Many moons ago, Bruce strolled into a pub I was gigging at in Guildford. He hung around at the back of the room until we took a break and then came over, introduced himself (as if we didn't know who he was!) and then offered to buy a round. He sat and chatted with us until it was time to go back on, and then stayed to listen to most of the second set. He particularly enjoyed it when we played "Thick as Thieves" Decent chap.17 points

Over these past few months of lockdown I've taken the time to record some of my fave basslines. Mainly rock, and lots of KISS, but plenty of other stuff from Cliff Richard to The Doobie Brothers to E,W & F in there.... I did it all for myself initially.....and kept it private with just a few close friends but I've been persuaded to upload it all to the public. I'm playing many of the basses in my collection so lots of bass p*rn in there too for those who don't like my song choices... lol! More basslines being uploaded soon..... so please feel free to subscribe. Hope you enjoy.... and please be kind! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4fUL3cm3mec9PPuWwjxuzA/videos Btw, some friends have asked me why I don't have my face onscreen. This is simply because I prefer to concentrate on the instruments and the basslines. I have no interest in seeing what the person looks like on youtube..... unless it's Marta Altesa14 points

Episode 6: Everyone Should Have a Dremel in Their Life Got busy with the Dremel this afternoon. What a wonderful piece of kit it is. I used the guide for the first and second passes and took the deep stuff out by hand as it doesn’t have to be that pretty at the bottom. I think the main issue with the cavity as it was when I received it was that the sides weren’t vertical. I seem to have taken a lot more from the bottom than from top. The control plate now sits in there nicely with quite a bit of wiggle room. I think I’ve done what I need to do with the body and I’m going to book it in for it’s refinIsh.7 points

OK folks we have 107 confirmed buyers with at least one set each. I have placed the order with the supplier who will put them into production very soon and let me know an approx timescale. Once they land I'll email everyone on the pre-sale list with payment instructions. When those orders are shipped the locks will go on general sale (price tbc) and I will update that here. I'll leave the pre-order list open until sometime tomorrow when I get info regarding timescales, then I'll lock this thread and make a new one when they are available to the wider community. Cheers all of you who have supported this little venture! Keep subscribed to this thread for updates. ped7 points

Up for sale goes mid '80s Riverhead Unicorn RUB-1090 bass. Originally black it has been refinished at some point and it was a decent paintjob. Everything works fine, neck is straight with nice dark rosewood fretboard. The only issue is a significant fretwear on lower frets, major in A string positions. I'd say it's 50% wear in 2 or 3 spots. You can still play with a mi-low comfortable action. It weights 3,2 kg / 7,1 lb on my traveler's scales.6 points

Updates! The long sanding journey begins, I got my basic shape with my shinto and then cleaned the surfaces up with the orbital sander and worked around the edges of the front and back of the bass. Once the 60 / 80 grit rough sanding was done I went around the bass to smooth some areas out ready for hand sanding. I cleaned the dust off the bass with some white spirit and took the opportunity to take some photos while the white spirit was still wet. Lot's of hand sanding to follow and I'll tackle that during my evenings this week but I'm very very happy with how this is turning out. B6 points

Spector 4 String Euro LX Neck Through Good overall condition – a few bumps and scrapes on the bass as seen in photos. Very small crack in truss cover at the top end and some hairline cracks on the front face of the headstock. Bridge is tarnished a little as can be seen in the photos. Lovely quilt top. EMG P/J Pickups, The Spector blurb: Our Euro4LX is the production version of our USA handcrafted NS-2. Since 1993 we have been producing world class basses at our Czech Republic factory EuroLX exclusive features include body wings made of USA figured maple over European alder with a slice of walnut between (less weight than solid maple wings), zinc brass alloy bridge (brass tone without the solid brass bridge weight), and a standard rosewood fingerboard (full tone). Check one out for yourself and see why so many of our artists record and tour the world with a EuroLX bass.4 points

Spector 4 String 40th Anniversary - £1450 shipped Mainland UK in a Flightcase. Very good overall condition – just one small scuff near the jack socket is all I can see that is worth mentioning. The Spector Euro Bass 40th Anniversary is the ultimate live and studio bass with powerful EMG pickups and an all Maple body for maximum resonance. Limited Edition - of 40 I believe. This Euro is slightly different to the usual ones in that the wings are solid maple, not maple/alder. So on a par with the US NS2 and older non-LX Euro's. It's also got the 40th inlay at the 12th. Separate battery compartment Specifications · Body: Maple · Top: Quilt Maple / Flamed Maple · Neck:3-Piece Maple · Neck Construction: Graphite Reinforced · Fingerboard: Rosewood · Frets: 24 · Scale Length: 34" · Radius: 16" · Neck Inlays: SPECTOR Crown · Circuit Type: 9-Volt Active · Bridge Pickup: EMG J · Neck Pickup: EMG P · Pickup Type: Active4 points

