  1. I know organisations/places like the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame don't really count for anything - but it's still nice when a band who deserves more plaudits receives such worldwide recognition. Today, one of my all-time fave musical acts - 'The Doobie Brothers' were announced as 2020 inductees! Can't wait to see my good friend (and bass influence) Tiran Porter finally reunite with his old band for the induction ceremony/performance, along with other alumni including original drummer John Hartman and guitar legend Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter!

  3. Thought I'd get it over with sharpish 🙂 Trip from Falkirk to Hull yesterday was a success. Pleasant memories of Westone basses. Plenty of ads in the music papers,Henry Thomas on Rock School, stocked in plenty of shops. In great condition for 37 years old. There was another on ebay which was cheaper but a good pal lives outside of Hull, long overdue visit made it worth the extra. That all changed. Young lad selling it dropped his price when I suggested cash vs Reverb fees 👍 When I got there he had another surprise 😮 Because I'd drove near 5 hours he decided another 10% off was in order 😎

  6. Not sure about this one but I really can't decide between my SR5 and the Tony Franklin. It's a 2019 Fender Tony Franklin on virtually mint condition apart from a tiny lacquer crack on the bottom bout (pictured) it comes with the case and all the candy and has probably been played for an hour. Other than that, it's absolutely pristine. Its currently strung with a new set of TI Flats but the original strings are also included. I'm looking for £1,400 plus shipping, which is a huge saving on a new one of these. Thanks for looking

  7. This Strandberg Prog 5 is in excellent condition and has recently been restrung/set up and plays great! This bass will be well packaged upon delivery. Save some pennies with this 'As New' Strandberg! Photos are of the actual bass! FREE Mainland UK Postage. No trades at the moment. The Boden Bass Prog model was developed for bass players who seek a more modern and aggressive sound that can be fine-tuned with the utmost precision. Featuring a lightweight chambered Swamp Ash body with solid Flame Maple top and Roasted Maple neck with Ebony fretboard, Nordstrand pickups and Darkglass preamp the natural acoustic sound is balanced with plenty of girth but with a bright cutting edge when needed with the bass’s onboard preamp equalisation well as the controls on the amplifier. The Ebony fretboard is slick and fast to play, while also providing a lot of highs that help you cut through the mix. More info here: https://strandbergguitars.com/product/boden-bass-prog-5-brown/

  8. I've just started the first of John Patitucci's Melodic Etudes, and am very impressed with them. I'd like to know if anyone else here is working through the book? There are 60 studies in various keys and with various scales, and then there is a scale dictionary at the back, with separate fingering for upright and bass guitars. I've just done a video of the first study, in C Major. I recorded it twice: once unplugged but with a close mic, the second time through a Phil Jones Double Four. I like the acoustic sound, although completely impractical in any gig situation! The bass is the Ibanez SRH500F, a great instrument for the price, though I really wish it didn't have those "in-between frets" dots on the fretboard, which are really distracting! TI-Flats - can't remember the gauge.

  9. I can tell you know all of what I'm about to say. Without a "strategy", and a common idea of goals and direction it doesn't matter whether the band spends 50quid or 5grand recording the next single/Ep/album etc. The end product is only of partial importance. How one promotes it and what one wants from the promotion is vital. The whole band needs to plan ahead, so promotion prior to a release and different type of promotion at various stages after release. It seems you'll have your work cut out getting the other band members on side with this. To your producer question I would love to work with a producer for my next Ep. Although I have a keen sense of the sound and context I want for my music I would welcome someone that could consolidate my aims and take them further. As a solo artist this is much easier for me than if I was part of a band though. Sadly I can't afford to bring in a producer so that's decided for me.

  10. I tried the logo in red and blue but it just didn’t look good I think monochrome was definitely a better choice! I remembered I had some waterslide decal paper so I printed it off last night and have just applied it to the pedal just got to clear coat it tomorrow. I think it looks good if I do say so myself!!..........😀 Now the quandary is do I fit black knobs or chrome ones?? The foot switch is chrome so I’m leaning more towards chrome at the mo??

  13. We’ve worked with a great producer - Pat Collier, former bassist with The Vibrators. We chose him specifically given we liked his production on other bands that we like, UK Subs, Booze & Glory, The Last Resort to name a few. We knew his sound would work well with our sound and it turned out to be the right choice as he made our albums sound exactly as we wanted, like us but with his signature production sound. So I’d say working with a producer is def worth it, but choose wisely, do the required research and get the one that will work well with your band/sound. And also have a clear understanding amongst all in the band as to exactly what you want, nothing worse than a band who don’t know collectively what they want, how can a producer work with that?

  14. Got home. Had a glass of wine and upon reflection, I now think this pickup actuation design is overengineered. There is a far simpler solution. And it takes up less space. And it's cheaper. No vibrations, allows more movement. And quicker to move the pickup. A simple recessed thumb screw through the body, securing the shuttle from the back.

