  1. Young Paddy bought a donkey from a farmer for €100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day he drove up and said, 'Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkey's died.' Paddy replied, 'Well then just give me my money back.' The farmer said, 'Can't do that. I've already spent it.' Paddy said, 'OK, then, just bring me the dead donkey.' The farmer asked, 'What are you going to do with him?' Paddy said, 'I'm going to raffle him off.' The farmer said, 'You can't raffle a dead donkey!' Paddy said, 'Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead.' A month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked, ' What happened with that dead donkey?' Paddy said, 'I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at €2 each and made a profit of €898.' The farmer said, 'Didn't anyone complain?' Paddy said, 'Just the guy who won. So I gave him his €2 back.'

  3. Day 100!!!! Well I never imagined that this would go on as long as it has. I assumed that Lee would show us his bass parts for the last Phil Collins tour and that would be that. It's great to see that his channel has grown from a thing of mild curiosity to an important historical document for all musicians and fans. Lee's down to earth style, exceptional bass playing and fascinating anecdotes have kept me hooked from the start. However, this will be the last time I will post the links for Lee's videos on this thread. Thanks to everyone who has commented or liked (special thanks to @SpondonBassed for liking my posts pretty much every day!!), I hope we have have in some small part helped him build his viewer numbers. If you have been following along and want to continue to do so, I suggest you subscribe to his YouTube channel and/or sign up to his Clubhouse. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs5yDeiOgkyRZGZGphlSbIw Being the legend he is Lee has also managed to coincide his 100th day post with my birthday so I'm off to eat cake and work out what bass gear to spend my birthday money on. Bye for now, Chris / Noirbass Joe Porcoro, RIP

  4. New bundle option!! £2500 for the Moollon plus my excellent condition 2019 Noble Preamp, boxed with all leads. At the moment I will not sell the Noble separately. Or: £1500 plus a half-decent P bass (doesn't have to be Fender) Or: £1800 inc UK postage for straight sale. Phew! Now back to the description... For sale only: Moollon P classic Root Beer Sparkle, now £1800 delivered in UK only. I can also ship to EU but only with full insurance paid for by the buyer. Well, that was quick (even for me ) but it turns out I need a new bike more than I need another Precision So here for sale at the amount I bought it for is a Moollon P Classic in the premium Root Beer Sparkle finish. It was specced with the Moollon J classic neck option, 38mm nut. Gorgeous rolled fingerboard edges and a delight to play! Cosmetic marks as per photos, the main one being the scrape down to the wood near the volume pots. That's the only one visible from the front, and luckily the wood colour is similar to the tort burst on the pickguard. Comes with a tough Protec gigbag 8 lb 12 Oz / a shade under 4kg on the kitchen scales. Free courier delivery in UK only, my feedback in my signature. Cheers! Kev

  6. I fear I may have to admit that my pursuit for the ultimate jazz bass has led me down a rabbit hole. I’ve started rehearsing with a new band. New band, new bass - right? I’ve been lucky enough to own some great basses over the last 15 years or so, but I was very very happy with my new-to-me Fender Elite Jazz from 2016. I played it in a new rehearsal venue with a lovely USA made Ampeg SVT II and 4x10. The ultimate in Fender build quality into a great, vintage SVT. Tonal perfection. Next rehearsal, I thought I’d bring my well loved but often forgotten about Mexican jazz, which I’d chucked some Tonerider pickups in. I opted to use my own Markbass Evo 1 set clean through the same Ampeg 4x10 as I’d be using this head predominantly for gigging with this band. May as well see if it works. Well, it was equally great. Similar low mid mid bump as the Elite, fantastic punch and warmth. There wasn’t enough in it to choose based on sound. In all honesty, I was disappointed. My parents bought that Mexican jazz for me one Christmas and I remember it costing about £339 from GAK in 2007. The Elite cost the original owner over £2k. Don’t get me wrong, the Elite is a nicer thing to hold in your hands and to look at, but which do I feel better about leaving in a van? Or left on a stage whilst I grab a pint and a meal deal? I’m starting to think that all those naysayers, chanting about spending lots on a lovely bass makes little difference to the sound, are true. Bastards.

