I have bitten the bullet, and I hope you don't mind, Bilbo, but I've used your transcription as a basis to adjust to something that's as correct as I can make it - unfortunately it's a steep learning curve regarding the notation software I'm using, and frankly it's much easier for me to play it than notate it! Bearing in mind that I have played Fool For Your Loving perhaps a couple of hundred times in the last 20 years, in my mind it is played in a definite way, sticking close to what's on the record, as I've had to play every note as strongly as possible given the volume that other band members play at! So I have to eat humble pie a little when listening to the original over and over, as some parts could indeed be classed as 'clinkers', in that they're not executed 100% perfectly as I would hope to do these days. However, the hunt for 'perfect' execution means that one plays safe, whereas when Fool was recorded I was 'going for it' (and trying to put some Jack Bruce influence into the bass part) so it was better to have a one- or two-take partly improvised performance rather than a part which was worked out note by note from beginning to end. On Live In The Heart Of The City, I go overboard trying to go one better than what I did on Ready An' Willing, and while some parts are impressive, a lot of it sounds too 'over the top' to me nowadays - very unrelaxed. It'll take some time to produce finished notation to my satisfaction, but I'll put it up on Basschat when it's done.11 points

Finally managed to collect my new toy which replaces a Fender Professional P Bass. Summary ........ This has the nicest / most playable neck I've ever tried, it's light, and the body feels smaller than a P and feels great. A strange analogy, but it just "fits like a glove" . And it does look rather cool and could end up as a classic! So thanks to Mark at Cool and Classic guitars for his patience (took a few months to collect this due to it being a 700 mile round trip to collect and Lockdown etc) and for making the process of buying so easy! Starting to get to grips with the tone - which is a LOT more complicated to deal with than a passive P Bass and can't wait to play it with the band. Is it good? Well, I haven't put it down for three days, so I reckon it must be. Hmmmm .... Nice!8 points

Hiya - just sat looking at the receipts from Christmas purchases, and the plans for home improvement in 2021... I have gone a bit mad since the initial lockdown, so as I’ve just bought a new bass and have 2 other p/j’s, thought I’d see what the interest would be in this beautiful thing. it’s 9lbs, sounds brilliant and has a 35 scale, it has EMG pickups, maple/walnut/alder (?) body wings. And the non trim tonepump pre. A couple of small dinks on the rear of the body, but is in great nick overall. It has no case/bag - it came with something I’d describe as a “firewood” case which was so scruffy, I binned it. I could source something for shipping I suppose. the 35” scale doesn’t feel odd, I suppose I’m used to fender sized bodies so with the smaller NS body, it all balances out.8 points

Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 1994 in Trans Red Serial number database gives May 5th 1994 I got this bass from Jim Parris (Carmel etc) in the late 90s I think.. and I've never gigged it. It's super clean for it's year and pretty much just how I got it all that time ago. There are a just couple of small dinks in the finish and the hardware shows slight signs of being used 2EQ, Translucent Red with birds eye Maple neck and the proper bridge with the string mutes still intact At one time I had a Bartolini pickup installed as I had other Stingrays I was gigging and fancied the change for studio.. but this has been replaced again (The Bartolini will be for sale too I expect..) Uploaded some pictures for now but will try and take better ones.. and any others by request5 points

He's certainly not a hard man to track down, within 5 minutes of googling I've obtained his mobile number, home address, band details, other members contact numbers, photos to confirm he is the same chap as in the newspaper article.5 points

This is perfectly true. To that end, reporting him to the police could bring him the support he clearly needs. He is stealing from other people as we speak (or attempting to).5 points

So the Christmas preparations have moved from working to get everything ready and Covid secure to "how are we going to get the presents to folks who were supposed to be coming here and what are we going to do with the food and drink?" What I have found is that solving that last problem has made solving the other two seem much more straightforward. Cheersch! And it gave me a bit of time to sneak down the cellar for a 'few minutes' : The red on the bench isn't the result of my blood, sweat and tears...it's spilt dye from a previous project.5 points

I really don't understand how you're handling this. This guy needs to be dealt with by the police. Even if you do get your money back tonight (I'd bet an equal amount you won't) I guarantee he'll continue to do this to others. This really needs to be raised with the police and dealt with as fraud, his suspended sentence would hopefully then revert to a custodial sentence and maybe, just maybe, he'll then think twice before conning others. I'm tempted to buy something from him in the hopes he scams me so I can deal with this!!5 points

