  1. If you don't eff it up occasionally, then you ain't trying hard enough. I'd much sooner hear a passionate performance than a perfect one.

  2. This Precision Special has one of the nicest necks I’ve played equal to my ‘79 Precision which is my go to bass. It has lots of dings as it’s been a well loved and gigged bass. There’s nothing structural, the truss rod and frets are fine, the finish still looks fantastic but there are dings. Pickups and circuitry are original, the passive active mini toggle is a bit ‘thumpy’ when you switch it but it works fine. Both active and passive sound great. The output jack is scratchy but it’s easily replaced and I’ll include an old spare I got but never got round to fitting. Some of the gold plate has worn with age and use. Crucially it’s heavy but not as heavy as most of these as they average between 10 and 13lbs. My white one was 12! This one is 10.5 or 4.8kgs in new money. On a decent strap it really is a comfy bass to play. It’s not a boat anchor but it’s no lightweight either. What you get is an incredibly punchy sound with bags of sustain and a very nice rare finish with matching headstock. The bass comes with Fender case that has a bit of a smoker’s smell to it. NB there’s a little plastic plugged area near the toggle switch where I assume a LED had been fitted at some stage although this would not be stock. I’m not looking for swaps or daft offers I don’t need to sell for financial reasons but do need to adhere to my one in one out policy. I also will not send it outside the UK please don’t be offended by this it’s just not something that I do. Back up for sale. I’d consider a swap for a passive Precision from this era. Now sold

  3. Sandberg California TT4 Lovely looking, playing and sounding Sandberg California TT4. Made in Germany of course. It's a very well built, high quality bass. It does look great of course, but most importantly it plays and sounds very good too. This TT has the optional blocks as position markers, and some nice flaming in the neck in the right light. The controls are volume/pickup balance/tone. The bass is in overall good condition, but has signs of use (fine scratches/swirls, some dents) and the pickup poles show some corrosion. Though no structural or affecting damages are present. All hardware and electronics work like they should, and the fretwork still looks great too. This bass weighs 4.1kg according to my kitchen scales. Asking €900 The bass is located in the Netherlands, but I am happy to ship insured within europe/UK at buyers risk. I have an ugly hardcase that will be included for shipping. Trades are welcome; Stingray (lacquered neck, 2eq ideally), precision, old musicmaster or mustang if it balances well...

  4. Thanks for the interest everyone! I guess now is not the good time to try and sell a bass like this and I keep getting pretty low offers so I've decided to withdraw it for now, maybe I'll re-list later in the year if things start to return to normal. Up for sale is my mint condition NS Design CR5 Radius bass. This is a first class instrument which I've owned from new and probably the most 'pro' instument I've ever owned. Its light, balances perfectly and sounds amazing! Why the sale then? The bands I play with now need a more middle of the road aesthetic and this is definitely a very modern looking and sounding instrument so it doesn't really fit in with the vibe. As a consequence it spends most of its time in the gig bag these days which is breaking my heart so its time someone else had the benefit of it. Its a 35" inch scale bass and has a super tight low B, I believe the body is chambered so it really is very light but has a solidness about it which gives you absolute confidence in the build quality, this really is a bass which will go on forever! The pickups and electronics are the EMG-X system which was designed specifically for Ned Steinberger for this bass and mix traditional magnetic pickups with piezo to given them a bit of extra bit and growl and slightly more natural response. There are a couple of very minor marks on the back plus one on the back of the 'headstock' (shown in the pictures below), but the front of the bass is completely clean with no marks at all. The bass comes with a high quality fitted gig bag with shaped foam. You can find more information about the bass in general here: http://www.basscentre.com/ns-design-radius-bass-guitar/ns-design-cr5-radius-5-string-bass-charcoal-satin.html I'm happy to arrange shipping within mainland UK at additional cost (usually around £30 uninsured). I'm not currently interested in trades and the price is firm and already very reasonable so no offers please! There is a video demo I've put together below with direct recorded audio so you hear a little of how it sounds. NS Design-720p.mp4

