Hi Folks, 3 weeks post surgery and I'm doing well. This post is primarily for the Senior Folks that have been playing for decades. However, please everyone chime in. What do you want to do and accomplish at 65 plus years as opposed to when you were 21 What is your focus at 65 plus, writing, performance, recording , self study What are your thoughts on gigging at 65 plus as opposed to 21. What type of folks do you want to work with at 65 plus I'll be performing tonight it's my 2nd gig since my surgery. I was in the hospital for 6 days. I've been out for 2 weeks. I'm really pushing it and I think I'm getting ahead of myself.10 points

*NOW SOLD* Warwick Thumb ‘06 Limited Edition Dirty Blonde in near immaculate condition. Traded at the start of October but as beautiful as it is, I just prefer Streamers. Extremely light (sorry will get weight up later) and great player with no structural, electronics or playability issues. Comes with Warwick owners kit and certificate of authenticity. Bass is signed by Hans Peter Wilfer on the back of the headstock and has an inlayed numbered plaque as well. Comes with gig bag. Main features are poplar burl top over swamp ash body, flame maple three piece neck with ebony fretboard with bell brass frets and abalone gull inlays. Matching headstock, black hardware, just-a-nut, MEC twin J and split P pickups with MEC three band EQ and active/passive and coil split for the twin J on push/pulls. trade up the way for a natural or stain finish Streamer Stage 1 or a Stage 2 if I can stretch to that. Would also trade for a Stingray in good condition with a rosewood board and no issues. other partial trades considered (cash either way) bass can be auditioned just outside Market Drayton, Shropshire or can possibly meet fairly local. thanks for looking! Glad to hear you're OK. I'm 64 in a couple of weeks and three weeks ago had my second operation on my right eye. Still on a mixture of eye drops every two hours. First gig since beginning of September with the Grateful Dead tribute in Oxford tomorrow. Already had venue changed, time changed, availability of nearby parking unknown - and all for a unpaid gig for a completely useless promotor who has dragged us to play and then kept us waiting before. The rest of band are all part of the 'Oxford scene' which, quite frankly, sucks. I'll show up, but if we haven't started playing within an hour, I'll leave. If I can't park within a distance I can carry my gear in from, I'll simply drive home. Those are my priorities at this age - I'm not prepared to be messed about by a bunch of people who couldn't organise their way out of a paper bag. Revised a couple of days later - I was completely wrong! The drive in was easy, parked on a back street a minutes walk from the venue - which turned out to be a proper music venue with stage, PA, lights & sound man who knew his stuff. Thoroughly enjoyed it.5 points

Heyo! I've decided to let this Status Energy 5 go as my bass gear piggy bank is running low. I picked this bass up in a trade a while back and set it up E to C so I could tinker around with chords and tapping (nice flat fretboard and low action), but I intend on changing it back to B to G before letting it go (unless that's a deal breaker). It's got active EMGs fitted and although I dont know when I last plugged it in, from memory it sounds great so I suggest someone snags it quick before I plug it in and go "Aw man, this sounds great - I'll keep it!" As you can see from the pics it's got some wear and tear, I consider it mojo myself, but I'll call it relic/distressing and charge an extra hundred quid if that helps. Collection from Norwich preferred but I'll ship within the UK at the buyer's expense - having looked at the fine print for insurance I personally think there's too many hoops to jump through to not give them a get out if something goes wrong, so I'll also be willing to jump in the car and deliver it personally for the cost of fuel within a reasonable distance. I work at Snetterton Monday to Friday which I can use as a headstart if you're in that direction. Really I just want a cash sale, but I'll consider trades for compact and/or powerful lightweight cabs, or an EHX Pitchfork (maybe similar polyphonic harmoniser pedals). Any questions please ask! Cheers, Matt4 points

