  4. A possible purchase has got me considering selling one of my Spectors..... aaarrghhh.... So, here is a beautiful translucent dark cherry Euro 4 LX with active EMG PJ set up, non-trim Tonepump preamp, gold hardware, rosewood board and all the lush curves/ergonomic comfort and authoritative punchy tone that Spectors are well known for! Condition is a solid 9+ with just two small surface lacquer dings - one below the bridge and one on the top edge (both can be seen in the close-up pic below) - and the original owner had temporarily moved the rear strap pin to directly below the bridge so a small hole is left. A new one of these would cost you £1600 minimum, if you can find this colour. I'm looking for just £1100 o.n.o. cash, bank transfer or Paypal (buyer pays all fees). Bass can be collected from Guildford/Woking, Surrey area or I can courier (with full insurance) for approx £45. I am also open to meeting/delivering for fuel costs within 50 miles of Guildford/Woking area.   5. After cleaning a few decades of crud off them, I installed the pickups. Certainly some mojo with that string rub! Then the transfer of the main circuits followed be a tap test to make sure it was still all working: Then remember the template I took before veneering? Well - as it happens, that was only useful for finding the bridge earth hole - the bridge off the donor is a different type...a 5 screw one: So, once the neck and the machine heads are on, I'll recheck the position of the bridge and install from fresh. But knowing where the bridge earth hole is important - and, trust me, you would never find it without the paper template! Nowadays, I solder the earth wire to a piece of sticky-backed copper tape for good electrical contact: So, all being well, neck, tuners and bridge will be fitted tomorrow

  9. Going to Glastonbury in the early--mid 90s was one the highlights of my late teens/early 20s. I loved pretty much every second apart from the inevitable points where I had to take a seat in the latrines. Even that was useful life experience. Whenever someone warns me about 'the state of the gents' in a pub or on a train I can go in confidently knowing that I've almost certainly seen and dealt with worse.

  12. It’s why I love the Rebellion Festival - 200+ punk/Oi bands over 4 days, INDOORS! All stages have decent loos and the drinks/food in there whilst not cheap is ok, and being smack in the middle of Blackpool town centre all your regular fast-food establishments are within easy walking distance. And they say us punks/skins are the stoopid ones!

  13. Hoppus body, scratchplate and neckplate that has been loaded with an EMG pickup. Aftermarket P neck with brass nut. Neck feels like a Flea bass neck. Not narrow at the nut but shallow profile. Body has been refinished and reliced by a previous owner. Cool bass but not needed any more.

I think I bought It back in 2011 from Bass Direct, it has a few scars on it, 2 major ones are some wear by the neck pickup and a dent by the volume pot [both pictured] Comes with original gigbag I am based in Bristol and am happy to drive to meet depending on the distance, also happy to get it couriered at the expense of the buyer.   15. Custom 4 string Jazz Bass with a 90's Japanese body professionally refinished in Aztec Gold, a beautiful one off Funk machine. A gorgeous Bass that only sits at home now but this deserves to be played. All Parts Neck with Binding, MOP inlays and Walnut facing (£400). There is a slight smudge in the varnish to the right of Fender decal, only noticeable close up. A few light buckle marks on the back as seen in pic. Small paint chip at heel of neck next to truss rod adjustment. Babicz Full Contact Bridge fitted. Will ship in Spider hardcase and boxed for courier. Shipping to mainland UK included in price.

  16. Beautiful series 1 single cut, built for me so single owner and in immaculate condition. Specs as follows: 33 scale 18mm spacing at the bridge What I would describe as a shallow C profile - somewhere between and C and flat D Through neck Bartolini P4s Ash body, maple neck with purpleheart Walnut top, walnut back and control covers, walnut facings on front and rear of headstock (it is truly a work of art) Black hardware. Hipshot tuners, hipshot piezo bridge. East unipre. Controls are: Vol and balance on stack 1 Mid freq and mid cut/boost stack 2 Bass/Treble on stack 3 (pull for bright boost) Passive tone (pull for passive) Piezo vol, pull for mid-dark boost Each P4 has a three way coil tap for series, single coil and parallel Final switch is for the neck LEDs, off/side/front and side Set up by Martin last year and strung with Elixirs I have to say, it's a fabulous bass. It is a joy to behold and tremendous playability. The sale is reluctant as I have a strong degree of personal investment in the bass (not just the obvious financial) however I mainly play other basses and following some soul searching I think the time is right to move it on, I hope to a new and happy home. I'm happy to sell but frankly just as interested in trades. If the latter, or PX, then the following might be helpful: Only basses please - I'm sorted for amps and other stuff I'm sorted for Fender type basses so no Ps or Js please No 33s please, and would definitely prefer 18mm spacing but 19 is cool if the bass is comfy...   17. Turned my attention to sorting the electrics. I decided to remove the copper film and re-do the cavity with conductive paint. First I stripped the cavity back to bare wood then used masking tape to cover the side walls where the cover will go With plenty of masking tape around the body to prevent any little splashes, I painted a couple of coats in the cavity: I have also been looking at the original cover I made. I found some veneer that I think is a much better match. The old cover: The veneer for the new: And the two pieces side by side for contrast. I've also glued a couple of blocks together from which to make some wooden knobs. Not sure which will look better so will plan on making two sets to see: And finally, I've started getting the actual wiring sorted. I'm following the same layout I used in the previous bass as that seemed to work well:

  20. Festivals - bit of a lottery. The best ones i went too were the free ones. Watchfield , Windsor , but even the one pay festival i went too, Knebworth, was a hoot. A less famous free one i attended compared to the above, was a MAG festival. For those that dont know who MAG is, they're the Motorcycle Action Group. If you didnt know, you'd expect there to be appalling condition, bikers batting the shyte out of each other, riding their bikes over tents etc. Not so. The place was spotless, no litter to speak of, and any small amounts were cleared up, the toilets were the cleanest of any festival id been to, and didnt reek. I never saw one fight, and everyone was as pleasant as hell.