  5. Karl Ive sent a PM but there is a potential fix you could try. Remove the truss nut and add a washer or two before putting the truss nut back on. It usually adds more adjustment to get the forward bow out. If it doesn’t quite work, add another washer - it should help and almost solve it completely. Cheers Vin

  6. I play lots of songs that were originally recorded on double bass and 80% of the rest were recorded on a 4 string bass. I have never once thought, "I shouldn't be using a 5 string electric bass on this!" IMO it doesn't matter what instrument the original song was recorded on. You're the one playing the song/tune, so play it how you want. As Al says, there are very few "life changing" moments in bass playing, so little steps is the way of things. My move to 5's just meant I could play everything on the same bass. I played in an originals band and all the bass lines were written for 5 string. All the covers worked on a 5 string, where quite a few wouldn't have worked on a 4 string. For me moving to a 5 sting bass was the most positive thing I've done in 25 years. You've got to play what feels comfortable but please don't do the "Jaco only needed 4" thing!!! Just my 2p

  7. I already figured out how to make an led blink at various speeds controlled by a potentiometer. That's way more than I expected on day one! Tbh the task seems alot less daunting now I have a basic understanding of how arduino works. It's really easier than you might think. Thisevening I'm planning to hook up the stepper motors.

  8. Nor does one need that sort of money. Sure it's nice to have nice basses but the standard of the lower priced basses these days is phenomenal. I've been eyeing up an Ibanez Talman short scale to use as a piccolo bass, the reviews look/sound amazing and it's only £150. I gigged for a year with a bass that only cost me £40 when I had other much more expensive basses. That Sire could be the only bass you'll ever need, but you'll end up buying more 😉

  11. I'm sure there used to be a thread on this once upon a time, but I may be mistaken as I can't find it. I'm sure a lot of members here are doubling down on their video skills at the moment with a bit more free time, I'm subscribed to a few of you but it'd be fun to see more and put some names to some faces/hands! I'd be very happy to keep this first post updated with a list (feel free to message me if I miss you out). In these tricky times I'm sure everyone would appreciate views and subscribers (I know I would!), and I'd certainly be up for signing up to anyone here. 12. Hello everyone...Glad to be a part of things here. I play mostly Fender Precisions...Fretted and Fretless and I prefer Ampeg amps. My music of choice would be close to fusion jazz and soul but I'm currently playing in a classic rock band..hoping to get back to the stage after the corona virus goes away. Anyway, thanks for having me!

  14. Same here. I found some 5 string basses that were really nice, especially that Lakland 55-02, I really liked that one. The thing is I never found a situation where I absolutely needed a 5 string. Yeah, occasionally I wanted the additional lower note, but it was never a deal breaker that I couldn't do without. Yeah, some songs were a lot easier to play being able to move across strings... but not impossible to play otherwise. Then I find myself not using specific basses just because they are 4-string, despite the fact that they sounded better, to me. So no... eventually I went back to 4-strings, several times. Maybe one day I'll find a 5-string bass that I like better than anything else and that will be it, but until then I don't feel like choosing an instrument based on the number of strings.

  15. In all of my previous neck through builds, I have glued the rear wings to the neck, sorted the cable channels, etc, and then added the top. This sort of thing: The big disadvantage - particularly with the equipment (and skills!) I have, I find it very difficult to get the gluing area completely flat. And it does need to be completely flat, otherwise the edges of the top are liable to end up with gaps. So this time, I'm going to do it the other way round - glue the top to the neck blank and then add the prepared wings. So first, I needed to add the demarcation stripe between the top and the back. I'm using standard maple veneer: Although it's only 0.6mm thick, it does show through well and is one of those things that always adds a bit of extra class to any build. The back wings to through-neck joint will have the same feature. Then, because I am weird and I use the top as my routing template for the back (although I may well not use a router on this one at all), I filed and sanded the tooling marks off the edge and brought it to its final shape and then glued and clamped it onto the neck: Next job will be preparing the backs. Stay safe and thanks for looking

  16. Here's a clip of humble attempt from a couple of months back, playing it with Mr. Nail and Christopher Fairbank (Y'know, him off Guardians of the Galaxy). I got away with it, but having Guy's video to refer to beforehand would have saved me a lot of heartache. ha ha.

