Every little thing she does is magic? Lucky she wasn't born in the 14th century then, or she'd have been burned as a witch.10 points

No, Alanis, rain on your wedding day is not ironic. Nor are any of the other examples in your song, they're simply examples of misfortune. Irony is writing a song called "Ironic" while not understanding what "ironic" means.8 points

Dunno why but in the last hour naff pop tune The Lion Sleeps Tonight has been worming its way into my ear. This is a song that peddles misinformation inferring that lions live in the jungle but as any fule kno, the habitat of lions is grassland, savannah, dense scrub and open woodland. Open woodlands are no jungle tho'! Now if they'd sung 'in the jungle... the tiger/panther/jaguar sleeps tonight' that would've been better. Fleetwood Mac are woefully ignorant of the fact that thunder often happens during dry conditions and not just when it's raining. The lyric should read 'Thunder often occurs when it's raining'. What other song lyrics are factually incorrect5 points

And back again: I put in the money and pull out a plum To the best of my recollection such vending machines as were to be found on LU stations in the late 1970's dispensed confectionery, not fresh fruit. Mr Weller strains our credulity to breaking point and beyond.5 points

Also, Weller should have specified which tube station. Imagine my surprise when I stayed for the weekend in London 20 years ago, only to discover that Notting Hill station was all locked up by 11pm.5 points

But whilst we're on science, I doubt Thomas Dolby was ever actually blinded by it, in part because a concept cannot materially affect the function of a sense organ, but also when I met him two years after that song charted it was pretty clear that his vision was fine4 points

There’s the funny old thing with Guitar/Music shops. The retailers complain about the discount merchants - so their big accounts try to resolve it. The discount merchants are in a race to make the least margin. Usually from a web store rather than shop front. The customers want top notch service and an opportunity to try before they buy...but don’t want to pay what they perceive to be over the odds. It’s a lose/lose situation for everyone. When in the trade, my colleagues and I used to tear our hair out over it. We used to have people come in and try things, ask if we’d match a price which was £4 profit on an £800 sale...was very disheartening. They’d purchase the same instrument online, and come to us when there was a problem - and then be dissatisfied with the fact that as a Fender/Gibson/Epiphone dealership, we wouldn’t sort the problems they were experiencing as warranty repair. Also that we wouldn’t resolve an issue with a Fender bought from Thomann in Germany by sending it to Fender GBI to fix...for free. The list goes on, I’m not sure that price fixing or MAP pricing is the pure evil it’s made out to be. But I’ve seen both sides.4 points

Bowie, Starman: "Some cat was layin down some rock'n'roll" Anatomically, the domestic cat simply doesn't have the reach to play an electric or bass guitar with both hands, thus the proficiency on those instruments is sadly lacking. Drums too, their body weight is unlikely to operate the bass drum pedal with sufficient force to create a suitably-loud beat necessary for the genre. And their keyboard skills......4 points

On the subject of poor grammar in songwriting, shouldn't 'Hello, is it me you're looking for?' be 'Hello, is it me for whom you're looking?'4 points

Be careful what you say because I'm still here. 😉 Anyway thanks for the kind comments. When I started back in 2004 it was to fill a need that was not being fulfilled. It was a hobby business and as such was kept very small. Since then others have grasped the opportunity to grow substantial and successful businesses out of supplying cables. I still have some stock of cables and connectors including Klotz 4-sq.mm. speaker cable, however they are packed away pending a move west which seems to be thwarted at every step.We were originally due to move in April but Covid19 put a stop to that. I must say that selling houses is a bit like snakes and ladders. Hopefully we can finally move soon. When I get settled and sorted I should be able to make the occasional custom lead should anyone need one.4 points

Unique opportunity to own one of the two basses I commissioned from our own AndyJr and featured in one of his Build Diaries on this forum. It's a 30" scale passive with 3 lippy pick-ups and seven-position switching enabling any one pup or combination to be selected quickly and easily. I had this made as a clone of the original that Andy made me but I'm letting it go as my new stock-control policy is to not keep two basses that are essentially the same. Price is collected from near J25 M5 and including quality gig bag. Not prepared to ship in gig bag but will sell in Gator hard-case for an extra £50 and pack for collection by courier arranged and paid for by buyer. I've always done set lists in Excel and being an accountant by training, assumed everyone did the same. It's the right way: it's God's way I'm led to believe The band leader and lead guitarist in one of my bands are both lawyers and insist on sending set lists out in Word. That just perverted and makes me feel quite violent towards them in a passive-aggressive way. (I tut, loudly).3 points

Ashdown's legendary world class customer service strikes again! 🙂 I emailed Dave Green to ask whether it would be possible to order a new Grill for the 410 in the same style as my 610 so they would match. Unfortunately it would need to be made specially to fit this cab so the cost would be prohibitive (Dave reckons it would be cheaper to buy a new ABM cab). I thanked him and said in that case I'd just go back to the plan to buy a new double wing badge (which is £15 on the Ashdown website) and put some piping round the grill. Got an unexpected email back from Dave asking for my address so he can send me a badge and the piping - no charge! It might only seem a little thing but I think it says a lot. I don't have anything like the profile for an official endorsement unfortunately but I'll never hesitate to sing their praises. Awesome gear and a fantastic company to deal with!3 points

Yes, but the level of scrutiny of Down in the Tube Station simply wasn't there then mate. This thread is in a different league, and will likely lead to revised thinking as to the (supposed) authenticity of Weller's lyrics; the in-depth scrutiny of inconsistencies between his lyrics and the realities of the London Underground at the time of writing presented here suggests the possibility that, at the very same time he was adopting a 'man of the people' stance in his lyrics, he might well have been luxuriating in chauffeur driven limos between Boney-M gigs at Hammersmith Palais and Weller Towers?3 points

Indeed. Also I think that, given the tube frequency at midnight, the curry going cold was a likely risk regardless of any unprovoked assault.3 points

Mike Oldfield, 'Moonlight Shadow'. A repeat offender. "Carried away by a moonlight shadow" Shadows are by definition a characteristic of light. Light, whilst being an energy, is not tangible and is certainly not capable of lifting anything, let alone carrying it. "The trees that whisper in the evening" Regardless of what time of day it is, trees do not have vocal chords. "All she saw was a silhouette of a gun" One can only assume that the gun was somehow hovering in mid-air, otherwise the silhouette of the person or thing holding it would also have been visible. The supposition is therefore that the events were occurring in an empty zero-gravity environment. "Four A.M. in the morning" Oh dear. I don't think I need comment on this any further. "Stars roll slowly in a silvery night" Nights tend to be varying shades of extremely dark blue, or even black. If they were 'silvery' the stars would not be visible against their background.3 points

Second hand vs new Seem to be more active ones about , and if you can get a good deal on a Second hand one but tinker with the electronics it makes sense as you can sell the preamp, pick ups off etc. And offset the cost. If you can spec your passive sandberg from new, and want a new bass, that’s easy enough to do as well.3 points
