I feel sorry for young people today. IME, job ads have been heading in this direction for the last twenty years or so. Tons of pious crap like "must be prepared to crawl over broken glass and barbed wire to deliver against key performance metrics; world-class team engagement skills 200% essential". IMO, bonkers job ads stem from the fashionable idea of superimposing inappropriately controlling and over-complicated management techniques on otherwise simple jobs. It's all of a one with the kind of buzzword bingo which suffuses meetings, 'mission statements' and corporate press releases. Hot drinks machines become 'beverage vending solutions'. Ratcatchers become 'rodent extermination executives'. It is not enough that a company simply does whatever it is they do; they must be 'passionate' about it. It's linguistic hyper-inflation. I am reminded of the Simpsons' episode where some Hollywood types are sat round a table discussing something and one of them is banging on in corporate speak and a colleague says something like: "So, basically, we're all randomly using big words so that other people think we're smart? (pause) I'm fired, aren't I?"8 points

Received this in a trade with Moosh on this here BC a few months back. Lovely US made P Bass. Seymour Duncan QP fitted but also comes with white pearl guard with original pickup. Initial scratched into the neck plate but I can give a replacement to the buyer. Lovely Aged cream nitro finish with some nice play wear starting to show. I'm using the original pictures from a previous seller (hope that's ok?) Splurged on a Super Bassman and 8x10 so makes sense to move this on.5 points

After many years away I finally have the time and a little spare income to return to playing bass ... I last played properly back at uni in 2007 although I dabbled a bit a few years ago. I really enjoyed playing rock/funk i.e. RHCP and Jamiroquai but before I stopped I was trying to teach myself jazz to improve my theory. I am really looking forward to getting back in to playing. Took a trip to the bass gallery today (amazing stock and helpful staff) to pick up a lightweight rig for home use and hopefully small gigs eventually and should be soon picking up the Sandberg KT that @neilmurraybass was selling on here as well. (my wife wanted to buy it for me as my version of her engagement ring and who am I to say no...) Have been loitering around the forums for a couple of weeks and a lot of gear seems to have changed since I stopped 12 years ago. Pic of new rig with a pic of new bass to follow. I have bought in the hope that this gear will not need changing in a long time but I do remember the perils of Gas! Catch you around the forums! Rich4 points

As part of my real job in events, I'm constantly working out ways to minimise kit, without compromising on quality. Ie same kit, but better packaged and less trips and space taken up in van. So, today, I've been chuffed to bits for my new custom flight case from the brilliantly helpful guys at swan flight cases. I needed a case to fit: 1.bass guitar. 2.amp (quilted 800). 3.helix stomp. 4.cables. I sent swan all the dimensions and I'm chuffed to bits with the results. I didn't have my bass or helix with me, but here's a photo of the bass case with the amp and a few cables in. So I now have everything I need (bar cab) in one case - bass, cables, speakon, amp, and in the helix everything I'd every need - di, tuner, amp modeled, volume, recording, and every type of pedal going. All in a lightweight package. Well worth doing if you have similar kit.4 points

What a great gig. Pete was singing (only played bass on one song) Laurence Archer on guitar and the Wild Horses drummer Tight, very good band with a great sound. Haven't seen Laurence play since he was in Grand Slam. Pete is looking a little frail these days but put on a good show. Tickets were a tenner and worth every penny4 points

Beautiful Ken Smith 5 string bass in the coveted BT or vintage shape. Exceptionally beautiful Ebony top. Year of construction 1995, the golden period at Ken Smith. The bass is exceptionally light for a Ken Smith with 4,4kg. The bass was loved and played a lot, so traces of use are visible, but overall it is in excellent condition for its age. The tuners were exchanged by the previous owner for the Gothoh Light-Tuners. Later Ken Smith used the same tuners as well. The originals are included. 5-piece body: Ebony Top, Mahagony Core and Walnut Back, each with one maple layer in between. 5-piece neck, 3 strips of maple with probably Morado or Pao-Ferro stripes. Fingerboard also probably Morado or Pao-Ferro, but I'm not sure about that. Neck with graphite rods, this is recognizable by the G in the serial number. Had several Smith basses, but this one has the most beautiful neck. Flatter than the one I was allowed to hold in my hands. There is a Smith Teardrop case. This case was bought by the previous owner from the bay due to the completion. But the case is in a good condition, has obviously seen a lot of the world. The condition of the case does not correspond to the condition of the bass. But ultra cool, vintage and hardcore managed. Antests possible near Ingolstadt. But beware: is addictive ... ;-)) No Trades. I need some Money, otherwise i would never sell this outstanding Bass. Shipping with DHL.4 points

