Up for sale my top of the line, hand crafted in Japan, Yamaha Bb2025x - as used by Nathan East, Leland Sklar, Amos Heller, Tony Kanal and Michael Anthony. Managed to get one in NOS a few months ago. Pretty difficult to find one of these days and still in mint condition. One of the most amazing basses I've played but have not played it often outside of the studio, where I tend to favour Jazz basses, so cutting a bit my collection. Hand crafted in Japan. A.R.E. and I.R.A. treated wood gives it a very broken in, and responsive feel. So a slightly belated NBD post - I recently picked up my Alpher bass which is one of the more recent basses that Alpher have worked with Tdog Customs on for the finish. I had been looking for a black sparkle finish for some considerable time, weighing up getting a bass resprayed along the way, but ultimately "took the plunge" to go custom with Alpher. It's not a plunge at all, and as ever with hindsight, something I should have done a long time ago; I couldn't be any happier with this bass and the whole process working with the gents at Alpher. I've followed Chris and Al's work for years and have always been blown away by pictures and videos, but when you physically play one... It's another level. Every aspect of the bass is better than I imagined; the craftsmanship is far and away the best I've seen, as is the tone. "Little" details like the inclusion of a branded hard case, and even a proper mini tool are also excellent. Chris kindly knocked up 3 scratch plates to keep it fresh periodically, and I'll add those photos on here as I change them for anyone interested. I could quite literally spend hours raving about Alpher as a company and the bass itself, but most of you probably know it all already, and are just here for the pics, so here's a few to get going!8 points

UPDATE The BC community moves in mysterious ways! I now have a name and FB profile for this guy - I'm going to give him time (and the benefit of the doubt) to square up with me. If he has indeed been scammed then that is his problem, not mine (I'm assuming he has informed the Police and has a crime number?). Refunding me is the legal and moral thing, let's see how quick it happens.8 points

(Another) New Spector Day! Arrived on Friday.... finally after a 9 month wait (partly due to Brexshit).... Spector Euro Classic 4 in solid red! Gorgeous colour and plays beautifully. Sound great through my Class D with headphones but haven't had a chance to play it at volume through a rig yet..7 points

Selling my Atelier Z Jerry Barnes M265. Top of the line, hand made in Japan, 70s style bass from Atelier. Bought new a few weeks ago and in literally "as new" condition. Fantastic instrument and craftsmanship, but selling as I'm much more of a 60s pickup position / alder body guy. Easily nails the 70s super jazz, Marcus Miller type of tone. It has an upgraded electronics package (including a passive tone knob), adding additional versatility. 70s type of sound but without the huge weight! (pretty light for an ash 5 string). Currently setup with quite low action with no buzz at all. Jerry Barnes (Chic's bass player) signature model. In my first “real” band I was def the weakest member. But not for long. I wouldn’t say I overtook anyone but I soon caught up. Was a good learning experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone, it soon pushes your limits further than you thought and makes you more proficient on your instrument of choice.5 points

In the illustrious words of Britney Jean Spears: Oops I did it again... Alan had an ACG 6/33 part way through build on the his website, I saw it, I wanted it, I sold my De Gier and I bought it (well, placed a deposit on it). It'll be a 6 string, 33" scale Salace E Type with an AI Holly fretboard, Ash body, ART maple burl top wood, 5K DFM pre-amp with an ACG RFB pickup in the bridge and an ACG PB in the neck. It'll have top wood dots down the neck with a triple dot at the 12th and 24th fret (if Alan can squeeze enough dots out of the remaining top wood). It'll be a set neck with Dunlop recessed strap locks, Hipshot Bridge and Gotoh resolite tuners with a matching headstock cap. Shaping up to be a right stunner! (As if Alan could even build anything that isn't stunning!) This will be the 3rd ACG 6 Alan would have built me within 2 years... Unfortunately I suspect it will be the last for a good few years, looking forward to taking delivery!4 points

I saw them in Wolverhampton on that tour. I'd been in the pub a week before and got chatting to some guy, and when I walked into the venue on the night of that gig, he was playing in the support band before Anthrax came on. During the break, I went looking for him in the bar and saw him chatting to some girl so I left it. The next time I saw him down the pub, he explained that the girl in question was a relative and if I'd only come and said hello then I could have watched the Anthrax set from side stage. One of many 'nearly made it' moments that my life seems to be sprinkled with ....4 points

Yesterday was all about metalwork. Most of the chassis hole are now drilled and/or punched. The PT leads will pass through the rubber grommets immediately beneath where it is mounted, but I need to finalise the points at which the OT leads will enter the chassis as they need to be away from the preamp area.4 points

I actually think it's the best place to be. I hate being in a band where I am the best because I get frustrated with people not putting the work in. I don't mind a trier but when you learn 3 songs properly for a rehearsal and half the band spend the week binge watching Netflix only to then show up and struggle with a 3 chord rocker, it's not cool. I think great musicians are always happy with a pretty good musician who is working hard, has a good attitude, shows up when they say and buys the odd pint at the bar.4 points

My Orange AD200B head which was funded by a chance pay out last summer. I did manage to use it for one show between lockdowns in November 2020 but it certainly hasn't had the use it would have had compared to my live schedule in 2019. The photo bombing drummer has been with me a lot longer.4 points

Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Made In Japan Natural - £999 shipped in a hard case in Mainland UK. Thats shipped, insured in a decent case. I'm finding shipping is expensive at the moment, so collection would save a good amount on this.. Took this in part ex a couple of weeks ago against a Spector. Last night a bass that I missed out on a few months ago resurfaced..... Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Made In Japan - 2007/2008. Natural finish. Set up very nicely, plays well with a medium low action (my preference). Good condition for a bass cracking on for 15 year old. 1 mark on the body and 1 on the neck binding (6th fret)are all that I can see that is worthy of a mention. Weight is - 4.46kg or 9lb 13oz. I have the pickup cover to include too. Will ship in either a generic tweed case or Hiscox case.4 points -
The best way to get better is to play with musicians who are better than you. If you play with guys vastly more experienced than you, then it’s going to be a steep learning curve on a lot of things – be it playing, writing, gear (hence your recent thread about buying a new bass) and performance, etc. One of the big advantages that you have if you have only been playing for four years is that you haven’t really learnt how to do things wrong yet! If you are in a band with guys who know what they’re doing then hopefully you will just get used to doing things properly, which will make you a far better player.4 points

If you weren't good enough to be in the room, you wouldn't be there. That said, surrounding yourself with people more experienced than you are is the absolute best thing to do if you want to keep learning and developing. I try and do it wherever I can, and the biggest leaps I've made have been from throwing myself in situations where I'm out of my depth and having to rise to meet them!4 points

Often I'm the least talented in the room but it's rare that i'm not the best-prepared... this goes a long way! There's so much to be gained from playing with musicians better than you, and i find very little pleasure in it being the other way around. It honestly sounds like you are a great band member... but never be afraid to voice any considered opinion you do have, even if it comes to nothing!4 points

I just bought a damaged B-Stock 6 string from Gear4Music on eBay, broken nut and 'knobs scoring marks in lacquer' that you can only see if you take them off, that was apparently enough for it to be sold for £110 instead of £429. It arrived today, I glued the nut back together and sorted the truss rod out (back bow). It is now utterly fine and i'm sat here wondering why G4M couldn't do that 10 min job and sell it for £275 or something. I intended to make a new nut etc but just wasn't necessary. So yeah here you go a 6 string fanned fret bass, new for £110 that is absolutely fine. I think someone at G4M has sausage fingers.3 points

Another +1 for the OC-5. Why?... TLDR: the OC-5 seems to give us both the OC-2 and the OC-3 pedals combined into one unit (and another reason for "5" = 2+3?) with improved tracking compared to both its predecessors and throws in an octave up. It's also been very competitively priced - you get a lot for your cash! What's not to like? That OC-2 sound As pretty much everyone else has already reported back on the OC-5 thread, it nails that classic "OC-2" sound with the -1 oct solo'd, which is great. Octave-up I didn't think I was going to particularly like or use the octave up, but I'm already won over. It's not a clean octave up in the way the Digitech Mosaic is, to give you an 8 string bass sound, but it definitely adds a bit "extra" when used with the -1 oct and a bit of -2 oct; both when the pedal is used by itself but also when combined with fuzz and / or filter. Easy to dial in a more 'Royal Blood' sound with a bit of clean (3.5/10), +1 oct (5/10), -1 oct (max), Poly setting at full range, pick into VTDI set for dirt. Tracking Very good at normal bass riff speeds, but will glitch if you sustain a note (which is not unusual for octavers). I actually prefer it in Poly mode over Vintage mode when I'm using both octave up and down simultaneously, as it gives me a cleaner overall sound and a touch better tracking. With other pedals Put it in front of a Red Ripper fuzz and Proton filter and it plays very nicely with them both, thickening up the sound just as you would want from an octaver. Pricing The OC-5 has been competitively priced by Boss at around £119 inc P&P. In fact, I can't think of another quality octaver that offers quite so much for such a good price.3 points

New to me anyway... it's over 20 years old. Brought from Danny at @bass_japan_direct I've use his pictures here as they do the bass justice. This is my first fretless bass in a while, and it's a beauty. I'd forgotten how much more tactile it is to play than a fretted instrument. Koa on Alder, with an epoxied rosewood fingerboard, with fret inlays, so I can get my Jaco on. No idea if it was originally fretless or not, but who cares. Edit: here's a demo of it:2 points

I have one (amongst its 9 other more expensive (some very much more) siblings. They’re great and sound exactly as a 2 band Stingray should - the string of cost saving measures are largely on body material (multiple, poorly matched pieces of poplar), no contours (so slab body as pre EB and Stingray Classic), neck finishing (covered with black paint - lack of hand finished fret end slots etc), body finish (textured) but the electronics and hardware are all standard (but unbranded hardware) US Stingray bits. Just remember the price of these has increased, and like with normal Stingrays, a lot of people prefer them stock! A good purchase though - they sound exactly as you’d expect a poplar bodied, rosewood board 2 band Stingray to.2 points

It was love at first sight, never picked up or played a Spector before and now I have, that's it, Spector's for me from now. It feels brilliant to play and sounds awesome. I couldn't be happier. I've owned a couple of Marusczyk's, and they're ok, if you pimp it out with decent Hipsot hardware, then it'll be on the way. But I didn't really get the feeling from those basses that they're doing anything particularly special. Fender, yeah fine, their QC has gotten WAY better over the last 5 years or so. But I find their new basses just a little bit uninspiring, I couldn't tell you why. Sandberg, similar deal, clearly got a lot going for them, lots of love, but they have just never done anything for me really. Where I settled was Lakland, in my opinion, their Skylines are on-par with US Fender stuff, and if you have the budget to move into their US Custom stuff, the necks are wonderful as well as a full pallet of custom options. You said you've checked them before, but was that one of their active models? Worth bearing in mind that they do make straight P and J passive models too. Still a family-run company too. I think the only place I'd go after Lakland would be G&L, they seem to be very decent for the price, even if they are a mild deviation from the 'Fender' aesthetic. Si2 points

I get your points about Mexican/Chinese made instruments, and Fender in general , which are valid and could be part of some bigger more meaningful discussion somewhere, the op is in US Fender Precision territory financially, and wants something that looks and sounds like a P-Bass, so my response is based on that really. I just don't see much point in looking at something that is nearly the same cost, unless he's really after something very specific that the Mcdoodlywhatsit has or does any better than a US Precision, which doesn't seem to be the case.2 points

Ditto. Wasn't really looking to buy, but the alert on here on Friday led me to buy the bundled BH800 & K-410 Cabinet for £399 as it just seemed ridiculously good value (and another K 410 for reasons I haven't fully worked out yet...)2 points
