  1. My first Rebellion Festival was pretty special, being asked to play the biggest punk festival in world is just amazing. But the gig I’ll always remember was being asked to play for a distant friend who had cancer. We were his favourite band, we did the gig and afterwards he got up on stage to thank us, I had a lump in my throat at that point, this poor guy saying how much he’d enjoyed the evening. 3 weeks later he died. Festivals great, overseas tours great but I’ll remember playing that gig above others. Making my eyes well up typing this.

  2. Superb example of Mark's work. From Limelight: Limelight 00180 was ordered as a bit of a custom hybrid. Generally it had 1970's features ("F" neck plate with rubber bumper, plus 1970's Big TV logo with tinted headstock face and spray over the logo - we tend to tint the headstock faces a little darker on the 1970's ones as that is how they tend to go with age) The purple colour was never offered by Fender was but was ordered especially (over a white base coat - I thought it turned out pretty well) It was also ordered with both chrome covers (Genuine Fender, aged to match) and the gold anodized guard was from the 50's and an extra cost option as well. The bass was finished 9th June 2016 so just over 4 years old. It has also been fitted with a Stellartone Tonestyler which has a 10 - position knob to give you very accurate tone changes & much more flexibility especially in the mids. You can find details on Google & they are available from Bass Direct for about £110. Very comfortable to play & everything works as it should. Looks great under lights, the purple over white really stands out & it thumps like a good P-Bass should Comes with a virtually new Hiscox case, width at the nut is 38mm, weight is 4.25kg [ 9.4lb ] but doesn't feel that heavy. Don't really want to sell this but current playing conditions and advancing age mean that I need to cut down a bit on gear, so not looking for trades, there's nothing I want! Will listen to offers but please be realistic! Can ship but would prefer buyer to arrange their own courier. Have got suitable box to send it

  5. And I means moments. I was listening to Steve Ray Vaghan's 'Couldn't Stand The Weather' this afternoon and I remembered doing a gig with a band I had never played with and never rehearsed with although they played together often. The singer called CSTW and the guitar player looked at me and raised an eyebrow. I had heard the song but never played it. When we got to 'that' bar (an extended gap in the groove which is 'wrong'), I don't know where it came from but it was there. There was a lot of grinning, mainly from me because I knew I could have fallen on my derrière and didn't. I remember another time playing a 'Blue In Green' by Miles Davis/Bill Evans with a guitar player and saxophonist. We were about to play the last chord (standard V I) and the guitar player whispered 'Fmaj7#11' and the most beautiful modulation I have ever heard happened. It was a rehearsal and no-one heard it but us but I still remember the feeling more than 20 years later. Then there was the jam session about 6 years ago where the pianist called 'Beatrice' by Sam Rivers and played the SLOWEST and one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever had the honour to play. Playing 'Isfahan' with Tony Kofi and the band performing a most exquisite and beautifully tense ending entirely by intuition. Then there was that posh, middle aged lady that sat in at a wedding gig and did the most amazing 'Tina Turner' thing I have ever heard. It's not always the big things; sometimes it is just the magic of the moment. Does anyone know what I mean?

  6. I assume many people on here do. For me personally, this is often about certain chord changes I not only dreamt up there and then but even got out of my fingers - something I knew I couldn't do but then did inexplicably. There were other moments too that take too many words, but the most stellar moment was the day I played a Bach piece on the pipe organ, and exactly that day I played better, deeper and with more musical expression than I've done before or after. It became very hard to even finish the piece, and I was exhausted. That was not the moment. The moment was: unbeknownst to me, a young soprano had entered, and rather than making herself known she'd waited and listened before approaching me. When the piece was done, she came up and said: - "You know, I've always hated the pipe organ, but you just explained it to me."

  7. Done!!! So after a couple of weeks bass is finally done. It’s not perfect by any means. Electronics pretty much shi......t😂 so that would be the first thing to swap for something else (any suggestions for something decent and not so expensive? Preferably pre wired...I’m not so good with soldering) waiting for custom decal I’ve ordered (Popbass instead of Rockbass) and then...well, don’t know yet😁 ...and some pics

  10. I have just purchased another Ibanez SRH500 but this time from PMT. It was showing as in stock in their warehouse so I called and was assured this item had been stored in the warehouse unopened in its box since delivery.