Following representations from the Basschat Massif, No 10 Downing Street will commission the new 'Boris Bass' and Dido Harding will be tasked with ensuring this is distributed ( via a friend from the golf club with a £17m contract ) to all Bassists in the UK. Loosely based on the Emperors New Clothes, the Basses start changing hands at well over the £5000 list price, even though none will ever be delivered. A Mark Two version with 4 Tiers is promised for the following December ( and touted as the ideal Christmas present) but in August 2021 Boris, reacting to criticism he left cancelling Christmas 2020 too late, cancelled it early this time. Trading of Basses and other Musical items with the EU and other countries was halted until 2023 when the backlogs of food and vaccines at the Ports were eventually cleared.4 points

Withdrawn - it’s far too good. Bought in August ‘20, it’s a stunning Bravewood with slab board, ash body, Radioshop pickups, and tons of mojo. Sounds outstanding. Bravewoods sell themselves, so I’ll just leave it there. Weighs 9lbs according to the original listing on the BW website. ***The last photo, form the Bravewood website, is closest to showing the colour of the bass. I may retake photos if I get a chance. No issues, and well looked after.3 points

Well the documentary is going to be three 4-hour parts released at annual intervals, so there'll be plenty of time for Peter Jackson to show it. Then five years later he will release a further three 4-hour films covering a 30-minute tea-break they once took.3 points

sire P7 bass, excellent condition with no issues, can post fir £20 The Marcus Miller P7 is a P-style bass with a Jazz bridge pickup giving you a versatile bass that just oozes vintage style. Based on basses (excuse the pun) from the 70's you can get loads of tones from the bass depending on how you set up the EQ with the Sire preamp. The active preamp gives you plenty of headroom which means you get an open sounding bass. Alder Body and Rosewood neck The P7 has an Alder body for a smooth but punchy bass sound with plenty of mid-range and fantastic bass response. The Rosewood board gives your tone a depth and warmth that you wouldn't get from any other fingerboard type. Sire guitars are the company that build the now famous Marcus Miller basses. Marcus Miller himself is a world-renowned jazz and funk bassist with some of the best bass chops on the planet. And he's worked with Sire instruments to make basses that are affordable but far exceed their price point in terms of feel, style and above all, sound. How do they do this? Unlike a lot of other guitar companies that outsource their work, Sire own the factory where their basses are built. This means firstly that they can cut costs but secondly, have full control of the quality of instrument that comes out of the workshop. This allows them to oversee the entire process. And, Sire instruments are doing good in the world by taking a share of the corporations profits and giving back to society. They have founded schools in Cambodia and Laos and teaching music to children. Here's what Sire say about the Marcus Miller P7 CORE TECHNOLOGY FOR GOOD SOUND MARCUS HERITAGE-3 SIRE preamp is a perfect example that represents our technology and philosophy integrated into our instruments. With multiple tone controls, you can have total command in finding and getting the tone you want. The use of 18v battery enables the player to attain unaltered natural sound with strong and powerful output. With 3 band EQ, the player can have versatility in sound that can be suited for all occasions of music sessions. All models come with option for active and passive setting. Even in the passive mode, volume, tone, pickup balancer is fully functional, giving the player more controls for the tone in any mode. All models also come with sweepable midrange control option that Marcus Miller advocates as a must have option. The middle frequency control knob allows the player to set sound frequency anywhere between 200Hz~1kHz. This option will be very handy in finding the desired sound. Marcus Super Precision(Neck) + Jazz(Bridge) Marcus Super Precision Pick up Set is made with US-manufactured USA coil. It is an upgraded pick up set that allows you to create both the special tone fromthe precision bass along with vintage sound from the jazz bass. In addition to the Fiber Bobbin and Alnico 5 magnets, this pick up is also made with US manufactured USA coil magnet wires. This Marcus Super Precision Pick Up Set gives the player that rich, powerful unique precision bass sound as well as the vintage jazz bass tone. NORTH AMERICAN ALDER A popular choice for most bass guitars is the North American Alder. Other basses at this price range commonly use Basswood or Agathis tone wood but Sire Guitars chooses the traditional North American Alder which is known for its strong clear full-bodied sound, with beefy mids and excellent lows that is perfect for the traditional jazz bass sound. STABLE AND ACCURATE SOUND WAVE TRANSFER Marcus Miller SIRE P7 bass is equipped with newly designed Marcus Miller SIRE Bridge which is specially developed with Marcus Miller’s request. This bridge has the characteristics of vintage jazz bass with heavy mass saddle. This combination produces a rich and punchy sound. New Marcus Miller Bridge is a string-thru body bridge mechanism that allows for more tighter, accurate and stable tone. SOUND UPGRADE Nut is one of the most important parts of the guitar that influences the performance, playability, and tone of the instrument. Depending on the quality of the material and elasticity, the nut can improve the sound or degrade the sound. Although bone nut is more costly and harder to work with, it is considered to deliver more balanced, clearer and smoother tone than plastic or eurite material. EASE OF PLAYABILITY 1 PIECE HARDMAPLE NECK The neck is made with one-piece hard maple. The neck is made with Canadian hard maple. With its hardness and strength it minimizes the movement and stabilizes the neck to maintain the original shape and condition. Also the one-piece neck minimizes the loss of vibration and maximizes the tone sustain and maintains the tone to lasts. Good point. Criminal has nothing to lose, he's already labelled a criminal in eyes of the law. You on the other hand don't need this kind of aggro over the festive period. Have you reported it to the police @prowla ? otherwise this thread is gonna run forever with everyone else getting angry and agitated which we don't need at Xmas time. Report it to the police and Facebook. Let them deal with it and move on to enjoy Xmas. Don't let this ruin your festive spirit.3 points

