  1. Here it is, my new Zoot Jazz Maniac, exactly nine months after I confirmed my choice of Fraylin pups and chrome finish on the hardware. I knew it would be a long wait for it to be built, but I never expected to be still be lockdown when it arrived! So I was never able to visit Mike Walsh to see the bass under construction, or to collect it in person. I am indebted to itu for first suggesting Zoot in a long list of builders he posted here last June, that I explored during the first lockdown before settling on this Jazz Maniac.

  2. Happy new bass day. After having a particular crap time at the moment, I decided to treat myself. I've had my eye (ears) on the EMG gzr pickups for a while and for some reason after all the basses I've had, I've been gassing over a P/PJ bass. I saw this beauty in stock and took a punt. First impressions, I thought the box was empty it's that light. Came set up real nice, fretboard is gorgeous. Had a quick headphone jam whilst setting up a new preset in the stomp. I am very happy! Nice clank with the p pickups, lovely mid fart with the jazz, together a lovely clanky fart! Sounds great haha. Oh it's all black like my soul so very suitable.

I have all the original bits including the bridge tray It's had a full pro set up so stands me at £600 (not including the case).   4. Purchased from this very parish in October 2020 from @haimesy who bought it new. Unfortunately I have only played it briefly a handful of times; uncontrollable GAS and self imposed limit of 3 basses means this is up for sale. Sire U5 short scale bass in colour mint - £300 £280 collected or plus shipping, no offers at present. Excellent condition. Only noticeable marks are a small ding to headstock and a very faint mark near the truss rod adjustment on the mint green edge. Comes with basic gig-bag (doesn't fit great) that was new with the bass. Collection from Orpington BR6 (also possible at my parents’ place in Hendon NW4). Would consider driving to meet somewhere as long as it’s not too far. Postage now available via UPS at buyer’s cost. Many of you may have seen my Stingray Special I had up for sale recently but pulled down after there was a credible reason for mysterious appearing holes....wood worm, well actually they're not worms having since researched them to not quite death - they're more likely to be beetle larvae ! On closer inspection, what i thought were small chips were actually further holes - I've now counted approx 10 holes in total. 100% bugs and the little funkers clearly have the munchies. Great bass weight loss program! So I emailed both Musicman and GuitarGuitar. Both have been absolutely amazing.GuitarGuitar have spoken with Musicman who intend to replace the body and i will be sending the bass to GuitarGuitar (assume for assembly). Needless to say the bass is locked away in its case in a colder part of the house. I do remain slightly anxious the little funkers maybe out and about checking out my book case and woe betide any of my other basses - I will look to see if i can get anything that eradicates them at the weekend (tips please)...perhaps my closest religious affiliation is Buddism/Funkadelic but my inner peace will take a miss on this one.....the funkers shall rue the day! I shall await the next stages from Musicman but it's all looking promising....and it's looking promising that i won't need to sell now -sorry for all those interested, i never wanted to sell if I'm honest and i cannot praise GuitarGuitar enough for their support - always been impressed with their commitment to customer support. A further massive shout out to the BassChatter who alerted me to this known issue - i would have never considered this in a millipede years Bye funkers:

  8. I'm not a huge fan of slap either but i like it on occasion in certain parts of songs. I have a huge respect for those bass players that can do it properly. There's no doubt it takes a lot of work to master it and at the same time make it entertaining. I dont like to hear it when its just rapid slap and pop with no tune or melody of any kind. I enjoy this style of slap. Its melodic to my ear and just easy to listen to.

  9. Emperor's New Clothes? Absolutely. The differences in tone are pretty minute. The differences in feel are there, but are they worth the money? only you can say. In a recorded or live context, nobody will ever hear the difference between a decent Squier Jazz and a genuine '62 Fender, because the difference is tiny. If owning the 62 gets your motor running and you can afford it, go to it and good luck. There's no right or wrong

  10. I agree - looking for instrument demos and reviews on YouTube can be frustrating. Demoing a bass by playing a load of slap and some chordal stuff up the dusty end is not showing me what I want from bass. It's just showing off.

  12. Am I the only person who plays bass and generally hates slap? I think it can sound good when used sparingly (like Billy Gould or Tim Commerford) but I hate songs which are just slaps and pops all the way through. I really dislike songs which weren't slapped covered by a bassist who plays slap all the way through. I don't even like Primus. Am I on my own with this?

  14. Note.. will take offers and will split. Sadly I am being made redundant in May so I need to sell this amazing rig. I bought this rig in February 2020 just before lockdown. And it’s been sat since , apart from testing it out at home ! Never gigged or even been to a rehearsal, or even used as I have a home rig . Firstly the Handbox WB-100 all tube 120w head , it is a great powerful head much more power and tone than you would think possible at 120W but as it’s an all tube and not a class d amp 😊 Mesa Boogie vintage powerhouse 1x15 cabs these are great cabs 400w ratings each come with Mesa covers and casters for both still have tags on not sure of the weight but I can lift them easy into car. Looking for £1500 for the complete rig thats a lot of quality gear for the money . NOTE!! ..... will now take TRADES for a Bass prefer Jazz bass I will sell separately as I been asked by a few £650 Handbox WB-100 head only £850 for both Mesa Boogie cabs £500 for one Mesa Boogie cab Please Note! I am not selling the Wal it is just there for sizing the rig😊 UK only Collection Reading area although I can deliver if buyer pays fuel costs.

