  1. Picked this up in bass direct today. Couldn't resist after a couple of hours playing it. Its got a super low action, amazing B, punchy as flip with 2 single coil EMG. I beleive it to be an early model. Spec: Flame maple body, Cocobolo top and back, Gloss natural finish,Flame Maple/Wenge through neck, Ebony fingerboard with maple edgeing It needs some work, but nothing that affects playability. Finnish related stuff. I plan to restore it to original as far as possible. Chuffed. X

  2. Well. Gas is cow poop. there. In 1997 I started on a Yamaha bb300 with a reverse P pickup. I played (eventually) into a Trace Elliot combo. With 12” speaker. After £10,000’s of buying and selling… Im back at a yamaha bb350 (actually a 350f but with frets added…) And something of TE lineage with 12 band eq on the way. Into a 212. I’ve wasted my 25 years of playing. all I’ve added into the equation is a j pickup at the bridge and an extra 12” speaker. Oh and about 200/250w. Im such an idiot 😂

  4. Bought new by me in Sept 2018. Good condition, well looked after, and just minor signs of use over 3 years - nothing nasty. The case has marks on the front from tight storage. Weighs 8.64lbs (3.92kg).. Some of these go up to 9.5lbs or more, so this one is a good weight for a HH Special. Back in 2018 the bodies were listed as swamp ash, now it’s just ambiguously stated as ‘select hardwood’.... Has a neck to die for, is roasted maple and a great shape. The tones are plentiful with the HH and the new revoiced EQ which is incredibly versatile and useable across the full sweeps. This is far and beyond the most ergonomic Ray they have released, very comfy to hold. No trades please, I’ve just cathartically sold 2 other high end instruments and am feeling like my bass chi is back to optimum 😁 My feedback - https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/216739-feeback-for-chiliwailer/

  5. Picked this up from Bass Direct yesterday... Well, more accurately @Bunion picked it up for me as the M25 was shut due to am accident. Anywho, here it is! The world's lightest 4x10 cab. 1200w with a tweeter and only 15kg. Will be giving it a test run later today, but it looks great and is an absolute pleasure to move around at a mere 15kg! Incredible.

  6. Of course there's sunshine, 's Cornwall innit. 🤔😆 Black scratchplate I'm afraid, predictable but suits a white BB perfectly. I've gone for solid black rather than three ply black/white/black though, I like the retroness of a solid plate, plus the BB X's are busy enough without an extra white line. Here's the pickup surround flipped over, it hasn't got as nice a finish but it's perfectly acceptable. A quick mock up of the all new BB424XR, will rebuild tonight or tomorrow.

  9. I think it looks pretty cool long like that. I felt like growing my hair out once some years back. I'd left the police - so kept short - and fancied a change. My hair is naturally very curly and I thought I would look like Carlos Santana. 😎 But in the end I just looked like my mum. 🤣

  10. Slow beginnings…… Frets are almost dead, so will do a refret (assuming I can do the fix). Frets came out without too much fuss. Also made a small start in getting the neck ready for the new “head” to be glued on. Mainly to check there are not further hidden cracks. I will make the angle even shallower to ensure I have as much surface areas as I can for the glue up, but need to know how the hardware sits to get it spot on.

  11. This is an interesting bitsa bass I built around an old ‘78 US Fender Precision bass body I came across. The intention was to use a Status graphite neck however being a cheap skate I ended up putting an Indonesian Squier maple neck on it that works really well. It has a 70’s Fender decal replacing the Squier logo and a set of Hipshot tuners. It plays very nicely indeed and is currently set up with D’Addario flats. The pickups are a Fender Mexican P Bass taken from a 50s reissue and a US Jazz. It’s wired as a simple two volume, single tone circuit and you can get characteristic P or J sounds from the individual pickups and some nice variations when using both. The body itself was stripped many years ago and an oil finish applied. The ID stamp remain in the neck pocket, the enlarged control cavity has been well shielded. The screw pattern under the scratchplate matches the plate from my 77 Precision and there are no extra screw holes. The tortoiseshell style scratchplate is a reasonable quality replacement and has some extra holes drilled into it. The bridge is the threaded 50’s type that gives you better adjustment for string spacing. It’s top loaded of course. Importantly the body is not a boat-anchor compared to many of this era. The whole instrument weighs in at 4kgs. I’ve used this a lot as it’s a lovely bass to play, the neck is excellent - a surprise to me in fact as I haven’t played a maple Squier neck of this type before. The nut width is slightly less than my 77 P bass and around the same as my JV. I’m not looking for trades. I am open to decent offers as I’m not sure how to price it. Cash on collection would be preferable but I can post within the UK. If anyone wants to buy the body on its own pm me with an offer as someone may have an original ‘78 neck out there. Thanks for looking.

