  1. Hi folks Again I find myself with too much ‘stuff’ and pressing family commitments so I’m looking to sell this beautiful bass. If you want the ‘ultimate’ Smith bass, this is it. One of the original 200 hand made in NYC by Ken and Vinnie (Fodera). Completely standard and the neck is dead straight, the action is super low. It barks, growls and plinks with the best of ‘em. - Haz pre-amp (two band, blend and vol) - Phase switch and active/passive switch - Smith bridge (early version) - Gold hardware including original headstock roundel - Walnut top, maple body - Ebony fingerboard - Comes with Smith Wax - Elixir super light strings (new) 0.040- 0.095 - Dunlop locks included - Weight about 4.3kg/9.5lbs More details here Must be collected from York (can meet a reasonable distance). Comes with teardrop style hard foam case. Ask away if you have any questions. I’m around most weekends and evenings if you’d like to try the bass yourself in my home studio setup which will let you hear the bass perfectly. A few pictures, ask if you’d like anything else! Cheers ped

  2. Just had a funny thing happen. I paid a deposit for an Industrial Radio MIDIBass at the end of December and the payment has still not cleared into the company’s account nearly two weeks later. I contacted my bank today to find out what was going on and it turns out that the intermediary bank (HSBC US) has held the payment as being suspicious. My reference was IRN-## which is my invoice number. I got asked if the payment was related to Iran and was asked a whole bunch of other security questions and asked for information about what the payment was for etc. Was tempted to say that I normally pay for my arms to rogue states using bitcoin!

  3. Custom built Jazz 5 by Swiss luthier Tino Tedesco. DiMarzio Ultra Jazz Pickups. Aguilar Preamp. Hipshot bridge and tuners. Removable Walnut ramp. Weighs around 7.5lbs. (7lbs 9oz) Great sounding B string, super lightweight, nice pre. I’ve been using this bass as my main gigging bass for over a year now, I really like it, but I’m returning to another instrument of mine and I find switching back and forth between basses to be frustrating, so I’m letting this beautiful bass go. Open to offers and trades. Hunting for Flea Jazz Bass + cash. Thinking.mp4

  4. Hi all, I am not at all sure I want to sell this as it is a completely insane bass on every level from the craftsmanship to the pickups and pre-amp, however, as is always the way, there is a bass I want and if I'm to afford it, one of my heard must go! The 'Bajadera' bass as it is called has a 39 laminate body with through neck construction, it has a multi-laminate binding and comes with exceptionally rare and quite outstanding Lefay Rough Crystal pickups, it has a brand new Noll 3 band pre-amp and has had a full re-finish by Mike Walsh of Zoot Basses roughly 2 years ago. The action is superb, the tone is anything from rich deep to singing high. It's one of the most stunning basses I have ever seen/owned. I'm based is Basildon, Essex. Collection is preferred but postage can be arranged if absolutely required. Any questions, please ask. (Will post some better photos tomorrow!) Russ.

  5. I disagreed with a lot of what Neil Peart said over the years but I also disagree with some of the things that I have said over the years. He wasn't perfect, as a drummer or as a lyricist, but he kept trying and growing and for that he was a real example. He was a man of integrity and for that he has my eternal respect.

  6. Meeting up for the first time with three other muso's through JoinMyBand exactly a year ago, we plugged in, tuned up, and the first half-a-dozen songs we played all sounded great, everyone had done their homework and had actually worked on the songs we agreed to run through before turning up. Best first meeting I've ever been involved in, and we are still together now. 🙂

  7. After a fairly decent start to building basses ( I’ve actually sold one, the walnut P to @Tullfan ) I’ve had a hankering to do more. So, this time I’m using swamp ash for the bodies as both will be painted. Bass 1 - All black stealth looking P Bass, Status Neck and CS ‘62 pups. Bass 2 - Lake Placid Blue, matching headstock and again CS ‘62 pups. Both keepers and for specific band projects so they are needed. I’ve always wanted a LPB 😍 These are being painted properly by Dave Wilson who is unbelievably brilliant at all things bass, especially painting. Im sure I’ll be back on for more hints and tips. Anyway, a few bits of where I’m up to now.

  10. I was just reading about an early 20th-century conductor called Arturo Toscanini. Just before the start of a big concert one of the bassoon players hurried up to Toscanini, he was in a highly agitated state, and explained that he’d broken one of the keys on his instrument. Toscanini thought for a few seconds, then said ‘it’s alright, that note does not occur in tonight’s concert’. Apparently he knew every note for every instrument in that concert. That’s about 70 musicians and 2 hours of music. He also knew every note for every instrument in 250 odd other works from their repertoire, plus the words and music for 100 or so operas, and numerous other classical works. We had a class on my BMus course called LPW, which stood for live performance workshop. I hated it. Each week we had to learn a notated part, in my case it was the bass line, then perform it as part of a randomly picked ensemble. Some were quite easy, others were ridiculously hard. I always struggled to remember them, my best mark was in the jazz module, where we improvised and were allowed charts on stage. This is Toscanini destroying the bass section of an orchestra.

