Here we have my trusty Yamaha BB1200s I've had this bass for 17ish years. It was a basket case when I got it. But it was black which was something I'd always dreamed of owning since I saw one in the Bass Centre in london back in the 80s. It must have been bottle green at some point in its life ( which was ironic as I sold a green one to buy it) as I noticed in the pre amp compartment that there was a bit of colour left around the inside. I'm guessing it may have been owned by a pro player in the 80s who had requested the colour. The paint had reacted badly with the wood by the time I first saw it .it was a real mess So sent it off to be professionally resprayed. As you can see from the photos its got some dings, the worse being where it sat in it's stand. The foam had collapsed over the years and I hadn't noticed. Normally I'd want you to come around to mine and plug it in and have play on it , give it the once over and also so I can answer any questions face to face ... but in these covid apocalypse days I understand if you can't/don't want to etc... Any questions please don't hesitate to ask..6 points

Hi I was talking to him at the time and the discussion was to sell or he had sold the current bass to fund a new build I can't remember if it was sold at that point it may well have been. At that time he mentioned he was going into hospital and would get back to me once that was out of the way. So events over took the intention to get a new bass. He was a really nice guy I had a lot of time for him. Came to several of the Moffat Bass Bashes. Alan6 points

This normally means wanting to hear what you want to hear. Anything different is political bias (or as Herr Trump would say, "Fake News"). The way I see it, the beeb is accused of political bias by both left and right wing folks; this probably means they're doing something right! Perhaps if every news story was followed by a bit of comment in the style of the Telegraph (or The Sun if it's TV news 😄) that would give it more of an air of "telling it like it is". Though every time I've heard someone being congratulated for "telling it like it is" it's following something deeply offensive said by the likes of Our Honourable M.E.P For Not Turning Up To Fisheries Meetings... As for whining right-on left wing comedy, would you prefer a bit of Jim Davidson, or Big Bernard Manning? Not sure if it's down to political bias by media organisations, but you don't seem to hear much right wing comedy, or right wing music? Could it be that Right-On Whining types are that little bit more creative? 😁6 points

picked up my VS4 today after a 6 month wait, and have been playing it all afternoon through my Ashdown tonepocket. It really is a stunning instrument - the build quality is flawless and it plays perfectly. The pickup seems quite bright, but i'll wait until rehearsal to judge it fully - the active electronics take a bit of tweaking, but i'm sure i'll get used to it. The Pau Ferro board has some nice swirls, the bridge looks great - everything feels solid. Overall, worth the wait and very happy with it5 points

Me and him would be having words. I would suggest that whatever he thinks, it's probably not the actual bass that is the cause of his woes. Amp/speakers/PA/fold back/venue or a combination of the above. Tell him to get some IEM's and wind his neck in.4 points

My blues band played for the BBC for nothing but 'lunch and exposure' and it actually did us the world of good At the start of 2019 we were a brand new band, had our first rehearsal in January. Our first gig in March, I think. Our guitarist sent one of our rehearsal recordings to a guy from BBC Radio Suffolk, Stephen Foster, and invited him to come along to our second gig. To my amazement he did. To my further amazement, he really liked us and invited us to play at the Ipswich Maritime Festival that summer. No money but food, big BBC stage right on the quayside. What that gave us was a chance to perform on a big stage with a huge sound system in front of lots of people. The guitarist's son recorded some of it on his iPad and that ended up giving us the best live demo that a new band could have asked for. And it opened the door onto the blues festival scene in Suffolk this year, which is pretty lively (but of course everything was cancelled). Nevertheless we got many gigs on the back of the recordings nd will no doubt get many more once it gets going again.4 points

I just thought I’d share this little project with you, I bought what Im pretty sure is a late 70s or early 80s Kay cort (please correct me if I’m wrong here 🙂). It was in a pretty grimy condition in an old case, but after a closer look I’d say all original , it didn’t work very well, the jack socket had a few spiders in it 😁 , and there was a broken wire on the pickup selector switch, so I set to work cleaning it up , more pics to follow 🙂3 points

You probably don't need a Ric at the moment but the weather is set to get colder next week so if you have an open fire a Ric would be perfect.....and you'll be doing the world a favour.3 points

Big shout out for Thomann. The bass I ordered (B stock) wasn’t in stock. So not only did they offer me a brand new bass at the same price, the guy offered to know off a few more quid “for my inconvenience”. Quite amazing service.3 points

The sound from that seems to sit perfectly so I'm guessing the new one will do the same (plus you have the vintage switch option too). If your singer doesn't like that one, tw@t him on the head with it.3 points

I loved mine, I really did. It was pretty much clank right out of the case. If you want some convincing as to why you don't need one, I'd only cite that I gigged it twice and I was lucky enough to stop someone nicking it on both occassions. They are too high-profile. Interestingly, I now play a five string that cost me nearly six times as much as the 4003 in the photo below and nobody so much as bats an eyelid as they don't know what it is.3 points

Years and years of tinkering and I discovered one answer.... Run everything flat. If not happy, then work out what each eq dial/slider does. If running flat gives a desperate feeling something is missing, then dial in from there. Only if essential.3 points

A gig tonight for the band I do tech stuff for. All punters seated, table service only, masks when not seated and a noise limit of 85db.3 points

I had the Cali I passive VS4s for a while. Gigged it regularly and tbh couldn't really tell the difference sound-wise between it and my backup Fender MIJ P bass. Gratuitious Sandberg pic.:2 points

I’ll convince you that “you don’t need a ric” by a) letting you see one b) letting you play one there you go. Sorted 😛2 points

