Now I haven't listened to any Meshell for quite a long time. You might be aware I like her music from my avatar. I listened to it in the car today and Im still blown away how good it is. The lyrics, her incredible tight groove bass playing which is totally unique, you can tell its Meshell when she plays.. Everything about this album is just fantastic.. Good music stays with you and when you haven't heard it for a long time its even sweeter than the first time.5 points

Bass players, eh? This has to be the finest JMB ad I've seen in a long time !5 points

I recorded the bass part for this in my home studio (Bag End). I roadied and did the lights for this band in the 1980s and always wanted the gig but it never happened (the bass player they had was perfectly competent and I moved on long before he did ;)). In these days of email and home recording, it became a possibility. An old dream come true. It is off Multi Story's forthcoming album CBF10 (I am only on this one track). The whole track is recorded on my Wal Custon Fretless 4 string.4 points

I got this jaw-droppingly beautiful bass in a trade with @sunfishabout 6 months ago and it has just been sitting in its case ever since apart from when @Soledad of this parish came to have a look at it The band I would have used this for has packed up and it seems a waste to have it sat here when I could release the funds for something else. What is there to say? Carvin AC40 4 string unlined fretless. Ultra slimline, weighs as much as a box of cereal. LR Baggs electronics, ebony neck, spruce top, mahogany neck. Looks are subjective, of course, but for my money this is the smartest looking electroacoustic bass out there, which is what seduced me - it is just so different and eye-catching. But it also sounds magnificent - currently sporting black nylon tapes it really does sing. The whole thing screams quality. Comes with a Protec semi-hard case which is as good as it gets. here is a link to Brian's (sunfish) original advert http://basschat.co.uk/topic/325817-traded-carvin-ac40-fretless-electro-acoustic-bass/?tab=comments#comment-3535889 it is in exactly the same condition now as when I picked it up with those same tiny marks as originally described and had probably 2hrs playing since then so I am asking what I paid which is £650. Collection from Benfleet in Essex, meet half-way or could deliver within 50 miles for fuel - always open to discussion. But absolutely no courier. I would be very interested in a trade with a Barefaced Two10 with a small cash adjustment my way, if that appeals to anyone Obrigado!3 points

First rehearsal with the new LaBella low tension flats. At home i thought they sounded a bit dull and thud sounding. Today in a band setting they were absolutely perfect. They didn't have the attack of the rounds i was using but it wasn't overly noticeable in most songs. Most enjoyable part was no sore fingers on my plucking hand and no blisters. My fingers glided along the strings which was an unusual feeling when playing in earnest but really pleased with them. Think i'll need to fiddle about with my EQ to get just right with a bit more mid to top end just to clarify things. At times i found the bass getting a little lost in the mix. Not a big issue and can be sorted i reckon. Tension on the strings was pretty close to the rounds i normally use but the other thing i noticed was no fret rattle. I quite enjoyed not hearing as much rattle from the strings. All in all i think i'm pretty happy with them. Dave3 points

On Squier CV bass, picked originally over a fender MiM bass (which was actually not much more expensive) because it sounded and played better, not because of some inferiority complex as some people would have you believe I have kept this bass for several years because it had sentimental value, but it has been sitting around unplayed for several years and that is a bit pointless. All my basses are regularly gigged apart from this one, that hasn't been gigged since my last group 4 years ago. Because of the sitting around it does have crackling volume control, I will take that apart and spray it to see if it makes a difference. The other thing that kept me not wanting to sell it is the look of the neck when playing it - it really is nicer looking than all the other fender styles I had apart from the flame maple on my Maruszczyk. Unfortunately the thing that stops me playing it is I could park a truck between the strings, and for someone who thinks that the 16.5mm string spacing on the ibanez is a bit agrophobic, the 19mm+ spacing on these is way too much for me. So in the end I decided to trade it for a jazz, and as no trades came up here, I bought a jazz and now have to sell this. I have the metal plate thing that gets in the way of the bridge in a box somewhere which I could add. I am currently lacking boxes as nothing I bought recently had one, so pickup is best for me, and any offers really depend on closeness. I can deliver or meet people within 30-40 miles of yeovil and I get to bath and bristol often, and maybe also exeter at weekends.2 points