Here is my Sting tribute bass. It is a Fender FSR 70's Precision with a custom maple fretless neck made by Jon Shuker. All I can say is it looks absolutely beautiful, it plays beautifully and sounds phenomenal. I did have a set of rounds on it and it had plenty of mwah. However, as per Sting's own preference, I've fitted a set of flats and it sounds even better. It now has some of that Precision growl but also a tight, burpy sound.3 points

I use liquid Whiteout on my EUB, it comes in a pen format and you can make whatever size marks you want and it is easy to remove and doesn't damage your bass. Recently I ordered some stick on dots(non permanent) from Gollihur Music and got both the white colour and the light maple. I put the maple ones on my blonde DB and while I can see them they are not very obvious to anyone else. I have been playing EUB and DB for just over 5 years now and while I'm not particularly good I have played a lot of gigs with several bands using both instruments and do some vocals too and I use the dots as a quick reference once in a while as I'm playing but don't use them all the time. Some professional DB players have dots in thumb position for reference and I've never heard anyone criticize that. Re the suggestion that you shouldn't use dots or marks because you will come to rely on them I don't agree with that. I would argue that every guitar and EB I have seen, including fretless EB, have dots and other markers on them and I've never heard the argument that they are a learning crutch and are a bad thing when you are learning to play. If they are OK on those instruments why not on EUB and DB where people like me can sneak a peek just to check exactly where I am on the fingerboard, especially important when playing in a loud band. I haven't seen many guitar or EB players using the dots except as a quick reference unless they are beginners. Why make things harder for yourself, I use my ears and muscle memory for intonation but sometimes in the heat of the battle it's nice to have a visual reference. I am a bass player who likes to move a lot as I play and sometimes I need a look to make sure where I am on the fingerboard unlike many players who don't move much or use a stool while playing and the instrument stays in the same place relative to their body. Obviously I don't play in an orchestra, at least not yet, and I will have to change a few things if that ever happens. ...running for cover....😊3 points

As WoT says, it's four blobs singing opera that you can control. What he neglected to mention, however, is that the frequencies and patterns generated by the associated AI have been carefully selected to affect the brain's alpha-waves in order to make the user more susceptible to certain types of online advertising, and to assume a generally more relaxed attitude to issues such as tax avoidance by major technology companies. Now, I've had the boffins down at Earbrass Laboratories looking into this, and they have come up with a way to completely nullify these effects using a sophisticated and precisely engineered piece of headgear, constructed of high-tech thinly-rolled aluminium sheet. As you can imagine, these are in very high demand in the lead up to christmas, and usually retail for £129.99, but as a special offer to Basschat users, I have been able to make them available for a one-time special offer price of £39.99 plus admin fee through the Earbrass Laboratories' wholly owned subsidiary Grabber and Grabber (Cayman Islands) Ltd. Stocks are limited, so it will be on a first-come-first-served basis, and individual orders will be restricted to a dozen items. Thankyou.3 points

Letting go of this fantastic fantastic bass. It's in perfect condition and purcharsed March 2019 - upgraded Schecter straplocks. Not much to add, just feelers as I love the bass and I'm in no rush to sell. These kick over £1700ish so I think it's a great price for a quick sale - as new, Darkglass Tone Capsule pre, special custom delano pickups. Lightweight at 4.1kg I believe. Happy for collection if covid sensible otherwise shipping at buyer's cost. Comes with Fender gigback and paperwork.2 points

