  3. @fleabag 's idea for the control chamber is to duplicate the purpleheart theme and mount the controls from the top on a purpleheart plate, similarly shaped to the pickup cover. It should look pretty good once the top is the right colour and finish. The controls are going to be straight-lined with jack on the top: ...sitting in a chamber below: ...under a cover which, once it's had its finish applied, will be the same colour as the pickup cover: Canon DSLR's struggle with reds and purples. The actual colour of the pickup cover is closer to the top photo than this. Still got to do the final filing and sanding of the lower cutaway, and maybe a bit more off the nose transition, but this is how the back is starting to look: ...and then later this afternoon I'll be sanding it all down to start applying the proper finish so I can then start turning my attention to stripping and staining the neck

  6. It'll take time. I'm happy for it to grow naturally, rather than push it. When Basschat first started we had about one post a day and I used to check it with my WAP phone. Obviously today things are different but I still think it'll get there - but I do need to pull my finger out and do some promotion/advertising. If you play guitar, feel free to post on the forum and get some topics going, and invite others to do so. We're very close to finding out what guitar is best for metal.

  9. For a bit of fun, thought it may interest some people doing these videos with a few of my basses, this is my 1978 Mustang bass that i picked up from Chicago Music Exchange last year, i really dig the pick on this thing, but the fingerstyle records beautifully and has a lot of thump!

I will get more use out of another Warwick or a 5 so I’m being sensible. Its in good condition, Lettering fading on neck pickup and couple of small marks on the body that come naturally with use, but overall great and the neck/headstock is pristine. Comes with original gig bag. original bass direct sales page: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/ABZ4_Blackburst.html Current photos available if interested, in the meantime my Instagram feed has a ton... http://www.instagram.com/kevinhidebass cheers! 12/03 reduced to £1,200 plus shipping.

  15. A known issue? Why the heck are they dragging their undercarriage then? As a working musician you could be at a serious loss due to the delay. In engineering, for example, tool makers like Snap-On have a no-quibble lifetime guarantee on their tools. If you present them with a broken one, they replace it immediately and then look at the causes of failure for product development to see how the tool can be improved. The mechanic can carry on working and everyone benefits. With a known issue there is no reasonable excuse for holding you up. What a bunch of mother-fenders!

  16. Something that caught me out, and is obvious I know, but I'd forgotten about it, is to work on your sounds through a speaker(s) which are akin to what you'll use on a gig. I went off all giddy and set up my presets using headphones, then had to readjust them as they were far too bright and fizzy through tweetered PA speakers (FOH), - I took one of the RCF tops home and used that to readjust - then I got caught out again using the Stomp as a traditional effects pedal through my untweetered rig (no DI)...they were all too dull again... 🙄 So now I've got basically the same presets, doubled up with different EQ for PA or rig...that Copy and Paste thing is verrry useful if you've been a biff like I was... 🙂

I've never learned this, but I got dropped into it by the mighty Victor Brox at my birthday jam last month. The first time I've been able to blag a bassline on a song I didn't know and have it sound like I did know it 🙂

  20. I designed this thing in my mind, combining features of my other basses and then made this somewhat visual using my impaired photoshop skills. Once I was happy about how things looked in the digital world I had it built by Vincent Guitars in the Netherlands. Now it is real and here to stay. Two bridge pickups in one casing - the front coil is sitting at sixties bridge pu position. They can both be switched on/off and in series/parallel using the 'jaguar style' switches. Slanted neck pickup for a more even tone across the strings. It crosses the E string at the usual jazz bass neck pu position. Thick Bubinga lacquered fingerboard because my Rickenbackers sound so awesome with it. Red Cedar body, Black Walnut top, Purpleheart+Maple neck. The thing is very resonant and lively, deep sounding. The pickups were also custom made by Vincent, I requested a tone somewhere between my Ric v63 (which has high output and this really warm but tight bottom end going on) and a regular jazz. Vincent tried out the v63 and agreed that is one great sounding bass. The pickups he came up with seem to be spot on for what I requested. When switching between modes you get these types of tone: Single coil (either) - Really snappy treble and tight lows. Somewhat scooped compared to the other two modes. The treble slightly differs between the two coils, I use both depending on the stack I play through. Parallel - The treble becomes more gentle but is still there and the midrange comes through better. This makes the instrument punch through mixes better which is sometimes a hard task with Jazz Basses. Series - Humbucker mode makes the bass sound 'bigger'. It becomes a lot more growly in this mode and can compete with my Rics for excellent rock tone no problem. I was amazed the first time I heard this! What do you think? Me I totally love it!

  21. Went in to buy a few things to upgrade the Sei Jazz bass, surrounded by some of the most expensive beautiful basses.Anyway, I wanted a pair of Nordy NJ5's but they didn't fit. So my second choice was the Bartolini B Axis, Ive heard great things about these pups. There a lot brighter than the regular classic Bart sound. So they came home with me. . Also I got some USA Lollypop Ultralight Hipshot tuners. I also wanted to try some new strings being a die hard DR man, but these have been in my mind for quite a while. Labella RX stainless steels.Talked for a while to the always knowledgable strong opinioned Mark who is a real gent. Anyway im fitting everything tomorrow so will give a review. And yes I do look like a redneck at a gun show.

