My recently acquired Ashdown Little Bastard. Tried it at rehearsal tonight, sounded lovely through my Warwick WCA 211 pro.7 points

I had a punt on one of these. I'm impressed for the price - very sturdy construction, moveable neck pillow and lots of pockets. It is imitation leather so it doesn't weigh much (used to have a Harvest leather bag which weighed quite a bit on it's own) The colour is good and the 'leather' doesn't look half bad. The only problem is they have used the biggest zips known to man which clank around a bit, but can be replaced. Sits nicely on my back and the front grab handle is always a welcome addition. £59, can't go wrong.. https://www.dv247.com/en_GB/GBP/Fame-Gigbag-Electric-Bass-Antique-Deluxe/art-BAS0010066-000 Cheers ped5 points

Hi all, a good friend of mine had been suffering with a bit of depression and so to cheer him up I’ve bought him a guitar and all the kit. Normally, I’d visit and give him lessons, but obviously that’s not possible. Can anyone recommend any simple and effective YouTube channels or free resources I could recommend to him? If he can play an Oasis song or a Beatles track it would mean the world to him.4 points

I ordered this limited edition Hooky pro bass by Eastwood early this year and it came in September. It’s a clone of the Shergold basses from the 70s but based on Peter Hook’s own bass. It’s a nice bass but unfortunately I can’t get on with the wider neck following my recent hand operation. It’s got a great feel and looks just like my original Shergold Marathon 6. It weighs just over 4.2kgs and comes with original box and registration card. It’s near new condition as I’ve hardly touched it. These are made to order and there is a long waiting list. This is from the first batch. This is a good saving on a new one and without the wait. https://eastwoodguitars.com/products/hooky-bass-6-pro No trades.3 points

New Pickup Day... look what came in the post this morning, now sitting on the workbench waiting to be fitted to my Maruszczyk Jake 5a. NP5 and BigSplitMan 5 both with custom pole spacing to go with the 17mm string spacing on the Jake, OCD I know but it's my pride and joy bass and I wanted it to look as good as it sounds. The pole height on the humbucker is bang on for the fretboard radius as well. I already added a series / parallel /single switch for the existing Delano humbucker, so I'll have the choice of a split coil version of a big single, or a humbucker made out of two of them (series or parallel - series should be a monster!)3 points

Time to shift another bass that’s not getting enough use. The build quality of this is phenomenal. Great neck with Ebony fingerboard that is soooo dark! It’s in superb condition, a small paint chip (circled) is the worst of it. A thumb rest has been added which can be removed but will leave two screw holes. It’s been modded with a John East preamp that contains vol, pickup pan, bass, treble, mid, mid freq and separate piezo blend, piezo tone, Active / passive switch. 33.75” scale 19mm string spacing EDIT - Now includes Hiscox Liteflite hard case (not the one pictured). £975 > Now £950 delivered in the UK.2 points