Hi All, Here is my USA 5 string SUB with loads of Mojo, it has certainly been a players bass, bought off this very forum, and upgraded with a genuine USA Stingray EQ. It plays and sounds great and was a backup for my main stingray, which it did brilliantly, but I need an interesting 4 string for a project so am putting it up for trade.4 points

Result! Cancelled the finance ordered bass that was in stock, and they're sending that one as my paid for order. I was worried that it might get assigned to someone else. It'll be here on Tuesday. 🙂4 points

Well love him or hate him sting with his side kick dom Miller discuss there latest venture on YouTube talking to Rick Beato : some people often disregard sting as a pompous git , but he really is a modern day genius , his ability to write a 3 minute pop tune is amazing , but even he has come to the conclusion that music has hit the wall , but with his ever evolving talent and his quest to push himself to the next level and constant changing of the guard he has tried to make himself relevant . So for that alone I wish people would give him a break and stop starting sentences multimillionaire sting with personal fortune £300 million ! Yes he’s rich beyond comprehension and why not he’s works hard , yes that’s right hard. so base his success on his ability to do something not just well but to an amazing standard , check out his dedication to evolve to find the next big thing , Rick and dom have witnessed something quite special and I agree with them , sting is a modern day genius . Looking good Blue. Interesting post and really got me thinking. In late teens I was still playing guitar in an 8 piece Soul Band all over the UK. Only semi-pro, but 3 of us worked in the same building in Manchester and would often get picked up in the van Friday night and dropped off Monday morning and hadn't been home all weekend. Worst weekend was an Allnighter in Newcastle on Friday, followed by a late one in Brighton Saturday and ending up in Carlisle on Sunday. When the band folded, 2 of us joined the House Band at a local nightclub. Had a bit of a sabatical and came back playing bass and put the Soul Band back together with 4 original members. Into my 60's we were regularly doing 60-65 gigs a year and I ended up playing with a typical Pub Rock band and a Jazz Fusion band as well. Now the wrong side of 70 and after the enforced downtime of Covid, I've had time to ponder. We lost 2 band members over that period and I decided not to try and find replacements, I'd look for another band instead. This time I am looking more for quality than quantity. Was asked to join a very busy band but really don't want 65 gigs a year anymore. 20 - 24 will be fine. So with a couple of auditions coming up, here's hoping.3 points

This mornings fun. Some comparison time and a choice to be made. Visually (shallow I know) the 1024's bridge, P pickup, string tree, nut and gloss headstock look nicer, but the 424's fretboard wood is far, far nicer and I prefer the plain black scratchplate. The 1024 has white Dr neons while the 424 has D'addario half rounds ( @Ricky Rioli) so sound comparison will be difficult. I've not weighed them but the 1024 feels heavier, but not substantially. Time to play. 🙂👍3 points

As predicted once we got started it all fell into place. The cold backed of for the duration and my voice was in good form. Most of the problems I had were due to poor eyesight , bringing the wrong glasses and then breaking the ones I did bring. As it was nearly two years since we graced the stage we were just happy to be there. My partner got some pictures and videos which we'll look at later. Today I'm croaking like a frog and I'm the source of 80 percent of the world's mucus.3 points

I'm not battling age as such but illness has robbed me of energy and limited my learning ability. However I intend to stop only when no one will work with me. I've done more and learned more post 55 than I ever did before.3 points

I just set up an extra email address for all the places that insist on an email address. It's not linked to anything so I get no notifications on any devices. One address for the stuff I want, one for the ones I don't want to hear from. I did have a quick check of the spammers one as I was waiting for a delivery from someone on here, and ended up making use of PMT 10% off Black Friday deal so clearly I'm just a sucker that can't follow my own rules. 😁3 points

