Moved from a single 610 to a modular 610. First outing this Thursday. Can't wait! Matamp were bloody amazing sorting the head for me ahead of recording in June. Such top guys. Head sounds amazing.

Rock-hopping a bit, back to Tom's ( @wwcringe ) second refurb, the Squier, it's pretty much done. Just got to make sure the tone rotary is working properly (I don't have a bass rig and it sometimes takes a bit of imagination through an electric guitar amp to see if there's a difference!) and then it's ready to give back to him next time he's passing. Here it is: The controls (all rotary switches), from the neck to the tail are: On/Kill Tone cap off/tone cap on Parallel/Series Neck/Both/Bridge Tom and I were looking for something to fill the original toggle-switch hole (this model originally had an active EQ). An adjuster from a 6-string electric Floyd Rose was perfect You can see a bit of 'mojo' at the back here The battery hatch is glued. The control chamber hatch has magnets: In the meantime, @Sibob 's neck should have arrived at his this afternoon and - to complete the circle because it doesn't get much spookier than this - yesterday, @Sibob was at the PLASA show at the Olympia. And while he was there he watched a live performance by Nyah Grace (great singer/songwriter). And accompanying her was a bassist. And @Sibob thought he recognised the headstock logo. See the beginning of this thread. Yes - it was Tom. And yes, he was playing the refurbed Ibanez that started this whole thread off: Small world….

You could make your own show up. Go onto youtube and pick a video from an ancient bluesman, a 'challenging' modern-ish band, somebody who won a BBC jazz award three years ago and a burke playing spoons in an ethnic hat. OK ? Now flick between them and a vid of Joolz on boogie woogie piano, over and over again. Play Joooolz at the same time as one of the vids....it won't fit, but that never stops Joooooooolz. Turn the bass waaay down and you'll not notice the difference. Not that I watch it of course, it's shiite.

I’m a massive fan of Kraftwerk and would to see them live. A friend of mine saw them a few years ago with his girlfriend (she’s a fan, he’s not). When I asked him what he’d though of it he said it was like watching four old men giving a Powerpoint presentation. She can take me next time.

Compression is a bit of a black art and very easy to screw up as you seem to have found out At the risk of sounding patronising, (and I'm not meaning to be) are you familiar with compressors? Do you understand what the various controls do and how they impact your sound? If not, then it's definitely worth taking the time time get an appreciation of what the various parameters do as this will enable you to dial in exactly what you want. There are different types of compression, some obvious, some more subtle, so you need to know what you're aiming for and then use the knowledge of what the different controls do to try to achieve what you want. There's a very useful guide on the Ovnilab site and @51m0n has written a sterling guide to compression basics. Both of these will be able to educate and inform you way better than I ever could @Al Krow often badgers me to share my settings with him but ultimately there are so many variables when it comes to compression that what woks for me is almost certainly not going to work for you. Different playing styles, different output basses, different tastes in compression etc. can all have a marked effect on how a compressor will react to the individual playing. For the record, I use the Stomp Multi-band compression for each of my gigging basses. Each one is set up differently to compliment the bass and the style of compression I like, but generally speaking it's a low-ish ratio, fast attack with slower release times. After that everything else is a matter of taste, the various thresholds, gains, crossover points and so on. Having re-read this I can see how unhelpful it is

I always do my own and as lng as its not tight and you only use small adjustments at any one time and wait for neck to settle there really shouldn't be any great issues. If the truss is tight then leave well alone and seek professional help. Nothing worse than a tight truss Matron. I never touch nut or frets to be honest and would rather get a professional to do that. Dave

It's actually a pre-L screw, dating to 1963, or could be 1964. Many people confuse these, as the width of the cross on the head is .95782344 mm for both years. The only way to tell the difference is to measure the depth of the cross - for 1963, it's 1.09761524mm, for 1964 it's 1.09761522mm. People who know their Fenders can hear the difference, there's clearly more depth in the sound of the 1963 screw.

Strings look well ropey. I'd stick flatwounds on it. But whatever, I'd change them, leave the rest as is. People spend fousands trying to faux that look.

his main is a 57. I had the Sting signature for a while and it sort of purred. Ash body, maple board. Nice bass but then I had a replica made of his 57. Alder body, more thump but lovely

For all I know they may have preferred this guy! He did play all the right notes at the right times instead of generally pissing about and trying to cram in as many fast runs as he can! Luckily I'm the band treasurer, so if they ever want to £47 kitty back they'd best be nice to me.

I know it looks a little bit Rowan Atkinson, but this is the mod I did to the Stewmac binding channel Dremel tool. I used it on a previous build, forgot all about it for the top binding of this one and then remembered so did it again for the back binding channel. And yes, it's just a couple of strips of maple super-glued to the jig But the problem with the jig is that, with a top heavy Dremel on top, it is almost impossible to keep the tool vertical - there is no datum. And if it isn't vertical, the channel comes out either wrong dimensions, or out of square, or both. All these couple of sticks do is make it easier to see if the tool is vertical as you go round the dished top and back. And then, like the top binding documented a few pages earlier, I ironed it on again. And yes, that's a bit weird but, for me, it works. For both the top and back - this is the best binding job I've done on an acoustic so far: And a bit more sanding to do, but the tail stock detail could now be completed: And then, all of a sudden, it's time for final sanding and application of the finish

The last two posts pretty much mirror perfectly my thought process when I recently left my band. If you're earning good money then you don't mind putting up with a bit of cr@p. If you're in it for the enjoyment and it stops being enjoyable, what's the point?

