As a woman who plays bass I'm not so much offended as bored sh!tless by Clayton, his playing and the cr@p he's talking about in the bit quoted in the OP. I did not click on any links. However, the usual way to check if something is offensive or simply irritatingly idiotic, is to replace certain key words.17 points

Due to the Covid-19 situation and severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus right shoulder injury (non-operable capsulitis from which, after more than 3 years, I will never fully recover), I'm selling all my basses over 4 kilos and also the ones I'm not really using as well as some stuff I don't use. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. 1991 Ibanez AFR A304 #0123 with original form fitted hard case, all the goodies and papers. Get yourself a rare piece of history ! ABSOLUTELY NO TRADES, EXCEPT LEDUC BASSES ! NON NEGOTIABLE PRICE ! Asking price including shipping fully insured with tracking number to your place in these European countries (ask for other countries) : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (excluding French overseas departments and territories), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom : €1550 Euros or £1325 GBP !!! New price with optional hard case was 2350 Euros in 1991 !!! Shipping to United Kingdom is, of course, possible, but with an extra customs fee (VAT + other taxes + courier fee), because U.K. is now outside EEC. In fully working condition and in very good overall condition for its age. Here are the specifications : Body : two pieces flamed maple (shape patented by Rolf Spuler) Neck : one piece maple half-trough neck with 2 graphite bars (an innovation in 1991) Fingerboard : ebony Frets (slightly marked) : 22 (E and A), 23 (D) and 24 (G) with white side dots and double abalone dots at the 12th position on the fingerboard Headstock : 2 + 2 (shape patented by Rolf Spuler) with matching flamed maple top Pickups : 4 polyphonic piezo pickups in each saddle called PPP (patented by Rolf Spuler) + AFR 4 Special magnetic pickup Controls : volume, blend, stacked bass and treble Preamp (18 Volts) : Matthias Grob designed especially for the AFR basses with gain for each piezo and 2 bands EQ (cut/boost) Tuners : Gotoh/Ibanez GB-7 Bridges : 4 Mono Rail's (patented by Rolf Spuler) including a Stay-D-Tune (patented by Rolf Spuler) detuner on the E Mono Rail Strings spacing at bridge : 19 mm Nut : graphite Strings spacing at nut : 11 mm Knobs : original Ibanez Scale : 34 inches Hardware colour : Cosmo black Truss rod : one single action Finish : satin Land of craftsmanship : Japan/Switzerland Serial number : 0123 Year : 1991 Weight : 3.215 kilos Action : from 1.5 mm under the G string to 2 mm under the E string at 12th position (can even go lower, but was perfect for me) Will come with the optional original Ibanez AFR form fitted hard case, all the goodies and papers. Non-smoking environment as usual. I'm only selling this bass because I'm thinning down the herd for the reasons mentioned above and that I also bought a new digital hybrid piano... 🤦♂️ The bass has been fully set up professionally. It has received 2 new batteries and is fitted with a brand new set of D'Addario Flex Steels stainless steel strings (40 - 60 - 75 - 95) that really serve the bass. Check the Ibanez AFR catalogue in the link below to understand that this bass is totally unique in its design, craftsmanship and innovations as it has so much patents by the late Rolf Spuler and that there were only next to 900 AFR basses built between 1991 and 1993. What you see is what you get ! Look at the photos taken under different angles to see the real condition, which is used with some minor dings and dongs that I tried to photographed. Link to the Paradis Guitars website page of the AFR : https://www.paradis-guitars.com/products.htm Here is the link to the 45 photos in high resolution, the 1991 Ibanez AFR catalogue, the German test in Gitarre & Bass from 1992, the service manual and the Stay-D-tune plus Mono Rail manual : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1P_Lm6dLQtE8hTglILyikLmPx-kvrufy1?usp=sharing Don't hesitate to ask for more.12 points

http://www.mxdwn.co.uk/news/nadine-shah-takes-exception-with-adam-clayton-comment-on-bass-players-being-the-men-of-the-band/ I just watched the clip found via the link above. Typical male bravado stinky poo-talk that really should have died out by now. I don't know her music. Dont care for his. But I imagine that if I was female, I'd be pretty tired of still hearing this rhetoric. Bringing gender into music. For crying out loud. He should go back to playing his jazz. In reality, I guess, unless you are female, you can't really say how this would impact you - and if you are a bloke on a bass forum, then your opinions probably shouldn't count for anything anyway. The sooner that men stop telling women what their role should be, how they should feel etc... the better the world will be.12 points

Couple of weeks ago now (19th November), first gig for the new band, and actually my first ever gig other than a few open mics. Nothing major, just a fund-raising evening at a local village hall which we did for free, but guess we've all got to start somewhere! Got through the evening with no major foul-ups, the audience enjoyed it, and we got lots of compliments afterwards, which was nice. Next gig on the 2021 Village Hall Tour is the weekend before Christmas, then we're booked for a private event in March 2022, but hopefully we'll get more gigs as word gets around. Onwards and upwards! 😎 https://fb.watch/9JPwI3N4wk/9 points