  7. I’ve spent most of today on YouTube having searched for ‘bass backing tracks’, and really enjoyed playing along with some old tunes, some jazzy, some I’d often wanted to know the chords etc to. Most probably everyone else on here has been doing this for years as a way of getting the practice in, and improving their technique, exploring new progressions etc, but it’s something I’ve never done before. I particularly liked playing along to Georgia on my Mind. I connected the headphone socket of my iPad to one input of my practice amp, and the bass into the other, and so easily ‘lost’ a couple of hours...... As I said, not new, but new to me, and a great way to spend a rainy day. 🤫

" At least when you buy a Lottery ticket (don't, please don't) you know how ridiculously the odds are stacked up against you, and you know the whole thing is legit and closely monitored by official watchdogs." Don't tell my Dad that. He won a substantial amount of money and so I have no mortgage.......

  10. Hi, I’ve got my 2007 CS Pino Palladino for sale. This bass is unreal. It’s been set up and stoned by the great Andy Warnock. Plays unbelievable and sounds killer. Only selling as I’ve just got an vintage Precision. £3000 ono Cheers Jack

  11. Now On Hold Great condition Maruszczyk Elwood 5a Ash body in Red Satin finish with matching headstock 34" scale 19mm string spacing 4.45kg weight Angled headstock 21 Frets plus zero fret Rosewood fingerboard with blocks & binding, Häussel JJ pickups Delano 2-band active preamp Volume and blend Passive mode on push-pull pot Wearing nearly new D'Addario XT strings Schaller strap lock buttons fitted, originals included Really nice looking, sounding and playing bass, and a reluctant sale, but I've had some wrist problems that make 5 strings a bit harder to play. I've already got it's replacement - an Elwood (Hellwood in fact) 4 string with the same pickups, I really like the sound of them. Condition is really good, I've checked it over for anything at all and all I could find was a small mark on the back where the finish has gone shiny and tiny ding in the headstock so small it was hard to photograph. There are some scratches on the scratchplate (makes sense ) and a few on the control plate but you have to get it in the right light to see them. I've done some photos of those, and other than that it's perfect. I can throw in a Maruszczyk gig bag, I do have a hard case but I'd need to replace it so that would be £30 extra. It's a good case, hardly used and deep enough for the angled headstock. I'd prefer collection or a meet up half way thing, but I can arrange a courier and pack it up properly (it would be packed better than the couriers advise) and send it insured for whatever that costs if really needed, that will probably be about £30 on top. Now £750, I might be up for trades but there aren't lots of things I'm after. One is a Sandberg Forty Eight in black with creme strips and matching headstock. If also consider a Fender P or Jazz, that is right in the middle of their respective sounds, as I've never owned either only other people's version of. You can get slightly bigger pics by clicking on the ones below.

  12. Hey I just received my new custom pickguard though the post today from Alperious Custom Pickguards based in Turkey. The design was done by Alper in direct consultation with me, with a few personalised touches including the Scottish rampant lion! Communication was stellar throughout and always kept up to date through the process which took about 3 weeks in total from first communication to delivery. As you can see his designs and execution are top notch, and the quality of materials used is excellent. Gives my Maruszczyk a nice celtic facelift. If you want to customise your bass or guitar, I would highly recommend checking Alper out. He's done work for some big names as well and you can see plenty of images of designs he's done for all different models of basses on his website: https://www.alperious.com/ I'm not affiliated in any way to him, just so chuffed with the result I wanted to make people aware !!

