So... this was a bass I was watching with a very keen eye on eBay last week. It's a ZAK bass, which, from some of Mayones history information, seems to be an export brand name used by Mayones in the mid nineties... check out this old catalog page for instance... vintage! The ZAK branding appearing in the upper right of the page. And here's Mayones founder at a trade expo showcasing the basses in the early nineties... So for the moderately small sum of £215 I got; The Zak BeJJ BO4 bass £? A new Warwick Rockbag worth £70 A brand new unused 5 Pot pre wired Bartolini preamp HR5.2AP/918 worth £145 Ernie Ball replacement knobs worth £13 So already a bit of a good deal all things considered...BUT... this just isn't a cheap bass... it can't be, the quality for a start is superb, for a bass that must be 25 - 28 years old it's oozing quality parts and timbers. The body wood is Etimoe, which is highly curved and shaped, very much like the early Warwick Basses, note the matching control cavity cover and look at this cuuuurve! The timber also has lovely figuring and good matching, and is solid, very solid. Speaking of Warwick Basses... I was pleasantly surprised to see this... I thought, a ha! a fake Warwick Bridge... but no, a Schaller Bridge manufactured to Warwicks Design! Again really solid, nice and heavy, very classy. The neck is a 5 piece, if it's maple it's very dark, possibly cherry / mahogany but I can't see it being much else, stringers are either Wenge or Ebony, but again under the lacquer they're very dark, stamped number 54. Japanese Gotoh tuners. Matching headstock veener cap and truss rod cover. Plastic nut, Wenge fingerboard and mother of pearl inlays. I'm currently stripping the lacquer off the bass as it's very very thick and glossy which I can't stand and I'll be giving this a brief sand before oiling and waxing the finish, but from the parts shown above the bass has the following hardware; Japanese Gotoh Tuners Schaller / Warwick Bridge & Tailpiece MEC active 2 band EQ MEC active jazz pickups it's a super looking and feeling bass, with a little TLC i'll get it looking a little fresher and hopefully for £215 have myself a bloody bargain at long last! I'll be doing a refin build diary over in the build diaries forum for anyone who wants to track that. Cheers!14 points

My NBD arrived yesterday - a rather tasty MM Bongo. Plays beautifully and looks the biz - it has a subtle light sparkle in the colour!! The fretboard is roasted and figured maple and there’s no pickguard. It appears to have taken exactly 10 days from build to reaching me - this was a direct order through their ‘Vault’ on line system - as was the long scale TC passive Stingray I bought - seems to be a seamless process. I’m sure it’ll be first choice for wedding gigs 😀14 points

Owing to Old age and looming Home downsize I am reluctantly selling my Stunning Gibson SG Supreme in very good condition. This was the first of the " Gibson Guitar of the Week " Series and was limited to only 400 Worldwide. The Flamed Maple cap gives this a distinctive tone with more highs than the standard. It has had a brass nut fitted and is strung with LaBella Flats Comes with original Gibson case in very good condition and truss rod tool. Any trial more than welcome. Its Collect only from me in Leeds -- ( I Will not post it ) I live Very close to J46 of M1 and close to A113 points

A beautiful original US 1977 Fender Mustang bass with maple fingerboard and stock natural finish. Great condition, functions and plays superbly with a punchy sound. It’s strung with Roto medium scale strings. At some point in its life it has been strung as a lefty as there are filled areas for strap buttons and some side position markers which have also been filled. These do not get in the way when playing. Truss rod works fine as do the electrics. It’s a great vintage bass for those with back or shoulder issues as it weighs a mere 3.3kgs! Very comfortable to play and has a nice clean look to it. There is no thumbrest as this must have got in the way of the lefty’s pick technique It has the matching serial number sticker under the scratchplate, pots and wiring appear stock to me and the grounding plate is still in the control cavity. A rare opportunity to get your hands on a Fender short scale vintage classic. The Mustang actually uses medium scale strings as it is through body strung. Sorry no trades and no sales outside the U.K. I’m selling lots of stuff I don’t use owing to a house move (although most of the vintage Vox/Jennings gear is staying). It comes with a contemporary non-Fender case. Postage can be arranged but pickup definitely preferred.8 points

I know there's not a lot of love for these here, but after a lot of dithering, I've finally got myself a nice vintage style Precision, a Nash PB63 with Lollar pups. Popped it's cherry last night at rehearsal, and it's definitely a goer. Sounds like a P should (first thing I did was put Labella flats on), and plays very nicely indeed. Neck is spot on for me, very comfortable. So much better than the '78 US P I had in the 90s. It's well built, the tone pot is superb, but I have to say the relic finish isn't as convincing as on my Custom Shop 60 Jazz. Very happy with it so far though.7 points