  17. Loads of great ideas & advice, thanks guys. If it's still here after the weekend I'm going go try a couple of the suggestions, nowt to lose, possibly a lot to gain. You know that bass that don't work properly, you sit it in the corner out of the way but you can FEEL it looking at you 😆

  20. Hi! For sale beautiful Fbass BN5 from 2000. Bass is in very good condition. No deep scratches or cracks in the lacquer on the body. Realy small cracks of the polish on the head but it's hard to show in the picture. Original Fbass (by Gotoh) tuners replaced by another Gotoh model. Very rare, beautiful three-piece neck. In reality, the color is more beautiful and deeper with a pronounced wood structure, but that's all my camera can do. Original gigbag Fbass included. Feel free to ask on PM. I enclose two short movies recorded on this bass. Price: £2500 €2750

  21. I've been watching Ben's guitar build videos a lot recently, beacuse it's so good to see a master craftsman at work, and he's a good presenter. Now, for the first time, he's doing a bass biuld. A P-bass from scratch, with interesting choices of materials. Now seriously considering whether I can afford to go one one of his courses.... Enjoy !

  27. We always had music on in the house when I was growing up. My late mum was a huge fan of The Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones and also gave me an appreciation of big band stuff and Frank/Dean etc. What did I give her back? She loved Cheap Trick and Kiss. My dad loved Doris and also loved Hall & Oates and The Carpenters. The Doris Day Christmas Album is essential listening any time of year too. Her voice is velvet.

  29. No fear- I think if Jaco were alive today he would be out playing Thundercat on a six string bass! The whole way folk on Internet forums self justify their preferences by demening others choices is lame. There are some circumstances where 5's are the instrument of choice isn't there? I imagine if I were doing covers, or theatre gigs, or some whole genre I think 5 string would be the first option wouldn't it? ( Is the plural of genre, genre or genres? ) I'm super lucky to have such a great 5 string to learn on, and part of my "er is this for me" is probably feeling guilty at having a few pretty awesome basses that far surpass my skill level. I guess if I say - 'this is for me' then this 5 should be the first bass I reach for and the first bass to get played out.... but I'm still working out if it is.

  30. Sire V7 (or the V3 if you want to keep a few quid back). I've got a Sire V7, one of the first 1000 that got signed, it's great and won't be going anywhere, and that's despite the fact I gave up playing bass 18 months ago (I literally haven't touched a bass since leaving my last band). I've also got a Squier P bass, which I love to bits, but the Sire walks all over the Squier. The Sire walks all over a Mex Fender to be honest. They are good. All the best

  31. I remember recording bass/drums/rhythm guitar in one take and selecting the track that had the best feel rather than the most perfect. Of course if there was a track with both that would be chosen but back in the 80s there was still the thought of getting the best feel to the track (well in sone studios anyway).

  32. So I now have a top glued to the neck. Quick check that everything is still square - both on the neck/top assembly and the mahogany. And an orientation of the grain: The upper back - that doesn't have any cable routs or control chamber stuff - then is cut to a 4mm oversize shape, a strip of maple is glued to the join face and then the 'you can't have too many clamps' ritual Note the side clamps to secure the join with the neck, the central blue clamp and caul to get the side fully home and then the smaller clamps and curved protective cauls to ensure that the side joins are fully gap-free. That's enough for today. It's Saturday. A weekend Gin beckons... Wonder what's on for tomorrow - or pretty much the same

  34. My short-scale journey started with a couple of '70s Gibson Les Paul Triumph basses back in the day and has led via various SGs and stuff from Maruszczyk, Squier, Ibanez, Spector and ACG to this unique pair. You may already have seen the build diaries AndyJr posted. The natural walnut 'Mervyn' came first (re-bodied Fender Rascal) and has been my main gig bass ever since - I just love it to pieces. The more recent black 'back-up' started with the original left-over Rascal body that Andy re-shaped and used as the basis for a Merv clone. While both are probably keepers (Merv certainly is), I've still got a few s-s boxes to tick. The obvious ones are a Fender Mustang and a Warwick RB Corvette - although more recent stuff such as the SBMM Ray are finding their way onto the s-s bass bucket list.