  21. Well I'm a serial festival attender and have been since Monsters of Rock 85. I've done loads, V Festival, Reading, Monsters of Rock/Download, Latitude, T in the Park, IOW, Bestival as big ones. I love them. They're not all muddy, they're not all frequented by yobbish lager louts, thieves, drug dealers, and people with no interest in music. The sounds systems have got better and better and the quality of the bands has improved too. I did IOW this year and it wasn't muddy, the weather was kind, the people were great and some of the young new bands around restore your faith in 'proper' music. I saw no trouble, no aggro, everyone just enjoying themselves and the music. The key thing is to go prepared (camping gear, clothing etc) for the weather, for the accommodation, for the type of music and that actually it can be quite tiring. Don't write them off, then can be a lot of fun.

  22. Tell you what though there was plenty for bass geeks to get their teeth into at Download. I've never been particularly a fan of Dream Theater but they were damn good. John Myung's flying fingers were summat else. Didn't know much about Tool but I particularly liked Justin Chancellor's playing too. Lovely tone. Some nice work from the guy in Godsmack and a new find in the fella from Toska. A good find they were.

  23. What about the Aerodyne Jazz bass? Obviously it has a jazz bass body shape but it has a Precision split coil in the right position and it has a jazz neck profile, at least the one I had about 10-12 years ago did. Great lightweight basses although the bound edge on the body will eventually erode your forearm down to the bone.

I've been to Glastonbury (too big, corporate and impersonal), 'progressed' to Latitude (got too 'Hampstead on the Suffolk Coast' and chav-heavy) and have finally ended up attending Green Man for the last 4 years or so. GM is without doubt the best of the bunch but, being located at the foot of the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons there's more or less a 100% chance it will rain at some point over the weekend. We mitigate by simply making sure we take some proper water-proof clothing and a suitable wide-brimmed hat. Mind you, there's not much you can do about the car parks being mud baths when you want to leave! That said, I've seen some absolutely blasting bands and the beer's not too p**s-takingly expensive either. Oh, and a Beer Festival forms part of the whole shebang too.

  29. I still think the tort guard on the op's Jazz is the way to go. That said, I do like White Pearl and have swapped out the originals on a few of my instruments as shown below..... Fender USA Jazz (Aquamarine - originallly with plain white pickguard) MM Stingray5 (originallly with plain white pickguard) Fender USA Strat (originally had a plain white guard and all white fittings (controls, pup covers, etc). Yamaha Pacifica 604 (white pearl already installed as standard) I've also installed a white pearl guard to my cream-coloured Fender Telecaster but not taken any pics yet. And finally........ just to show I do also like tort pickguards...... Here's my fretless Stingray

  30. The neck is drying after its penultimate light-slurry-and-buff. In the meantime, I have copper shielded the control chamber ahead of transferring the electronics: The electronics and cover are planned to come from the donor body. And there was a little surprise waiting: Pity in a way because this one has the SGC Nanyo stuff on it but, I have a number of wood plates in my bag of bits that I can thickness and cut to shape. I'll consult with Mick what wood he wants - including maybe this nice piece of (I think) cocobolo that would explode with colour depth once it was sanded and buffed up:

  31. The only really big one I've ever done is Womad (about 8 times now), and I think it's fab. I have without doubt heard some of the best music of my life there. OK, it's all jolly middle class etc, but it's very family friend and mostly tosser free. Toilets are pretty damn good, it's very well organised and the prices are fairly reasonable IMO. I imagine going to a rawk/indie type festival full of boozed up teens/twenty somethings would be an entirely different kettle of kippers however...

  33. Some audiences just see the band as a jukebox or backng music for an event or night out. Its a difficult one and can dent your enthusiasm when playing if you get little or no response. Always plan to play after they are all sozzled. Job Done. Dave

  34. 13 -I think- runs at Dynamo Open Air starting when I was 14. The bands, the fans, rain & shine, sex drugs and rock ' roll, the comradery, pranks and shenanigans with complete strangers, leaky tent and a foot deep stinky mud to sweltering heat and everyone with their top off. If you don't like a party, stay at home.

  42. My favourite bass player of them all is Rinat Ibragimov. Some wonderful youtube videos of him playing - mostly the more Romantic repertoire. He had a major stroke a few years ago, which tragically left him unable to perform, but his sound and emotional connection with music are endless inspiration to me The Koussevitsky was one of the pieces in my ARCM recital many many years ago, I had a couple of lessons with him before the recital. Eye-opening.......

  47. Yep, definitely stick with the white. Congrats on the bass by the way. They do tend to deliver well above expectations. Without wishing to cause John to blush, the fitted Kiogon loom is a great upgrade on these (I have the same on mine). Enjoy!