So a while ago my band and I were creating a new song and we started writing the bridge...since it was a "jam session" we really had no idea what to throw in there but we wanted to keep it simple since it was pretty much an Alternative Rock song with a basic structure. Until the drummer turned to us and said "what if we had a bass solo?" We all laughed at the suggestion but decided to try it out. I stepped on the fuzz pedal and just went to town with some basic licks. Turned out everyone liked it and we decided to keep it in the song. It's really simple and it leads to a "breakdown" of sorts but we thought it sounded alright. Yesterday we released that song, here it is: Would appreciate it if you listen to the whole song, but if you want to skip to the "bass solo" part, it starts at 2:33! Let me know what you think, always open to constructive feedback2 points

Wow that sounds like an impressive rig. I was using the studio rig today. An EBS HD360 thru an Ampeg 810. My own rig is a Mesa Mpulse 600 via Mesa PH212 playing 70's Glam Rock covers so quite a mix from Under Moon of Love to Hellraiser and Saturday Nights Alright. Sounded good in them all. Dave2 points

It's a selectable option for an up-charge. I also spec'd Hipshot Ultralites to counter any possible hint of neck-dive, of which there is none. Have a tinker with the customiser: https://public-peace.de/configurator/jake-c/ Be warned, once you get going, it's hard to walk away.2 points

This also check out interview with Joni discussing Jaco - she was fully aware of just how fragile and fractured he was mentally and emotionally but she tolerated extreme behaviour from him because she understood the genius of his playing and she knew without it he would not have shone as bright as he did Check out how this bass line drives the song - very accurate and well played cover2 points

I can get lost in that song. Played on her 60's jazz. "My mother used to whore herself" Its a great start.😆 But an insite into Meshell's childhood. Like you say her touch and funky nuances on the bass are just fantastic with the keys near the end...2 points

With the body drying, and me not really feeling up to a full-on neck carving session, I've done a little work on the headstock. I had the image in my head but I just couldn't get the angles to work on paper. It took me way too long to realise 3+1 was the obvious solution. An what's more, the person I bought the tuners from on ebay sent me the extra bass side one for free! I can't tell you how many times I checked and double checked that, due to the orientation, I actually needed a treble side one for the bass side. I almost got caught out with my reverse headstock build, realising about a second before hitting "pay now" that I would need left handed tuners! Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with it. It's starting to make sense visually with the tuners in place. I still need to carve a ramp of sorts into the top to accommodate the strings running down to the tuners.2 points

👍👍👍 I recall reading somewhere that he picked up and played a lot of top lines from a wide array of sources. I think it's a real signature of his that he went from root chordal / harmonic playing into melodic toplines and back, seemlessly. 'A Remark you Made' is a really fine example of that PLUS it's a really evocative title for a track. Bloody love it. And Joe Zawinul's piano solo is a fine demo of space awareness - knowing when NOT to play a note. I could go on...2 points

Well heavy Weather was one of the albums that convinced me jazz wasn't a complete waste of time (along with Birds of Fire). If you think Jaco only did crazy chops, listen to this for some of the most lyrical bass playing I've ever heard: I love Hejira too 🙂2 points

The Black Limba body is a bit thick at 50mm. So after some rummaging in the garden and shed I managed to make this completely out of scrap. Works really well. It cost me nothing which is just how i like it. The grey noard was" salvaged" from a skip outside howdens. 6ft end panel with a tiny mark.1 point

Dave Green is in my opinion legendary in his Ashdown advice. He recently fixed me up with a replacement set of Mosfet's for a super early 1997 ABM500H rack mount amp. I also personally use a 2000 vintage ABM EVO500 as my main gigging amp and the valve sound on these amps is more like a valve 'presence' than a 'grind' option. I must admit to liking this very much. I also use an EVO2 300 watt ABM big chassis version (2005 vintage) where the valve sound is much more aggressive than earlier models so there is def a difference in pre amp valve performance for different model year ABM's. I have no experience with evo 3 or 4 versions so not sure how these are voiced. The older ABM's in my opinion have a much more subtle rounded presence rather than a grit/grunge sound.1 point

I do get a bit fed up with everything that surrounds playing in a pub covers band - trying to park, lugging gear, setting up, managing the PA, starting our first set half an hour after I'm usually in bed, packing up afterwards, etc., but almost always as soon as we're a couple of songs in I think - yeah, this is why I do it. The last specific moment that gave me an extra smile was probably our guitarist pulling off a particularly blistering (yet still tasteful) solo, complete with behind the nut bends, in the middle of... Mustang Sally.1 point
