Always looked at these and thought “want”. But never been the time. Recently sold a Spector so missing that neck through, active, fancy wood bit… Haven’t plugged it in as I was involved in a ridiculous situation at work today involving mud and being punched and kicked… Anyhow. It needs a tweak - but acoustically is very much like an old Warwick I had, but feels lovely. I haven’t plugged it in - because, frankly…wine has been opened and I’m really bloody sore. Will report back.12 points

Here's my 1991 Stingray 5 in natural finish, rosewood fingerboard and birdseye maple neck. All original, with alnico pickup. This bass is incredible. Killer B string. It's a lightweight as far as Stingray 5s go, weighing in at 9.3lbs (me doing the with/without thing on the digi bathroom scales) and balances perfectly on the strap. It is genuinely 'road worn' as you will see from the photos. I took this as a good omen because to me this shows that it's been played a lot due to it being a bloody good one. It is. An excellent (and early) example. It has those friendly feels of an old seasoned bass. Really easy to play. Everything works as it should, the neck is rock solid, feels amazing and is unblemished. Set up is perfect, no fret buzz. I've owned it for about a year and a half now, aiming to use it as it was intended when things begin to pick up again. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to play in bands or even jams for the foreseeable due to family commitments and I'm not rich enough to justify seeing a grand just hanging on the wall. Hopefully it will find a good home here with someone. I'm asking for £1050 which is what I paid for it. Local pickup (Cardiff) preferred although I am prepared to ship it at the buyer's expense. Feel free to come over and try it out if you're near me, biccys and brew provided! I think I've covered everything but if you have any questions, fire away! *I think the hardcase is original but not entirely sure. It's a perfect fit anyway, though I don't have keys for it. Thanks for looking.7 points

Now £675 Lovely Markbass JP4 up for grabs. This is essentially an active 70's Jazz with a Precision body, hand made to a very high standard in Italy. The finish is exceptionally nice (the photos don't really do it justice) and the blocks and binding are done perfectly. The Markbass preamp is a great addition, as it allows for standard Volume, Volume, Tone control in passive or active modes, as well as a 3 band EQ when in active mode. It sounds great and the slap tone is unreal! It's in fantastic condition and comes with the mint Markbass gigbag and case candy.6 points

He's right that no-one has the right to not be offended. I don't understand why he has to be such a smug hateful c*&% about it though No-one in this thread, nor the bassist quoted in the OP have suggested that Adam Clayton shouldn't have the right to say what he did. In fact, other than the bassist quoted (for obvious clickbait) no-one seems to be actually offended by what he said. There are some (including me) who think times have changed, and the language he used is now outdated. That doesn't mean we're up in arms outraged, or that we think you should have your freedom of speech curtailed. The only outraged people I see in this thread have imagined an attack on their freedom of speech There are quite a few reasons why we're progressing away from describing small/lightweight/delicate things as "girly" and the opposite "manly". If you don't know the reasons you could take the time to read up. If you've read up and think it's ridiculous, that's fine, keep on the way you were. You have the freedom to do that, and others have the freedom to be offended.6 points

Except lots of species show sexual dimorphism in the opposite way where females are far bigger, stronger and more aggressive, off the top of my head birds of prey, hyenas and a lot of amphibians. Please don't listen to Peterson when he talks about biological science, he knows even less about that than he knows about women and uses it entirely to prop up his religious beliefs around specific roles of men, nothing more. It isn't the insightful observation you seem to think it is. Quite what this has to do with the trait of persistently using terms associated with weakness to describe women when we as conscious beings are perfectly capable of not doing that is beyond me, to say we are hardwired and incapable of change is to ignore the last century of history.5 points

So, from one short clip / article ..... heres who I can see who has already benefitted (financially or otherwise), just from this thread (never mind the rest of the world).... The article writer The article website The advertisers on those sites The people who own the website The people who share that link on their website The advertisers on those websites Adam clayton U2 The offended person in the band The offended persons band The offended persons social media The offended persons website The offended persons youtube channel Jordan Peterson Channel 4 news YouTube ..... and it's all manufactured to do that. It isnt a real article. The social media team has got together to put an inflammatory story out there. And it's worked. People click. People then follow up by checking out social media and websites related to the article. The team collect their fee, the people in the article benefit and everyone else is left arguing or annoyed.....5 points

