We’re entirely open and fair on BC so no problem with you asking about things at all. Like I say just flag anything you have seen and I’ll have a look behind the scenes. As long as you don’t ask why I’m posting from the Caymans then it’s all fine.4 points

NOW REDUCED TO £1250!! I'm putting this one from my collection of Gilletts up for sale as I'm not really a fretless player and got it for a one-off project. It's impossible to overstate just how impressive these extremely rare, UK-made electro-acoustic basses are - IMHO nothing else comes close and other owners say the same. Suffice to say that, at the last Summer NAMM in Nashville, Bass Gear mag declared the Contour 'Best Bass in Show' despite never even having heard of Gillett Guitars before they visited the company's stand! This one is in excellent condition with only a few faint witness marks but nothing you could call a ding, scratch or scuff. Price includes a reasonably durable gig bag and I'd strongly prefer either for the buyer to collect (we're 10 min's from J25 M5) or meet me for handover somewhere between Bristol and Exeter. However, if a buyer insists on shipping (UK only) and is willing to arrange/pay for carriage, I will look at getting a hard case at extra cost. Here's a short-list of key features: Rosewood body; maple ‘C’-section neck — 41mm (1.6”) at nut, 54mm (2.13”) at 12th fret; sculpted ergonomic recesses for fore-arm and rib-cage/beer gut; single active neck pick-up; thru-body stringing; adjustable nut; medium scale length = 31.75"; weight = 3.75kg. http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// http://3 points

Hi folks, Had a Gumtree alert on my phone whilst practising last Sunday. Vintage brand Stingray active bass copy for £160. Looked good. ( You know how it is... I had bought a Fender Champion 100 twin amp the week before from a Gumtree ad, so once they have your number, they send you similar flavour ads). Fine by me, Contacted the guy, and he's only a few miles down the road...makes it easier for me to nip out, do the deal and sneak it past Wifey. It's a no brainer! Or so I thought. Wifey taps me on the shoulder, "Col, I need the car to take the grandkids out". Plan B. Need to wheel out my 100cc scooter once she drives off. Just hope I can carry the axe on two wheels. Challenge on. Coast clear and I whizz over to the sellers village. Pull over at the village pub and phone for closer directions. I ask him " I don't wish to offend, but d'you mind if I wear a mask?" " No probs bud". Next I am knocking on his door, he answers and hands me the bass, he is wearing rubber gloves. The bass looks great, still got the sellophane on the pickguard... but I need to play it. Then the guy says " d'you mind if you stay outside and I wheel an amp over to the porch?' " Course not mate, pays to be careful" Next thing he wheels over a Marshall stack as tall as me, and throws a cable over the top. So here I am standing in his front garden hooked up to this powerhouse of an amp. His neighbours are tending their lawns, washing their cars, kids riding bikes etc. Perfect urban summer scene about to be ripped apart by yours truly. (I have snuck the volume of this 300w Goliath up to five. Bit of Beatles "come together" riff followed by Sniff and the tears "driver's seat". Then distort on full treble for The Stranglers "Down in the sewer" for some real dirt. All the birds have fled the trees. Somewhere a baby is crying, and many dogs are barking... People are staring at me...think it's time to stop. " I'll take it mate" I hand it back and pay up, he returns it clad in bin liners. He says smiling " I recognised "come together, I'm a real Beatles fan". I would have liked to chatted to him for longer as I love all things Beatles too, but I need to stow this axe before Wifey gets home. Manage to balance it ok between my knees on the scooter, but to my horror the car is outside our house. Luckily the garage door is up, so I ride straight in and stow my booty. Just need to wait for her to shower later and I can retrieve my new bass and get it in the rack. Mission accomplished, but it was my wierdest buying experience ever. Good to know that other discerning folks are respecting the covid restrictions seriously though. Cheers Col.3 points

It’s on its way ...... it’s not new to some of you and is arriving in bomb proof packaging....... nothing to see here.... yet!3 points

Giving this a run tonight. It's not that powerful, at only 30 watts, but through the FMC cab it puts out plenty of volume and sounds lush 😍3 points

There's going to be a whole load of nothingness to see over the next week while the final coats are applied, dry and harden. So final shot for a bit...this is broadly the colour the neck will end up as: Yes - that's all for now but thanks for looking anyway3 points

Job done! Happy with results. It’s quite hard to catch the colour on the camera, it’s changing depends on lighting. All shades of green. Much better in person.3 points

Hi Basschat, I'm selling this beautiful USA Fender Jazz Elite 4-string bass, as attempting to decrease my bass collection! This bass sounds and plays wonderfully, and the colour looks killer too! Purchased new 2 years ago in Bristol for £1950, she is in mint condition, no dings or scratches! (pics and videos attached below)2 points

Price is lowered to £1100 (shipping excluded). I seemed to have paid too much for this based on the condition and the photos I saw where not as precise..😉 I wanted to custom paint it anyway so I wasn’t that focused on scratches and wanted to change the bridge too. I want to sell my Yamaha BB3000 or swap it for a BB3000A - as this is the model I was after. I only had it for 2 days as i ordered it from Japan on Ebay. I thought about modifying it into the A-version - but there are too may things to change like knob position, backplate, battery etc. And it feels wrong to "take out" an original bb3000 off the market... It plays really nice - perfect setup. The bridge saddles are quite rusty but this can be replaced. Everything else works.2 points