  22. I'm not really sure where to put this thread, but i thought more relevant people will see it here... but if its more appropriate somewhere else, mods please move me I have a access to a very accurate laser scanner and reverse engineering software, so im able to digitise pretty much anything from the real world, so it can be precisely replicated. For example, if someone wanted a very specific neck profile copied from another guitar, i could scan the neck, create the CAD, and with a CNC router, you could in theory reproduce it. Im happy to offer these services for free to hobbyists as im creating content for my blog. Hit me up if you have questions.

  23. I got this yesterday as an ex demo immaculate condition. Less than half price. 4x10 speakers - 600w rms at 8ohm. These are the nexus cabs to compliment the impressive looking nexus range. Firstly it's VERY well made. Nice proper stuff n nuff paint covering but looks really well applied and thick without looking awful. Looks a really nice finished article. Back panel has input speakon, but they look like dual speakon where they can take a standard jack cable too, and a link socket to another cab. Also two horn switches for on and off, and full and half. First impression I had when I unboxed was ...... have they sent me the right cab? I looks for all intent and purposes like a small 1x15! But I've checked and it's a 4x10, it's amazing they can make them this compact. Memories of my old ashdown mag 410 deep where like carrying a house around. Weight is brilliant at 23kg - that's the same weight as a barefaced 410. With all the raving and praise barefaced get for lightweight cabs, it's amazing no one has mentioned these. Having owned a barefaced the laneys feel much more substantial and not in the slightest delicate like barefaced can. It feels solid and it's dimensions don't make you feel it could get knocked over or backwards. It's well proportioned and has enough weight to feel substantial. It is however still 23kg. Don't go getting carried away thinking this is like lifting a feather! Handles are quality metal and easily up to the job. Sound wise - and it's only had house play so far - is awesome. Very rich and filling sound. Nice and tight, but with something musical to it, rather than just tight. Paired with my quilter 800 it coped easily with very high and very low notes without losing any quality. It also sounds good whatever eq I seemed to put through it. It's going to get an outing at this weekends gig, which is quite a large one, so it'll have a proper test. It's even a really viable option for an 8x10 if needed - x2 cabs at 23kg each. And these cabs, considering what you get are cheap! You can get them new for around £500 - half of a barefaced st or 410. Specs are similar at 101db sensitivity and 23kg. I've never really followed the fashionable way when it comes to gear, so my quilter and laney partnership is rocking and rolling for less than a grand. And fits into the boot of any car with room for a whole host of other equipment too! Just need to sort a cover now.

  24. Hello, Here is a rare chance to get a bit of an Alpher feeling bass for a fraction of the price! This was put together and finished by me with top quality parts and finished with Tru-Oil. It's in great condition apart from a couple of dings (pictured) and is a great sounding bass! I'm only selling this as I don't play 4 string much, so this doesn't get played as much as it should. It's an Pau Ferro/Ebony Alpher Instruments neck (£450) which i had made, and if you don't know the name it is built i UK to a very high standard! The body is a Warmoth Alder Jazz bass body with flame maple laminate top (cost around £320). It has Tonerider Jazz Pickups which I intended to put in to get it going, but sound great so I left them in. The electronics are Volume, Volume, East Mid Sweep, Passive Tone and is a bit of a hybrid active/passive setup which really works. The rest of the hardware is Hipshot so all in all some top quality parts all round. Any questions feel free to send me a message. £780 Collection from Manchester (£25 Delivery Cost) Trades: Looking for a Music Man Stingray 5 string (just not black)

As I am unable to work out how to upload a pdf file to this listing, I will gladly forward you a copy via email if you wish to read it and also a hard copy will be supplied with the bass. Please note that I purchased bass directly from a professional bass player and Overwater endorsee who purchased it from new. It had-only ever been used for studio sessions, recording with some very famous artists including Brian Adams, Amy Winehouse and American X factor and again to confirm is in mint condition and very well looked after. Again this is confirmed on the letter of providence supplied by Chris May. 28. Yep BSSM is peerless and one of the soundtracks to my life. Saying that, I'll stick my neck out here and say that Californication, at least for me, is their best album. Considering that John was a dead man walking for many years after he first left the band, it was the comeback we all dreamed of but thought impossible. Hell of a vibe and tons of emotion caught on those sessions imho.

  30. After many, many years playing mainly Jazz Bass, I’ve recently acquired a Fender JMJ Mustang SS Bass and I’m blown away by it. I guess many people would say the same for a P Bass, but it sits really well in the band mix on both studio recordings and live gigs. Super impressed with it.