Now the proud owner of this beauty. It sounds terrific even though it only has one pick up. Not for the faint hearted gigging wise.5 points

Should you be looking for a cheap jazz bass but are worried about quality, let me share my recent purchase with you. I was looking for a lined fretless to improve my high end playing, something that's very hard on the unlined fretless I usually play. So I bought the Harley Benton JB40 FL from Thomanns. I was a little nervous because of the price - £138 new inc VAT. But while I am sure there are cheapnesses somewhere - electrics, maybe? the fit, finish and performance are IMHO equal to Sire or Squier at a third or half the price (and finish actually better than two Ibanez I've had at x5 the price!) I haven't found a single feature yet where I've castigated myself for buying cheap. The fingerboard hasn't any dead spots and the markers are clean. The machine heads are tight and smooth. Trussrod was stiff to turn but did - turn that is. The bridge is thicker than the usual bent tin and the screws work smoothly enough. Amazingly relief, string height and intonation were spot on straight out of the box. It's a bit heavy by modern standards and you'll neeed a wide strap to play a three hour gig with it. If you want clever active electrics buy Sire. Otherwise get this and if you must at some point perhaps throw a ton at upgrade Tonerider pups and KiOgon loom. You'll still have a cheap bass. But for most jobs you do don't even need to do that.4 points

You can try and change words but you'll never change innately programmed behaviours. Which is what JP keeps pointing out, but no one wants to hear. All you're doing is slapping a coat of paint on what has structurally been built over millions of years.4 points

Interesting that his name crops up in threads like this though as the base of a lot of his pseudo philosophies is rooted in his pre-existing religious misogyny. A lot of the time he dresses them up by shoehorning actual genuine philosophical works in there and tries to align them with his own babbling. I saw one debate where he tried to dress up his masculine=order=good / feminine=chaos=evil nonsense with an elongated ramble about quantum physics (which he clearly doesn't understand), people were buying it too. I guess as long as there are thickos there will be grifters there to take advantage of them.4 points

A huge influence on me from the very beginning; riddims I still find jaw-dropping to this day. He was a giant of a bass player, they were a breathtaking rhythm section and the world seems a bleaker place today. Rest easy, Robbie.4 points

Nothing to do with your musical adeptness (or incorrect perceived lack thereof) and everything to do with his musical failings. He’s basically musically gaslighting you here and you need to be shot of him entirely. Learning arrangements, spending time working on parts to get them right (or adjusting slightly to ensure you can deliver them accurately) and wanting structures and arrangements to be fixed on and agreed are all the hallmarks of a pro player. I can vouch for this because I’ve been a pro player for nearly 20years and all of his behaviours are the opposite of what you need to be a pro player. So don’t be thinking you’re at fault here because you’re not. Even top flight players need fixed arrangements and agreements on structure unless they’re at a jam where it doesn’t matter! You can be the best bass player in the world but if you’re playing and suddenly there’s an extra few bars added / removed you’re gonna play a clanger. Working in an ensemble is a group endeavour and one of the agreements is on structure and arrangement….unless the agreement is very specifically the opposite - I.e changes will be clearly cued. So take heart, continue working hard as you do and find yourself another outfit who are able to function properly as an ensemble. You’ll be an absolute asset to them.3 points

I don`t want to go into too much detail here but there is something to be aware of when buying amps, cabs etc from a European music store. If anything goes wrong with the gear even though you may have registered the product with the manufacturer, as it was bought in Europe and not the UK, they might not look at it for you and tell you to send it back to said shop. We all know that sending stuff back to EU shop can be a bit of a nightmare at the moment so I would suggest that if you were buying a combo for example, I would check what happens if something goes wrong with it. Just a cautionary tale.3 points

The ones where men are on a normal distribution bigger, stronger and more prone to violence than women normally are. Look in the animal world and you'll see the same behaviours. You can pretend we are not animals. But all you're doing is pretending.3 points

Peterson is absolutely on topic given the thread is about misogyny, fake outrage tactics and the ensuing "hurr durr why is everybody a snowflake except me" attitudes that stem from that. In fact in recent years he's probably done more to stoke the flames than anybody.3 points

AC is right though - we are the men of the band, especially if your band is full of men. I'm in three men bands, but we're all as menly as each other. We strike our strings and hit our skins with such menly force, sometimes other men are scared of our power. And occasionally the non-men who see us wield our menly instruments pass comments such as "why has your guitar only got 4 strings?", or "my other half plays guitar, his is blue". Grrrrrr......3 points

