  2. Just a quick note of public thanks to Andy for rescuing the BB415: Having let the neck settle back with the body and under tension, I can report that we’re back up and running. While the bass is a cheaper stop-gap while I look for a nice P5, I don’t think it should be understated that Andy has restored this bass to being a solid, gig-ready instrument. Many thanks Si

  4. For the money this a totally wicked bass. Plays, sounds and looks fantastic! I bought it for a Costello tribute band that only ever did two shows so it’s been in it’s case ever since. It’s in mint condition except for one dink (see pics), no issues with it at all, it’ll be a shame to see it go but needs must. Includes hard Fender case, signed certificate and the unused chrome bridge cover that came with it. Here’s The Bass Centre’s spec stuff about it The Profile Bass Features • Classic Salmon Pink finish, with tortoise-shell scratchplate. • Custom body profile • Satin finish custom profile neck with Maccasar Ebony fingerboard • Original vintage style, grooved, roller bridge • Original 60's style flat-top, chrome control knobs • Custom wound pickups • Built in Korea by the same manufacturer responsible for the superb Bass Collection range

  5. With my method of finishing, the principle is "wherever you think you are in the process, nevertheless if it looks OK then STOP" The reason is that 'just one last coat' almost always goes wrong and then you have to sand down a couple of layers and build back up to where you had been a few days earlier. Am I right, fellow builders?? So for the back, I have stopped : It's got there a couple of coats earlier than I expected, but trust me, it can only go downhill from here so I'm stopping. The top, on the other hand, is NOT yet there. It has had one less coat than the back and so might be OK at the next coat...or it might take a few: The sides are actually OK but, at this stage I do Back & Sides and then Top & Sides to ensure there is no varnish edge round the periphery. So as I have to do at least one more coat on the top, the sides will have to be done more also. But that doesn't worry me - the sides are a lot less fussy to varnish than tops or backs and so the chances of it all going to pot are lower. This is how the sides are looking at the moment:

  9. Well the Stomp needs a ⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ on the packaging. I had no idea that it was capable of speeding up time, I sat down around 11 this morning, plugged it all in and started noodling away setting up my own presets and I looked up, 10 possibly 15 minutes later, and the clock said 16:30! Brigadier..!

  10. Yup, in rap/hip hop there's a lotta gash but there's also a lot I like a helluva lot. Outfits like A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B & Rakim and Public Enemy have never put a foot wrong 👌

  11. You're all right, but, paradoxically, wrong at the same time. But can we find a way throught this apparent cognitive dissonance? Oh god, if we must, you say. The bass in the pic is a Teisco Del Rey EB110 Tulip, related to, but not identical to the Kay EB100. If you look at the body shape of the Kay, it's not the same & not a "Tulip". This is what the guy in the pic's playing: https://reverb.com/uk/item/196751-teisco-del-rey-eb-110-tulip-31-inch-scale-bass-original-case-1960-s-sunburst The original Teiscos are quite collectable these days (hipsters, I expect) and a lot less common than the Kays, which were sold in every Woolies and your Ma's Kay (obvs) catalogue, somewhere in the pages beyond the ladies underwear section. They are, despite being Taiwanese & not Japanese, sort-of Teiscos, having been made in a factory established by and initially owned by Kawai/Teisco, which made a lot of identical & similar models. There - today you learned something you genuinely never gave a sh!t about.

  13. To be fair to Richard Cheese, his reworkings were always tongue-in-cheek. Smooth Jazz in its more earnest form is, of course, an abomination, and I do believe that when the Four Horsemen rend the very skye and ride upon this mortal plain, bringing unto mankind the woes of death, of pestilence, of famine, and of war, one of them shall hold aloft a saxophone, yea, even of the soprano register, lo, and his name shall be Kenny G.

  15. Hi folks! Aguilar AG700 - 700w class D head, really sounds incredible, by far the most 'full' sounding Class D amp I've used. Clearly very versatile, but has a slightly warmer character to it than most class D amps I've owned, and more presence across the frequency spectrum. Wide variety of sounds on offer, but it's virtually impossible to dial in a bad tone! It's in great condition, and will come in a Gator mixer bag I use to transport/protect it. Thanks for looking

  24. Yep ☝️ I used an Orange Terror through a couple of Markbass 1X15 cabs for this sound. Punch, heft, loudness, grind, volume, definition, thump and all the other words. I now use Ashdown CTM 100 through Barefaced Compacts, but (and I know this is a horribly controversial opinion around here) for 70s rock I absolutely preferred the Markbass cabs.