  11. The new tuners arrived today! For the new neck I plan to attach, I purchased some Schaller BM tuners which came in this very nice box. The reason for selecting these tuners is because when I took off the tuners I wanted to replace, I found that another set of holes had already been drilled. I measured the dimensions and found that the Schaller BMs would be a perfect fit making my life a little easier. The neck that I plan to attach, now complete with the Schaller's, is a little special. Tusq XL nut, maple neck, Brazilian rosewood slab fingerboard, clay dots, 20 frets and 38mm width at the nut.

  14. Redundancy sadly forces the sale of my pride and joy go to fender precision bass! bass is a 1972 fender precision. Super light weight with loads of punch from the original 1972 pickups! it has been lovingly refinished in lake placid blue over Olympic white it is all original except for the following 1) scratch plate/pic guard 2) brass nut and 3) Potts and Jack socket, although I have the original Pots and Jack socket and these will go with the bass. it will be shipped in a good quality repro Fender tweed hard case anywhere in the EU at buyers cost. viewing encouraged and welcome following social distancing rules of course. further photos available upon request. NO TRADES!

  15. 2006 (Z6 serial) Fender Jazz with S1 switch. Shoreline Gold. Maple neck. Comes with the original Fender hard case. I got this in a trade with doctorbass on Basschat a few years ago but the time has come for me to move it on: I am not really looking for trades but I would consider a decent 6-string acoustic (as long as it does not have a narrow nut). Very good condition – when I bought it doctorbass was very clear about condition and said “It’s got one very small ding on the top front edge of the headstock and a tiny one on the back of the neck which is one of those you can feel if you are looking for it and lightly run a finger over it.” I have checked it over and can’t find any other knocks or dings anywhere – and the ones Mark mentions are very minor. I don’t have scales but I would rate it as mid-weight: sorry if that isn’t too helpful – I will see if I can track down some scales to give a better idea. The straplocks I fitted have been taken off and the originals put back on – there are a few bits of case candy. Other, older photos are also available – if you want any more, just let me know and I will email them Let me know if you have any questions – happy to add info if it is needed. Neil

  16. Well, it's not quite a NBD as I've had it over a week now and wanted to get to grips with it before saying anything. Anyway, I saw this on guitarguitar at a decent price a couple of weeks ago and pulled the trigger. I'd been eyeing up a jazz for a few months and was thinking of either the G&L or a classic vibe Squire and have to say that I'm really glad I went with G&L. It's a lot of bass for not a lot of money. I managed a socially distanced jam on Friday so got to crank it up to decent volumes and loved hearing that jazz honk! My only gripe sound wise is that the tone knob is a bit on/off, but I'll live with it for a while and if it's a bother I'll give ki0gon a shout. The neck is erm....... a jazz neck, so you know where you are with it. I had played the blue version with a Brazilian Cherry board in Andertons and thought it may be a bit chunkier than the maple? I could well be remembering that wrong, but either way it's a joy to move around. I really like lacquered/finished necks and there's a nice grain to the maple too. I've never owned a sunburst bass before and really like the 70s look with the black guard and blocks. The grain in the body is well matched and its not as red as the pics show. If I was to be really picky there's a few blemishes in the binding and a couple of dot markers that look to be cut in half (tried to show them in the pics below), but nothing to worry about and nothing you'd notice unless you were looking for it. All in all I'm over the moon with it and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

  18. Truss rod sorted. Thanks guys for all your tales and remedies. I was working in the garage today with my hand belt-sander when I remembered something else to do with it. I tapered the end of an Allen key/wrench down as squarely as possible. Unscrewed and lifted the neck of my old Encore E 83. Rod turned first time. 3/4 turn did the trick. Brilliant result. Thanks the poster who suggested this method.

The Bass has Aguilar DCB pups and a OBP-3SK / PP system preamp, the body consists of mahogany and burned maple. The neck is cherry, maple and padouk. It’s equipped with jumbo frets on Ziricote fingerboard. It is 32” very comfortable , especially for players with small hands Bridge Hipshot. Machine heads are Hipshot Ultralite It's condition is almost mint - some scraches at the bottom of the body. I will ship internationally with hard case The price including hard case and shipping to EU. Payment via Paypal preferred Thanks Pawel

  29. Finished in black, non export model. MIJ in 2008 and in very good condition, owned by me from new. Non original bridge pick up, Entwistle JBX - J fitted. I have a Hiscox hard case for sale for £25. Located in Stevenage Herts. No trades. I would prefer collection from Stevenage but could post at extra cost and risk to the buyer.