  23. Thanks - actually the fan noise doesn't bother me that much as when playing I have my headphones on but I do sometimes listen to music and pump the bass through the board as it sits under my office chair and feels amazing. So it could be annoying in that way. I have bought the GK 200 thing and will see if it has enough power to drive the board at the levels I tend to use (fairly low)

  29. Bogart Blackstone 5 2001 - GBP850 2001 (so still the old semi-headless design) Refinished by Bogart in 2018 34” scale 18mm spacing Bartolini soapbars Noll TCM3 preamp Graphite neck 24 frets Blackstone (polycarbon) body with dense acoustic foam - sounds like wood! Weight 4,5 kg - standard 5 string territory Just an absolute tone monster Condition is very good for a 19 year old bass, standard little cracks in neck pocket (all my Bogarts have it) due to the pocket design (square corners) of the older models. I have an email from Stefan Hess the builder confirming these cracks have been fixed (when he did the refin). Noticed some minor paint scuffing on the back. Just minor stuff otherwise. Price includes shipping with detached neck in Europe. BARGAIN!

  31. This is a wonderful sentiment and one that I’m going to carry forward. Good point, well made! Indeed, it’s always going to be a subjective thing. That’s the beauty of preference! What’s wonderful to someone is horrid to another. That’s what makes life interesting. To go back to your point, it’s not necessarily a criticism of threads like these, but more a realisation. I, and I expect everyone else on Basschat, knows that price isn’t necessarily an indicator on how well a product will work for you. There are hundreds of threads on it, I expect. However, it wasn’t until I tried my basses back to back that I realised and felt exactly what that commonly known fact is describing. I had traded my way up to what Fender was billing as the ultimate in technological advancements on their Jazz bass design (in 2016). When I compared it to a bass that I know I love from years of playing it, I wasn’t magically blown away as much as I thought I would be. I was tongue-in-cheek about being disappointed, but the reality is that I had experienced the feeling that I knew about - the foregone conclusion that more money doesn’t equal better. I took to Basschat because my better half told me to shut up about comparing basses, haha.

  39. I don't know why it's called a Go Bar Deck...but it is. Basically, two pieces of chipboard held apart by some sturdy bolted treaded rods; the radius dish placed on the bottom; flexible rods (the Go Bars) pressing down the curve-bottomed braces into the radius dish while the glue dries: And here are all but the last four small braces. This will be left overnight for the glue to fully cure and dry and then I'll add the last four braces. And then we will have a subtly spheroidal top ready for the braces to be slimmed in cross section - and then the tap tuning can commence

  42. I think most advice here is to buy the best bass you can find, within your budget. The bass that speaks to you. If that's an upgraded MIM Jazz bass then all is good. IMO there is no ultimate. All we need is a bass that makes us sound good. If you want a true comparison you need to play your basses through the same amp and cab. My experience is that I found a very "reliced" Sadowsky RV5 Metro, for good price, and it sounded so good that I sold my Lakland 55-94, Fender Jazz V and Mike Lull M5V. I'd play the cheapest bass available if it sounded like this Metro. We should buy the basses we want to play. The ones that make us happy to pick them up.

  46. Certainly a lot of praise for the mexican made fenders these days. Thing is if you're gigging somewhere you don't have control over sound or it's a quick setup you could be playing a Fodera, a knackered Ashton acoustic and later a Hofner, the audience might see the difference but if the sound man isn't bothered that day they'll just hear a low end mushy rumble. I went to a Marcus Miller masterclass and he was talking about the Sire basses. At the time the V7 was the "bottom" range and he was saying, I'll paraphrase, about the V9 and V10 range that all the details like flame tops etc doesn't make much difference to sound its for you to enjoy looking at the bass, holding it, inspire you to pick it up and play it. But he's happy playing his V7. I thought that was anti-marketing! Same principle applies across the board: get a good tool for job, and if you want bells and whistles the differences are for your enjoyment more than any conceivable difference to others.

  47. Times have well and truly changed in terms of more expensive equates to sounding better. One of my closest friends does heaps of writing and recording and has been on quite a few big budget film scores in the past few years, he uses Harley Benton basses and guitars for a lot of his work because they sound great. They may not feel as good in the hand and have a few rough edges compared to a £1500+ Fender but for him it’s all about the sound. I have owned some custom built instruments and some really cheap basses over the years, and I enjoyed getting a good tone from a cheap bass and in a pub/marquee/hall I would challenge anyone to pick an expensive bass over a £100 Harley Benton of the same style.
