  2. For regrettable sale is my Bravewood ‘58 Precision Bass commissioned by myself in 2015 and made by John Elliott between July 2015 and May 2016. I’d owned and played quite a few Fender basses over the years and got to understand what I liked and didn’t like about each of them. I’d gassed for a custom bass for a few years and in 2015 I finally had the money together to start making enquiries. I specified a 40mm neck, rolled fingerboard, lightweight body, and with deep body contours/chamfers. John had me take a few of my basses down to his workshop near Redruth so he could see what I liked about them, before starting work. It exceeded my expectations and it really is a beautiful bass to look and and hold. The pictures do not do it justice, the colour especially is much more rich and Blonde in the flesh. Since I had it it’s only been gigged twice at private events where I could trust it wouldn’t be nicked or damaged, one or two rehearsals, and played at home on occasion. It looks the same as the day I picked it up. My reason for selling is I’m barely playing bass anymore, sadly. I haven’t gigged in 2 years and some recent financial issues mean I can’t justify having a bass of this value sat around not being played, not just because of my own financial situation, but the fact this is a bass that deserves to be played! Swamp Ash body in vintage transparent Blonde nitro with reliced and checked finish. Maple neck with 40mm nut width. F logo on headstock. Vintage-correct hardware all round. Wizard vintage-spec pick up and Hiscox hardcase. And at 7.9lbs John reckoned it was the lightest Precision he’d ever made. John replaced the pickup with another brand-new Wizard in November 2016 after the original one mysteriously died, and due to inevitable neck-dive because of the light weight, I fitted some Gotoh GBR640 tuners which I reliced to match the original Gotoh’s John fitted. I didn’t have a clue how to price this, as Bravewood’s don’t come up very often, therefore I’ve listed it at 1500 *now 1400* which is what I originally paid . I’m happy for someone to tell me if this is too steep, but I think it is worth it as it’s hardly been used and is a wonderful instrument. I played it for the first time in months the other day, the set up is still very good but I cannot remember what strings are on it, although they are roundwounds with silver ball ends and still have a lot of life left. I will not post this, I am happy to meet any prospective buyer at my home address in Cornwall or I can travel within a reasonable distance to meet you, but I want to make sure the new buyer is completely happy as this is not an off-the-shelf bass, but a completely custom-made instrument. John put pictures of the bass on his website and you can see it here http://www.bravewoodguitars.co.uk/page21.html I will also include the whole email conversation between me and John to show how and when it was commissioned. The pictures I’ve posted are what John sent me once it was completed, plus a cheeky couple of it at home the other day. You can get a better sense of the true colour in these pics which is why I took them. Any Q’s please ask! Will

  3. I had a minor fiddle with my red Firedragon, did a fret job, made a nut out of black perspex, I wanted black and it has a zero fret so I hope the perspex will make no difference, I put a set of strings on it and adjusted the neck and bridge to being very close, the intonation needs doing but it's not far off as is. I put some strap locks on it and gave it a whirl. Absolutely no hint of neck dive and it's feels so light. I'm pleased with how it plays already, I was a little worried about the neck angle and how that would affect playability but it feels great to me. The angle is 4.5 degrees if you remember which means a high bridge, I had initially though I'd need a thumb rest with it but my arm/hand is supported nicely by the body That's about it now with this one until the others are ready to work on again

  6. I won't criticize people who choose to boycott Amazon, even though I use them for most things I'm looking for. Their working practices are not the most ethical but the tax situation could be sorted by the government if they really were concerned about it. As for the working conditions of people directly employed by Amazon I would suggest that in the UK and across the EU there are laws to protect workers against exploitation so, again, the governments need to step up their game. Why single out Amazon? I can't defend them, but if you are really concerned about workers conditions then don't buy anything from China or some other far eastern countries. If you own anything from Nike or Apple, check out the reports on the internet about how their workers are treated. Do you know what conditions are like in the factory where your bass guitar was made? Many "name" guitar brands are made in the far east; China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia and South Korea. They are made there because of cheap labour and Cort guitars have not exactly covered themselves in glory concerning their treatment of workers in the past. I have no reason to believe that Cort are any worse than other manufacturers. I think things have improved somewhat but my own bass was made in South Korea by Mirr Music and I have no idea what conditions are like there. Taking a pop at Amazon is easy, but if you buy the same product from another dealer, it still will have been made in the same factory and under the same conditions as a one bought from Amazon. Business is designed to make money and profit is king the world over. Workers have always had to fight for better conditions which is why unions started. Fight on and make your stand but it is easy to be selective and take the easy option of hitting the obvious target.