WITHDRAWN I am selling my Korean "ProSeries StarBass 5 Gold Metallic CHR passive/passive MAP fretted" (that's Warwick's description). I am trying to play fretless more these days and this is just not getting played enough. This is a passive instrument (no 9V batteries hurray) and is capable of "vintage" tones so it doesn't sound like a midrange-heavy solid-body Warwick. Serial number WPS B-000087-11 (2011 I think??). Construction wise, it has a solid maple block down the centre and hollow wings. The neck is maple (but painted in luxurious gold) and the fretboard wenge. This has Just-A-Nut III on it so is adjustable at the nut. (Just-A-Nut II was prone to breaking so the III is better). It has volume and tone for each pickup, and a selector switch in the style of a Les Paul (neck, both, bridge). I played this on 2 gigs but then the band disbanded and it's been safely at home for many years. As you can see, it is in tip-top/excellent condition, with the only minor issues being pictured: a. slight decoloration of the tuning pegs (someone must have had sweaty hands before I bought it) b. There is also a blemish on the neck paintwork but that's under the lacquer c. There is a tiny slight mark above the neck pickup d. There is a mark near the fifth fret that looks like a construction issue that was filled in. e. Some slight marking on the pickup covers where enthusiastic playing has likely bashed a string onto the pickup cover (but it's under the string and I think you’ll struggle to see it) All of these were like this when I bought it. All of these are pictured and I think you'll struggle to notice these. This comes with a colossal excellent Warwick hardcase to keep this safe. This isn't pictured but is included. It’s a very good case! I have priced this appropriately I think, given that it's a Korean Pro Series and NOT the Chinese RockBass series which seem to have increased in price somewhat (hasn't everything?), but sensible offers are welcome! I enjoyed playing this bass a lot and will miss it but I need to be realistic. I would provide sound clips but there's plenty of demos by Andy Irvine back when he was working with Warwick on YouTube, if not somewhat slap-happy. I am in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire and would prefer not to ship this as it's massive and I have no cardboard to package it. I am happy to drive up/down the M5 a bit if this helps you for travel purposes. Worcestershire is in Tier 2 at the moment so I cannot travel to other locations. Cash or Bank Transfer please. If you want to put it on a credit card and pay via PayPal you can but I shouldn't get any fees so you'll have to send it as a "gift" to friends/family. Thanks. This popped up in my YouTube feed the other day. I was blown away and can't stop watching it. A White Shader of Pale is obviously a song I'm aware of, but not really from my era. But I have a new found appreciation for it ….and Gary Brooker, what a voice! This was about 14 years ago, but still.... his voice seems to have aged beautifully compared to some contemporaries. The orchestration and backing is beautiful...just thought I'd share.2 points

I’ve had my two J&D mini jazz basses for almost a year now, and they’ve weirdly become my most played basses. One is fretted, one is fretless (fitted an ebony fingerboard meant for a guitar from StewMac, a project in itself!), both have Hipshot bridges (I love these, though putting them on a bass that costs less than the bridge might be a bit foolish...), CTS pots, GraphTech nuts, shielded cavities and TruOil’ed necks. The tuners were going to be replaced, but after I took them apart, sanded the underside of the gears flat up to a high grit count and screwed them down carefully, these things have been bulletproof - they seem to be better quality than the Sire tuners on my V3 (which stripped whilst DETUNING the low B!!!). I’m still on the original pickups, they sound more than fine to me (better than the Mikro 5-string I have, that I’m getting Bartolinis for). They’re both so comfortable to play, sound great (with the Hipshot bridges mounted just a bit further back and the fact they’re longer than the original, D’Addario EXL160S sets will fit with no wrapping issues), and are just so easy to play one finger per fret, so actually less tiring to play. If you’re after a cheap bass to mod the living daylights out of and try short scale basses, these are great for that and for little money. If you’re after a bass for your kids to play, it’s a good starting point (and you can nick it later for modding...).2 points

i play a lot in church and quite a lot of music is written for keyboard instruments so Eb crops up a fair amount and i like to be able to play the bass line as it was written (or at least try to) i also find that it is easier for me to transpose on the fly with my 5 string as there are so many more options of where on the neck to play. My next bass purchase will be another 5 string.2 points
-
I play 5ers pretty much exclusively as, for me and the music I play, it is an absolute necessity. I listen to a lot of Neo-Soul/R&B etc which frequently utilises notes below an E, plus I play covers with friends that often need transposing down from the original key to be comfortable for whoever’s singing. While the guitarist does mental maths for however long it takes to transpose the chord structure, I can simply shift the whole line down by however many frets and quickly get back to the enjoyable part of actually playing music. With this in mind, a 5 string isn’t just a “want” for me. It’s a necessary tool.2 points

What it really comes down to, is having the right instrument for the gig. A lot of modern shows have parts that are written in the lower range, so you need a 5 string to play what's written. Even in a lot of function band situations, you'll probably covering tunes that were played on 5 strings or synths. Could you get away with playing up an octave? Probably, but it depends on the bandleader. Some specifically ask for a 5 string, others don't care as long as you play well. I usually take a 5 string out as standard, but one band that I've been playing with stipulate that I use a Precision bass, so the 5's will stay at home. If you play in you're own band, you can do whatever you want and it's cool. But if you're playing lot's of different gigs you need to do what's asked of you, and in those cases you probably will need a 5 string at some point.2 points
