Finally picked up my new Cobia from Alpher HQ today a 4 string to go with my 5er. It's bloody lovely and sounds amazing with the Nordstrand Big Man pickup, just passive this time but with a 3 way toggle for single coil, series and parallel, I have to say its spot on and only weighs 7lb 2oz (most of that will be the pickup!) Hipshot hardware all round makes Jeff a very happy bunny!7 points

For about the last six months the new band have been embarking on recording sessions; it's been as weird and experimental as previously...four or five hours a week at times, I'd go in and just record bits, 4 bars of something, another 4 in a different time signature and repeat. Wholly at the behest of the producer/guitarist, no idea what the end product will sound like, I'd wait for him to produce something. A few days later he'd circulate MP3s. So here we are. Jonestown. Link below. I don't actually know who I'm channelling; there's some Geddy in there, for sure. A bit of Stuart Hill. A bit of Le Tigre, NIN. Vocals have been an issue as the singer is flying globally with the new job, so difficult to tie him down. Ahead of whatever qualifies as a release we've circulated this track to radio, BBC Introducing and various music press people. Our singer got this back from a music journalist he sent it to: So anyway, this is where we start:6 points

It is painful whenever altruism is repaid with carelesness. But being kind and sharing is always a good thing, for you and for others. I hope this incident doesn't change that side of your nature.5 points

Update !!! Spent the last few days since receiving the bass working out a viable solution to fix the neck/body joint break. Pretty much had to remake the neck heel by cutting the broken part and adding a tenon, then mortising the body to mate the two. Glued and clamped it up and let cure for 2 days. This is the result. Still need to finish the repaired area and tweak the action and intonation. Electronics work fine. Tuned it to pitch and all seems well. And that "R" has got to go. possible harp tailpiece replacement and a correct bass bridge from Winfield.4 points

There's a good way round this, if anyone asks me to borrow my rig I just hand them a 9 quid DI box and watch the confusion. Sometimes if they've managed to irk me in some other way I 'forget' to put the battery in. Ain't I a stinker?4 points

The best way to look at it is it's even more arsey not to bring any gear and expect to borrow someone else's.4 points

Music Man Stingray 30th Anniversary Up for sale is a great Stingray. It's a 30th anniversary model from 2006. Apparently these are scarce, as only 783 were produced. The body is made of mahogany, which is unusual for a Music Man. The neck is made of a high grade figured maple. Stunning! The body and neck are completely finished in a transparent crimson red. Picture time: Its a great, open sounding Ray. I've had a few and played a bunch, and this is definitely one of the best sounding I've encountered. It even sounds great with dead strings! The Ray is in good shape. It has its user marks, but nothing serious. It's mostly surface scratching and a dent at the bottom. The original tolex hardcase is included. The bass is now fitted with fresh DR fat beams. Asking €1.550 (which is around £1395 nowadays) The bass is located in the Netherlands, but could be shipped fully insured within europe/UK. Reasonable cash offers and partial trades are considered. No 1-1 trades, unless you have a vintage mustang bass to offer.3 points

My apologies for the typo in my post above. My friend and former business associate Mr Arian (redacted) is neither moustachioed nor possessed of a cleft palate. It is simply the case that those who hail from his particular mountain village of Kukësa exhibit a localised genetic abnormality which causes excessive hair growth on the lower lip. Not below the lip, like an inverted moustache or a goatee beard, but actually upon the lip. Hence, poor Arian has a hairy lip - which is what my original post should have made clear and to which end I have corrected my error. Mr (redacted) is sensitive about this abnormality in part because neighbouring villages have traditionally cast scorn upon 'the Kukësa lip' and oft-times joke about Kukësaians fellating the mountain Ibex indigenous to that part of Albania. To this day Arian feels the whiplash of shame and is not unnaturally prey to sudden outbreaks of extreme violence should he feel he is in any way being disrespected. In drawing @lozkerr's attention to Arian's chief visual characteristic I was animadverting her to the potentially catastrophic outcome of even appearing to notice his lip-beard. The last chap to do so ended up with a K-Bar knife in his eye.3 points

I detect the hand of a seasoned professional in these proposed arrangements. Although I'm now retired please don't hesitate to send me your details so I can pass them on to an Albanian of my acquaintance who's got something lined up. Arian's a lovely chap but try not to stare at his hair hairy lip. He's a bit touchy about it.3 points

Great minds think alike... I was planning to source a big tour bus from the fleet parked outside Edinburgh Castle. Plenty of seats, full air-con and tinted windows, so you can get tooled up without worrying about being seen. Foreign plates too, so no risk of being detected by ANPR. And they burn well.3 points

I know one doesn't like to appear mean, but lending gear is a no-no for me. If I'm there and someone wants to play through my kit, I'll say yes if they ask nicely (and preferably buy me a pint), but that's it. I never let anything out of my sight. Too much of my hard earned at stake and people aren't always careful with others' stuff.3 points

