in January 2019 by AI USA and is road ready for the next 10 years. Pay attention that the floor noise on these "old" amps is a bit higher than on recent amps (-85 dB when the most silent new amps can go as low as -120 dB), so it's not dead quiet especially when you put your ear on the speaker... So there is a very very very very very very very very very very slight floor noise which is not amplified even when the amp is turned to the full power (600 Watts !!!). Nothing compared to the inherent floor noise of a valve amp which is way more audible. Link to Acoustic Image : https://www.acousticimg.com/assets/docs/manual_amp_head.pdf What you see is what you get ! Look at the pictures to see the real condition : some marks, due to the age, but nothing serious at all. Don't hesitate to ask for more. Dust is offered.

  9. I have been off-loading some basses recently as I plan to move house but as part of this consolidation plan, I have a acquired a new gem from ACG. It's a new scale length that Alan's been working on and I think it just suits me perfectly and the sound is amazing from such a short scale - 26.5". Is this new start of a new wave of short scale basses?

  10. So I did the deed and traded my little tiny 12" BF cab for the 1X15 I was after. I am sad to see the little thing go it was truly a box of wonder - but who knows what the future holds? Maybe we'll reunite one day. For now I had to trade as funds are exhausted. This is what my A rig now looks like:

  18. I can't really add too much to this thread as I haven't tried the new black labels, but I can vouch for the haussel PUs in terms of growl. I absolutely loved the active haussel's I had in my sandberg (MM and a P). The thing growled like a monster. Personally the delanos were a little too polite to my taste.

  22. +1 About practice, the point is to do it whether you want to practice or not. Having to 'want to' practice may just make you feel worse. Practice in a focused way for 20 minutes, no noodling, then take ten minutes off; then come back and go another twenty. Then put the bass away, and importantly, put it out of your mind till the next practice. This kind of focus should ensure that depression doesn't run things--you do.

  24. John Lennon had one on the famous Rooftop Gig in January 1969, where during "Don't Let Me Down" (his own song!) he completely forgets the words and instead sings something like "And no reelesa godyebloog jegoobmy". You can see Ringo cracking up at this.

  26. The purpleheart laths are glued and trimmed to rough shape. You can see the lath that was on the top of the pile and got to the light! The light and finish application will darken the edges significantly, but you can see the sort of contrast there will be by just dampening it: I've also straightened up the neck against the centre-line and worked out where the heel sits flat on the back wood: This area will be cut out completely before I glue the purpleheart to the back - forward of it will be the more tricky carve job to wrap round the neck and neck/heel transition

  27. Ever since I started playing I wanted an early Warwick Thumb bass - the first proper bass I tried was a friends 5 string thumb and it is just a beautiful bass. My 30th present came a year early as bass and finances collided and I got my dream bass - a stunning 1985 Warwick thumb with a few ‘custom shop’ factory features... it then spent 4-5 years on my wall not being played. Ergonomics were ok but the tone and how it played never was first of second choice for the things I was doing. At meet ups with other bassists the Thumb was always popular and people enjoyed playing it but I just didn’t click with it. I recently traded it for a bass I was expecting to like but not love that I would try for half a year or so and move on. But from first play I realised it was a special instrument for me and my technique- I’ve tottaly clicked with it and it gets most the playing time now. my thoughts... Follow your GAS if you can afford, don’t hoard but try out things that you want to try out some things can’t be done off the shelf - if you know what you want, go custom. some makers build on a custom basis, if you like their work find s way to try it then that’s a good idea if you know and like the builder. Custom instruments don’t hold their value, either be prepared for the loss in value if you end up selling it on, or really really know what you’re after. I still think some instruments come together and seem to have some magic. Personally I would rather have a great instrument that is 90% what I want than a 100% my spec and wants that is a competent but not a great instrument - my temptation given £3k to spend would either be to try something I had Gas for (secondhand so I wouldn’t loose too much if it didn’t click) or try lots to find something that is great - someone local to me has an early stingray. On spec it’s ok, in your hands, even with corroded strings on it absolutely sings.

  28. I think I'll check it out tonight. I'm a big fan of Dre and the whole G Funk thing. Dr Dre is a fascinating character. He has this rapper persona of being some sort of old school LA gangsta street hood, whereas the reality is that he's been a succesful DJ, producer and composer since the age of 19 before forging a name as rapper , initially in an almost Ringo-with-the-beatles type role with NWA where they just gave him the occasional relatively light hearted track to front on top of his DJ/producer duties. Since then he's gone on to become one of the most succesful rappers ever in his own right, produced and composed on a shedload of hit records for other people and forged a billion dollar business empire.

