I tried to start a thread like this once but just got burned by other people explaining to me that the examples I gave weren't cr*p. Oh and helping me to understand the function of subjectivity and its application in popular music. For which lessons I am eternally grateful.6 points

I really like this bass but I only need one Precision and I have decided to stick with my '51 CS. Plus the money would come in handy, so no trades. You will be hard pushed to find another surf green 70RI Precision in the UK. Good condition with a few little nicks and abrasions here and there, nothing major, and you can see there was once a circular sticker on the pickguard if you hold it up to the light (it's barely visible and I didn't notice it for weeks). Weighs a smidgeon over 9 pounds, plays very smoothly with hybrid coated EB nickel Slinkies on. Only has a soft gigbag but will be safely packed in bubble wrap and cardboard. £750 plus post in UK My NBD thread with pics I bought it from Gas Station Guitars at the start of May but the advert has disappeared (apologies I linked to another ad of theirs)... I will add more pictures of my bass on Sunday Addendum: Guitar Info Your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan in 1997 - 2000 Production Number: 929695 points

OK. Nut 43mm and centre of low E to high E 35mm. Bridge centre of E to E 52mm. 9lb 8oz on the scales First impressions are very good. Nicely finished and set up. No sharp fret ends. The pickups sound pleasing if slightly middy. All 5 switch positions are very useable. The only small issue is on the headstock. The logo is a bit smudged and the truss rod adjustment cavity has a little black residue, from a dirty hex key I guess. It's a lot of fun to play. I'm enjoying abusing it with my basic lead lines and the odd chord foray. Great value for money.4 points

I have refound the bass building bug and because I am so happy with how well I am getting on I have decided to do something I would not have expected in a million years. I am selling my Elrick in line with my goal to have 5 of my own builds by this time next year to replace most of my other basses. This Elrick is one of the best playing 5’s out there. Clearly I have measured everything, I want to incorporate the neck shape into my own build. It has been played a lot and does have scuffs and little scratches, hence a friendly price. I can ship in the original hardcase at documented cost, but would insist on insurance. - Elrick Gold Series 5 with water cured redwood burl top. - Build: 2015 - Neck: quarter sawn hard maple - Swamp ash body - Neck mount: bolt on - Fingerboard: birdseye maple - Inlays: Dichrolam Blocks custom - 24 medium frets + 0 fret - Nut width: 48 mm (1,89 inches) - Scale: 889 mm (35 inches) - Fingerboard radius: 304,8 mm (12 inches) - Pickups: Bartolini soapbar pickups - Electronics: Bartolini NTMBF 3-band, controls: Master Volume, PU-Blend, Treble (+/- 16 dB @ 10 kHz), Midrange (+/- 10dB), Bass (+/- 14 dB @ 30 Hz), switches: 3-way mid freq switch (250 Hz, 500 Hz, 800 Hz), active/passive - Bridge: Elrick Custom - Hardware finish: black, tuners: Hipshot Ultra-light - Original Case (please note a lock is broken, it has come off the plastic shell, but the case works just fine) - Made in Chicago USA - Weight: 8,5 lbs (3,85kg) More pics of course not a problem at all. I will gladly capture every angle in natural light. I appreciate selling outright may not be the easiest, so I am more than willing to consider part trades against 5 string fretted or fretless basses of around 1000£ in value.4 points

Well, we're off to Norway on Wednesday for four gigs (Thursday-Sunday) in a tent. Regulations there are a bit looser than here in Germany - possibly because of their much lower population density and hence lower infection rates. The government website states that events up to a maximum of 200 socially distanced guests are allowed. Where we'll be, in Laerdal, is a small town at the end of a fjord where there's a caravan site. In all honesty I do have some reservations about this, but being as music is my sole source of income, what else am I gonna do? This may end up being the only work I do for the rest of the year.4 points

I don't think it would bother me if I never played in public, went out in public, or even saw the public ever again.4 points

Yesterday, sand down with 600 grit, fill a few dinks, then primer, then find more and more tiny dinks to fill, ended up with almost a whole can of primer going on, then smoothed off with 600 grit. Then a final coat this morning, followed by a Speed Awareness Course on Zoom 🙄 This is white, honest! later today, about 5 or 6 coats of Daphne Blue, although my phone seems to want to shift it towards @Teebs green... it is a lovely blue in reality! Tomorrow the gloss lacquer! Already put a couple of coats of gloss on the headstock, and decals. The area around the truss rod is a bit poor. Might try staining it dark brown...4 points

Both sets of braces are still in the 'rough carve' state but functionally are all now in place. The reinforcement strips that will go round the soundhole are just that - they won't affect the shape or the tone: And - although this is still a huge amount of tasks away - at least it's starting to look like an acoustic body:3 points

In 17 years you'll be the same age as me, and you'll probably find that remark quite funny! For what it's worth, I picked up a bass guitar for the first time on my 49th birthday ...3 points