1989 Fretless Warwick 4 String Thumb NT Bass This is a feeler as this bass looks great next to my ’88 fretted, photographing it now and checking it out makes me realise why I bought it in the first place, but no Jack am I. I also shelved my dream of owning a ‘6 Pack’ of Warwick NT Thumbs. I bought this bass to compliment my Fretted ’88 which I have owned since new, it did and it does. I have never gigged this bass, hardly ever noodled it (I don’t know why either, another ‘Vanity Project’ I guess). It is in immaculate condition, no movement at all in the laminate on the neck. Its Wenge and Bubinga I believe. There’s a slight, lighter, discolouration surrounding the EMG pickups which could indicate a change of ‘pup’s’ prior to my ownership, although there is no evidence of router activity. Volume Push/Pull active passive, blend and bass/treble. Strung with La Bella Flats it does sound ‘organic’ but punchy, if that makes sense. The bass fits into a ‘teardrop’ bass case with contours to secure it in place for travel. With regards to condition, it is immaculate apart from the previous mentioned slight discoloration and two other marks addressed below. None of which effect its playability. However there is a slight depression on the edge of ebony board around what would be the 10 fret, about 1mm in circumference and about .5mm in depth, quite unnoticeable unless you’re close up. There is also a slight mark on the face of the board which is about 18mm in length just around the 11th position, this will polish out. Both marks completely invisible unless you know they are there and you are looking for them. These marks are a result of a music stand grazing the bass whilst it was resting hung up on a wall bracket. I have captured this mark at its worst. “Paddle” headstock serial number and year of construction Asking £1,450.00, for this piece of magnificent Luthiery. No Trades thanks unless you have a 5 string fretless dragonfly 35” scale and cash. But you can try. Any questions please ask away, offers, trades PM only thanks for looking2 points

Well the day has arrived. Probably sooner than I would like if I'm honest. But after forming just a few months ago, and having only ever done half a dozen low key, barbecue and local bar type gigs, today we're playing our first music festival. I just hope the nerves don't get to me too much. Wish me luck, I'm going in!2 points

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money... but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for unidentifiable basses... I’m useless at pretty much anything else.2 points

A bit like lending a guitar to Pete Townsend for a Who tour in the 1960’s and expecting to get in back in one piece. 😀2 points

Any interesting threads? And how was your evening! Just a snap of a pretty ideal pair:2 points

Not totally music, but close. One of these two is me, the other the late John Peel. Things got confusing at one point when we worked on the same radio station. It got confusing again when I walked into pubs after JP's death and you could see people's brows beetling as they tried to work out why I wasn't dead.2 points

Have a good ‘un, I remember the first festival we did, it really was something else. Enjoy the whole day and make sure you stay hydrated, sounds very un Rock n roll but keeping hydrated will keep nerves at bay and the performance will be much easier, especially in the heat you’ve mentioned.2 points

Only just noticed this - sorry Funkle. I wouldn't use the Faital driver in Phil's small cab: it's too small. It'll sound boomy with no low bass - a bit like the red curve in Stub's simulations above. The Faital is more efficient than the Beyma, but the downside is that it needs a larger cab.2 points

Ah it’s difficult isn’t it... no one really wants anyone else using their gear but it does look a bit arsey to flat out refuse. Trouble is you don’t know if whoever’s using it can be trusted to sit on the toilet the right way around let alone understand how a bass amp works... Maybe there should be some sort of widely accepted interview system in place. “Hello potential rig user. What’s your preferred setting for the bass knob” ”...on full like all the others innit” ”Access denied” 😐2 points

I’m sure it’s already been said, but you could buy a tasty 77/78/79 precision in black for about £1400/£1500 and a nice mirror pickguard for about £50 (Fender had them as spares when they made the Steve Harris...) and then have a nice holiday. And a new car...2 points

Boss LS2 is designed for instrument level signals not speaker size volts. If you want to use it then it needs to be before any power amps so you would need 2 power amps, each of which would have a volume control so the LS2 becomes superfluous.1 point

It's daft isn't it? I mean, my keyboard player uses an "88 key Piano weighted controller" for every gig along with a second synth on top. I don't think anyone has ever complained because she wasn't using the high notes all the time or has too many keys!1 point

I used to spend Saturday afternoons in a certain Birmingham rock pub watching the scores, would often chat to a friendly guy I'd see in there about various things (but not usually music)...after about three years I found out he is the drummer in GBH...and we share a surname...1 point

The bass was a lot more forward in the mix before this one and I actually asked for it to come down. The bit that's at about the 30 second mark (which is very Rush-ish, and repeated elsewhere) could do with being a little louder, but otherwise I'm pretty happy overall. The rest of the new stuff is on par with this track and just general weirdness...we have something called Borodino that should be finished midweek that's best described as polka-metal-electronica.1 point

If instead of daisy chaining the two cabs, you route your bass to each via a small mixer (or an AB/Y pedal that has independent vol control for each output), you can adjust the output to allow for the different power handling of the two cabs / different volume requirements for on stage monitoring vs FOH.1 point

just a quick update on this one. I used this these last two weeks playing a mixture of shows with the backing band including a festival called static roots in Germany. had a great time and this bass performed wonderfully. Really suprised me how much i like the sound of a single coil compared to my usual split coil precision .1 point

Vincent and me made several transactions with musical instruments. Each time, transparency, reliability and reliability were at the rendezvous. I can only recommend it, Vincent is a man of confidence and a connoisseur of bass especially. to the pleasure of dealing with him again in the future if an opportunity arose.1 point

I always wanted a 355 but have settled on one of the 1964 reissue ES345s that were among the last models made at the Memphis factory. I've been through a few ES-type guitars including decent quality Japanese Orville, Tokai and Yamaha SA2100 and 2200 models. I'm happy with the Gibson though. It's not the prettiest guitar and there's loads of dirty grain behind the 60s cherry finish. That said, I don't like flamed ESs and I've seen similar heavily grained tops on authentic 60s guitars.1 point