It's a couple of lines in a documentary on Phil Lynott - "A Song For While I'm Away" - he's talking about Phil and how Phil added a sexual context to his performance with a bass. There were so very obvioulsy phallic insinuations with Phil, a man from a very different era. Let's be honest, if you watch a documentary on Lynott and think Clayton is the notable mysoginist, well... you've only seen what you wanted to see. Context, as ever, is everything and, as ever, is easily overlooked when there is attention to be grabbed.8 points

It's old fashioned to describe some traits as manly, and others as girly. It used to be normal, but now it's frowned upon for perpetuating gender stereotypes. It seems fair enough to challenge that?7 points

Picked this up just before the weekend - all credit however has to go to the legend that is @Jonesy for pointing me in its direction! I recently acquired a Road Worn P in a trade and having been very impressed by it was on the hunt for a Road Worn Jazz to match. I'd been keeping an eye out for a number of months but had never managed to find one in sunburst...until now! Anyone familiar with these basses will know what they're all about - arguably some of the best models to ever come out of the Mexican factory. The neck on this is excellent, super smooth and quick. The single coil pickups provide a lot of grunt, but backing off the front pup gets it close to that Jaco-esque tone. I still want to spend a bit more time with it before waxing too lyrical, but suffice to say first impressions are very good indeed. A few pics below, including next to her new sister Also tagging @la bam who I believe likes a good Road Worn.6 points

First thing I did when joining a new pub band was persuade them to go ampless and in ears. It's the classic problem with a lot of bands - someone (usually a guitarist...) decides he can't hear himself well enough so turns his amp up - then someone else can't hear themselves over the new volume and turns themselves up, and on and on until it's deafening. Bottom line is you are doing yourself physical harm every time you play at that volume. There will be inevitable pushback and reluctance and the only way might be to do what I did which was shell out for the mixer and monitor amps, and tell them to just buy/bring some headphones. Took a lot of arguing and several rehearsals of persevering with it, but they're all very happy with the setup now - can all mix their individual mixes on the fly, and the pubs and punters are happy because you provide a consistently good sound at reasonable volumes. There's lots of ways to do it but I went with the Behringer xr18 and Behringer P2 monitor amps - the singer and both guitarists have now bought themselves wireless monitor packs and would never go back to loud stages now. No screaming feedback from the vocal monitor and no screaming ears for 48 hours after a gig (or forever which is what the inevitable outcome will be if you continue like this!) It's far easier to say than to do, but if they refuse I'd walk away - it's not worth risking your hearing for the rest of your life!6 points

I’ve read comments from Adam Clayton before… my first thoughts were always that he had a rather pathetic sense of humour. Whether that is fed by sexism… or any other “ism”… I don’t know. If I met him at a party I’d quickly distance myself from him.6 points

Maybe her language leaves something to be desired, but it's still fair enough to challenge the sexism. The click-bait BS journalism is annoying, but in this instance it's got a bunch of bass players talking about whether or not it's OK to talk about "manly bass" and "girly guitar", which can only be a good thing5 points

Best purchase … after 12+ months and all sorts of parts related delays I got a P bass… (Bravewood) worst: nothing really, I picked up some secondhand strings off here to try which I hated… but that was more my taste than anything else!!4 points

I do think it's sad when builders make no effort to squeeze the control knobs really, really tightly together. This guy clearly 'gets it', and has successfully rendered the controls utterly useless. Bravo!4 points

I do find these conversations interesting. Twitter is full of it - I tend to keep off there nowadays. All these people that say that they haven't got a problem with women, there's no misogyny - go appoint a woman as England mens football manager and just watch the fireworks. Adam Clayton probably hasn't got a problem with women - but his conversation - and the normalisation of it, is fuelling the thoughts and influencing the next generation to think that this is OK.4 points

Adam Clayton possibly somewhere last week demonstrating his position of being "the man" in the band, wearing his best sparkly top and trousers playing his signature bass finished in an eye catching lilac glitter effect. His matching handbag is behind his back just out of shot.4 points

Maybe it was a thoughtless comment that, when challenged, he acknowledges makes him sound like an idiot and doesn't represent his views. Or maybe he's a raging misogynist and says stuff like this all the time. We don't know, because the NME failed to do any actual journalism.4 points

Come on, lets get this to 12 pages. The lead guitarist is coming out of his solo now and it looks like it could end quickly at 11 with no warning and that unevenness in structure will sound rubbish.....! In all seriousness. You're well rid. Onwards and upwards chap!4 points