This bass is one the best non active jazz fender made which is not USA. It is flat black . Mint apart from a small mark on back and extra strap lock button fitted professional job. Comes with a gig bag. Loads of powerful tones from this now rare super jazz. This has had a neat mod, which is a 3 way switch (1st pot) seems to give it more oomph and the jack moved underneath, all very very well done, thought it was factory until i looked at the others! I have by mistake underpriced it looking at reverb so no offers on it .. thanks7 points

This has just arrived from Bass Direct: My god it’s lovely. Only had a brief play as need to get my son from school but the flat tone is just spot on. All the controls are solid, the amp operates supremely quietly and I can see the EQ has huge versatility. Cannot wait to get it out in the wild and really get to know it properly.7 points

Hello, - the BB is now reserved - I am selling this wonderful Yamaha BB2024 / BB 2024, the high end of the Broad Bass series. This model is considered as one of the best P/J basses out there. Now discontinued, it was carefully made in Japan by mister Kobayashi, and cost 2.900€ new. It is in excellent condition. Comes with its original Yamaha hardshell case and all the certificates. Weights a light 4.1kg 40mm nut width Fingerboard radius 10" (250mm) Nickel silver frets D'addario EXL160 strings : nickel wound 50 . 70 . 85 . 105 Alder/ maple body and quartersawn maple / mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard IRA and ARE treatments do the job : endless sustain and great response as on a vintage bass. The pickups are superb, the 3 way switch allows an uncompromised Precision sound, a more compressed P/J tone, and even the J is useable on its own. Only selling this as I have a BB1200s and have found a BB2024MX (Oooooooooooh !!!!) with a maple board. This is truly one of the best basses I've played, but I can not justify keeping it. Asking for 1450€ / £1250 Based in Northern France. Shipping at buyer's cost, safely packed and insured. I know there are extra charges between the EU and the UK, sorry for that.6 points

Purely aesthetically, the necks need to be swapped. Black and maple is a winner, as is 3TSB with rosewood. Maple fretboards paired with 3TSB just doesn't work for me.6 points

Latest update: The plastering got done in a day and took over a week to dry fully, even with the window open! The walls are really out of kilter to in parts, there was quite bit of plaster that needed to go on. Finally got round to painting when it dried. Bought some Leyland trade emulsion. BIG MISTAKE! I was hoping to use my Wagner spray gun but the paint was full of small lumps which continually blocked the spray gun. Eventually decided to use a roller instead. One mist coat and one normal coat did the trick. Toyed with the idea of giving it another coat but it didn't really need it. Bought the flooring second hand from Gumtree and bought the 7mm Royale Sonic Gold underlay which is the top of the range underlay for both soundproofing and temperature insulation. Flooring going down tomorrow.6 points

Rob Allen Mouse. It's all @Frank Blank's fault. After playing his at a SE Bass Bash, and finding one at a great price, and receiving much appreciated advice from the aforementioned Mr Black, I have one of my very own. I did sell it to @Clarky at one point, and regretted it, but fortunately he was gracious enough to sell it back 😁6 points

Lovely semi hollow bass guitar and sounds fantastic but due to money troubles this bad boy has to move on! In good condition just surface scratches no real dints or cracks and sounds Bob on! Frets seem fine and could just do with a set up to your own liking One of the pickups isn't working. I don't know if its a wiring issue but I'm sure with knowledge it can be fixed Epiphone rivoli bass 90s also listed single pickup would trade both basses for one5 points

Hello, - Please note I do not have the gear to make proper soundclips and tone comparison - This is purely subjective. The difference between a rosewood and a maple neck has been discussed all over again. I have always tended to prefer a maple board, with which I have a better feeling. Yamaha is well known for its consistent build quality. The Yamaha BB2024 and BB2024x series are particularly consistent from one to another. I have spent ages searching for a maple board Yamaha BB2024MX, and have found one to compare with my BB2024 (now on sale, as the MX was quite pricey) Specs : The BB2024 weights 4.1kg the BB2024Mx 4.1 to 4.2kg Both happily built by same guy (m. Kobayashi) Strings : both have new D'addario EXL160 nickel round wounds 50 . 70 . 85 . 105 I have tried to set them up as identically as possible, including the pickup height Testing conditions : I have compared them many times at low volume on a Phil Jones briefcase at home, a very clean and faithfull little amp. I have spent a few hours playing both on a Fender TB1200 head with a 2x10 and 15 cab. Feel : The BB2024Mx seems to have more high mids and very deep lows, as if it was EQed a bit, with a little cut in the low mids The BB2024 rosewood board feels like it has a more linear tone, but does not lack any of the overtones the Mx has. I thought the rosewood grain did dim those a bit. It seems it does not. Switching from one bass to the other - especially with the Precision pickup only, to which I am accustomed - they feel different. The Mx maybe a bit brighter, more aggressive, and the rosewood has a little bit more of that big punchy hump in the low mids the Precision lovers do love. Both are really similar, and the Mx is the one I prefer considering the looks, the fingerboard wood, and the rarity on the market, but the BB2024 with the rosewood fingerboard actually, and oddly, feels a bit better to me. It may have something to do with the setup. Maybe the BB range was designed to be bright enough with a rosewood board, and is perfectly balanced like this. Maybe the difference is not related to the fretboard. That is absolutely not a scientific approach. I would have liked to have the gear or know someone locally to make a comparison video, but I will probably have to sell the 2024 beforehand.4 points