  16. Yeah it is! Same way a Kemper is expensive as is an AxeFX is. DG pedals have always been top end prices. Sure they’re good for many folks and especially the heavier genres and I don’t think I’ve read of many, if any product failures. The latest, newest gear will always have a cost due to its latest chip set, cutting edge this and that and hopefully it’s sound quality. The product looks great as does its integration, innovations and its overall Darkglass ‘sheen’ but you’re not seriously gonna say £1500+ isn’t expensive? I’ve used some DG pedals and they’re good, the AO being my preferred pedal in the range. I’ve tried out some Neural software plug ins and again they’re easy to navigate, well designed but not tones I’d really gravitate to in my gigging environment. And as for price I’m happy to throw a wedge at a piece of gear I really fancy trying out and have done so in the past. Identifying that something is expensive isn’t a criticism as much as it is a statement of fact- DG gear always tends to be spendy!

  17. I’d put the feelers out in the Uk but had no real joy then found this beauty out in the US. The guy I bought it off had bought it off the son of the chap who had owned it from new in 1980 and had just flipped it. It was manufactured in late 1976 and must have sat around for several years. Anyway I’m the new lucky owner and this bass is a gem. 100% original and it still has the bridge cover plastic buffers on which is really rare to find.... I’m buzzing

  19. We’re lucky in my band that our guitarist is an audio engineer and we have a bunch of guys at his studio which he bounces ideas off, all for free. I’m not sure I’d employ a producer unless I had a mega record deal. Which I never will. Personally @AndyTravis I think your EP sounds bloody great as it is, it doesn’t need any “production” because the songs are already well crafted with sensible musicianship. Tell them to stop being daft and just get back to rehearsing and finding gigs. Or find a new bunch to play with

  20. As of the start of the year, I'm a Spector owner again. I straightened the neck out because I like my necks pretty much bang on straight and dropped the saddle heights down. I wound the Tonepump down to 50%, which I think is a must for any bass with that preamp and it sweetens the tone up so much. On the 100% setting as they come from the factory the gain output is just ridiculous. Even putting the input gain on my Markbass Ninja 1000 way down, it would still clip even when not playing particularly hard. The eventual plan is to swap the pickups out for EMG X series and add an EMG premap with volume, pan and 3 band EQ just to give me more on board flexibility with the mid control. The EMGs in this might go in my Yamaha Attitude. The thing is, while I find the Tonepump to be a little fiddly to use compared to a 3 band, it just sounds so damn good once it's set right that I don't feel in a hurry to start changing parts.

  21. I think you're right, it doesn't matter how much money you throw at production if it's not being promoted properly. You'd be far better off to spend a much smaller sum on targeted Facebook advertising IMHO.

  23. Selling my Thumb 4, I'm pretty much only playing 5 these days and I'd like this to get a good home. I ordered this from warwick in 2017, it's not seen a lot of use, mostly home/studio with just a handfull of shows so is in fantastic condition, a little string wear on the neck pickup but otherwise great. This is the latest spec with the matching tuning pegs, truss rod cover and control cavity cover. It has the latest spec pickups and preamp, the one with the USB charging (although it can be converted to battery easily with the battery clip that comes with it). This one I had built to be tuned BEAD but switching out the Just-a-nut to a standard 4 string one is super simple, these can be ordered from Warwicks shop. The bass is utterly brilliant as you would expect from a Masterbuilt Warwick and honestly if it had one more string I would never consider selling it. It comes with everything it came with from the factory including a rather lovely leather gig bag. Collection would be preferred but happy to ship. Open to offers on the asking price but less keen on trades although something Sandberg and cash will definitely be considered. Will get pictured up in a couple of hours.

  24. some developments today in the moving pickup design... 2x Multi start screw with thumb wheel at each end to move pickup shuttle. 1 revolituon wil be 8mm travel. im considering moving the entire mechanism to be actuated from the back of the bass for better acces, however it then opens up the opsibility of it moving unintentionally.

  29. Great for finished maple (lacquered or what have you). Maybe some windex on a microfibre towel or a toothbrush to get the gunk from the frets. Treat unfinished, oiled or waxed maple boards with tru-oil, gunstock oil or Danish oil. The neck can be waxed with gunstock wax, like MusicMan does. I used Birchwood Casey gunstock oil and wax on my SR5.

  32. Good toe-dippers do crop up, you just have to be in the right place at the right time. My sixer is a fairly tatty Ibanez BTB406 that I picked up pre-loved/abused on fleabay for £100. Neck is fine, plays well and sounds great, it's just the aesthetics that have taken a kicking and obviously put off other potential buyers.

  39. Hi! Selling my ungigged and mint (for a roadworn anyway!) Fender JMJ Mustang. It just doesn't get used enough and I know someone will get a lot more out of it than I. It's a great little bass and makes a lot of noise for sch a small thing! Is very fat and round too. It comes with a gig bag. I live in Exeter but work weekly in Cardiff so can meet anywhere between or around the two if something can be organised. Thanks! UPDATE - looking for a trade for a nice 410 cab. Preferably an Aguilar 410 but open to ideas!

  43. And this is why I have almost zero interest in covers bands. I don't think there has been a single song mentioned yet that I would want to have seen/heard being performed by the band that wrote it back in the day when they were still young and sexy, let alone a bunch of middle-aged blokes churring it out in a pub...