  12. 2006 Fender USA Precision Bass Butterscotch I have had this bass for about 10 years and it has seen very little use, never been out Gigging so condition is 9/10 Some swirling to the back and the scratch plate , one tiny match head dimple on the back and a very small dent to the lower edge but otherwise great condition. Nut width is 40mm and a very comfortable neck, fret wear is minimal. It has the S1 switch, everything works as it should and the neck is quite straight, good action and a Joy to play The grain can be seen through the finish, weight is 9lbs 4oz Comes in the original moulded case which has plenty of scuffs marks on the outside but otherwise functional Selling due to recent acquisitions and sale only so no trades, sorry, was hard to pick one to sell 🤔 Price includes delivery to UK Any questions guys please fire away..

  17. Very late to this thread. I am a now retired metal bassist, played in original metal band for 15 years or so, from '88, we were probably in our 'prime' around '92 !!!!😆😆 We were attempting to be Metallica meets Kings X meets Alice in Chains, and thus managed to get nowhere near any of these. I exclusively used a Washburn MB5 bass into a Hartke 350 watt head into a Peavey 4x10 ( which weighed more than my car), and it was a great sound!!! When we reformed I used a Warwick Corvette, now stupidly sold. Now I spend my days noodling on blues rock originals at home with the guitarist from the aforementioned band, mostly on a recently acquired Ibanez mezzo bass into a Fender rumble 40, having done my time in a dad rock covers band.....the soul sapping years.....😆😆 Anyway, photos...., the beast.. and the new guy

  18. We have some really stellar bass builders here in Sweden: Anders Mattisson, who builds for Henrik Linder (Dirty Loops) and Janek Gwizdala is one. Another one is Christian Olsson, who has built for Mark King among others. His company is called Unicorn Bass. There are others too... I have just placed an order for a custom instrument: my very first such. So now, Unicorn Bass is building me an all passive no frills tone monster, a bass to play - not to display. I am really thrilled, since I've never owned an instrument built especially for me before. Unicorn has some models that are custom shop in all aspects; this one, called the Purist, is the bass to use if you don't want any fancy stuff, if you prefer passive electronics, bolt-on neck and straight ahead solid foundation. The neck profile, number of strings, spacing, body wood, pickups and their placement and finish are made or chosen to my liking and preferences. I.E. all that counts for is custom made.... A month ago I visited Christian Olsson in his workshop and tried some of his instruments: both Artist Series and the Purist, but really fell for the simplicity, yet versatility, from the Purist. Now it is just some months wait for the beast to be born... Pic's will come. Here is the link to the Unicorn site: https://unicornbass.se/site/

  19. Unwanted musical retirement means i have to reduce my collection of gear.First up is my Dingwall Combustion.i bought this from bass direct about 3 years ago.It has the Darkglass preamp fitted(same as ng model) and the original is included. It comes with the top quality Levys gig bag and 2 new sets of strings The bass has been signed by Sheldon Dingwall and Nolly Getgood.I dont really want to ship the bass as i have poor experience with lots of the couriers. Other items of gear will follow this one.cheers Further to some questions. The weight of this bass is approx 8.5 pounds as measured on kitchen scales The pickups are the original ones from new. A few more photos Ill be in the Dorset area for a couple of weeks from 4th september in anyones interested in this bass.cheers. THIS BASS IS NOW SOLD.