Absolutely..! I am always amazed that people are prepared to buy in into this anti-BBC agenda that is being promoted by certain parts of the right to make way for some Fox like news channel with a far-right slant to operate without any real competition. No one seems to be able to entertain the possibility that this is a band that simply got cut from the programme (as the BBC have said) and have decided to exploit the situation for publicity.2 points
-
That might be the way to go as nothing beats the build quality of a Sandberg IMHO Dave2 points

If that is what you are after then I would get the Sandy and pop a different pick up in - that way you get the quality of the build and the sound you want. Had a passive VS4 with a Sandy pick up - it’s still not a Fender P2 points

I can't. I have no other gas except for a mapleglo 4003 and the fun I could have with 2 amps and Ric'o'Sound....2 points

...and the shelving... and the flooring. You'd be hard put to find more timber per cubic metre in a flippin' tree house! It's all right. We're used to a multitude of splendid domestic grains and textures accompanying your posts by now. It's one of the "perks" of the Build Diaries.2 points

One of the few times I’ve heard a Stones cover where the instruments actually sound right, massive kudos!2 points

So for those of you who are not sure about latencies, check out WorldJam on youtube. We are playing live. They delay the stream slightly to sync it better with the zoom visuals, but everything is done through Jamulus. It's free and superior. Opened up a whole new world of performance for me. Like I said, here are a group of us performing together across the world, at the same time, last Saturday. The violinist and the singer are the masters of delay, but it comes after a while. ochi.mp42 points

My last WorldJam live gig was a version of 'Dark Eyes' with a singer in Russia and a violinist in USA. Myself and the two guitars were in the UK. Live. Admittedly the first two haved learned to deal with latencies of up to 150ms, but for those of us in the UK, they're usually somewhere between 20 - 50.2 points

I didn't see the clip but it wouldn't have made any difference to what follows. I've been retired for some years now, but before that I was involved in the music industry in numerous capacities for the best part of 20 years. In all that time I never did quite manage to get my head around the snobbery that I encountered from time to time, mostly from people who should know better. When I come across it on Basschat (less frequently than used to be the case to be fair), it kind of reminds me of this Apologies for the much-shortened clip; best I could find at short notice.2 points

The good news is that the timber is coming! Clearly things are busy over there at David Dyke's - it arrives Monday In the meantime, the constructional veneer arrived for the back/top demarcation - this is 1.5mm maple rather than the standard 0.6mm - and is now being glued to the underside of the top: The main next job that holds everything else up is getting the neck blank laminated once the wood is here2 points

Well, the post indicates that the bloke's widow intends to buy it back, or at least make an offer. If the offer is not to your liking, you could always decline to sell it. If I were the owner and the offer was fair, I would take the cash and maybe get on the phone to ACG to commission a replacement.2 points

See, I used to love R4, but since the referendum on a certain topic a few years ago I got fed up with politcal bias, the whining right-on left wing comedy, and the increasing wokeness. I want to hear it straight, not spun so fast they could use it as a gyroscope - I don't give a sheet about their opinion, or speculation, and I like to hear comedy pith taking about all political viewpoints and not just the ones that the Beeb doesn't like. Hell, they make the Guardian look right wing. It's so bad now I actually subscribe to the New York Times as the least politically biased news source I can find, and steer clear of speech radio altogether. F&$%@#g politics, it ruins everything it touches.2 points

Ive just got a Yamaha DBR12 to use with my Synth, but the first thing I did was hook up my Zoom B1-Four ( i sold my Helix recently) and play bass through it. First time ive picked a bass up since July. I was very impressed with this tone. I had a Fearless F112 last year, but felt it was a bit too open and bright. I think it was the mid driver that made it sound like this. Playing with a pick i just couldn't get what i was looking for out of it. The DBR12 seems warmer, but still without an obvious colouring. I know its a budget cab, but I think i could gig on bass with this and the B1 if i didnt have anything else to play through. Very happy with it.2 points

It interests me particularly because I used to be so angry all the time, and always with other people refusing to adhere to my point of view. Back then if I accused someone of sitting on the fence it was literally the worst insult I could throw. More recently I've been trying to change the way I live and recognise that what other people think is none of my business. To be accused of being a fence sitter myself is wonderful indication that I am succeeding.2 points

Reading my posts back it potentially looks like I have an axe to grind with Sadowsky - I really don’t. I haven’t ever owned one of their basses but definitely would in future, most likely a Japanese MetroExpress! It just seems like they’ve seriously missed the ball here. Granted, COVID hasn’t made things easy for anyone but one would think that would be all the more reason to be meticulous before releasing a new product to market. In Roger Sadowsky’s partial defence, he’s been active on Talkbass and seems to be taking measures to adjust and improve these basses. For example, below is a photo of the control cavity, taken by LowEndLobster: Bit of a bird’s nest. One of the components appears to not even be fastened down (3M adhesive on the back) and look at that battery. but Roger has implemented some changes already so the cavities will now look more like this going forward: Much neater. And the battery doesn’t look quite as crusty as before. Also, the Vintage Tone Control unit will soon be available separately as an upgrade part, along with a humcancelling J pickup. Nice that these will become available but the VTC should have been a standard feature in my opinion, especially on a bass with a boost only preamp! Seem a bit mental not to have any means of rolling off treble whatsoever as standard - a tone control costs bloody pennies! This way, people will have to spend additional money on upgrade parts, plus they’ll have to find their own luthier to do the installation. A sub-£1k bass can tip over the £1k Mark at the end of all this. Can anyone tell I won’t be buying one of these??2 points