  16. So we have 19 gigs booked between June and Dec ( mainly Festivals ) and more coming in daily. I still think some will be canned but at least bookings still appear to be strong-ish. I am keeping my fingers crossed! EDIT - make that 21 now.

  17. That's fine. Some folk don't like jazz or can't stand classical music or opera, or death metal, or... You don't have to like everything and you'd be pretty unusual if you did. There isn't a right or wrong answer to any form of music. At the end of the day if you enjoy playing a particular style of bass and your audience enjoys listening to it, surely that's all that counts?

  18. Is the issue here about actually disliking slap bass, or is it really about disliking slap bass YouTube demos? You never really see anyone say that songs like Forget Me Nots, or Peg, or Never Too Much suck because of the bass technique. Mark King and Victor Wooten always unfairly get named in these threads. Both these guys have done plenty of work where they just sit back and play without all the flash, but you won't find it on the 1st page on a YouTube search. The suggestions that slap can't be melodic or creative is just laughable.

  19. Nicely put. Back when it was a new thing few genres were as inventive as hip hop. I mean just check out the production on the first few Public Enemy and NWA/Ice Cube albums. Cant abide the current vogue for mumble rap but I digress. I'm surprised to find such antipathy among BCers towards slap. I'm all for trying different ways a bass can be played rather than just sticking to pick or standard fingerstyle. By writing off slap 'n pop as a method aren't people limiting themselves?

Next it'll be "there's been no decent music since 19whenIwereateenager" or "kids nowadays don't know what good music is" or "it's just a racket now". Just the sort of thing old folks have said to their younglings since time immemorial! You can imagine old Granny Bach saying to Johann Sebastian "you don't want to bother with all that polyphony and harmony rubbish, what you want is some proper music like Gregorian Chants!"

  22. I think generally when we are young we are much more black and white in our views. I was very closed to liking one genre and didn't get that I could acknowledge a pop song as great as it didn't fit my image. I've always liked getting older as I am so much more comfortable liking what I want. And the other side of all of this is that some stuff I thought was brilliant actually wasn't anywhere near as good as I remember it.

  24. I think we have quite similar tastes. I was put off slap towards the end of the 80's when seemingly every local rock player started thinking every song in their set needed wildly unsuitable slapping and popping. It was truly nauseating. Dark, dark days, they were. There were some notable exceptions, as you say. Billy Gould, Tim Commerford for sure and I'd add Denis Pepa's sterling work on the wonderful Act III as players who could utilise the technique in a way which was musical and interesting, rather than the usual "HEY YOU LOOK AT MEEEEEEE!!!!" Youtube has become a cesspit of gratuitous thumb abuse though, thankfully, many of the preview pictures show the thumb in position over the strings and one knows not to bother pressing play. For all the talk of using it tastefully, when left to their own devices, especially on supposed "gear demo" videos, many bassists cannot resist spending most of the time sticking their thumb in places it shouldn't be. Horrible, just horrible.

  25. I don’t like the overuse of slap on demos on YouTube. Sometimes there is just too much especially at the beginning of the vid. If a vid starts with slapping I immediately move on to the next video. Apart from that the technique does have a place when it is tastefully used in the right place at the right time.

  28. I genuinely don’t get why someone would hate slap. It’s like saying you hate drums with toms or you hate the violin played without a bow, or even just like saying “I hate the sound of a picked bass“. It’s all about the musical context. Bass is part of the rhythm section & playing a good slap part that fits nicely with the drums is a thing of beauty. Yes, there’s many YouTube videos that sound like someone playing bedsprings with chopsticks, but there’s a lot of great stuff out there too. All I can say is stop being a musical snob & open your mind.

  32. No. I don't slap. Sadly, iIt's a technique I've never got to grips with. The bucket of spanners falling down the stairs that is modern slap just leaves me cold, but I love the old "thumping and popping" that Larry Graham invented.

When I first started playing reggae and dub it was kinda frowned upon by the people I was playing with to listen to any other genre , it’s crazy really, I used to keep it quiet that I liked peaches by the stranglers and public image. someone said to me a while back that they remembered that I used to like abba, I said, I still do 🙂

  38. This is me in a nutshell 😁 The only bit of slap I've ever liked was in RATM's Take the Power Back and a couple of songs from the Chilli's Blood Sugar Sex Magic record - If I hear the faintest bit of slap and pop watching a bass vid I'm off.

  42. This is it in a nutshell. I've had a few instances of people on eBay offering to pay me via PP and then "sending a courier". I simply tell them to give the "courier" the cash and he can give it to me directly in exchange for the item. Oddly enough, they never agree to the idea. Wonder why?

  46. That's an aptly visual quote 👍. The thing that gets me about modern slap is that I don't see how the players can possibly believe that their intention in those intense slap solos is more about making music than merely showing off. I have no doubt that slap requires talent in the same way as doing a hand stand while shaking maracas in ones mouth, but whether the listener believes it's musical is another matter. At some point in its history, slap crossed over from musical art to performance art.

  48. I love a bit of slap especially in funk, but I don’t like the machine gun frantic style , I didn’t fully appreciate it until I had lessons for it , i found it quite hard and very time consuming , it took a long time to get a few simple grooves together, I gave up in the end