  7. I'm booked to do this show. It'll be very well attended. Also they've got their review channel up and running "Bass Guitar Review" http://bassguitarreview.co.uk/ their first review is linked below. They'll be doing one of my basses next week (Retrovibe Vantage Tony Butler Signature) *SHAMELESS PLUG* It can only be a good thing this show. We tend to see the same faces year on year and the bass guitar show in London. So to get to another major bass only show in another part of the country is exciting. Look forward to seeing you at both events!

  8. This thread certainly makes for disappointing reading. It is a shame to see so many BC'ers giving advice to suggest that the OP renege on the bid or simply make a fraudulent claim to force a refund. Buyer's remorse is unpleasant, but it is surely better than being a waster who backs out of a deal of their own making. I wonder, if the OP really didn't want the bass, why he felt compelled to place a bid? It is not really a huge amount of money by any standard.

  9. Oh wow! It's no consolation, but it is VERY rare for that to happen just with tensioning up. On the positive side, that is a very clean break. If you want to post the neck to me, more than happy to see if I can fix it...

  14. Principality Shocked As Greatest Ever Welsh Poet Blasts Pop Star Richter Von Rickenbacher In Kids TV Sci-Fi Spat By Fox News Wales Reporter Tudor Fordor The late Dylan Thomas spells it out Le tout Wales reeled today as previously dead poet Dylan Thomas rose from the grave to denounce pop musician and respected international cheese commentator Mr Richter 'Ricky' Von Rickenbacher as a purveyor of codswallop. Said Mr Thomas: 'There I was having a fag and enjoying eternity when someone came round to my house and said "That Ricky, he reckons the whole Gerry Anderson TV show thing was nothing to do with him". Well, I'm here to tell Ricky Von Rickenbacher I don't know if it was him or if it wasn't. But it's codswallop. Or it isn't. I don't care actually. Mr Thomas added: 'Christ, this 21st century is a bit unpleasant. I need a drink. I need several drinks'. A spokesman for Mr Von Rickenbacher said that his client entirely refuted any suggestion that he was responsible for the puppet-related thread derail. The spokesman added: 'It's not the sort of thing he does'. Next story: 90 Year-old Nun in Mercy Dash To Palace

  15. I think that a Gibson Grabber would be popular. Far more versatile than the SG bass currently on the market (and I own an EB3 Also, a official licensed Korean/Japan made budget Rickenbacker 4001. Not going to happen though! A Trace Elliot GP12 SMX preamp with a class D power section would see a proper return to Trace Elliot’s roots, rather than a Peavey mini amp painted green.

  17. Reduced to £155.00, if it doesn't go at this price I am keeping it! Hi All, I bought this off this very forum and it is a surprisingly versatile fretless, great tone for something that is effectively an entry level fretless. It is light, well balanced and easy to play. Flatwounds fitted as you would expect.

  23. Like so many others here before, I could tell you which strings I like and use. But I suggest you to try very different gauges. If that 30-90 is your thing (or twang), go for it. It may be some strange combination of super light top and very heavy bottom or whatever. You may want to try special tunings. Do not take our word, go your own way. It is just trial and error for some time but it sure gets you there, where you want to be.

  25. Our guitarist is heavily into Rickenbackers and I'd always joked that the only Ric bass I'd own was a 4005, seeing as a decent one goes for between 7 and 9 grand I wasn't ever going to buy one. Then a custom built copy popped up on FB when I had a quick look before going into work, it looked lovely but it was 300 miles away and the best part of a grand, I'd never played one and I couldn't try this one. By lunchtime I'd agreed to buy it 😁

  26. As far as I'm concerned that article is a myth. My first amp was a '65 Fender Bassman that I bought new. In the US everyone who could afford them played Fender, everyone turned on both the power and the standby switches at the same time after setting up, and everyone used the standby switch for beer, or other substances, breaks. I also never heard a pop from using the switch, or saw a driver or power supply cap damaged as a result. Quoted from a '60s Fender Concert Amp manual: Standby Switch: This switch turns the amplifier on and off. In the Standby position the amplifier is off; however, the tube filaments are left on as to eliminate warm up time, provided that the main Power Switch is on. Use of this feature during short breaks versus using the Power Switch will increase tube life.

  29. While we all abhor the cunning corporate tactics of paying sweet FA tax on profits, this is a fault of the Govt. tax loopholes. They could shut these loopholes down in the blink of an eyeball, but they wont. Not even the local self employed plumber, electrician, builder etc , pays more tax than they have to. Everyone bar none, pays the minimum that HMRC requires. The big monster corporate money making machines are merely paying the legal amount, and least amount that they can get away with. Like every other business.

  30. Either a balanced jack to xlr cable, or adaptor into xlr to xlr works fine. Personally I just take an adaptor in my bag as all venues, sound guys etc have xlrs to xls.
    2 points
  31. You don't need an adapter, just a trs to xlr cable which is pretty common (although generally you could go straight in anyway). Not sure what you mean about the liver. If you want more slots and have more space, get the LT, otherwise the HX stomp is fine.

  35. I'm using a Bass VI exclusively for one of the bands I play with. I have a Squier Bass VI and a Burns Barracuda. TBH I don't like the Squier very much as I find the string spacing on the neck far too narrow. Whoever thought it was good a idea to take a neck that is already narrow by electric guitar standards and fit even chunkier string to it was obviously not thinking straight - even my 6 string electric guitars have a wider neck than the Squier Bass VI. I started a whole thread about my quest for a more suitable Bass VI for my needs here where most of the alternatives have been discussed. And having said that the Squier's string spacing at the nut is too narrow, the Burns has better neck string spacing, but is less good at the bridge (compared with the Squier). IMO the problem with most of the these instruments is that they are essentially guitars with long necks shoe-horned on to give a 30" scale length. Out of all the Bass VIs I've tried the Burns Barracuda is the one that places the least number of restrictions upon my playing style, but everyone is different so you really need to try each bass and make up your own mind. Personally having played both, I'd pick the Revelation over the Squier, they are fairly similar, but the Relation has more usable tonal variations and slightly more space between the strings which makes it (for me) a bit easier to play. All of these budget Bass VIs come with strings that are really too light for the average bass player. It is less noticeable on the Burns because it has a different style bridge, but all will benefit from changing the strings to either LaBellas (flat or round wound), or Newtone Axion Bass VI Round wound stings ( my personal choice).

  36. Yup, just like that, tho with a lighter, much browner board. I've some wood dye I was thinking of darkening it with, but it may do as it is. The VW was the main deal, as it's gonna be a one-gig bass, for a 30-year reunion of an originals band I was (and now am again) in. I had a VW 3000A back then, and this is close enough. The Boardwalk, Manchester, 1989...I had a better back, back then... 😀

  37. That's an S. D. Curlee. It's probably (as they're more common) a licensed Hondo (probably Korean) version, but could be a US original, as they were aesthetically very close. I don't know them well enough to tell off the top of my head. Either way, very cool and rare as hen's teeth!

  40. I played a gig last night. Yes, I'll give you a few moments to compose yourselves...I do actually gig Bit of a special occasion - an old friend of mine from university days reformed our old band for his 50th birthday party. I'd lost touch with him until about 2 years ago and I'd not seen the other guys at all for about 30 years. No one could locate the drummer so the birthday boy's brother was sitting in. We did two practices with drum machine tracks over the last year or so as the drummer's been away...drumming. So Saturday afternoon's rehearsal was the first time we'd all played together properly, which went very well...thankfully ! As did the gig, absolute blinder, everyone played fantastically, the crowd loved it (and I got to play through my big rig, which hasn't ever actually been gigged so far...it sounded awesome) I loved every second of it, especially playing with a really good drummer, which I've not done in far too long. He was very complimentary about my playing, which was very sweet of him...it's not often I get told by a Mercury Prize-nominated jazz drummer that I'm doing the right thing

  45. I don't understand why you put a bid in if you didn't want to buy it. You saw the reserve wasn't met, thought you'd be "safe" with a low bid and ended up winning. What were you trying to achieve? Time to man up and pay the bill, if you don't like it then just sell it. The other members here advocating people pulling out of paying to get of having to buy the thing is a bit sad to see. Dreamers and fantasy buyers who can't or dont actually come up with the money are a total pain, the seller shouldn't have to have their time wasted.

  46. Buy it. Take out all the electronics and replace them with expensive ones. Have it defretted. Then realise the true meaning of "don't need" and "can't play" with the added sting of it no longer being a bargain. That's what I would do!