Actually I always assumed that this time would never come. However, the financing of my new K-Bass PV4 from Knut Reiter is leaving its mark, so that I have to part with an exceptionally resonant, flexible and extremely rare Don Grosh PJ4. The Don Grosh instruments are known and "legendary" in guitarist circles. However, Don only builds a small series of basses every few years, which don't have to shy away from comparison with the custom models from Sadowsky, Lakland, Nash etc. But on the contrary! Here in a nutshell the information about the Don Grosh PJ4. :: Body: swamp ash :: Neck: maple, longscale, 21 frets :: Fingerboard: Indian Rosewood :: Bridge: Hipshot B-Style Aluminum Bridge :: Machine heads: Hipshot Ultralite (USA) plus Hipshot D tuner :: Electronics: Aguilar OBP2, 18V :: Pickups: Lindy Fralin PJ (one of the best PJ sets on the market) :: Color: Nitro lacquer in Charcoal Frost with matching headstock :: Serial number: # 2689 I "retrofitted" the White Shell Pickguard (bought at Don Grosh!), The potentiometer knobs and a Hipshot D tuner myself. The original pickguard is Toirtoise and belongs just like all other original parts for sale. The bass comes with a sturdy case (original), which is of course part of the offer. Shipping is free in Germany. For other countries, please inquire about shipping costs.2 points

I’ve got a Q2n and am very impressed with the audio and it’s ability to handle high SPLs. The video isn’t bad - certainly good enough for FB and YT. I’d echo the fact that it eats batteries so I also use it with an external power pack. I hadn’t noticed the new battery/random stop issue that Silvia describes but then I never put new batteries in it anyway because of using it with the power pack.2 points

Well you did ask what you should buy yourself? Had you just left baby news hanging out there, I would have said "Congrats on the new arrival, buy him a Precision Bass" BTW I don't like to see the words P-Bass (sublime) and Trump (ridiculous) in the same space2 points

Not heard anything further to this from them so I assume this is all accepted their end. The retailer was Andertons. Cracking experience with them. They were the cheapest price as well - alongside Thomann but obviously more local.2 points

@agedhorse is correct on most counst as usual. Fans are a necessary evil if you want a lightweight amp or to get the most from a ligtweight Class D power module. I cannot remember where I saw it but I am sure I read that a heatsink can be 1/4 the size if fan cooled. Be aware though that fab cooling does rely, to some extent, on tutbulent air within the heatsink fins and that can cause noise. The best idea is for a fan to turn on at a predetermine temperature, one that is only reached at gigging volumes.2 points

In reply to your second question, a DSLR will take very good video, but usually the on-board audio will not be good enough. When I say, in my post above, that the audio of the Zoom Q2n is not as good a most of our other devices, well, the only device that the audio from the Zoom comfortably beats is the DSLR. DSLR audio firmware and sound cards don't appear to be optimised for recording music, even when they have a stereo mic (which most do nowadays). One of our answers to that problem is an expensive solution: a Zoom H1n audio recorder in the flash shoe on top of the DSLR, and a mini audio mixer screwed in under the DSLR. We use THIS audio mixer - other makes and models work just as well. All devices properly connected to each other, and the result is sound and video of very high quality recorded on the DSLR's SD card. Bulky solution, and a bit fiddly, as well as way more expensive than the Zoom Q2n on its own. Another alternative we use is an old, no longer sold Canon Powershot, whose video output is by modern standards rather pitiful, but whose audio firmware/compression algorithm appears to be very, very good, and always makes the band videos sound as good as - and sometimes better than - being in the room during the gig. We choose the best solution according to the type and location of each gig. Our default choice, unless video quality is of paramount importance, is always the old Canon Powershot.2 points

Perhaps there'd be more interest in Basschatters attempts at their own music if they'd disclosed the use of a relic-ed bass, or perhaps wondered if a P or Jazz bass would have sounded better? Personally, I used a 2nd hand custom ACG with drums programmed by me with guitar and vox DI-ed into a Focusrite Scarlett 6i8. I'll bet if there was a Rush or Clapton covers Basschat compocompo we'd have 100+ voters and 8+ pages of circular discussion about the relative merits of Wal vs Fender vs cheapoSquier! 😅2 points

Yes all good this end - just need to get my supplier to sort it out now. The previous one left me in the lurch a bit but I’ve found a newer and better one I’m currently working with. Even so the lead time will be weeks and then postage a few more so don’t hold your breath!! Cheers for the support everyone I’ll email you all updates via the product site ASAP.2 points

Interesting thread this. I started on bass using a plectrum and when I discovered Miles Davis, James Brown, P-Funk et all in the mid 80s, I became a finger player with very few exceptions. At the start of lockdown I got ill, recovered and bought a mustang (as you do) . I started experimenting again with my .73 plectrums and oh my days I can out funk my fingers with a plectrum now. I am gobsmacked how funky you can get with a (for me, a thinner) plectrum. I still use fingers for more motown/rock/pop stuff but am a massive convert to the ways of the plectrum.2 points

OK - definitely into the final furlong Trussrod cover cut and fitted with magnetic catches, heel carve and headstock carves are finished, frets levelled and recrowned, action height sorted, intonation sorted and template saddle cut. Here's what it looks like now. Fully playable but final finish not on the body yet and finish also not yet on the neck: So tomorrow will be disassembly and final varnish coats started for the body and the satin finish started for the neck. And then it's...well, done2 points

SVT-II here, use it for all practice, rehearsals and gigs, even small ones. Tone to die for, will never need a gym membership, and my amp will never be stolen at a gig. What more do you need2 points

What are the chances that while you were off buying a new bass to sneak in, Mrs CtP was smuggling in a couple of pairs of shoes and a new handbag?* Nice looking bass 😁 *I know, gender stereotyping, sorry. Make it things related to a hobby of hers. Like... a MiG welder. Or... A couple of pairs of fins and a wetsuit. Or.... A couple of lenses and a new DSLR....2 points
