Hi Harry - I started playing at 12/13, I’d say play for fun, find mates to play with and enjoy it. Listen to all types of music no matter how ‘uncool’ it may be. Be patient - I remember someone telling me in 1998 “you never stop learning” - and they were right. Practice - but spend time listening. Wish I’d learned to listen earlier instead of just hearing... Basschat is an amazing resource, I’ve been here 11 years nearly. Some of the people I’ve met through here have become good friends - but there’s an absolute wealth of knowledge and wisdom to go at. When posting for advice - explain where you’re up to and the good folk here will guide you. Enjoy playing bass though - it’s been a real door opener for me, and continues to be so. take care dude - look forward to seeing you post 👍🏼4 points

Apologies if this has been posted before. I just came across it yesterday, and was fascinated by it. It seems to be the actual recording. Comparing it with a tab I have from an old Guitar World's Bass Guitar, it matches note for note. You can also hear studio bleed at various points, making me think it's the real deal. I've seen a few threads about isolated bass tracks, and how the final mix often makes the bass track seem wildly different. Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like Nate Watts was playing a bass with terrible action.3 points

Moving on my bass gear and reluctantly selling on my custom COG Effects pedals, owned from new. All featuring funky 'op-art' designs: "Waves" Custom Grand Tarkin Bass Fuzz "Zig Zag" Custom Dual Knightfall Distortion "Screwball" Custom T-65 Octave (inc. 'Y' cable) All featured here on the COG Effects custom page I'm asking £100 each (£250 for all three) postage included. Thanks Stuart3 points

Some folks here are happy with just one bass, whilst others have collections that will leave you wide eyed with wonder (it certainly works on me). For my part, I have 4 basses, one Rob Allen MB2 and three Maruszczyks (a P type, a J type and a fretless MM type). This year I made a conscious decision to play predominantly fretless and my Maruszczyk fretless has been my main stay, go to bass since then. As mentioned above, BC is a dangerous place for Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) - BEWARE! 😂3 points

Have a look at my kits, all with screw terminals for your pick ups, bridge earth and any screening wires.3 points

How does the neck on the 79 compare to the 77 ? Just picked up a 77 and its cracking with the shallower neck really good3 points

Hi Harry, I didn’t pick up a bass until I was 31 and do wish I’d started around your age! I can only echo what Andy says above, especially about listening to all types of music, I play some songs I’d never have thought of listening to ... Most of all have fun and plenty of practice! 😃👍🏻3 points

So the final part of my Corona Virus-no work for months and have equipment I need to sell is: The one that pains me the most! My own made fretless bass! I also have pictures of the build process too if the new owner is interested! The parts cost me over £700 for everything including the wood! Before we get offf to pictures the specs are as follows: Flame Olive Ash hollowed out body, 4a Quilt with a bit of spalt Maple top, Hard Rock Maple neck, Bubinga board, Bone nut, Generic lightweight tuners, Hipshot Kickass bridge, Bartolini Jeff Berlin soapbar pickups, Volume, Volume, Tone controls. The burst isn't as light as the pictures show and is more gradual, it has to be seen! The neck is a slight V shape on the supper side so your thumb follows this and makes it ultra smoothe and quick. I put some Rotosound Tru-bass nylon strings on it as it gives that hollow bounce and with the fretless, sounds like a crossover instrument! I'll let the pictures do the talking but they really don't show how amazing this bass is! I may be willing to trade... depending on what it is! BigJim2 points

Looks like not too many 235 owners on here. But frankly I'd be gobsmacked if you found it to be anything other than a very well put together bass and excellent value. I guess we're going to need hear back from you rather than vice versa!2 points

Time for an update, albeit a temporary one. Left to right. My Stingray, Sterling Sub and Aria Pro 2 SB600 fretless. The last 2 are being looked after as my friend is off to Spain. Another Aria Pro 2 with a through neck (not sure which model) and a Marcus Miller Fender Jazz. I'm really digging The Jazz. Never really tried one for any length of time but this is amazing. The neck is fantastic. Not tried it through my rig yet, only my headphones but sounds good. Shame we aren't gigging as it would be there! This is fueling my GAS!2 points

Monday again, so time for a just-about-competently-played bass line quiz from me. This time it's 1990 to 1999, same format as last time in that there's one line per year. You'll need good speakers for 1998! Answers at the end of the video, hope you enjoy it. There's going to be a break for a week or so after this as I'm doing a David Bowie specific quiz along the same lines for one of my bands social media pages (the Bowie covers band oddly enough), and it's a big job including more than a few parts I don't know.2 points

