Maybe rock has nothing more to say for Bobby Gillespie - as a jaded, millionaire rock 'star' whose band (who I have dearly loved) haven't produced anything interesting for quite a while. His statement might have more to do with his lack of relevance than the real state of music. I seem to remember hearing that someone from Decca Records told the Beatles that guitar music was 'on the way out' in the 1960's; that rock had become jaded just before Nirvana and grunge hit the airwaves; that guitar bands were passé, then along came The Arctic Monkeys et al. New types of music will come along, and this is a good thing, but that doesn't mean that styles of the past (jazz, rock, country, classical, disco etc...) die out - they continue to evolve. RAWK RULEZ!

In my day, we had to listen to good old acoustic hand drills, and it goes without saying that this ::waves finger about:: was all fields. 😛

I’m still holding out for two band names featuring new town graffiti from my home town. One was a car park sign with the word ‘slagbonce’ sprayed across hence... Slagbonce Car Park ...and the other just two words sprayed on the wall of an underpass... President Youslags ...one day I’ll be in one of those bands.

The Napalm Death collaborative album with George Michael had it's place in history but made for difficult listening especially as George did the music and the Napalm's provided the vocal harmonies

I was just reading (on Facebook) the cheery story of one of our bass playing brothers, John VanZanten of Seattle, who about 14 years ago had his dream bass built by Mike Lull Guitar Works. Two weeks ago the bass was stolen, then the thief contacted Lulls in an attempt to sell it to them; Paul Schuster at Lull got photos, verification of the serial numbers etc and convinced the person who had it to bring it in as they had an interest in buying guitars for cash. The guy took it in and Mike Lull seized the instrument advising the thief that the bass was stolen and the guy fled empty handed. Bass has been reunited with the original owner. Brilliant, eh? I doubt you're going to get that sort or after service from Fender.

Bang on. That's perfect - slightly out of the ordinary and a nice local reference. There's a group of us on Facebook called the Bow Belles, as we all live in a street with 'Bow' in the name, we're all women and we're all musicians. Even though we're in four different bands.

I have read this thread from start to present end, and have no idea who this Gillespie character is. I thought at first it referred to dizzy of that ilk, but obviously not. Rock ain't dead, it's just no longer at the cutting edge of fashion, an industry which by its very nature needs to aways be finding something 'new'.

I have to disagree. Ten years ago I might have reluctantly grumbled and conceded he might have a point, but there's some really good young rock bands coming through at the moment. Grime and drill may be more en vogue at the moment, but the spirit of rock lives on and is constantly being revived by new generations.

I'd be more inclined to give this statement some credence had it not come from a bloke out of Primal Scream. Hardly an authority on music really.

I only use Cobalts on my P; my other basses have Elixirs of the same gauge (though I think the E string is 0.100). I can record something if you like, but think nice warm nickel rounds with a great ‘zing’ and top end. A set lasts me over a year.

That's exactly what I do with the cobalts!! Easier to dull down bright strings than try a bring a bit of life to really dull strings! I have the same philosophy with my DR high beam rounds! 😁

Let's see... there are plenty of soul / funk / jazz bands out there, so maybe a name that's a little closer to home would work? You could go for something that describes your local area, or references one of your main influences, perhaps? If I knew roughly where you are, I might come up with something witty (or dumb - hard to tell 'em apart sometimes, knowing me). It would be easy to come up with something silly like 'Funk U' but that's a tad cheesy and unoriginal. Why not tell us your main influences and your approximate area? That might give something more to go on. It might help with a logo too, if you're anywhere near a recognisable landmark. FWIW, we're having a similar problem. Our singist fancies D.A.R.E. (for Danceable Alternative Rock in Edinburgh) but I'm inclining towards this:

I must admit, if Rawk has matured as a musical form, I don't have a problem with that. Its been around a while after all! It might be fun standing in front of a massive speaker making BWARM BADERR noises and I don't see that going away while it's still fun..! Let's face it though, if your gran liked it, its probably not rebellious any more... At this point I'd insert a gif of that but from star trek beyond where stuff is blowing up because of having the beastie boys played at it and Bones turns to Spock turns and says 'is this classical music?' Having grown up listening to alternative and hard rock music through the 90s and early 00s I thought I was going to be a rock fan for life. However since becoming a bass player I've really fallen out of love with the genre as I struggle to get excited about Rock baselines (Geddy excluded) Now I'd now much rather listen to funk, soul or blues - rock has most definitely died for me.