I’ve managed to get hold of a 361 rig. It’s in great nick for a 53 year old amp. A little dusty and grubby rather than damaged. I’ve given it one clean but it needs a going over with a nail brush I think. It also had the top grill missing so I’m in the process of making one. Just need to bend the aluminium frame.4 points

This is my wickedly good boxer bass, that I'm looking to sell to help fund future recordings. It was a recent purchase from Bass Direct that hasn't left the house since it's purchase. It is in imaculate, comes with a fender soft case and plays like a dream IMHO. Trades? Poissibly a cheaper Precision + cash but cash preferred. Bass info and stats: Best of both worlds Precision Bass x Jazz Bass. The Fender Boxer PJ Bass combines Fender's most iconic bass designs into a single tonal monster. The 3-way pickup switch allows you to instantly switch between any combination giving you the tones of both, whilst simultaneously offering the ability to combine them for a raucous new tone. The 34'' scale length with 20 jumbo frets gives you unparalleled sustain and ensures a rich and rounded tone. The 12'' radius of the fretboard makes fretting remarkably easy and means even fiddly parts become easier to play. The PJ Boxer really is an amalgamation of the ebst qualities of both the Jazz and Precision Basses. Boom AND Bark The age old debate of Precision Bass pickups vs Jazz Bass pickups still rumbles on, why choose a side when you could get both on the same bass? 'P' pickups have a generally more rounded high-mid and treble range, while J pups have a sharper tonal response. Having both of these differing tonal palettes available on a single bass gives you a remarkable level of versatility to utilise. Use the punch of the P pickup to easily cut through even the densest mix, alternatively, get more articulate attack and razor sharpness from the J pickup. For modern bassists, versatility is often key and the Boxer PJ has it in abundance, there will be no tone you can't access with this intuitive pickup combination. MIJ-quality Japanese-made Fenders have always carried a mythical reputation. Due to their comparative rarity and consistently flawless build quality, they've always been held in incredibly high regard. The Boxer PJ proves that legacy is well-earned. Coloured headstocks can often be a giveaway and the black gloss polyester finish here lend a deluxe, top-end aesthetic to the instrument. The choice of rosewood as the fretboard material acts similarly, a tougher wood fits perfectly with this design as it adds sustain and resonance for superior performance. With an 'MIJ tag, you are assured quality craftsmanship. I've been working on a few ideas during lockdown. As I design first and foremost for my own use, I've been trying to push the boundaries of what's possible while still keeping the cabinets compact and relatively affordable - and trying to make them look great. Basically, I deserve the best (!) and that's what these will be. That's it for the moment. As I have a full-time job and a family to keep me busy, they'll be ready when they're ready. And I promise you lot will be the first to know.3 points

I've been rehearsing with another band ( after last night decided to can them) but arrived early at the rehearsal studio close to me to hear the sound of guitar being played through FX. Sounded tasty and it was the guitarist from the band I'd been rehearsing with in another unit close to the studio and the door was open. I walked over and asked if it was an extension of the studio to be told no it was Reef's storage place for all their gear and the guy with the guitarist was their sound/tech guy who I was introduced to. I said hi and mentioned I had the same bass as the Reef Bassist Jack, namely a 72 Telecaster and the tech said he remembered buying it from The Bass Gallery as it was a rare maple body. Needless to say I could not continue the bassy conversation as the guitarist was noisly trying all the FX on a board which presumably belonged to Charlie Woods, Ronnie's son? Anyway our guitarist pointed at all the guitar cases on the racks, (there must have been 40 or so) and said there were some rare gems in there. The Reef tech did also say that Jack was using a cheap Squier Mustang at the moment and loving it. Anyway the rest of our band then turned up so off we went. Back to life, back to reality. I've lived in the area 5 years and never knew that Reef had there gear close by although did know they were localish....3 points