As I don't like "dance" music I will not spoil your thread with un-necessary remarks but please allow me to vent just this once, if I may? I loath and detest this tune way beyond reason. In truth it is a fine example of it's genre and does not deserve my loathing. Unfortunately it is the victim of a traumatic experience of mine, from back in 1989 when it was released. I went on a "works do" to York ,from Nottingham, along with my erstwhile colleagues from our Vauxhall dealership. Whilst on the over two hour charabanc trip, an upto then unassuming office girl ( she's actually a lovely lady and we are still friends), decided that this song was "THE BEST EVER!" She then proceeded (and I kid you not here...non of this next statement is of the "poetic licence" type) to play it back to back for the whole trip there and the whole trip back ...I still break out in a sweat and shiver when ever I hear it to this day..... As a consequence I will not be clicking on your provided link ...I am off now to lie down in a darkened room for a while . Please go back to enjoying your thread kind sir.3 points

Dear Friends, hope you’re all doing fine! During this difficult period, I was still working on my new Bridge. Today a picked up a new version with brass evo-cams.... You can check out the difference between the classic style bridge created in the 50’s & the evolution.... If interested for a new challenge , don’t hesitate to contact me. By the way many thanks to Alain Zenner for the manufacturing of the new EVO-4 Bass bridge !2 points

Think I must be mad, but I've decided to put a Spotify playlist together of this thread. 4 pages in so far. One track per artist - I thought if you like th eone track you can investigate more yourself. A few where I've had to choose a different track from the one in the thread as they are not all on Spotify. I will carry on with this - but here's the first 40+ songs, all 3 hours and 27 minutes. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/59RhYT5dLPwboS9u3njL4S?si=dMaJvNNkS86vEjP5HfNz7Q2 points

How about Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica Album? For example the opening track "Frownland" contains 7/4, 5/4,12/8 and 8/4 - usually two of them at once. That's according to the guy in the second video.....I could never work that out for myself 😕😕. Here is a 30 minute analysis of the song. Actually the first 15 mins talks about the album in general, recording process and lyrics. The last 15 mins go into the musical structure of the song. In minute detail. Way beyond my level but fascinating to watch!2 points

The world could do with a few more like you. The amount of times people seem incapable of detecting the nuances of written conversations can be extremely vexing. Especially when their other contributions reveal them to be capable and intelligent people. It's almost as if they choose to interpret the demonstrably flippant as a serious factual statement.2 points

I just ordered this one. Coming Wednesday. Going to restring it with the La Bella flats (760F-MUS) designed for the MIA Fender Mustang. I can live with the headstock, or, more precisely, I'm going to live with the headstock.2 points

When I read a statement like "wake me up before you go go is crap but the bassline is great" in a discussion forum I assume a) that they intended it as statement of their opinion and b) that they assumed that no-one would read it a statement of fact, because it's a discussion forum. And that's OK with me. If they made the same statement in Wham's Wikipedia page then it would not be OK with me. And lastly, I assume that if someone uses the word 'pants' in a thread title then it's meant to be fun.2 points

Because some people don't care if they gig or not. That is the way with enjoying things. Some people even go into pubs when they weren't being paid, I know, I never got that myself.2 points

To be fair, it is really lovely there. The owners are a couple who are super nice. We're well treated, decent pay and a very appreicative audience so it should be nice. The only issue now will be bagging that parrot and getting it back through customs... now where did I put that folding cage?2 points

I don't think it's mandatory. It was only a few months ago I had use Google to find out who he was, and only a couple of months before that I had to Google Jaco for the same reason. In the case of the latter I wish I hadn't bothered.2 points

Haha, this exactly! It mainly just seems that many people have realized they’re doing the ‘wrong’ gigs. Can’t wait to get back! Communicating onstage with other musicians by playing is were it’s all at for me. Si2 points

I imagine every expensive new bass I buy will turn me into a better player. Mind you, I also buy some cheap stuff just for the fun of it. Every bass offers something, none of them do everything. I agree with the OP's sentiments, but I reckon some of the enjoyment I've had over the years from guitar and bass has been tied up with acquisition of gear, swapping, part-ex etc. I'm a hobbyist. My trade is photography (40 years), and as a professional my attitude to gear is quite different. You buy robust equipment and keep using it until it can't earn you any more money. I'm still using studio flash gear made in the early 1980s (it doesn't actually get better with age). I regularly find myself standing next to amateurs using far more expensive gear than me. It doesn't worry me any more than it would my professional-guitarist mate who only plays Squiers. Hobbyists drive the market, whether it's cameras or guitars. Imagine a world where we all stuck with the first adequate bass we owned. Some of the prestige bass makers would still be working from their sheds.2 points

Just picked up this bad boy in exchange for a surprisingly modest amount of wonga. Intended for general messing around and possible modding. Just given the bass a good clean and a new set of strings. Neck is a lovely satin finish with a vintage tint.2 points

I think this is the real risk with custom basses. Because you can't see and try the physical product before you commission it you're never quite sure what you are going to get. Although on paper everything should be perfect it may not turn out exactly the way you had pictured in your mind. So why not just sell it? Well that's hard, it's not just the monetary investment it's the emotional investment too (almost a feeling of failure) so you keep trying to make it fit and fall in love with it. The reality is if it hasn't after all this time, it's not going too. Once you commit to selling it I think you'll start to feel much better.2 points

I suspect you won't be alone in feeling this. (Not me, mind - I can't wait to get started again)2 points