  29. Loving it, thanks. Very much what NFF says. I'm trying hard to get the strings broken in and see what it sounds like then but the probability is that I'll put some flats on it. I really like how easy it is to play and how light it is. I've been having trouble (as documented elsewhere) learning a couple of pieces and my thinking was that i could use a SS bass to get myself fully up to speed and then transfer to the "big" bass. The theory seems to be holding up in practice but the bass is turning out to be so much more than I'd expected. I always take a spare bass to gigs and this is perfect - I'd happily gig it as the main bass too. So, all in all, very pleased. Thanks for doing the market research for me 😁

  30. @sifi2112 Yeah great suggestion! My interest isn't what's on the boards as much as the noises and sounds created with them and the context folks are using them in. I struggle to see where I need more than a bit of drive or eq so to see these 14 pedal behemoth boards I'm baffled - limited by my own tunnel vision no doubt - but I'm confident people are making far more interesting and textured noises than my brain could conjure up with the same wealth of tools!

  31. Looks good Lee650 ... so how about a little demo of the kind of various sounds you can get out of your setup ? Hoping video files can be added to threads Moderators ? This applies to all BCers with pedal boards, just think it would make this thread even better. (I’m awaiting some new switches for my ‘ramp’ pedal so I’ll post once new board complete lol)

  32. I somehow missed this thread until now. I've been singing the praises of the Gretsch Junior Jets for a while now. They're absolutely superb! I've had the Sunburst one for 6 months or so and when I plug it in I'm still surprised how big and fat it sounds. Also great tone and superb built quality. They definitely punch well above their weight and price point these.

  33. First time I had a proper big blank was forgetting the middle 8 on 'Californication', the song plods along and I suddenly thought "middle 8's coming up soon and I haven't got a scooby as to how it goes!". We must've played it at a dozen gigs before then without incident. Same band did 'Reptilia' and when the song breaks down to just guitar the guitarist would mess it up without fail at gigs. It became a running theme, Tim's jazz solo! Played in a trio and the guitarist was excellent,a great player but song structures were his Achilles heel. He wanted to play 'American Idiot' so we rehearsed it loads and it was ok but made me apprehensive. Started fine at the first gig but he soon lost the plot and we just ended up playing the riff in a never ending loop with no vocals! The drummer and I looking at each other and shrugging our shoulders a lot. These all happened a long time ago thankfully but the memories are still quite vivid 😳

  36. I have very fond memories of Oban. I opened a branch of Currys up there back in the seventies, staying at Mrs McLeod's guest house for the three months it took to train up the staff and get it all ready. Did loads of walking, got taught to fly fish, saw a good few bands and learnt to drink properly. It followed a few months in Dumbarton, 3 months in Glasgow and was followed by final stint in Wick and Thurso. Happy days..... Ooh, look at me getting all dewy-eyed and nostalgic..... I served Rod Stewart a drink once in a night club in Hamilton. That is my only claim to fame.....and I suspect he's forgotten all about it 😕

  39. Yes. Happened to me a few times. We used to play losing my religion. We had played it for years. I knew it back to front. Then one night I could t remember how it went. I had to ask the guitarist what the first line in the lyrics. He told me, but I had forgotten the whole thing. It was a disaster. I had to pretend we had a tuning issue. Things is, I worried about it so much that it happened next time. Same song. Then again next time. My band mates were getting cheesed off. I had to sit down and learn it again! I think we dropped it not long after. It can just hit you. Something you know so well and it’s just blank.

  41. If it hasn't ever happened you haven't played enough gigs yet! It happens to everyone eventually and how you recover is the important part. At a gig a few months ago I was part way through singing a song that I first heard as a kid in 1959 and I have been playing in jazz bands and singing for years and suddenly the second verse was completely gone from my head so I developed a very bad coughing fit that lasted long enough to get to the next verse and get back on track. The people listening didn't even seem to notice but the the rest of the band were all doubled over laughing and still give me a hard time when we do the song and start telling me that the memory thing is the first thing to go at my age(72) but of course I pretend I can't hear them. 😉

  42. Thanks, I think you’re right. Next time (if there is one) I’ll know to check carefully before accepting the bass back. It’s just disappointing, I mean I know how to do the basic stuff like saddle height, check the intonation, truss rod etc, but I had thought that there might be some magic that a pro would be able to do.

  47. Now whilst I'm hoping that the body is properly glued up solid, I remembered @Andyjr1515 's next step after he'd glued up @TheGreek 's beauty. String it up and wait and see what - if anything - happens to the wood under tension. So that's what I did - and left it, for a week - between the living room, conservatory, and even the shed for a night. Moving from each area in this current winter, I was hoping to replicate the many thermal changes a bass would usually encounter, particularly if it was being gigged and travelling in a van and then onto a hot stage etc - though unfortunately those days are probably long gone 🤔 I still thought it should be subjected to different temperatures and humidity just to make sure it was ok. It's going to live in the living room once finished, but I had to be sure it was solid.

  48. 1970s prog rockers, that’s who. Mike Rutherford of Genesis, for example, would switch between guitar and bass within a song, often using bass pedals to fill out the bottom end when playing guitar.