Due to the Covid-19 situation and severe back problems (66% officially disabled because of it) plus right shoulder injury (non-operable capsulitis from which, after more than 3 years, I will never fully recover), I'm selling all my basses over 4 kilos and also the ones I'm not really using. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. GROSMANN 5 FF Custom Order, top of the range model with a 2 pieces body in wenge and alder, 2019, 34 to 36 inches fanned frets. NO TRADES ! Asking price including shipping fully insured with tracking number to your place in these European countries (ask for other countries) : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (excluding French overseas departments and territories), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom : £777 GBP !!! (new price was £1599 GBP...) In fully working condition, fully original and in very good lightly used condition, almost new, except some very small blemishes (see below). Here are the specifications : Body : bass side in wenge and treble side in alder for better sound balance Top : book matched flamed maple Neck : bolt-on (with inserts) one piece hard rock maple Fingerboard : wenge (flat radius) Frets : 24 (no wear at all) Headstock : 3 + 2 shape with a string retainer Pickups : 2 x Delano JC 5 HE/M2-AS (AS is for longer pickups) Preamp : Delano Sonar 2 Controls : volume (push-pull active/passive), blend, bass, treble Tuners : Schaller BM Bridges : 5 x ABM mono rails Strings spacing at bridge : 20 mm Nut : Graph Tech Strings spacing at nut : 9 mm Knobs : soft grip rubber Scale : fanned frets 34 to 36 inches Hardware colour : black Truss rod : one double action fully working with 2 carbon rods in the neck Finish : high gloss black burst with some very slight shades of purple on the front and headstock (not as strong as on the photos and depending on the light too), high gloss black on the back and matte finish on the back of the neck Land of craftsmanship : Romania Serial number : none (custom order) Year : 2019 Weight : 4.625 kilos Action : from 1.5 mm under the G string to 2 mm under the B string at 12th position (can go lower, but was perfect for me) Will come with a Music Store well padded gig bag (the only one I have which is big enough for this bass). Non-smoking environment as usual. The bass has been fully set up professionally. It has been fitted with a brand new set of specially designed for fanned frets basses Dingwall Nickel Plated Steel round wound strings (45 - 55 - 80 - 100 - 130). I wanted to try a fanned frets bass, but as a fretless player, I'm bit "lost", so my loss is your gain. The bass is very powerful with roaring low mids (thanks to the wenge) and the combination of the full Delano design (dead silent), with the lutherie and the Dingwall strings gives a really punchy, clear and full sound whatever way you turn the EQ knobs. Link to the Delano pickups : https://www.delano.de/jc_5_he_m2/jc_5_he_m2_details.html Link to the Delano preamp : https://www.delano.de/electronics/sonar_2/sonar2_details.html Link to the Dingwall strings : https://lordofthestrings.com/fr/basse/electric/5-string/dingwall-lb5np-5-string-longscale.html Link to the Bass Direct page with a lower range model : https://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Grosmann_5_FF_Amber.html What you see is what you get ! Look at the photos taken under different angles to see the very good lightly used condition (almost new) of this bass, except for 3 points at the back, some surface scratches on the front and back (hard to capture) and other very small blemishes around the output jack. Don't hesitate to ask for more.2 points

Hello to all the members of this great forum. I often read you for the topics that are always very interesting and because I find that there are very prepared people. I am writing to you from Italy and using the Google translator, I hope you forgive any mistakes. I have been playing bass since I was 18 and to date the passion has not passed. Thanks2 points

I have, unfortunately, some inside knowledge of Hermes IT, from a brief stint there myself a while back and someone I know more recently. It's a mess. Staff turnover is crazy. I'm no primadonna and a job's a job but I wasn't sticking around that's for sure. To be fair the rest don't seem much better. They're all trying to do it for less than the cost it needs to do it properly, and none of them can up the prices to what they should be cos everyone would just use the cheaper options instead. As part of my induction I did a shift in a Hermes depot sorting parcels in the middle of the night. The work rate of the people doing that stuff is unbelievable and they get paid sod all. Systems go down, scanning doesn't work, two lorries come in at once etc etc and they are expected just to to deal with it all with no slack and not enough people. If you want to blame someone it's all down to the people who own and run the place IMO. They know how it is and they don't care so long as they can squeeze a profit out of it.2 points

If you do buy an instrument from BassBags, I can vouch for the service & great setup that they do. I tried the 'buy an old bass' route, travelling a fair bit up and down the motorways to try out old basses in various music shops, but mainly found that they weren't setup right for me (pizz only player needing low action), many were I think set up for arco, with dead strings, and so on, so it was difficult to evaluate instruments, and then of course I was then going to have to find a luthier (that fabled person) who could make the instrument playable. So agree that if you can find a used setup working instrument that feels right that's great, but I wouldn't rule out buying new.2 points

Held off for a while on this, had to wait for some bits to arrive. So I’ve used Ashdown exclusively for years, probably since about 2009 - previously I’d used Trace Elliot and then SWR. I still love Ashdown, think they’re a great company and make some unbelievable stuff. Literally just fancied a change. Initially started looking for a 410 - I Miss that air that a big fat deep cab moves. I found @bigthumb was selling an EBS proline 410 and as he’s local, jumped at it. Then I set about looking for a head. I always fancied a fafner II or TD650 as they look brilliant. The fact that I don’t have huge amounts of cash was a deciding factor...but there was loads of conflicting opinions on the 650 vs the 350 ve the Reidmar. Cue a discussion with resident expert @EBS_freak who was really gracious and helpful. He reminded me that @Dood was selling a Reidmar 750. A day or so later...here we are. Very, Very (VERY) loud. Super clean - but will investigate the settings more at rehearsal as my neighbours are all poorly with Covid19 and I don’t want to disturb them too much. Enjoying it so far.2 points