  30. Last week I got the new 4k version of the Blues Brothers, which has 5.1 surround sound Pleased to report that whoever mixed the sound has (perhaps lazily) put the bass through just the middle speaker in the set up, while the other instruments are spread around the rest of the speakers in the room. What this means is that because the middle speaker is typically the loudest (because that's where most of the dialogue goes, and I tend to tweak it a bit louder to help with mumbling actors) the bass is literally front and centre on everything. Gloriously loud! Biggest revelation for me was that the bass doesn't play all the notes in the Peter Gunn riff, and in fact is playing some quite interesting variations Thoroughly recommended

  32. I'm baaaaack! The first two pictures are me showing off. Obviously everyone else can hand plane a square face on a bit of wood, but I'm new enough to it to still be pleased by it, so tough! So having learnt from doing the legs that cutting the slot for the scissor mechanism after you've glued the leg blank is a pain in the derriere I'm doing them before applying any glue. I've screwed the strips together and once it's ready I'll use one of the strips as a template and drill for dowels. I don't think it'll need them, something else will break before the chop gets anywhere near it's limit. Hacking the hole out. I cut the ends and then a series of slots for splitting into. I'm not sure why they all lean though, I thought I was being careful with the saw. The end ones are fine, which are the important ones. I also went shopping to increase my tool stable. 4 chisels from vintagetoolshop.com, they look like they've been used to open paint tins or something, they're all rounded off and a router plane from eBay.

  39. For those like me who had a hard time with the A, B, C, D, V, U tyupe of neck : As to the letter designations, "A", "B", "C" and "D". These were stamped on the end of the necks from the early 1960s to about 1973 and refer to the neck width at the nut - not the shape. A = 1½" B = 1⅝" C = 1¾" D = 1⅞" ANd then you have the profiles U, Soft V, HArd V, C and D. Kind of my dream PBass here, especially with the refin (or was it originally refin ? ) but I love C nut on my P-Bass...

  40. Sounds fine to me through headphones. Great bass tone. I hear reasonable low end there, but with enough clank to cut through 3 guitarists and a drummer. Job done.... Maybe those who hear no low end aren't listening back on the right device..

  42. This is how to measure a bridge placement copy pasted from my ‘files’ Bridge placement 34” for reference this is for a 34" scale 4-string bass: * if you want to protect the finish from scratches/nicks, not is the time to cover it with something like blue painting tape or similar * insert the neck into the neck pocket and clamp it into place. be careful not to squash your frets with the clamp and clamping fressure * using a long straight edge, draw a line from the neck to the body butt for each side of the neck. accurately measure from the last fret position about 3" on each line. do this again for a reference measurement that is near the butt end of the body * accurately connect each pair of measurements to their counterpart on the other line * accurately measure the center point of each connecting line, and then draw a line thru these two points - extend the line from the end of the neck to the butt end of the body. if you were accurate in all of your steps so far, you now have an accurate reference of where the centerline of the neck passes thru the body. this is critical for your strings to be aligned on the neck properly * measure from the nut back 34" to obtain your theoretical 34" scale reference. accurately draw a line perpendicular to the centerline thru this point. extend the line several inches on each side of centerline * determine the forward most travel of your bridge's saddles, move it back 1/16", and measure the distance from the string witness point on the saddle to the front edge of the bridge. draw a line parallel to the scale reference line (towards the neck side of the line) this same distance. you now have the front edge aligned for the bridge. * measure the width of the bridge and draw a pair of lines parallel to the centerline that each are half the bridge with away. now you have your bridge aligned side-side I know this seems like a lot of work, but it's really not that difficult. it's critical to measure and draw accurately, as any slop will easily be seen every time you look at the bass. it's also important to note that the strings will always intonate longer than the 34" scale, not less, and thicker strings will intonate farther than thinner strings. because of this, only the G string will be relatively close to 34" ... the others may be as much as 34-3/8" from nut to witness point all the best,

  43. It’s a whole big bag of cliches, but my daughter (4) likes this song so I sometimes play along with it while she’s dancing. The bass player here is a monster and doing a great job. I certainly can’t play it cleanly and with the confidence he does. And he plays keyboard too!

Can’t plug her in yet, little ones decided they wanted to sleep the gits!!! anyway, her she is pre-proper finishing... thank you @Andyjr1515 for the sterling filling/routing work and anyone else that has given advice to help me finish technically, my first bass build (please excuse the wayward cat fluff in the the pictures) now to finish my ‘51 slab precision build...onwards and upwards as they say...