Dingwall D-Roc Standard Vintage Burst £999 shipped Mainland UK - No Trades. Very Good Overall Condition, barley a mark on it. Note the natural marking in the wood of a black spot on the body, under the G String area on the body between the pickups and the neck. Note another hole has been drilled to give an alternative position to hand the bass from – done by a previous owner and a very useful addition! The Blurb from Dingwall: The D-ROC Standard is an affordable, but brilliant bass guitar. It features a classic design and a high-quality mahogany body, partnered with smoked nickel Hipshot/Dingwall hardware. It’s a match made in bass heaven. This 4-string model comes in a classy, Matte Vintageburst finish. Hand Picked Hardware Dingwall have decided on an open-back tuner for the D-ROC. It helps to provide a smooth feel and is extremely lightweight. They are also known for being very reliable, offering years of high-level performance without any issues. A great tone pairs nicely with this solid performance, in part due to an available bridge/saddle system. This has then been improved upon through the implementation of a custom riser system – which grants increased range of action adjustability. Excellent Electronics The FD-3N pickups in the D-ROC (made to meet Dingwall expectations) ensure an aggressive, but buttery smooth tone. This is because of the decision to use quality Neodymium magnets. New Smoked Nickel knurled dome style knobs with a set-screw further adds to the excellent electronics found on this bass. Body and Neck A well-crafted mahogany body has been used, which helps to reduce the weight of the bass and provides a comfortable playing experience. The average weight of a D-ROC Standard is between 8.5lbs and 9.5lbs – making it a great choice for long playing sessions. The matte finish is durable, and will remain looking amazing for a long period of time. The bass sounds just as good as It looks! Stability and reliability are guaranteed due to a 5-piece maple neck construction. Many Dingwall players even say that this results in a neck that is as stable as many graphite necked instruments they’ve played previously. The choice of a flat headstock – with Hipshot licensed Ultralite tuners – achieves a truly excellent balance. Playability has also been enhanced thanks to the addition of smaller, 18% hard nickel silver fretwire. It offers you a much faster feel, as well as a woodier, less metallic tone. Specifications Finish: Matte Vintageburst (Matching Headstock Edge) Hardware Colour: Smoked Nickel Hardware: Hipshot/Dingwall Strap Pins: Standard Bridge: Improved Bridge/Saddle System with Custom Riser Tuners: Open Back Tuner Jack: Traditional Style Jack Plate with a Switchcraft Brand Jack Knobs: Smoked Nickel Knurled Dome Style Knobs with Set-Screw Pickup Switching: Position 1 – Bridge (CCW), Position 2 – Bridge/Middle (Parallel), Position 3 – Middle, Position 4 – Bridge/Middle/Neck (CW) Standard Electronics: Passive, FD-3n Pickups, Volume, Rotary Pickup Selector, Passive Tone Pickup Options: 3 Pickup Neck/Middle/Bridge Pickups: FD-3N Pickups Made to Dingwall Specifications Postion Markers and Inlays: 3mm Plastic Face Dots, 2mm Plastic Side Dots Fret Options: 18% Hard Nickel Silver Fretwire Standard Fingerboard: Pau Ferro Radius: 240mm (9.45") 4-String Model – E A D G Headstock: Flat Neck Reinforcement: Heavy Duty Truss-Rod Neck Carve: Medium Thin C Shape Neck Construction: 5-Piece Maple Fingerboard Material: Pao Ferro Body: Mahogany2 points

After recently suffering a heart attack, I'm finding myself at home a bit more whilst I recuperate. Mrs B is insisting I don't do too much, and making sure I have plenty of non-work rest time. Well, I thought another parts caster build might be a nice way to relax and spend some time occupying myself. The guy I usually buy necks and bodies from is retiring, so I thought I'd drop him a quick email to see if he had anything "nearly complete" in the workshop. He did have a few gems that could make an interesting project.. one of which is a 32" scale Jazz body and neck. Interesting I thought. It's also rear-routed for controls and it's a maple board too.. even more unusual. Well, I'm going to give it a go. I'm arranging the usual payment etc. and he needs to drill some headstock tuner holes for me, and then it'll be hopefully on it's way. Will be interesting to see what people think might be a good colour/finish choice, and what sort of kit to fit in it. I do have two spare Custom Shop 62 Jazz pickups going spare at the moment...2 points

