  1. Thanks folks! Yes - I'm really pleased. And yes, let's shed any pretence of false modesty, it's my 5th Kert, of this parish, started it all off by submitting the Camphor Single Cut I built for him. I'm sure that No Treble must think I have some small industrial unit somewhere churning these things out...let's hope they don't ever do a "Builder's Workshop" feature "And as we go down the stone steps to the dark small cellar space, taking up most of the available space pushed up against the wall is a single, small workbench. When asked whether this was all there was, Rogers replied that it was, in the words of Monty Python, 'LUXURY!' compared to the rickety Workmate sited at the bottom of the pond using nought but the brick he used to use!" Anyway, must rush - I have to stop strangers in the street to shout to them over the masked social distance to 'cop a look at the No Treble website.'

  7. Absolutely mint condition not even any rust on the corner protectors, no cat rash or damage at all. I have replaced the speaker with a brand new Celestion 400 watt Ferrite 15" speaker as the old one was a little scratchy sometimes. This is the flagship amp with 12 band switchable EQ, both tube and solid state blendable preamp, two band compression etc etc, she has all the gadgets and they all work. Shipping is £20 UK.

  10. IMO the best 300 watt head is a 500 watt head turned down a little. Especially if you are using a single 8 ohm cab.

  11. Im new to this type of pornography but I’ve just taken this one in a trade for my Alpher, only 2 months old and man it’s a corker. Just gotta learn to play a 5 properly. The build quality is mega and it sounds lovely too.

  13. And we have a winner! And I've got one, ain't I? Slightly (reversibly) modded because the original scratchplate's a bit ugly and the parts box was a bit full: Still have all the parts to put it back to stock, should I ever flog it. Which I might.

  14. So this happened! It's something I've been meaning to do for a while... I blame Ronnie Scott's live streams and José Riso on KJazz. More seriously I've been listening to the recordings we're in the middle of and thinking that despite its generally rocky nature, a fat, plummy tone might have worked well with some of the riffs. I know it's not exactly what the instrument is for, but figured I'd give it a go anyway. My god it's a different beast, my brain is scrambled and my fingers are raw, but it's fun. I downloaded a 3Sigma IR for the Helix, and for a quick start it sounds pretty good right off the bat! Can't help but feel I'm looking up a pretty steep curve right now.

  19. Nice bass indeed - the fingerboard has a brass laminate which ensures a very stable and flat neck. Good price too.

  20. Ah brings back memories! @la bam you weren't too far wrong about two months wages, I spent 2 months working nights in a warehouse in '94 to save up for my trace combo. Sadly it never left my bedroom and I ended up selling it about 8 years ago to my mates dad for all of about £200. I reckon it was probably the most pristine example of its kind out there. Just as well, though, as this coincided with when I started gigging on a semi regular basis... I'd be in a wheelchair by now if I hadn't switched to a lightweigh genz benz rig!

  23. I became aware of the Latourneau Maben Gold Top bass a while ago. In my opinion, a beautiful bass, taking styling cues from various iconic styles and blending them to perfection. I posted it in reply to a post on Facebook and then delved deeper into Latourneau. Oh my, do they make some beautiful basses, and other instruments. The craftsmanship looks absolutely top notch. Maben Gold Top The Maben is probably still my favourite style with its Rickenbacker top horns, Jazz offset waist and Gibson/Duesenberg-esque headstock, which is different on each bass. They all have slightly different hardware specs so I guess they're each a one off, but I don't know. Has anyone else come across them? Their website doesn't show a complete list of their basses, and I've found most through other sites and adverts, which leads me further to believe that they are built to the customers specs as and when they're ordered. I've added some links but if you do some digging it turns up some wonderful stuff. This 8 string is just stunning. I love the contrast of the walnut back and red front. I can only find this 8 string on their Facebook page, just scroll through the photos. Another beauty in a dark teal colour.

  25. So... ... Had ten minutes to play the new P. I like it a lot. That's just the sound really, isn't it? I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't prefer 32" but I'm pretty convinced that I'll cope just fine with this as is. Also, let's give Fender their due. This might be the first new instrument I've bought that I can't find a single flaw on!