I don’t really want to just type and diss, but honestly these two lines would make me run a mile for a plethora of reasons. Collaborate and stay on the same page with the CEO at all times. Filters and translates the CEO’s ideas into functional plans for the company.4 points

Use this 'setback' to further build upon your relationship by demonstrating a wish to share your partner's interests. For example: Beauticians are sharply divided about the merits of nail buffing e.g. "You risk wearing away the surface of your nails, making nails thinner and thinner, more and more weak. Extensive buffing causes heat as well which makes the nail surface brittle and prone to chipping. "If you have healthy, moisturised nails, they’ll have a pretty natural shine without mechanical buffing". Explain to your spouse that you were thinking only in her best interests by rendering her nail buffer inoperable and that it is your intention to purchase some nail moisturiser for her. Better still, book her an appointment at a local nail bar and bank the brownie points against your next incoming bass.3 points

Is it just the one person they are looking for because if it is, looking at the job description, they better be getting a damm good wage for what is expected of them.3 points

I still find it strange that people want to have their photo taken with me/the band, or want us to sign merch they’ve bought. We’re 3 grumpy middle aged blokes with faces like gorillas derrières, and we all have real jobs so although I’m now used to it happening I’m still not sure as to why.3 points

Watch the Chernobyl TV mini-series. If you are 40 or over, you will probably recall seeing the news when you were young. You will want to see this series. It is very, very good. Moving and true to the events that shook the day and following years.3 points

When merton posted a pic of his shiny LB 30 last year I just had to get one, I took it to Dave green at Ashdown who built it to check it over for me , they do sound nice 🙂3 points

Happened to some extent in Germany recently - but we were the main band at a festival in a small town, and the audience were mostly equally distinctive - long hair and tie dye shirts. Often bumped into people while walking around town who told me they had enjoyed the previous night's set. The best part was seeing people I didn't know wearing Grateful Dudes T shirts - we sold about £450 worth of them over the three days of the festival.3 points

Nice! Swan are great, they did me a Back to the Future themed case for my flying V:3 points

The cheap alternative to the Fret Rubbers mentioned by @Grangur above is a Ladies 3-way nail buffing block. One surface is a very fine abrasive, the second is for buffing the nails and the last is a sort of soft rubber for shining. They're good for getting out the really baked-on corrosion or for getting tiny scratches out of the frets after dressing. Sainsburys do these for a couple of quid but I nicked mine from the wife.3 points

An immaculate Translucent Gold (?? correct me if I'm wrong) 2007 Stingray up for sale...and this one really stings as it's a real cracker. I'm selling it as it's too nice!! Plays beautifully and sounds awesome. Bough this off Sammybass on here a few months ago (very nice lad) and after gigging it three times I'm just too scared of marking it and spoiling it. My band mates love it and they aren't going to be impressed that it's going! I though about keeping it as a case queen but it seems stupid to not let someone else enjoy it. I have an older 2 eq stingray that I'm going to gig instead. Selling for exactly what I paid for it in the spirit of the BC community and will be very sad to see it go. Well after spectacularly failing my gear abstinence challenge (well I managed 5 months), I went strong and wrong: Serek Midwestern - Amazingly fun shortscale, seriously, one of the most fun basses I’ve ever played, sounds amazing, incredibly comfortable, and top-level build quality : Elrick Expat Evolution 5 - Yes it’s one of the ‘cheaper’ standard models, but it really is boutique, incredible 5 string with all the quality US spec appointments, but without the frills, super solid bass: It’s been a mildly tough start to the year personally, and so I thought I’d treat myself. I’ve wanted builds from both brands for a while, and so with my Lakland basses, I’ve now completed my ‘Chicago Triumvirate’ (Lakland, Serek and Elrick are all built....granted the Expats are Czech built, but finished etc in the Windy City). Well that's it. We may as well all give up, lads and ladies. Bloke on Radio 2 has just announced that the Spice Girls are the best British band of all time. We can't compete with that.2 points

Just a quick update to say that the fabulous Mr project_c was kind enough to send me the above mentioned tapewounds and I've put them onto my 1982 last-of-the-Fullertons Precision. They sound incredible - I really like flats but these just sound.... thunderous. They're rich, smooth and rounded - a proper old school thump. And i love the feel compared to regular flats - next thing will be to try them at rehearsal and see how they feel after a couple of hours playing in a hot rehearsal room. Thank you, project_c, for letting me try these out. I really hope you didn't want them back 😀2 points