  11. I write for a US based music and culture based online magazine called PopMatters and the job of writing Neil’s obituary fell to me. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to write. https://www.popmatters.com/neil-peart-2020-tribute-2644669184.html?rebelltitem=1#rebelltitem1

  15. Bass wise, no problem assuming I can remember the song at all, I can remember every part of it. Sometimes I have a mental block on the start (some times I have a mental block on everything). I have a list of the first notes of each song, so if I ever do, the first note will tell me the rest of the song. Lyrics wise, I can remember most of them unless I am also playing and then I can go a bit blank. Toscanini sounds a bit like an italian version of my first childhood piano teacher though

  20. My Andyjr1515 'special' is just about ready so it's time to put my lovely Elwood up for sale. Scale-length is 30" with a 22-fret maple board, 40mm nut width, zero fret, 2 SD J Quarter Pounders, weighs approx 3.5kg and strung with La Bella flats. In practically-new condition, this is a sweet-playing bass that's easy on the eye - and the shoulder! Price includes a very nice Maru' s-s gig-bag. I'd prefer that buyer collects but am happy to deliver or meet within a 50-mile radius of M5 J25. Otherwise buyer arranges/pays for collection/delivery.

  21. Cost me a fortune in tyres..... I'll do my best but can't confirm just yet - we might have a wedding gig (I hate wedding gigs...) I'm also a bit reluctant to attend if you're going to be there (they do say one should never meet ones heroes.....)

  23. Almost as bad was the lone Piper who used to lurk outside the King James hotel in Edinburgh waiting for busloads of tourists to be dropped out front so he could give them a quick blast of Scotland the Brave. At all hours of the day and night, or so it seemed. He was one of the characters primarily responsible for me wanting to become a sniper. Him and the receptionist who always used to put me in the room immediately above his "pitch".

  24. Mr Peart was one of the few famous people that would be interesting enough to sit and have a chat with. Obviously he liked his privacy but he had some interesting and worthwhile views on life. Rush have never been full of themselves like many other bands when they became famous. They've always appreciated their fans and what they've done for Rush. Still can't get over this. So so sad. Like the lyrics from my fav Rush song Bravado :- "And if the music stops There's only the sound of the rain" Dave

  26. Friday night in Lewes and the local paper said "I haven’t come across Last Great Dreamers before, but I like them straight away. Visually they are striking, looking like a Clockwork Orange droog gang who have stumbled across boho chic. Musically they get straight to the point with superbly catchy glam tinged pop punk, stacked with killer riffs and lush vocal harmonies. The songs are immediately engaging, and on stage every band member is really going for it, and you can’t ask much more than that." and then Saturday night was the 100 Club, which was my favourite gig of the decade (although the decade is but 12 days old!)

  27. The poor bassist appears to be having some kind of medical episode, and the nasty keyboardist is taking the pith out of him.

  28. The bassist and keyboard player look like they could be characters from 'The Big Bang Theory'. It reminds me of when I played at a mathematics conference at St Andrews University, a few years ago. There was a lot of sandal and sock action on the dance floor that night.

  31. Having just got a new bass that has taken over as number one workhorse it’s time to thin the collection. This one is an early JV Squier Precision Bass. It has a JV1 prefix serial making it a late 1982 model according to the 21 Frets site. The bass has the wider string spacing and flatter neck profile of the earlier models and the desirable highly figured Sen ash bodies. The neck is superb on this one: frets thin and low but lots of life in them and beautiful wide dark rosewood board. I’ve owned this bass twice as I sold it and then bought it back recently. Unfortunately during its former life and subsequent time away from me it has undergone some fairly radical modding. A P bass pickup route had roughly been gouged from the wood in the bridge I covered the rather crude edges of the route I used a brass pickup ring I had made. Please note due to several requests I’ve used a Seymour Duncan pickup with a matching black cover rather than the cream Dimarzio! Each pickup has independent stacked volume and tone and has some great tonal variations and real punch and clarity. Now it’s certainly no collector’s piece but it looks far better than previously and is a superb sounding instrument with a lovely low action. There are cosmetic dings but the neck is straight ,true and has plenty of play in the trussrod. I’m not certain if the spiral bridge is a replacement. The scratchplate, electrics and pickups are modded - the neck pickup looks like a US Fender. Note the replacement gold screw on the back of the headstock strap button. It has a great balance and weighs around 4.5kgs so relatively easy on the shoulders for long gigs. It comes with a gigbag as I’m now using the spare case. No trades sorry. Cash and pickup preferred and UK only. I could post at buyer’s cost.

  33. Reporting in following Saturday's gig. The RCF 702 replaced Alto TS 115a. Running it with Alto TS312 tops. Noticeably tighter and with more physical presence, especially with music form the iPad between sets. Actually got a bit of 'I can feel that' type bass that the Alto never produced. We don't put bass through the PA, just kick drum but I got the distinct impression that it would handle it just fine as long as you don't take the mick volume wise. The cover is also ace, as it has little zippable flaps, cowboy underwear style, meaning that you don't have to remove it at all. Plus it's 2/3 of the size and weight, which is the biggest positive for me as I've got to lug the thing around.

  40. A friend of mine got an ACG custom made. It was 5 string and had a huge string spacing so wasn't my favourite design, but holy flip it was seriously good quality and clearly played brilliantly.. It made me rethink how basses should feel and play. Hence i want to buy that 4 string above.

  45. Hi Stippy as someone who got into this at age 49, I would recommend truefire.com. Its really cheap for a year, much cheaper than teachers and you get lots of little 20 minutes lessons that have great videos and explanations and are a nice bite size. Better than having a teacher because its at your pace so you're not wasting any cash. I would go for the Stu Hamm beginner courses but then truefire have a path of beginners courses you can follow. I would then add a real human lesson in once every 6 months to correct anything or help with specific problems like choice of beer to go with your new hobby. Ive played about 30 gigs since Ive started and Im loving it. I finally understand why Ive always loved certain songs and its down to great bass lines!