It may actually have been what they wanted. I started out in heavy metal bands, writing heavy metal tunes; wouldn’t really want to be playing it now (much as I still love the Sabbaths of this world). At some point, about 6 years in, it became about the tunes for me too. It happens, it’s not always “chasing the money”, although it probably is part of growing older and - hopefully - developing as a musician.3 points

OK, back today with fresh ears. I've been having a lot of fun finding 'my' sounds. There's a lot to learn with this bass, it's not like normally when I get a bass and click with it right away, or realise it's not for me. This one has so much flexibility I feel it'll reveal it's secrets in time. My fave 'go to' sound is like a 'dirty Ken Smith' - I sold my Smith basses as I felt they were a little too 'polite' for my style, and not very flexible. With both pickups selected in parallel, you get that Smith upper midrange, plinky G string and gnarly bottom end, paired with some lovely clank from the now beautifully setup neck (even if I do say so myself!). It has a growl and even output which I think will be fantastic in the mix. The G string popped in particular I spent some time getting right - it seemed too loud and too much Lowe mids - adjusting the pickup poles and heights has finely balanced this now to be a really clear 'plink' with a lot of girth at the same time. I think it sounds best in Active mode in this setting - it seems to shift the treble centre northwards, allowing me to roll off some using the passive control, leaving plenty on tap if required. Next up is a P bass sound. Sometimes when selecting an individual pickup I feel like a bass loses something. Certainly I've never been able to coax a great P sound from any jazz I've had (including my Celinder). This felt like the case when I solo'd the front on the L2000 too, using the same settings as above. However after some playing around I have found the key. Passive mode, series, less treble rolloff, more bass rolloff. It gives some forth, tamed with the rolloff, and the crunchy full range of the pickup comes through with authority. I'd say a 'P on steroids which is what people generally say, however I think it sounds very P like, and in fact going parallel gives a more clanky aggressive steroids vice. In series, it's bang on. Whilst I don't think the back pickup sound is really me, I do love my Stingray. The L2000 does an OK impression when played finger style, active, in series. I back off the tone control and turn up the bass a touch. It doesn't do the Stingray slap sound (at least I haven't worked it out yet) and suspect the pickup is too far back for that (K-mod middle coils is allegedly similar). It's a really punchy sound with plenty of definition - I will have to spend longer with this one. ..So that's how far I've got - I look forward to learning the instrument and allowing the tones to arrive in good time. What a beast! I've backed off the vol about 1/3 on each setting, because I like having some boost on tap - unlike the MFD in my SB1, it doesn't seem to adjust the character of the output when you adjust the first half of the travel. If it did, I think that would throw another spanner in the works and give me a whole other variable to get my head around!3 points

As there isn't much interest in my P Bass I'm going to put this up for sale too. It's a 2014 Fender AV 64 Reissue Jazz in FSR Daphne Blue. It comes complete with the tweed case, pickup covers and all accessories. It also has a set of EMG JX pickups and wiring (cost £180) but the original pickups, wiring loom and copper shielding is included too. The cavity below the control plate has been chiselled out a bit to fit the battery but when the control plate is fitted nothing can be seen. The body does have a few marks in the nitro finish, with the most noticeable being the one between the bridge pickup and the control plate where the pickup covers were fitted. Other than that, it's very clean. It weighs 9lbs 3oz. I'd rather this was picked up from Monmouth but am happy to meet up to an hour away. I will post if necessary but will need to source a box. I'm looking for £1,250. No trades please.3 points

I love a Grabber - my ‘74 has outlived many basses and looks like an Ercol coffee table, but it sounds fantastic. This is a nice bass but very much the wrong side of a grand - the buy it now price is ridiculous! Perhaps I ought to tell the seller I’ve got a genuine spare ‘74 pickup to sell….£400 perhaps?2 points

I’m saying nowt. I listen to everything they’ve done, I’d say I skip 1 or 2 tracks per album. I hate the Zephyr song for example. As an avid fan of many years…I almost died of shock when the first track from BTW they played on UK tv was Cabron on Jonathan Ross. I’ve seen them about 8 times live…inconsistent. I did enjoy lots of I’m with you and The Getaway was ace. stadium arcadium could’ve been a single disc, but I’d rather have it all than nothing. They’ve been at it for 40 years. So that’s beautiful. Californication is an absolute winner - One Hot Minute has a couple of duffers. I enjoy the early albums rawness but I think I’m in the BSSM and beyond camp for listening for pleasure and RHCP Freakey Styley Uplift Mofo Party Plan Mothers Milk are fun to revisit2 points

Plasterboard and power sockets all done. Being plastered tomorrow. Originally I was going to dry line and paint it but I just thought if I got it plastered the finish would look nicer, it'd be less hassle for me as I've never done taping and jointing before and it's pretty time consuming. Managed to get a reasonable price for the plastering too so happy days!2 points