I’ve added a few new patches to the file share site today. Hope you enjoy them.2 points

Not at all! 🙂 Spectors do rule, at least for me. I have some other great basses from other makers which I enjoy but I'll always get back to square one. This pic was taken this morning after finishing a long recording session yesterday. Ever since I got this NS-5XL a few years back this is my main recording bass ( I'm too protective to take for most of my gigs)2 points

Hi Harry. Welcome I was playing ( well making a noise on) a bass I bought from Woolworths ( ask your grandad what a Woolworths is 😉 ) when I was your age . It cost £29.00 and was worth about 29p It was all I knew though so I soldiered on . Your basses should last you a long time buddy.....take no notice of these people on here about buying basses...they haven't even worked out which one is best for metal yet!2 points

Some of you probably saw the Sei jazz that was built for Randy hope Taylor, up for sale recently! its now in my possession and very nice it is! As expected of a Sei, it’s a great bass, sounds and plays really like you would expect! Owned a good few Jazz basses in my time, but VT VT is a first for me, do prefer VVT, so that may be first upgrade!2 points

Good call. You can't go wrong with those two, good solid basses both. L-R: bitsa P bass (modified since pic), Thunder 1-A, Shuker custom 5-string, Sire V7 5-string, bitsa 'Ray-ish fretless, Ibanez BTB 6-string. Missing from pic: Wal Pro 2-E. (PS. just in case you didn't know... 'bitsa' is a common term that refers to a bass that has been home-built from parts, i.e. made up from 'bitsa this and bitsa that' )2 points

The first time these have all been together. Back row: Westone 1A Thunder ('Tiger Bass'); Gretsch Junior Jet II; Aria Pro II Magna; Challenge violin bass (21st present in 1996 ); PRS Kingfisher: Front row: Squier VM Jazz; Kit build Precision ('Il Pavone'); Yamaha BB434.2 points

Okay, volume up! Couple of faves to start the week off: Lloyd Charmers "Have I Sinned" - it's sweet 70's pop reggae really, but the bassline and tubular bells elevate it to greatness for me 😎 ...then some Brazilian business - Orquestra Brasileira De Música Jamaicana "Dub Manifesto" ...and a bit of old school Sly Dunbar with Robbie Shakespeare, one of my favourite basslines, so much space 😎 Enjoy yer Monday everybody!2 points

Hi Harry and welcome I echo everything this lot have already said. Also -- play along with stuff, no matter where you hear it. I remember seeing an interview with Billy Sheehan where he said that he used to keep his bass with him even when he was watching TV, and when the adverts came on he'd play along with them. Theme tunes, likewise. Any music that cropped up, he'd pick the tune out. It's fun and it all helps.2 points

It was a struggle not to just do a full video of grunge and Roadrunner records metal as that was all I listened to in the 90's.2 points

For years and years, I heard praise that Pedulla Buzz basses were the best fretless basses on this planet - until I got one and figured that these propably are the best fretless basses on this planet. I'd be drooling all over this one If I didn't have a Hexabuzz already - especially since Pedulla stopped making basses. Guys - get one while you can!2 points

Stripped and refinished and rebuilt these basses...... This started as a slab of ash, currently carving some curves into it so it will be a lighter, contoured 51 P to be finished in natural. This will become something - not sure what yet.....2 points

Echoing some of the points above - not all great players are even mediocre teachers. I’ve learned (or rather, not learned) the hard way - taking a run of eye wateringly expensive lessons with a big name player. Monster live player with global gigs, and although in person he was a great hang - I learned hardly anything. Teaching is a hugely underestimated skill. To twist the old adage, just because someone can do, doesn’t mean they can teach.2 points

A bit of an outing for my Rob Allen bass during lockdown. I wanted to try out some delays and heavy modulation on Alto sax and flute. Tune is called 'Float. Link is here :2 points

For me there's no doubt about it that Mark Smith's Talking Bass site is the one to go to. https://www.talkingbass.net/ Unlike some (ahem Davie 504) he's not about showing what he can do although he's a master of the instrument. He cuts to the chase and offers very clear explanations of how to learn certain techniques. His lessons on slap are excellent.2 points