For reasons related to geometry, the taper between the front and back depths of the two sides are not linear. Bloody typical! After all that b*****ks the intonation was fine anyway. The up side was that the method I devised worked really well. It meant that I was able to check it properly this time and if I ever actually have to do it I'll know how. It might come in handy for some of you other smoothies out there, so this is what I did. It's very simple, but it works well. Cut a narrow strip (about 2 mm) of tape and place it as squarely as poss across the neck on the octave as a reference. Instead of holding the string down with your finger, use something narrow and rigid, so that there's far less margin for error. Anything will do, but the Allen key for the truss rod was handy and I used that. Job done. Looks like I answered my own question in the end, but thanks again everyone for your input.

No, bigthumb, the problem there is that Dewalt were great when they first came to prominence. Big, powerful and made other duos like Black and Decker look a bit out of date. But then they got lazy and started churning out the same old stuff just to honour their contract. Now there's new kids on the block like Milwaukee and they make Dewalt look like stuff your Grandad used to enjoy. Power tools, rock music, it's all the same.... 🙄

And the back and sides set has arrived from Germany. Black Limba - beautifully presented and reasonable delivery by Schroter Edelholz. Not expensive either The outside faces are good enough to use directly, so just a case of bringing the thickness down from the supplied 3.5mm to the finish thickness which can all be done from the back faces (out of sight! ) Should be able to start that this weekend

it's a great feeling to gig again isn't it? I too retired in 1995, had my first gigs end of 2017. I'm enjoying gigging immensely this time around, and am playing for the pure love of it, originals with my bandmate throughout my career beside me again., and the kid brother of our other bandmate who is no longer with us, feels right

It was a whole tenner dearer than the SH, which I'd only have spent on chocolate raisins and vimto. I never had any drop-outs or latency problems with the SH and was happy with the sound of it, the only things I ever had a gripe with it were; The receiver unit being lighter than the average moth meant I had to wedge it under my amp handle to stop the 1/4" jack cable throwing it round all over the place. Yeah - I'm actually complaining it's too light! The power supply being the correct way round for everything but music use, (as some joker decided that the polarity had to be bass-ackwards on FX pedals) so it always needed it's own plug. What with no two wall-warts being the same way round or shape to fit in extension leads together, it took a fair bit of electrical tetris to run it with the setup I had, (SH, tuner pedal, drive pedal, DI box to PA/combo amp) the pedals were on their own 9v wart, the SH on one and the DI box on another (12v!!) transformer, and a plug for the combo all added up to taking forever to find an extension lead that they'd all fit in. The SH is also not what you'd call 'road ready'. I rather embarrassingly proved it, too! All of which is actually pretty minor and the simple thing to do is to stop moaning and use a great-performing lil unit. Certainly couldn't moan about the battery life on the Hound, the only annoyance on that front was the dead battery warning on mine was never any more than 30 seconds til it expired. The G75 base unit weighs about the same as a full pint in one of those old faceted glasses with a handle on. It's going nowhere, even with a bunch of cables in it, and it can have a lot - it works as a DI box with XLR out (with ground lift), 2 seperate 1/4" outputs and a dedicated tuner out, even with a built-in tuner. It even has a 1/4" aux input that I haven't used yet. So that's the DI box, tuner and 2 warts left in the case, leaving me with a signal chain of a G75 and a drive pedal. The screen counts down in hours and minutes the remaining battery life, and I got 43 minutes of use while deliberately ignoring the flashing dead battery lightshow. The fuel gauge starts at 8 hours on alkalines, and after 2 pairs used I've no reason to doubt it. It won't even switch on with NiMHs in, though. I've no intention of finding out, but I genuinely believe the transmitter would have a good chance of surviving a small car driving over it. She's got some gravity on her! It can take any 1/4" guitar lead, but the supplied one even screws in to the top of the unit. That leads me to the only fault with the whole show, the tranny clip! Seriously, it looks like some one cobbled one up from some bent fusewire. Stuck a fingertip under it to get it over a strap end and it pinged off into the corner of the room. Then straight back in the box. I'll have to invest in one of those holster thingies, but until then it can live in a pocket. I'm still a fan of the Smooth Hound, if I ever feel the need for a home-use-only wireless I'll probably get another one. You know that feeling of owning a perfectly capable 1.4 hatchback that'll serve you well? That's the Smooth Hound. The G75 is like being handed the keys to a dirty big V6 that someone else filled up. TLDR - try a G75.

I'd agree that the very worst communications I've had are from the lowest value items, the absolute nadir being when I offered two pretty good sofas for free, the only condition being they were picked up. The number of 'Will you deliver?' messages was in equal parts annoying and depressing. Other than one protracted conversation, the gist of which went: "I'll have those two sofas" "Fine, when do you want to pick them up?" "I haven't got any transport, you'll have to deliver them" "I'm sorry, they're pickup only. Like it says in the ad." "But I haven't got any transport" "Sorry" "But I really want them, i just haven't got any transport." "Well, you haven't got two free sofas then, either." That one was alllll annoying...