MTD KZ5 5 String Bass Guitar - Delano Pre-amp Upgrade - Excellent Condition 9/10 These are known for being amongst some of the most underrated basses you will find in this price bracket, if you have played one you know. Lovely design and finish, the build quality is excellent too. tight low B string. Mahogany body gives great resonance and sustain. The pre-amp has been upgraded to a Delano Sonar 3 MS-E purchased at Bass Direct and installed by their recommended tech/luthier. From memory I think this cost around £250, giving enhanced versatility with 3 way selectable mid-frequency adjustment. Push/pull passive/active volume knob. This is really useful in a live scenario with no cut in volume. Original preamp will also be supplied. The bass was purchased by me from new at Bass Direct, and has been well looked after and cared for, mainly been used for light gigging. It does have some minor scuffs and a couple of tiny dings (see photos) but overall in excellent condition. Only selling as I feel more at home with 4 strings. Full spec can be found here: https://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/MTD_KZ5_NATMP.html Ideally I would prefer collection, but if you contact me directly with your details and I may be able to organise delivery. I’m currently based Edinburgh but will be visiting the Midlands every now and then. Open to sensible offers or potentially trades (+or-money from me) for MIJ or AVRI fenders. Feel free to get in touch with any questions. cheers for looking Russ2 points

Last nights gig was at a bar in the Essex Riviera's equivalent of St Tropez (or Sarfend as it is known locally). Freezing cold, wet and windy outside and the place had been really quiet all week - the landlord admitted he was a bit glum about the prospects of making any money on the night. We had a few gremlins during set up - singist getting a zap through the mic so we had to switch a load of mains cables around and then the geetard forgot to switch the sub back on. Consequently it all sounded weird and gutless when we soundchecked. I always stand out front whilst the geetard does the desk and it just sounded odd to me whatever we did but i was assuming it was an unfamiliar room. It was a big raised stage and you frequently find all the bass going into the floor into those sort of rooms. Eventually I figured out that he hadn't switched the sub back on!!! Fortunately we got about 60 people in so the evening ended up being a good one. Great lively crowd and we played pretty well and enjoyed ourselves playing some stuff that we can't normally do in a non rocky pub (Bark at the Moon and Get the Funk Out are always fun to play). Lots of nice comments at half time and afterwards and we came away with a glow on. Here's a pic from the crowd....2 points

I reversed my usual P, so the d&g pickup were on the opposite side of the e&a one, closer to the neck and routed for a mm in the classic sweet spot. I also put a coil tap switch on one of the mm coils so I could do the pj thing.2 points

Copper is an element and in its solid metallic state it doesn’t form molecules. Reading that website it sounds like they think it does something to the grain boundaries, which solid metallic copper at least does have. On whether it does something that’ll improve the sound of a cable… let’s say you can find me in the sceptic camp.2 points

Hi Blue, glad to hear you are well and easing your way back into the madness, Like most of you guys Bass is what makes life fun. I took early retirement 5 years ago, don't know where that time went 65 now. I'm with Mr Finn my attitude has changed and now more selective. Think my first paid function gig was 1974. Everything has changed now, back then you could drive over and put a card in someones hand the phone would always ring. and you just needed a couple of good agents who knew the business to get you into places you didn't know. Now the customer doesn't know from a website if your are genuinly a local band or a bunch of deps based 200 miles away. i don't want to spend hours managing a band persona on line (facebook twitter etc) when the best website gets the gig and maybe not the best band. So Big band jazz is my main outlet now and enjoying it. No bad back, no Van on the drive, No web site to maintain with all that entails, (pictures, video, recordings), and No tax man to worry about Take it east out there guys2 points