Even the most well intentioned KPIs have unintended consequences, my profession has suffered the consequences of them since 1992. I frequently take comfort from the quote "We trained hard . . . but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization."2 points

When reading job ads I enjoy speculating as to how the employer came up with the list of 'character requirements'. When an ad emphasises a need for 'honesty' 'directness' and an unwillingness to 'play the blame game' I wonder about the previous incumbent and whether this weighed upon the recruiter's mind. "So what kind of person do we need?" "Well, no one like Bob, that's for sure. Got up everyone's nose, his team hated him. Totally clueless about the industry" "Stole the cash from the coffee fund. Boffed his PA. Got drunk and slagged us all off at the Trade Show, totalled his car and said someone had stolen it" "So: open, direct, a great mentor, a passion for values alignment..." "Values alignment? What does that mean?" "Dunno, but it sounds good".2 points

As promised, here are some details on fitting the cab out. We've already gone through the assembly process, but just before you glue the top panel in, don't forget to paint behind the port with some matt black paint. Then drill the holes for the crossover. It's much easier to do with the top off. You could also screw the crossover in now, but it fits through the horn opening - so you could do that later if you like.2 points

Not quite at that level... But this poster I created for a gig I played in 1984 is now part of the Victoria & Albert Museum's permanent collection. Also in Sound On Sound Magazine in the early 2000s there was an interview with Steve Levine in including photos of his home studio where the CD from the band I was in at the time was visible amongst a pile of stuff on his desk.2 points

I agree with post #2. Despite the large number of words, it seems very short on the actual detail of what you'll be doing day-to-day. For example, "must be comfortable with solving problems in a practical and healthy manner". I am trying to think of an example of someone who is comfortable solving problems in an unhealthy and impractical way. My dog can tick off half of the skills listed on the advert.2 points

When I depped with a band at Christmas, on the way out of the back door of the Underworld a fan stopped and asked the whole band to sign two posters for him. I stood to one side, assuming that he wouldn't be after my autograph, but he was very keen to include me, more so when it was pointed out that i was only helping them out and this would be the last of only two gigs that I'd be playing. They've got to be the most collectable rarities for fans of the band...although, the posters are slightly less collectable than the pizza box with the set list on it that the soundman at the previous night's gig in Manchester had asked us all to sign for him The band played the Garage a couple of months ago, and I met the lead guitarist for a few beers ahead of the show, and he got stopped by some fans on the next table. He's always happy to chat, and as the conversation goes on and the fan says that he always tries to come and see the band when they play in London, he asks them whether they recognise me? "Er...yes, maybe, aren't you in [insert name of obscure death metal band here]?" No Fame, so fleeting2 points

Beneath the Ashdown, would that happen to be a HH V-S 100w bass amp? I've got the PA version at home - MA100 Nice bit of retro kit! I love the faux-neon glowy bit!2 points

I have had that many times - although split the saving? Its not him doing anything wrong, why does he need a cut! But I think its wrong, you are using their service for something you would only get by being there, and also you could be kicked out of your account. Its people doing that that makes eBay so tricky to use, with all the restrictions.2 points

A young guy asked me if I did bass lessons. I wasn't sure if he was asking whether I gave lessons or wanted to take some... heh! heh!2 points

I used to be in a reasonably well known local band about 30 years ago, so sometimes people of a certain age (usually about 5 years younger than me) might vaguely recognise me or realise that they used to watch the band I was in once they start to get to talk to me for a while. More recently, I played at a blues festival in the Orkney Islands about 8 years ago, which involved us playing a tiny gig on one of the smaller islands and getting a ferry back to the ‘mainland’ (i.e. the biggest island) first thing in the morning. Half way through the crossing we could suddenly hear the band’s music blaring out on the ferry PA. It turns out that the guy sailing the ferry had been at the gig the night before and had looked up the website to find some of our music. We were invited up onto the bridge to watch him dock the ferry, which is not something you get every day.2 points

Haha, well hopefully not, its hopefully kind of the opposite - reduced trips to and from car loading up and packing down, so everything should be with me all the time. Either in house, in car, in venue, then car, then house. No leaving doors open doing a few trips etc or stuff getting mixed up on stage or in a pack down.2 points

I still remember Victoria Beckham on TFI Friday back in the 90s, without a hint of irony, describing herself as a singer songwriter. Nobody in the audience laughed.2 points