Drinks on amps? Did a rather posh jazz gig Saturday before last and as we started the last number the restaurant owner, who had possibly had a drink or two herself, came up behind me on stage and proceeded to stand 4 champagne flutes on my amp and then rather unsteadily fill each one with Chateau whatever. I motioned for her to stop but she just smiled and pointed to the bottle, mouthing "No,no, this is really good stuff" I was completely distracted from my playing, expecting the very worst to happen behind me, but miraculously we all survived.2 points

I've no affiliation with any brand, but I don't much care for counterfeits, "cheeky waterslides", honest John selling an "unknown" vintage attic find which is really a cheap copy with a decal, etc.2 points

I have refinished my Spector and while at it I moved the controls to the back. The sliders do what the pots did, vol, vol, bass, treble. This was my gigging bass for a long time, I never touched the controls on the bass but got annoyed when they were accidentaly turned when getting it out from the gigbag etc. So I thought it was a great idea and it was since I never regretted. Love the clean look of the front also love when it takes a while for peolple to realize what's missing 🙂 Also the sliders are sticking out of the plate just enought so you can move but never with your body or leg or whatever it is getting in contact with in the heat of the gig 🙂2 points

I can't imagine "You're so vain" being about a bass player. I don't know if she ever wrote a song called "You're so modest (you probably think this song is about the lead guitarist)"2 points

I don't own any black leads, for that very reason - grubbing around on my hands and knees in the pitch blackness of some god-forsaken "music venue" looking for a black lead in an ugly tangle of black leads got really old, really quickly. I now have a lovely collection of leads in colours so eye searing, a primary school student would think they were "a little outré." But the best part is; now I use a wireless dealio, to the casual observer, I am the dictionary definition of rugged masculinity, while safely gaffa taped to the floor, my rainbow hued cabling screams new millennium, gender fluidity. Sorry, what was the thread about, again?2 points

For this kind of learning, it's a Good Idea to learn the last few bars first. Once they're ready, learn the preceding few bars; rinse and repeat. This way, you're playing more and more into the 'comfort zone' of stuff already learnt. It's an old theatre trick for learning stage lines. Start from the end and work forward, and you'll never be lost.2 points

They're great & can be a one cab .solution for lots of gigs. I have two of them, use them either with my Shuttle 9.2 or a Little Mark ii. They've always fitted the bill for pubs & clubs & anything bigger would be through the PA anyway. Sound quality is great & they like to be pushed with the 9.2 but I usually get told to turn down. I'll put it this way, at one time I had one Focus & a Berg 1/12, the Berg was replaced with the second Focus. I still have both! (Debadged for a more subtle look)2 points

Finished! My friend wanted Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwounds and they are right when they say they sound like rounds! Very impressed with those. I need to do some setting up, as I left the nut slots a little high. Overall I couldn’t be happier with the sound and look!2 points

Yeah he’s a very tasty player. I was learning the original Fool For Your Loving a few weeks ago and the bass on it is great. Had the pleasure of making Neil Murray a cup of tea many years ago at the Roland HQ in Swansea where I worked. I said: “You’re Neil Murray aren’t you?” and he said: “Well I’m an older, fatter version of him,” which I thought was quite witty.2 points

People wondering why some of us no longer own the heads we have since come to think of as the best we've had. You kiss a lot of frogs and some of them turn into princes. After a while you can forget the frogs and look back to see which prince was the most handsome. You don't just keep the first decent looking prince and stop kissing the frogs. I can and might get another Orange Terror one day. Just like my favourite cab is my BF Midget but I went without one for the best part of a year before getting another. If I was a millionaire I might keep all the amps and basses and cabs and effects. If I lacked curiosity or imagination I might have just stuck with the first decent amp I owned and assumed I'd found the best. But ifs and buts, as the poet wrote, butter no parsnips2 points