  35. The wisdom in that statement is to do with what sort of basses the Yamahas and Sadowskys you've got / recently had are. And they are mostly (taken in the round) P-J configuration. Just sayin'! So, in my books, there's only going to be one bass that is going to trump the OP's Sire V7 in that price bracket and that's the Sire P7. Gratuitous pic...

  36. 😂😂 I ended up with an ex girlfriend at Heaton park in Manchester at an oasis gig 2008 ish. I was a lot more scared there being the only one with an Essex accent when Liam decided to rant and rave about southerners being let in and a pie and mash stall shouldn’t be there (apparently it’s a southern thing). Trust me I wanted to go to Hyde park a lot more!! 😂

  40. What is the relief of the neck like? As if its OK with the rod where it is, could you not just shim the neck? I take it the truss rod doesn't move? . Just a thought that might save such a big loss!

  41. Take a look at an app called Acapella. The first band member records the lead part as a video on their phone, then the others play along individually and record their parts in the app. When tbeybare done the app stitches it together, you can apply a bit of basic eq and pan, and then download and share the video. It's not a Trevor Horn mix, but OK for what it is, fun for practicing, and you can keep posting for your followers.

  43. Ah, now, you're talking! Bear in mind much of the bass of Paul Simon is by Baikithi Kumalo. Who plays unlined fretless bass. Which is not quite as hard as it sounds. Which would put you in a tiny very cool percentage of bassists, and can be acquired for just £199 new. The Revelation RPB-65 IMHO matches the Squier for build quality. And may be bought from Bass Gallery, the hippest bass store in London. There you go. Case solved. Next... [PS Revelation also do basses with stabilisers, or frets as they're called, if you still mean to go down that road. But if you can afford it, I would agree the Sire is the best all round solution]

  45. I've always loved Thumbs. Great looking, great sounding and nice to play. I never found the ergonomics and issue and in fact, generally found them to be quite pleasant to hold and wear. Those curved edges are so nice to handle and play over. In a world where many basses are a pastiche of other ideas or an outright copy, the Thumb still really does it's own thing.

  46. Thanks for that. I've actually been surprisingly smitten by my recent purchase of the Tech 21 VTBassDi (after my singular disappointment with the somewhat polite BDDI a couple of years back) - it's such a versatile preamp and some of the clean settings really bring the bass tone to life - it feels similar in effect to the zing of a fresh set of strings compared to old dead ones. And that's before you head into the warm tube and the full on dirt its capable of. It's decade old tech now, but continues to be one of the most popular Tech 21 pedals and I can understand why!

  47. Well that was entertaining. A few technical issues, but the basic principle of meeting over VC is sound, and people seem to want to do it again. Tech Notes: - Teams only lets you see four people on screen. Not a major problem, Skype does the same, but requires a bit of management of the meeting Users should change their name as displayed in their profile settings, otherwise it picks up the first part of their email address. Having a Microsoft account is a prerequisite. Again not a major problem but it wasn't made clear Cameras vary in quality, but all are better than mine. My phone was better than my PC, and actually wasn't a bad experience to join on Audio was OK, and it is possible to DI a bass into the audio. Everyone has to explicitly hang up to end the meeting. Tech Question: Do we want to try this over Skype as an alternative? Other Notes: Only @nickmew had wine, which made the rest of us terribly jealous @jebroad's mini bass is even smaller in real life than it appears in photographs. Tom's african build 2 is going to be fab! Fan frets are clearly in this year I'm happy to organise another one, with an open invitation to all members. In which case I think we would have a more specific agenda. I'm happy to have another test run with Skype if we think more people will readilly have that and therefore the startup time is reduced. (Zoom isn't an option if I'm organising, it's invasive and insecure) Honest comments please:
