I first saw / heard that bass in action in 1983 after bumping in to the band in a restaurant in Glasgow. After they'd finished their meal, I approached Mark to say hello, and to ask about his bass, which I'd seen in magazine pictures (remember, this was decades before the Internet- so information was obtained by reading magazines, and word of mouth). He said the bass was a Jaydee, and advised me that the unusual looking pickups were in fact, wooden covers, and not blade style polepieces as I had thought from the magazine pics). We chatted for a while, and he gave me John Diggens' telephone number. The band were playing that evening in the Locarno Ballroom in Glasgow, so I headed to the gig to see them in action. Mark's playing was an absolute powerhouse of a performance (at one point, he played a percussion / timbale break on a separate rig - which was unexpecte). The Jaydee looked and sounded amazing. Plus, his backline of the Trace Elliott 4 x 10 cabs, and the head illuminated by its ultra violet tube, looked fantastic. I was sold!! I called John Diggins the next day to chat about his basses. He said that Mark had spoken to him earlier that morning, and mentioned that a young guy from Glasgow might call. I ended up placing an order for a GA24 with black wings. That bass ended up being my sole instrument from 1984 until the mid 90s. As for Mark's red Jaydee basses, I got to play both the crescent inlay one, and his dot marker neck bass (one of which had been retrofitted with red LED markers, and the double ball bearing roller nut), at the Barrowland venue in Glasgow in 84 or 85. I met Phil Gould and had a bite to eat in catering with him. Mark was in London doing some breakfast TV interview, so wouldn't get to the Glasgow venue until mid afternoon. As a result, Phil and I had a quick jam, with me trying out both basses. I collected my GA24 bass from the upstairs Jaydee workshop in Moseley, Birmingham. Fantastic instrument. However, I always hunkered after a Series 1 (I had originally stayed away from that model as it was so strongly associated with Mark, and I knew I could never match his skill level). However, after all these years, I have now succumbed and paid my deposit yesterday for one of the basses). Yippee!11 points

Hi, With a very heavy heart I am selling one of the very best basses I have ever owned, it's only fault is that it has 4 strings and as I move to 6 strings it's getting less and less playing time and that's just not right. This thing sounds incredible; The bass has a Mahogany Body with a highly figured Bubinga top and a Wenge sandwich veneer in the middle, the neck is maple with Wenge stripes and this bass has an Ebony fingerboard. The headstock has a matching Bubinga face. Electronics wise we have 2 Delano SBC pickups and a 3 band Marleaux custom BC3 pre amp. Hardware the bass has a custom german made GTS bridge and knobs and german Schaller tuners and straplocks. Finish Matte Satin finish Neck measurements Scale: 864 mm / 34" Nut: 40 mm / 1.57" 12. fret: 55 mm / 2.17" 24. fret: 62 mm / 2.44" Bridge: 60 mm (2.36") / 20 mm (0.79") each string Everything about this bass screams premium, it's a beautiful instrument. I'll be very sad to see it go. Comes with the fantastic hard case shown in the images. The bass is very very light I don't have scales to weigh it, but it must be under 3.5kgs I can try and get a firmer estimate. Bass Buddha on YouTube has a great review of a 5 string version with incredibly similar wood combinations, just the top being different. https://youtu.be/z9Pqh1TV3tI Info on the Pups and Pre; Pickups - https://www.delano.de/sbc_4_he_s/sbc4_he_s_details.html Pre - https://www.marleaux-bass.com/fileadmin/pdf/Elektroniken-PDF-2020/Marleaux-Electronic-BC3-EN.pdf Collection from Newcastle Upon Tyne or I will post this insured, but this will be around £40-£50 depending on courier and delivery timescale in the UK. Europe I would need to investigate. Trades - Pics;8 points

I've taken the plunge and have ordered a new Jaydee bass for myself. I had a Jaydee GA24 previously, which was my sole bass from around 84 to 95. I always fancied a Series 1, so I've now paid my deposit - estimated 18 months until the instrument is completed. I had originally asked about ordering a bass a couple of months ago, and was advised that it would be August 21 before the next available order slot would become available. I've looked on the website (August 21) and the next available slot for new orders is currently estimated to be March 2022. Yikes! Ve orderd a Supernatural Series 1 with the crescent inlays on the fingerboard.7 points

For sale is my recently acquired Elwood 4 Jazz. Last year I had a bad fracture of my left wrist, had to give up playing and recently acquired bass locally in the hope that I would be ok to play but alas it's not to be so have very reluctantly decided to go keyboard synth route to satisfy my creative musical need. Bass was purchased by the previous and original owner directly from Maruszczyk . Ash body so quite a heavy bass Delano Pickups Passive Eq Ets Bridge No marks on the body that I can see, no fretware, lovely see through finish, logo has slightly worn off pickups. There are 2 marks / dinks on the back of the neck, just about noticeable in the pics. You can feel them, especially the one nearest to the nut but this does not affect the playability at all plus a mark at the top of the headstock Just been set up by Fretmarks in Belington, has a nice low action. Comes with original factory gig bag, book and truss rod and saddle Allen keys6 points

Watkins rapier bass This bass is ultra rare English made and unbelievable condition! It is missing truss rod cover and 3rd position on selector switch does not work but all other 3 do. You can go from deep thumping bass to high treble. Huge sound palette. No crackles. I have looked and ones in not good order sell for more. These is a little lacquer cracks but it is structural sound as a pound. Action very low with no buzz. Absolutely joyful to play. Nice and light short scale. One for the collection or to play live. I I can describe as going from a hofner violin sound deep and thumpy to a rik treble pickup on the other end. I have oiled the tuners and polished the body. Beautiful bass. Collect please from great yarmouth. Price is £700 Thanks5 points

Just as a counterpoint to my earlier post, the one enthusing about selling all your gear, it's already driving me clean up the wall and I am now popping over to the marketplace... I may be sometime.4 points

Here's a PJ body from bassparts.de, makers of BassLine basses in Germany. I listed this a few years ago and got flack from a couple of BC members, the first suggesting I was asking too much for a "no name" body (I was asking £90 at the time and provided info about the maker) and the other insisting it was a three piece body, when it's quite clearly two. So, let's try again. I bought this in 2013. It's alder, unfinished, two piece (see photo of bottom showing join down the middle), weighs 2.2kg and has a nice wooden cavity cover. Neck mounting holes have not been drilled. It was made by Bassline in Germany (https://bassline-bass.de/en/) and sold through their parts website (https://www.bassparts.de/). I paid 200 Euros for it, receipt pictured below. A bit pricey, but I was attracted by the unusual wonky stripe and the wooden cover. Alas, I never got around to doing anything with it. The first five photos are from my original listing, the next five I took today. The last one shows the makers photo. I've given it a very quick sand with a 180-grit pad just to clean it up as it's been sat around for a while and had picked up a couple of superficial marks. It would benefit from a proper sanding before finishing. £60 including UK postage.3 points

If you can find one cheap enough, they are great fun. One day I'll finish it by putting that P90 Serek style humbucker in it. For now. It's just good fun.3 points

OK, here's what I think I've found out: - Rank: based on post count outside Off Topic. - Great Content badge: based on number of received TLRTs. - BC Hero badge: based on number of replies given. - Watts: number of received TLRTs of the types 'Haha', 'Like' and 'Thanks'. 'Confused' and 'Sad' not counted. I may dislike them, but the phenomenon seems interesting in a psychiatric way. 😁3 points

I took the Sadowsky P5 with TI Flats to my gig last night, only to find out the band I was playing with play with their guitars tuned to Eb! I didn't fancy loosening my strings anymore due to their exceptionally low tension and the low action that is currently set on the bass, so I used the Simple Pitch effect set 100% wet, and the interval to -1 Semitone. Voila, entire bass tuned down a half-step. No latency that I could detect, the tone wasn't noticeably different (especially not in the mix), and it meant I could leave my bass tuned to E and therefore keep my action and tension as normal. Fantastic! I'd been skeptical of this in the past, but wow. Seriously impressed with the results. HX Stomp 1 - Higgie 0.3 points

As a user of Amplitube 4 which I got for free, and upgraded to Amplitube 5 for free and got the SVT bass suite for free, I spent $25 dollars on a Fender package which is the only money I've spend with them in around a year of using their kit. I find the installation process tiresome and confusing and had some problems getting it to work. I contacted online support and they responded in less than an hour explaining how to fix the problem. Yesterday I saw that I'd been given a free amp but couldn't see how to access it and there was nothing on the FAQs so I contacted them. Again they responded in minutes. I'm not sure where the support team is based but even though they are overseas the instructions both times were very clear. Amplitube may not be everyone's choice but there's a good few companies who could lean a thing or two from their costumer support.3 points

Not a gig, but last night's audition rapidly turned into a rehearsal. Now I've got at least three gigs with two bands lined up and more (gigs not bands) expected.3 points

You can only hear the differences because the bass is currently over-prominent. Once the bass line is at the proper level in the mix it won't matter, so you whichever ones is the most comfortable/easy/fun to play.3 points

Well well, after trying to play a HB, which I found difficult, I found this beaut on a FB group. sounds superb compared to the HB, and a bit easier to hold straight, and it looks the dogs danglies . tried it out with the band last Thursday to positive comments. ( clue to our music is in the name “The Elderly Brothers”) it came with a Beringer acoustic pedal, which I’ve yet to try. any other owners here ? feeling happy2 points

One of the main things was the 424x had chromes on it, which I really like. The 1024x had nickel round wounds on it. It did sound very good for lots of different genres but without being able to nail the differences I just preferred the 424x. At one point I strung them both with nickel round wounds and they sounded very close to each other. Ultimately I needed to make some space for an incoming purchase and I decided there was more resale value in the 1024x. So that was sold on and I kept the 424x. I have no regrets moving it on. Just think the 424x does everything I need at a much cheaper price than the 1024x. The Build quality was definitely better on the 1024x, neck construction, nut, different neck pickup But the 424x is no slouch and just really good work horse. Ultimately the 1024x was sold on to pay for a precision bass.2 points

You can't buy it new, though, there seems to have been only one single batch of them, and it's now been scrubbed from Yamaha's online catalogue. Now prices have climbed, people at least feel safe paying them because they know that they'll probably lose nothing on it if they decide to sell later on.2 points

I'm playing on the 18th, and will play the 5 string I bought in February. It will probably look pretentious given the likely simplicity of my lines, but the key message of this thread has been to stick with it until it's entirely natural so that's my plan. And I also find that I now want to learn piano. Who knew that the progression of strings would be 4-5-88?2 points

Many thanks for this evaluation, which is entirely accurate. To get the gist of our findings, the summary will most likely be enough for most musicians. The book helps with context and detail. Glad you find it useful!2 points

I am enjoying the fact that JD are far from flavour of the month on BC but the fact that they have a waiting list to get on their waiting list means that they are doing the busines. There is a big bass world out there I am aware that they do guitars as well. I guess they have to earn a living.2 points

Some more of my home made Tele endeavours. The bare wood was sprayed by myself at home (out of the kitchen window in my apartment!!) in nitrocellulose lacquer. The Andy Summers tribute is currently owned by my brother. He tried it out shortly after it was completed, and said, "you're not getting this back. I need to buy it from you). I'm now working on another one as my next covid project build. Target burst on the body will be sprayed in the tone few days if everything goes to pla.2 points

I tend to make instruments when I'm bored at home. The lack of gigs during Covid has meant I've been tinkering with 6 string guitars This was completed yesterday (PRS McCarty humbucker in the neck position, custom wound flat pole tele pickup in the bridge. Gotoh "in-tune" saddles, USA Bigsby B5 trem)2 points

I see you’re using rhe bass cut engaged then boost the bass a little on the Noble. That’s where it really shines I think. It just shifts the low end to the sweet spot.2 points

I've just watched the ZZ Top documentary on Netflix, it's a great watch. Just 3 humble guys who wanted to play their stuff. The sad part being now that Dusty Hill, who like the others comes across as a really lovely person, isn't with us anymore He leaves a fantastic legacy2 points

I don't know if I ever posted my main pedal board on here but here it is. Dual input with FX loop and tuner out mute courtesy of the Bright Onions looper and all power by the Noble DI. Sounds great, in a 70's funk / soul kind of way if you like that kind of thing2 points

Good choices. I’d like to hear the bass on any of the tracks on Never Mind The Bollocks by The Sex Pistols. Not to learn them of course, managed that 40 years ago, I’d just like to hear the bass tone as it fits so well with the other instruments.2 points

Findings to date I really didn’t know the fingerboard as well As I thought. 5 def helps with this Lakland make a lovely instrument I really love the bartolini pickups with the John East preamp, it just works as a set up. I think I will always be a bass player who owns a 5 string, rather than a 5 string bass player. The 5 string version of something I’ve wanted to try for years came up recently... but another 5 string? No thanks. (Probably if the 4 string equivalent of my Lakland came up I wouldn’t mind switching, not that I’m looking for that) my realisation of how limited I am musically led me to start learning piano. so overall positive!2 points