  27. It's pretty poor that their work is virtually given away by Spotify. It's easy to see how bad it is, when I was a teenager in the 90's if I wanted to listen to my favourite band I had to go to HMV and but the album for £12 and Id buy a couple a week. Now I can pay £10 a month for unlimited access to millions of songs. I still like buying a physical copy of records but I'm very much in the minority.

  28. SOLD This is a stunning bass, very articulate and lovely neck to play. These are massively underrated instruments and I looked for a while to find it. Trouble is I am no longer gigging and I have too many basses and other hobbies now require funding! It is in excellent condition and comes with a non original hard case. I used it recently for some recordings and was complimented on it's tone and punch. Price includes delivery to UK Mainland.

  29. If you're looking for a head that sounds half as loud as 800 watts then 80 watts will suffice. Considering how small and light your RM800 is I don't see the need.

  38. I used to build and design hi-fi speakers before i started playing bass and moved to building my own gear for bass. interestingly Wilmslow, IPL and Falcon are still with us. I had a look at the Wilmslow kits out of curiosity and to me they seem expensive. Looking at the HB2 for £285 for just the components and £435 for the flatpack kit. £150 for a bare MDF flatpack looked expensive so i looked at the kit, the speakers are £45 for the bass mid and £24 for the tweeter so they are charging £127 for a crossover, port and a binding post on the back of the cab. I'm sure they have the design well worked out but the drive units are modest so I'd be pretty confident that a commercial built unit for £285 would be at least as good. If you paid for the flatpack I think a commercial speaker for £435 would be better. If you went for a used speaker then potentially you'd get best value for money. For example I found a number of Quad electrostatics on eBay for around £400, now they'd go nicely with your 33/303 if you have the space. Of course we don't just build for financial reasons, there's real pleasure in building your own kit and a lot of satisfaction when it works out well which you'd never get just buying something. My experience was that at the cheaper end mass production wins every time, but as you move up the quality range you start to make savings by self building. If you think you'd love to self build then I'd be looking for a published design and source the components separately. It probably would be cheaper and easier to buy something. Incidentally I think that things have moved on since 1975 and though the LS3/5A was a revelation at the time to me it was quickly overtaken.

  41. First post for a while! When I play in a band I play bass, but as I've not been in a band for 8 year's I've predominantly just been playing guitar and occasional home recording, only picking up a bass to do the bass part's then putting it back in the rack. The band is reforming once we can after lockdown, so I wanted to get my bass chops back up again. The 80s tastic pointy yamaha I use as my main bass doesn't really inspire me to play it anymore so I advertised it on FB and got offered a lovely Squier CV 70s 5 string Jazz bass which I picked up last week. Setup on it was horrendous, but after a full setup including nut dressing, truss rod and saddle adjustment it plays very well indeed and has really got me back into playing and practicing! I will putting more time into bass now as well as six string now as it's made me appreciate the bass again. I've done my first mod to it, installing a push pull switch to change from series to parallel. I once hard wired a jazz bass copy that I also own like that and it's a nice sound so wanted that option. Overall very happy with it. Anyone else got one of these? Any recommendations of other worthwhile mods? Pickups sound ok to me but might still look to change at some point.

  44. I'd just like to add I'm in no way connected to the company/luthier, I'd like to be because then I might get a discount. I'm seriously considering selling some stuff and commissioning something. It's been a long time since I've found a company that seems to tick all my boxes. Does anyone on here own a Latourneau, or know someone who does? Here's some more pretty pictures, because we all like pictures, right? (Some are guitars, sorry.) The following one is very @Andyjr1515 The rear access covers are just sublime, so classy. Lastly, a bit of volute porn especially for @SpondonBassed 😉

  46. Mutron III is legendary so should be on the list. The Source Audio Spectrum tries to copy it, so it would be good to see more examples of how close it can get. The Fwonkbeta is the best envelope filter in the universe*, so should also make the cut. * IMHO
