  1. Plus one to the utter rubbish of referring to one's bass as 'she'. I'm not sure if it's more sexist, creepy or plain weird. Makes my skin crawl. (Same in the case of those idiots who refer to boats, ships and cars as 'she'.) Whenever I've referred to my basses as 'he' in revenge, I've been immediately corrected - bl**dy foreigner that I am - and told it's IT in English, not HE. Oh, really? 🤦‍♀️ Short scale only for wimmin - heard that, never took any notice. BUT: - Petite lady? Get a Jazz bass, the neck is lovely and thin, you'll be fine. (Forget about the horrible, misshapen, heavy-as-hell body, though, will you). Heh.

  3. EDIT - 100% original made in the US Suhr bass, you can check talkbass for more info on these, superb jazz basses, top of the line. Got this recently, my first jazz in 15 years of playing:) I love the sound, I love the neck, but long story short, my right hand can't get to terms with the offset jazz bass body. And my wrist has started aching in the seated position. It is honestly a heck of a jazz bass, at least on par with us sadowsky and lull.(not my opinion, but from a couple of friends with such instruments and experience). EDIT - Amazing sound on this, sustain, warmth, definition, attack, growl, punch, you name it. No discernible usual fender dead spots. Alder body quilted maple top one piece maple neck and fretboard 20mm bridge string spacing, 38mm nut Slim neck front to back, very nice suhr single coils suhr electronics (bass, mid, treble) volume/volume(pull for passive) - no passive tone, you have to lower the volumes for decreased treble response. badass bridge 4 kg mint condition balances perfectly seated and standing. 1990 pounds shipped to EU and UK. It comes with it's mint violin hard case. more images here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-W53C-hh5XY2AkuenyJsE7C5_nQNVLwv?usp=sharing thank you.

  4. Just as an update. Got a full refund from Reverb and I was told that if the bass ever did turn up to just either refuse it or, if I wanted to keep it, to get back in touch with them so they can help me pay for it again. They said that as the seller hadn't communicated either with me or with them they assumed that the bass had never been given to a courier in the first place so they would refund me straight away. Hoping the bass doesn't now show up (though it was a rather lovely one Thank you for all your comments and advice. Looks like Reverb and PayPal are used to this kind of thing and can sort things out pretty quickly once they've been made aware of the situation. Now just got to look for another bass to take it's place

  7. Hey folks! Had a bit of a tinker yesterday and made myself a bass mute. Works really well I have to say! Had an offcut of Auralex foam in the shed from an isolation pad I made a few years ago, cut it to size, cut a piece of softwood to size and painted black, glued them together and cut slits in the foam.

  16. George, darling, I thought we’d agreed that the George and Mildred soubriquets were only to be used on those ‘special’ evenings that, sadly, have been stolen from since this cursed corona wotsit forced us all into lockdown? But you make a good point - our guitar chap has both a Helix and, er, the other one - can’t remember it’s name, not a kemper anyway - and he really likes them. So now I have a quandary. Option one. Play songs in such a way that a fiver is not needed. Option two. Retune one of the less-used basses in the stable to BEAD and hope there’s no need to climb up to the G string (oo-er, missus). Option three. By an inexpensive fiver with narrower string spacing to see if that works. Option four. Get a fancy floor unit such as Osiris describes and pitch shift the problem away. Option five. All of the above in stages over the next few months. Given my propensity for GAS (which has kept many BC members furnished with high-quality, barely-used basses and amps at knock-down prices for several years now), I think we can all see where this is going to end up, can’t we boys and girls?

  18. Look what arrived yesterday - My long-awaited Spector Forte 4 in Trans Black Satin. It is a custom order that is modelled on a NS 4. It comes with 2 EMG 35DCX humbucker pickups, 3 knobs (volume, blend, stacked bass and treble), and the HAZ 18V preamp. It differs from a NS 4 by having swamp ash wings, no fancy tops, no high gloss finish and no inlays. It is pretty much a no-frills version of the NS 4. As I do not own and have never played a NS 4, I do not know how close it comes to the original. However, what I do know is that the sound is huge (sorry, neighbours 😉 and it nicely complements my other Spector basses. Big shout-out to Mark and Ash at Bass Direct for making it happen!

  19. Mildred my dear, or may I call you Skinnybabes? Anyway, I see you've listed your Magellan (you'll regret that) and are now DI'ing into the PA. I'm going to suggest that you bin the idea of a 5 string altogether and get something like a Helix Stomp instead. Not only will you have a ton of amp and cab models for DI'ing straight into the PA but there's a number of options in there such as the Simple Pitch block that does a very convincing pitch shifting for lower (or upper if that's your thing) tunings. I was using a Stomp with the last band who were on IEM's and used the Simple Pitch for anything lower than an E, it worked a treat and nobody noticed that I was cheating, not even the keys player who was very picky about things sounding right. The Stomp will work out much cheaper than a decent 5 string, will allow you to continue to use your current basses and will also give you a tuner, compressor, HPF and a shed load of other toys in one box. More importantly it has lots of bright coloured LED's on it.