Please just file under general gripe. Just drove up to Northampton to drop a bass off and thought to myself on the way up that I’ll only be a 45 minute drive from Bass Direct (I know I’m going up on Monday but within a hours drive...) so I’ll pop and grab a HX Stomp, in stock after all, the website says so. As I reversed out of the traditional motorway service station bass drop off point I thought to myself that I’d best phone ahead and check. “Nope, awaiting stock”. Great, it’s still showing as ‘in stock’ 5hrs later despite being told on the phone that they were getting some in next week. So I decided to drop in to Peach Guitars in Colchester, bit of a detour but roughly on the way home, after all they’re in stock, the website says so. Phoning ahead again, just in case, I’m told ‘No, sold out’ well, at least they’ve changed it now. So finally I phone Dawson’s in Reading, after all they’re in stock, the website says so. And for once the shop info matches the online info, two in stock, one on display, one unopened. I must admit during the 66 mile drive I wondered what I’d do if I got there and had been given incorrect info again. Luckily not and Dawson’s were spared my worse gentlemanly flounce, perhaps my monocle falling out in surprise. But anyway, in summary, an eight hour round trip and I’m now the proud owner of a HX Stomp, steep learning curve ahead.

Given the current pace of my custom build with Jon it wouldn't surprise me if he was still waiting for the repair work to be done :).

Since I first tried them, I don't use other (roundwound) strings. The lower tension is incredibly comfortable and they tend to last. At first I have to turn the tone know (or the treble) a little bit down,. I use all my basses with the Tone Hammer preamp. With my BBs (734 and 735) I just use it as DI, but since I'm going ampless 99% I needed one. However, it also gives me some tonal options in the mids that the BB preamp doesn't have. Still, I don't usually use the EQ with my BBs. And what you people were talking about increasing the mids in the BB, with the 735 I just boost a little bit the mids and it sounds awesome with the P pickup or with both (I don't like it that much only with the bridge one).

The Squier version is the classic vibe range, which is the top of the Squier range so are excellent. The Thomann basses are amazing value, very well made, sound really good, the electrics let it down, but easily changed. Do a search for reviews on Google, they are rightly well liked, especially for the price. The best bass you can buy under £100 IMHO. The Squiers have more of a standard neck, whereas the Thomann one's have a traditional thicker neck. I'd say buy the Thomann, see if you like it, if you do you can generally sell them for close to what they cost new, and upgrade to the Squier or Fender!

The 'energy' is in the robotic synth lines, which assuming a half decent PA/mix, can sound great live. Shame the PSBs have to occasionally ruin the effect by singing Nicely put

Really please with my first bass postage to Germany, i decided to use inter parcel and sent it with Parcel force euro priority drop off and insured As the bass valuations ,you need a hardcase for the insurance to be valid ,!i took many pictures before during and after, and finished packing, I was a tad anxious but the tracking made was great, very happy with myself

Yes - the antithesis - they seem to spend all their time away from family touring. I can't imagine any of them need some money for a replacement hip or pension pot, unlike Aerosmith who snorted all theirs.

Wow - this thing kicks out low end!! On humbucker setting, it's delivering a perfectly full / meaty low end with the bass EQ at nil(!) and at most adding just a touch for added flavour. On single coil settings can usefully increase the bass EQ to 3/10, but really don't need to go any higher than that. Treble EQ provides a nice range from Motown dialled-off through to bright slap zing at the other end. Default for me will likely be 6 to 8 /10 with dialled-off when required. Of the other basses I've owned / played the Euro 5LX reminds me most of my Yammy BBNE2, with its sculpted body and similarly meaty low end (albeit the NE2 does have a more versatile on board active EQ than the Spector and pretty much the rest of my herd for that matter!) Believe me, that is high praise indeed coming from a Yammy fanboy like me! Just day 2, I know, and still in that honeymoon period etc. But am liking it a lot already and delighted that I've been able to pick it up at a 'sale' price.

I find myself in the position of having a better dep - hiram.k.hackenbacker is standing in for me for the next 2 Just Jovi gigs. Warren is a better player than I'll ever be but I feel relieved, not threatened, by this as it means I can relax and not worry about letting the band down by not being free. Plus all the guys in the band know him so for them it will be like putting on a pair of old slippers.

A vintage JJ tone is really rather simple. Precision bass, rounds, played with a pick into an overdriven amp. It's possible there was a torn speaker cone involved somewhere, but I wouldn't recommend trying to replicate that. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it probably won't be easily achieved with most modern amps.

Never had this with band members, but we did one gig at a Hockey club where someone in the audience got naked. We were half way through a song when I became aware of this dude walking straight down the middle of the hall, wearing nothing but a gold posing pouch. He got to the stage, took it off and threw it at the band, where it wrapped itself round one of the cymbals. Lady vocalist suitably scandalised. Oddly enough, the song we were playing was "What's that coming over the hill, it's a monster!". Although sadly, it turned out not to be.

I don't mind a bit of bad boy behaviour from the stars but every time I've seen a guitarist so much as whip a shirt off down the Green Dragon, mid set halfway through that Stereophonics cover everybody seems to do, I've tended to think *(insert whatever words our spam filters would change right here)*