Wow, must be a great friend Blue, and with such good taste in amplification too! An old friend of mine ( our friendship only goes back nearly 50 years!) called round a few years ago while I was out on the road and left me his lovely Fernandes 1950's style Strat0caster. It's in burgundy mist with a flamed maple neck, and when we played in bands together he'd remembered how I used to comment on it. A lovely gesture.4 points

Bruce, what an underappreciated icon of British Bass. I'm 34, so The Jam were before my time, but he taught me to play bass, riffing along as a teenager to the Greatest Hits album.4 points

It's a bit of a slow build this one but I've done some work on the neck for this. There have been a couple of issues but they got sorted along the way - the main one being a router bit moving when I was removing the excess in the depth of the headstock. I had to cut a slice from an old offcut from the neck and rectify this and it turned out barely visible and will be under the veneer anyway. I thought it might please @TheGreek so I decided the headstock would look nice with a matching veneer to the body! I've never had a bass of this shape before but it is really growing on me and I'm really looking forward to the finished bass. I've also put a veneer between the fretboard and the neck so this follows the veneer on the headstock. Next task will be to sort the template for cutting the neck pocket and control cavity. I've also cut some sycamore that I'll use for the binding. I've had a go at bending it just using the steam from the kettle and I think it should work though I'll still be trying it on a test piece first!3 points

Idea - is it worth having a pinned post with a sort of directory of all members youtube channels? With a lack of gigs there seem to be more of them now and it would be great to find them in 1 place. @ped What do you think?3 points

People referring to an instrument as "she". Also, the image of having to wipe my hands if it "plays like butter".3 points

I've been off the last 2 weekends. Maple Road is back on stage this Sunday. It's an outside Country Club gig. We start at 5:00. We haven't played inside since the Covid. Side note, my friend and great guitarist/ producer of 60 years went to a an old recording studio that was selling off gear. He found a GK 400RB Ii. He sent it to me. The thing looks brand new. It's nice when you receive a gift you can actually use Blue3 points

Mike's been a very busy bunny recently, it seems. He kindly sent me another batch of progress photos, so here we go: Starting to feel like real progress now. Still at the mercy of deliveries from the States (Hipshot hardware) and Finland (Rautia pickup) though, so here's hoping they won't be too delayed. Exciting times!2 points

Not DHL - they are so bad that I’ve heard of serial killers posting bodies through DHL to ensure that they are never found.2 points

I got a Mono double gig bag from Bass Direct many moons ago. Big thumbs up from me. Two basses + 900w head + 2 cabs now do able on my own in one trip. Got to love modern gear. 💃💃🥳2 points

I found the B too floppy on the Super Brights. Currently have some NYXLs with a tapered B string fitted and like them very much! I might try a few more sets outs but can see myself sticking with these.2 points

It's fascinating isn't it? Many moons ago I had an Altec loudspeaker that needed reconing. It was an insurance job and so I took it to the chap for the work. He asked if I wanted a generic cone or the proper Altec one. I made the schoolboy error of suggesting there would be no difference and then spent the next 90 minutes listening to him tell me why that wasn't so!!2 points

A good list! I'd add a drum sander and belt sander for dressing and sizing lumber before it's glued up. It's a significant expense but saves a whole load of ball ache if planing skills aren't up to snuff. Also an oscillating sander if you want to make smooth curves on body and neck templates, as well as prepping bodies and necks for finishing. Also radiussed sanding blocks for fingerboard and fret dressing and a sanding beam for evening narrow surfaces like the edge of fingerboards. Finally, a bench drill makes drilling control knob holes square to the face of a slab body a lot easier than a hand drill. But a hand drill is still hard to beat for putting in that channel from the pickups to the control cavity on rear routed instruments. A cheaper option might be to get friendly with a luthier and reach an arrangement where you can borrow their machinery for maybe a morning or two every weekend in exchange for free labour (especially hand sanding or rough shaping). There are also companies that will custom make necks complete with frets installed so that could save a load of ball ache, unless you happen to like the challenge of overcoming ballache that is...2 points

This is a question that has many different answers, because dependent on your design you will need more or fewer tools. Personally and for my builds I could not do without: - Router - Hand plane - Bandsaw - a Shinto rasp - a selection of files and chisels - clamps (for glueing) - orbital sander - Fretsaw - sandpaper in different grits - a hand drill (think I’ve covered my basic needs now).2 points

I currently use various flangers on my Source Audio Gemini. My favourite standalone flanger was the old brown Boss BF2b. Coukd be subtly and funky like Anthony Jackson or go into self oscillation. But a beautiful quality sound with no loss of low end. Oh and I loved the flanger on the MXR bass chorus deluxe. The EBS unichorus has a nice flanger setting, but it's quite subtle and the nearest to AJ tone that I've heard.2 points

As the car was due a service and sitting on a wall, reading for 2 hours didn't appeal, I finally went out into the wilds of the high street. As that high street was Epsom, a visit to Guitar Guitar was had. Picking up where I left off in Jan/Feb of this year, I tried the Fender JMJ Mustang again (along with a couple of other shorties). Damn! I see a JMJ in my future; so nice. Time to offload some gear to finance it.2 points