  26. Stunning Vigier Bass in Clear Red. In great condition apart from a little buckle rash and a few very minor dings. Graphite strip in neck which is really silky fast to play. 18V actives, 2 EQ with massive tonal range. Looking to sell but may be tempted to trade for a recent Elite Precision.

  27. Ok so I bang on about compression too much I know, but this tutorial here actually shows a few things I keep on about really well. Namely compression is only evident within the context of a mix, and it doesn't wreck your dynamics. Now this is all very much from the perspective of s mix engineer, but honestly, that's how you should be thinking about compression anyway. Enjoy 🤩

  29. A myth oft held by the non-musician public..... that if you play bass you automatically like any music featuring a famously busy or prominent bass player such as Level 42 or Red Hot Chili Peppers. And if you are a beginner bass player, to recommend those same bass players (e.g. Mark King, Flea) as role models to whom you can aspire..... regardless of your musical tastes or genre.

  30. Possibly, but there's very little bass content above 10kHz even with single coils, and what's above 15kHz you probably can't hear anyway unless you're a teenager. Most start around 3.5-4kHz. I run mine down to at least 2.5kHz, because ten and twelve inch woofers don't have useful off-axis response above that.

  34. I echo all the above. They are right up there with Spector in terms of customer relations. I am currently talking to them about a new bass and have troubled them with several iterations so far. Nothing appears to be too much trouble.

  38. I mentioned this thread to Mrs Rich in passing yesterday, after she saw me video-hopping through youtube and asked what I was doing... I told her about my vague idea in the past of this 80s indie/rock band, and far from the expected "where would you find time for that?" she said "ooh! why don't you do it?". Hmm.

  39. I saw "The Commitments" (only 2 of the original lot were in the band, including the guy who was the mad drummer in the film but was now doing lead vocal, and not much cop at that sadly) some years ago... the bassist was playing an Alembic Mark King with a huge Trace stack, and yes he took a slappy solo. I do remember looking at my watch a few times.

  40. Was a bloke at my local open mic night that used to turn up and do All Right Now every week on a really flash active 5 (possibly 6) string. It was a dark honey translucent finish multi ply thru neck with figured wood. It always thought it was a bit inappropriate when he turned on the LED position markers for the interlude.🤮 I think the original was played on an SG bass, although Andy later switched to something a bit more exotic looking.

  41. I just got one of these. Highly recommended. Well put together and very unusual for a 1960s bass (200 made 1963-64). Has a more modern tone due to the combination of 35" scale (has to be the first production instrument with this) and the very unusual pickup placement for that era - further back than a P-bass and almost getting to the Stingray position giving it a pretty pronounced midrange. Wonderful slim neck profile. The bridge is crazy and unlike any other I've seen but still fully adjustable. I just finished doing a bit of fret work on it and it plays perfectly with quite low action. Also light and very comfortable - does neck dive a bit - more that it likes to sit horizontally - doesn't go to the floor. Not a big deal to me and worth the compromise though I know that's a deal breaker for some.

  42. One small, nit-picky point... People talk about bank to bank transfers and use the term “BACS” but, for consumer to consumer transfers such as we now do using online banking, the payments go through the Faster Payments System (FPS). It’s a small point but there is a significant difference. A BACS transfer can (theoretically) be cancelled before the money gets to you. An FPS transfer can’t. In most cases a Faster Payments transfer hits your account immediately and is non-repudiable. If the sender wants to cancel they have to get their bank to raise a request from your bank and is a load of protracted hassle that a scammer wouldn’t want to get into. Sometimes - and I had this recently - a payment can take up to two hours to be credited by the receiving bank. Up to that point, it could be rejected. In my case, we figured that a large amount of money from the buyer’s account to a new payee (me) had flagged up on the bank’s fraud/AML systems and the transaction had ended up on somebody’s queue to check on. As it was a BC member with good feedback I was, in this case, prepared to let him take the bass but be aware that a payment that has been sent can still be rejected (if the banks suspect fraud for example). Only once it’s received into your account is it safe. The latest version of FPS being rolled out insists on a verification of the account holders name before it makes the transfer which adds an extra level of verification. Sorry. Just realised I’ve been rambling. It’s an age thing. Has the drinks trolley been round yet?