Hi Blue, great to have you back and glad you’re doing well. I’ve missed reading your posts. I'm 63 and playing more than I have done for a long time. This is because I’ve been able to cut back significantly on other jobs. Semi-retirement, it’s great. I plan to carry as long as I’m physically able to. I’m playing in a busy covers band (done 6 out of the last 7 Saturdays), a originals indie rock band and an acoustic blues trio. The latter two being less active recently mainly due to COVID. What I enjoy a lot these days is working with younger musicians. In the covers band we have a lead guitarist of 21 and a drummer of 19. It’s great to see them get excited and enthusiastic about music and playing live. It rubs off on me. Welcome back Blue, I’m looking forward to your posts about the USA scene.2 points

I'm not being sarcastic but 'unsubscribe' does seem to work well with proper companies nowadays. I think there are fairly tough rules for companies that don't adher to that and data protection. ....obviously the real spammy 'I'm a Prince who needs to deposit money in your account' types don't care about that - but Outlook seems to be good at putting all them into junk mail. Some companies shoot themselves in the foot, I wouldn't mind a useful SBL update on new courses every couple of weeks but almost daily spammyness has me clicking 'unsubscribe'.2 points

Hello, I'm new to this site, someone recommended that I use it to try and identify the makers of this old double bass. It was used by a friend's father up until about 1975 when he switched to a Fender Jazz Master. He played in lots of Jazz bands in the UK and won awards in the NME Polls etc. No makers mark of any sort on the bas, no numbers, nothing that gives any clue. Any ideas appreciated Chris. Your idea of going to some open mic nights and singing with a guitar or mandolin is sound, as this will build up your confidence. However, as @ubit mentions above, singing and playing bass at the same time is often a very different ball game, due to syncopation. I used to sing lead vocals on China Girl and the second half of that was a nightmare, but repeated practising at home finally nailed it (sorry, it’s the same old ‘keep doing it’ advice, but it’s true). Another potential pitfall is not committing to the performance. I found that if I was tentative at all with my vocal delivery, my pitch would suffer, but this is just a confidence thing that improves with more and more performances, both at home and live.2 points

I remember many years ago when I was first forced into singing (our very average singer had left) and I first heard my voice coming from speakers it was weird. It takes a bit of getting used to at first. I think you just have to say f*** it! And just belt it out. You will soon learn how to regulate your voice2 points

I collected some info on eq freq centres a few years ago for the same reason as you mention. I don't have freqs for the Schecter but here's a spreadsheet with what I collected for info. I put the fundamental freqs of standard bass tuning and the first harmonic (which is usually dominant) in rows 3-4 for ref. Below this are the ISO standard freqs for a 31-band graphic eq. The centre freqs for various devices are shown below this, mapped out against the 31-band freqs. Bass EQ Freqs.xlsx2 points

And just for those who are interested I was getting a big, produced Max Martin style clean bass sound happening last night. Think that big bass forward tone which stands up with a synth like you’d hear on any modern pop so anything from The Weekend to Dua Lipa. I’d say that the ADAM would be a modern pop players one stop box! I think its that big multi band clean side. Very foundational tone for that eq to build upon.2 points

I was the bass player and singer for our band for many years. I always hated the sound of my own voice but people kept saying I was decent. I tried getting someone else in to sing but everyone said it won't be the same band so I was stuck with it. As for singing and playing, you just have to get the bass part learned until it's pure muscle memory so that you can concentrate on the vocal. If it's a particularly hard part break it down and think which notes land on which lyric and try and play it simplified. Once you get that then you can try to add the rest of the fills or whatever. It worked for me.2 points

Without a maker’s mark you’ll need to take it to a professional and get them to check it out. If you can let us know where you’re based perhaps one of us can recommend someone to take it to or call. It’ll need a full condition assessment in any case to assess value. What wonderful memories from your dad and a lovely item to have in the family. My grandad left me a silver cigarette case which is certainly easier to carry!2 points