  22. NOW £400 cant drop any lower. Price new for this model plus the upgrades is way more than £400, so a huge deal to be had here Here we have an as new SUB4, mahogany body, matt sunburst finish, maple neck in perfect 'as new' condition. I have been through a bit of a Musicman phase and now have 5 and really need to get the critical 'ray mass down a tad. I have a lot of experience of setting and modding guitars and this has has some subtle usable mods which definitely lift it out of the range of your average SUB4. 1. bridge. I cant stand the big plate entry level bridge on the subs. This is a decent facsimile of the smaller plate version and looks far better imho. 2. Pickup: Bartolini poleless musicman pickup. Great tonal upgrade to the stock. 3. Coil selection switch series/single/parallel. TBH this is such an easy mod every stingray should have it. Series mode gives a bottom end boost without too much loss on the high end. Single is like bridge Jazz bass mode, parallel is like the USA basses (standard SUB 4's are wired series i have found) New versions have a basswood body so this is a standout version having the mahogany variant. The wood gives the sunburst more of a tobacco inner colour as opposed to a bright yellow. A better look imho. Overall finish (fret ends etc) is excellent. Bass is ungigged and will come with its original sterling by Musicman soft gig bag. If you are considering a SUB4 anytime soon, buy this. If you live somewhere close-ish to London I can deliver for petrol monies. Shipping via UPS insured will be about £35 - £40 Or, Pickup from Rochester Kent.

  23. **PRICE LOWERED TO £1500** Beautiful Stingray Special which is almost unused. This was bought new in February this year and I acquired it not long after via this site. The bass itself is a fantastic instrument with a lovely smooth roasted maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. The natural finish isn't too common on the Specials and this is a fantastic example. Its set it up with a low action and it is honestly one of the easiest and most comfortable basses I have ever played. 2 Humbuckers with a 5 position switch giving a huge range of classic 'Ray tones and more. The powerful 18v pre-amp allows for precise EQing with loads of headroom. The hardcase has a few external marks but nothing drastic. I would prefer pick up and would be happy to talk about meeting up. Have kept the box it was delivered in so can use that for a courier for an agreed fee as well (UK only please). Will consider Trade for an Ampeg SVT and cash adjustment.

  26. Yes, probably. The BB P pickup is nearer the neck than a standard P bass, and I've reversed them and moved the whole unit towards the neck around a further 10mm. I did work with it out further back in this thread but I think the EA is still nearer the bridge than a standard P bass, I can't remember. There's been no big plan really, just that reversing the BB P made it too close to the scratchplate so I moved it forwards a bit. The Mark Hoppus looks to be a lot further forwards.

  28. I'm now running this with a newly acquired Kemper Power Rack and Controller obtained from @thommydonuts earlier today. Only ran it at 'house' volume but it sounds fairly epic. The Darkglass 900 and Aguilar DB751 profiles are great, and the on board effects are, well, comprehensive to say the least! @la bam - It's an odd one, the weight makes you feel like it's fragile, but it really isn't! My prior Mesa rig weighed near 140kg with the covers and my Helix, this rig is 25kg with rack case, cab cover and pedal while being just as (if not much more!) versatile.

  42. I met Norman Watt Roy after a Wilko Johnson gig we ended up having a few drinks and mainly talking about basses as you do. It was JJ Burnel for me I went to see The Stranglers back in 1977. I was 15 I remember saying to a man who was standing next to me what type of guitar is that he said that’s a Bass son and that was it for me.

  44. Just back from a long gig playing Grateful Dead music to an attentive audience in the garden of a country pub (which happens to be about a mile from where I live). Six piece band went down very well, though we need to check our set lengths. First set was estimated to be 45 minutes but ended up at nearly twice that. Great fun.

  45. I did a little side by side when I briefly had both. The Red Ripper can get close to The Prunes sound, but the prunes is wilder and squelchier (for want of a better term) it is far more synthy. The Red Ripper can do a whole lot more as it can cop big muff sounds as well as sounding like a brassmaster, it's all to do with the RIP control. I sold the prunes to get a 5 string Yamaha, then bought the red ripper, and once again sold it to get other things. I did compare with some fuzz/filter settings on the C4 which were close enough to make selling them easier. I do wish I had the disposable income to just keep things 😂

  47. About 2 months ago - bbp35 bridge appeared on the marketplace. @lee650 hated the stock 425 bridge with the mad little extension. Between us, we sorted it being on his bass. I did it yesterday and delivered today in a hail of IPA.

  48. Hello all I am a new member on BC and was pointed this way by @Reggaebass. I thought I would share this that I only found on YouTube within the last week. The user appears to be creating their own dubs and also editing videos to run alongside the music. This one for Django is brilliant it drags the whole film in ...and I really like this dub of Eek-A-Mouse's Anarexol. Plenty more on the channel.