  25. I use the low B string more than the G - the one 4-string I gig is strung BEAD. As said it's partly about having more chord / key changes under your fingers rather than chasing up and down the neck. It also allows you to root anything in B - C - D an octave lower. Sadly many 5s do have a floppy B string - if that 5th string is an afterthought to a 4-string design. I have a rare top-end 1992 Fender Jazz+V on which the B string is unusable. My main squeeze is a GMR Bassforce 5 on which the B is as tight and clear as the other four (she was my first bass, and it took me a while to realise that not all 5s are like that!) I'd say go out and try as many basses as you can. Focus on whether that B string *feels* the same as the other four under your fingers. Some will do nothing for you, and one will feel like a body part you didn't know you'd been missing.

  27. I’ll throw in a vote for the Orange Bass Terror here, or the newer OB-1’s. Both a pretty much one trick ponies but it’s a hell of a trick and both cover that 70’s rock sound beautifully to my ears.

  29. Silvie and I put a helluva lot of work into getting gigs. We plan it like a military campaign ... there's a strategy (what sort of gigs to aim for, and in what geographical region), there's tactics (who says what when we get into the venue, and which marketing materials to show), and there's logistics (make each raid as efficient as possible, plan a route that gets us to the right places as quickly as possible and at the smallest expense). I play in two bands, each of which does about 30 gigs a year, and every single one of those gigs is brought in by us. Despite endless talk about their efforts, no other band member in either band brings in anything at all. Trouble is, that's largely our fault ... the more you do for people, the more they'll let you do. We've found most agents to be an incompetent waste of time, and most websites to be an expensive waste of time. There's no real substitute for actually going to the venue and talking to the people in charge, and if you bring in the gigs by schmoozing those people then they become your contacts and will be there to talk to when you need them. Being persistent, patient and polite also helps ... there are pubs that only gave us gigs on our third or even fourth visit. The one guaranteed fail is to think of landlords as being lying scum who are out to rip you off. We've met one or two who would match that description, but dozens and dozens who are friendly, hard-working people with very little time and a lot of pressure to deal with. By and large, we find they respond really well to bands who are honest and friendly with them.

  34. Here’s my updated rig. I have a Tech 21 VT500 and Mark Bass LM3 (MB is backup incase god forbid I get a failure on the Tech 21), into a Trace Elliott Elf 1x10. Homemade pedal board on top has a Line6 G75 Wireless into a Boss TU-3 then into a Thumpinator. All this is DI’d into the PA for front of house. Really small footprint and an easy carry/setup. Very happy 😊🎶👍🏼🎵

  35. I think 5 string basses are easier to play to be honest! You can keep the same shapes and fingerings in a larger number of positions, though I don't think about that so much nowadays - it's all natural. I never regret having the 5th string there, but sometimes regret not having it on a 4 string. In terms of versatility between modern and vintage I'd go for a Sadowsky Metro Express, Fender 5 string jazz with active electronics, or a Yamaha BB 735 series, for both those modern and vintage sounds in one bass. Any of those will do anything you need in any situation (though I know Fender are what you've said you want to move away from).

  36. For sale this beautiful ACG Recurve 4. Anyone familiar with these basses knows that they need no introduction. Having picked up a 5 string J-type from the venerable Mr Cringean, and feeling more comfortable with the extra string this one is being neglected and needs to make way for another 5 string (more to come on that 😉) Home studio use only, never gigged, in excellent condition. Happy to ship. 39. When I was an apprentice I had to hand plane loads of 2” wavy elm boards 24” x 120” down to a flat and exact 3/4” despite the presence of a 24” Wadkin FM planer, it was hard work but I learned how to do it, I also learned that it was also better that way if uneconomical. Trust me the end product will be better and you’ll be wiser 😀

  47. They probably got away with the name as well, claiming it stood for Epsom Mad Funkers but the B side of Unbelievable was called EMF and featured the lyrics E Ecstacy, M Mot***f**ers, F From us to you, or something along those lines. I still hear Unbelievable on the radio now - they still haven't noticed !!