Well, Been a month (just over) now since discharge from hospital. Have picked up a nice CS fretted Jazz to fill the fretted hole, but the Uberhorn is still the Bass that I come back to time after time. It gets at least some play time every day - even if it's just 10 or 15 mins. I still feel like I'm getting to know it each time I play it, and it feels like more and more of a friend every time as well. I think it's rare to find any instrument that you really connect with.4 points

Final 4 string left of the ongoing cull. I’ve had this for 20 years, and was bought as a graphite necked banger bass- that I’ve used for maybe two gigs that were a possibility of being dodgy ones. Guy I bought it off, said it was a 70’s jazz body, that he got a Vongunton neck out on, when he was in Germany in the RAF. Tuners are big ol reverse tune jobbies. Got Rob Green at Status to take out the knackered electrics out, and replace with one of his 2 band circuits. He also put on one of his bridges. The humbuckers were, to quote him, ‘super output humbuckers, as the output of them was huge. There’s a buzz on the E string from around frets 12 to 15. So the neck isn’t super straight. This, I knew when I got it, but it was super functional for what I needed it for- banger or emergency back up. The batteries had corroded, when I checked last week, so it will require a new wire threading through to the battery compartment- 18 volt system. It’s quite neck heavy- may be the tuners, neck, or a combination of both. Served me well, for what it was needed for, but will no longer be needed by me. Scales are showing 3.5 kgs, then 8lbs- with me on and off with and without bass. But I think they must be wrong, as it feels a lot heavier than that- just trying to be honest here. It’s got a wooden FB on it, so someone could get that replaced which may sort out the slight anomaly with the neck. Or you could break it for the parts. I have absolutely nothing to pack this up with, so please don’t ask- as I’m already waiting in for someone’s courier as I write this. So cash on pick up please. It’ll come in an old Peavey double gig bag, that I rolled with for years- not the best, but perfectly functional. Any questions, just ask away. Thanks3 points

Well. My missus has given me heads up to commission a new bass. I have 3 basses for 2 bands, so a very conservative 1.5 per band.... I will see that becoming 2 per band as I advised in my post (main and backup). It definitely feels like gluttony, but f*ck it, it'll be ready by my 35th birthday. I deserve this on all the miles I do on the car alone lol! Best, Ander. PS: easy question, want to guess what I'm plotting?3 points

Mmm, does it? Just listening to your latest effort (Kitchen Sink - released 2020) and I haven’t found any clear indication of that at all. How about you start selling out stadiums globally and grossing 100’s of million per tour and we’ll start talking. Until then, let’s stop the personal insults Nadine.3 points

Look at the positive: I've now heard of Nadine, and I respect her view, her musicianship may well 5hit all over anything Mr Clayton does. But really, he didn't say "women shouldn't play bass" or "women can't play bass" did he? He linked bass playing with old masculine traits of strength etc which is a bit old fashioned but he didn't punch Tina Weymouth or Suzi Q or say any woman was a bad bassist. Storm in a tea cup and Nadine has capitalised on it.3 points

As Adam was speaking of bass playing as a whole, including female bass players, has Nadine just said she stinky poos on all of us? That's both rude and messy. Seriously, though, future interviews will soon be monosyllabic grunts for fear of someone taking offence at using an old saying which can be misconstrued and used as a weapon. That's great when it comes to the likes of Liam Gallagher, but some artists can be genuinely interesting when giving their slant on the world.3 points

Easily the best purchase has been this Hohner B Bass..... Tbh, I wasn't expecting a lot.... I fully expected to be upgrading the electrics with fingers crossed that the bass itself would be worth the effort. With a setup, new strings etc.... it's blown me away. Lovely clear tones, plenty of lows and highs when active, and even better, a nice clear honky punch when passive. Absolutely no need at all for ANY upgrades. The action is nice and low with no drastic dead spots, even up the dusty end. Superb thing.3 points

I was enthralled by the interpersonal dynamics. Paul was definitely the leader and the most professional of the group. I thought John indulged Yoko way too much and clearly it got to Paul eventually if his reaction in PtIII to her going home was any indication. This was despite him being incredibly diplomatic in the band meetings when John wasn't there. That conversation over lunch about was remarkable and really highlighted the strength of their relationships within the band. I was also deeply impressed by Paul's musicality, he could pretty much play everything the others could...but still played bass. Unlike John, who couldn't play bass at all.3 points

That may be the outcome. The Rhythm guitarist has no desire to gig at all and no lead aspirations. I see performing as a natural progression. The drummer is more closely aligned to the lead guitarist I think. Whatever will be. I need to keep myself free from any unpleasant stuff and stay honest in all this.3 points

When asked what he thought about this new Masterbuilt Jazz model, Geddy Lee said: "It's absolutely beautiful. I'm honored that Fender would go to such lengths." When asked if he'd be buying it himself to add to his extensive collection, Mr. Lee hurriedly looked at his wrist and said "Sorry, running a bit late. Have to catch a plane!" It was noted by this reporter that he wasn't wearing a watch.3 points