  32. There's some good stuff on their recent albums but most people haven't given them a chance. I still like the one hot minute album too. Soul to Squeeze is still his /their finest work and only a few pops and hammer ons in the middle eight rather than any slap.

  35. It's historical as far as I know. Originally music was mainly composed on a Grand or Great staff (stave) with 21 lines which covered the majority of the range of the orchestra or keyboard instrument it was written for. When the individual bass and treble parts were written out there was a lot of extra unneeded stave lines. To simplify this someone decided to split the stave into smaller 5 line staves. The Great Staff I used to play in a brass band and depending on the instrument needed to know both treble and bass clef (oh so long ago, all forgotten now!). Then one day whilst I was on trombone the conductor handed out the music and it was in the tenor clef! Yep, sight reading a new clef resulted in me producing some interesting notes probably not envisaged by the composer! The Different Clefs

  36. Looks are incredibly important to me, and to most of the musicians I know, whether their preference is relic-d or not. The thing I've found with many relic-d ( or genuinely worn) instruments is they simply feel better. Of course YMMV. And as Bassbiscuits said, something like a Fender to me just looks far better worn. I just don't like the look of a shiny new Fender. I remember when I first saw a picture of Jaco and the Bass of Doom, back in 1980 or so, I just thought the bass looked fabulous. Same with Rory's Strat. If I was to buy another Fender-type it would be a Limelight or Roadworn, unless I could stretch to real vintage. An Alembic on the other hand probably looks better to me reasonably pristine. However I don't generally like owning pristine instruments; the gigs we play, there is no way they'd ever stay that way.

  37. Treble and bass clef does my head in. For the sake of 2 tones why are they not the same notes just different octaves? FFS that has to be the man's stupidest idea since well ever. Unless someone can explain why they are different? Davo

  38. Like with women, for me it's all about looks first with basses and guitars 😉 . When looking for a new instrument it's shape and colour first and foremost, then how they play. If it looks wrong or ugly, even if it sounded sweet as a nut, I wouldn't buy it. As with leather jackets and denim jeans if a bass or guitar looks a bit battered through extensive use then they look cool. A fake worn look is anything but!

  39. Maybe its just me, but things like strats/teles/P basses and J basses can look good in slightly battered condition cos they are very workmanlike instruments, and have the history to plausibly end up in that state. But things like that Fodera just look damaged. It's beautifully crafted, with stunning wood etc, and then wrecked to look like its been played to death. Nah, not for me. Incidentally, i'd expect to see a decline in headstock fag burns now, as you can never smoke at the gig anyway...

  41. IANAL, but the invitation to treat etc still applies. It is, however, inadvisable to attempt to haggle over the price of items bought from a supermarket. There are a couple of exemptions - antiques, good sold at auction, products provided as part of a service. Having done literally minutes of research into this, there doesn't seem to be any way that it's legal not to price up instruments in PMT, either individually or with a price list (although they might be getting round this by having prices available online - the requirement seems to be that you can find the price without asking a member of staff). https://www.lawdonut.co.uk/business/marketing-and-selling/consumer-protection/unfair-trading-trade-descriptions-and-pricing-faqs#UTTDP12 says, in part: "More generally, failing to display prices could constitute unfair trading if the omission is likely to affect how customers behave. For example, customers might not choose to use your service if they knew in advance how much it would cost."

  42. I’ve been up there a few times and they need more space, IMO. I think they suffer from cabin fever as do us lot when we want to spend a bit more time than is “alotted” to try out a 3k bass, perhaps. I’ve literally been in a queue to plug something in up there and then it’s not as personal as you might like. Divise is a good description too, as I bought a Sandberg from them but they tried to persuade me to step up even higher, to the Xotic basses. In hindsight, I wish I had. On the flip side of that, I always wanted a Warwick and actually went there first to play a few secondhand ones. I was told “I didn’t want a Warwick and that Zender actually played a P bass on recordings.” I bought a SS1, from Beedster, in the end & it’s one of my favourite basses. Its like a jungle in Bass Direct. They should send David Attenborough up there to study human dynamics.

She agreed it was often well OTT and that ripped jeans fall into the same category. But she syas she likes ripped jeans because they have more character. As for us lot... she says it''s pathetic to get worked up over someone else's choice when it does you no harm at all. So that's put us all in our place!

  45. More to the point, how is the word actually spelled?! Relic'd? Relic-ed? Relicced? Using the word garlic as an example, there are references to something tasting "garlicky". So maybe the correct spelling should be "relicked" - but that conjours up images of an ice cream that has been licked by more than one person... Maybe the hyphen is all-important? I dunno. I do over-thing things sometimes

  47. Nothing wrong with an old bass that's got itself worn after years of gigging. What I don't like about "relicing" is that it falsely conveys the impression that the player has worn it out themselves via years of gigging, and that it's a much-loved but slightly abused instrument being played by a similarly seasoned "road warrior". What other possible reason is there for chiselling away at a perfectly good bass to make it look "road-worn"? It's fake news, is what it is.