Watts clearly do matter or a 1W amp would be as loud as a 1000W amp. It defines the rate of energy transfer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watt You don't need to get into a technical feeding frenzy however, watts depend upon both volts and current and in a practical amplifier they aren't independent. You don't need to understand that though just read your manual You get 800w at 4ohms and 480 per channel at 8 ohms or 960W in total at whatever distortion level your manufacturer chose to measure this at. Marginally more power using both amps. Not enough to be noticeable soundwise but more. More importantly the current flowing in each amp will be lower and high currents will create heating and other effects within each amp which might mean losing some power over long term high level use. I think your answer is in this part of what you've said "2 x BBII yes they are loud. But I don’t feel the same heft and pure power like you do when playing in front of an ampeg SVT / 810 rig." There are a whole lot of differences between a monstrous wall of cheap drivers driven by an SVT and a modern FRFR speaker system with it's 'hi fi' sound. The 810 is going to be more efficient and highly coloured with lots of frequency bumps in the response which you are hearing as heft. The poor Barefaced had all of that removed to give you a cleaner sound. Finally I wouldn't pay too much attention to the clipping light. It's only showing that you have signal. Your manual says listen to the speaker output to verfy operation3 points

I think this is the best approach. I’m a pick player so irrespective of how the original line was played I do it with a pick. I can get a good variety of sounds just with technique, though in my bands I’m always “me”.3 points

Well this is shameful for me but when you knows, you knows. I only picked this up last week from Sammybass of this parish but it just confirms to me that I really am much happier with single pup basses in a live environment. This is a near immaculate example of a proper German Sandberg California 2 TT4, the active/passive one with the Delanos. It's a lovely matte finished piece of lightweight swamp ash and is a perfectly balanced 7.5lbs or thereabouts. The swamp ash body is a custom option as is theebony fretboard and it looks to have a quarter sawn neck (?). I'm asking what I paid for it seeing as it's only had about 3 hours of noodling and a rehearsal. I've used SammyBass's images as nothing has changed in it's condition over the last week (hope you're ok with that Sam). As this is gigbag not HSC it'll be a collection or dodgy motorway services pickup only - sorry I don't trust couriers with breakables. Ideally I'd prefer a trade, a MIA P bass in great condition would be sound, otherwise cash will do fine.2 points

Well, I'm glad that all you chaps are giving some thought to this issue.(Seriously, not being facetious). Ironical though that 6 pages of comment include very little input from female bass players. I have to confess to not reading all 6 pages, though I did see Silvia Bluejay's comment. Insightful as usual. Apologies to any other bass sisters I may have missed. FWIW, I wasn't offended by AC's comments. A bit silly and schoolboyish perhaps, but nothing to really make my hackles rise. I prefer Jah Wobble's description of the bass as 'the predator' of the instruments. Sums it up nicely without resorting to sexism.😎2 points

The thread title is innacurate. The man who founded and runs Spotify is investing his own funds into a company that provides, among other things, services to miltary customers. Spotify the company has nothing to do with this. Good luck when their lawyers catch up with you.2 points

Well I say my workshop but I've got to share it with my dad as they've moved to the house behind me but I've got all my machines back: bandsaw, thicknesser, router table and table saw so thats going to make my life a lot easier!! Its 20'x10' so its going to be a bit tight on size but it should be ok....... 👍🏻2 points

In the mid-90s I was in a four-piece where at no point did the members of the band ever manage to be in the same room at the same time. As far as I know we haven't split up yet.2 points

Bill tried to set you straight. In more layman's terms, about the only thing that is linear in the whole operation is the numbers 1 to 10 on the amp dial. SPL is on a log scale to 'match' with voltage and make graphs possible to fit on paper. It also dovetails with how we hear changes in SPL. If you know anything about power, it varies with the square of the voltage. Decidedly non linear! While the heat remains under control you can get 3dB extra volume each time you double the power. A very non linear 1w 2w 4w 8w 16 32 64 128 256..... 512.. silence. Rules of thumb might have changed a little in the modern high power woofer game but it used to be that around half the rated power through put was where they would start to get warm and go 'non linear' not that they were ever linear in the first place. OP's 800w cabs will do very well with 480w each.2 points
