If I'm in a mischievous mood and I'm in no hurry to sell something (and I did this with a classic car I was selling as I was fed up with ludicrous offers).... if I've explicitly stated no offers, the buyer gets one warning after which the price goes up by the amount of the difference in their offer. Huge amounts of fun to be had with indignation from the buyer, especially if they then go up to the original asking price which has now in turn gone up, so I treat it as an offer and price goes up again! They even use swear words!! Brilliant!8 points

I bought a cheapish Pearloid pickguard to give it a go and I'm really pleased with how it's turned out. I'm not sure at this stage whether I'd bother buying a more expensive one as the one on it is actually pretty decent. It's by a company called Musiclily and was bought on Amazon for £13 inc delivery. It came with a set of pickguard screws and some picks which was a nice touch. It's a pretty exact fit for a US Fender as sometimes I've found more expensive pickguards aren't quite right and I was damned if I was going to order a proper Fender one for silly money to find I didn't like it.7 points

There are plenty of timewasters but also ... We were moving house, downsizing, and we had a very nice oak desk that had to be got rid of. We had failed to sell it at a fair price, so it went on Facebook for £25 if 'you take it away before the weekened'. A woman arranged for husband to collect in his van. Guy turns up, in the dark, and gets desk in van. He gives me thirty quid and says 'keep the change, very nice desk'. Half an hour later woman rings up and says, 'that desk is worth way more than £30, I'd like to give you some more money?' After a brief chat Mrs ET and the woman agree a further £75 to a homeless charity. I don'y actually know for sure that the £75 was paid to charity but i'd like to believe it was.7 points

I turned 21 in 2005. I had a mortgage, was living with the mother of my first child… when I turned 21, my mum and dad - who I’ve battled with, but have been incredibly supportive of my musical endeavours asked me what I wanted. ”Musicman Bongo” And they gave me £800. So I put the rest to it and I got one of the early bongos. They didn’t come with a case originally. i took a case…but was later informed it was a £120 optional extra 😕 Returned it. Anyhow, 4 years later - my partner wrote her car off and quit her job on the same day when we had a brand new baby…so a massive bass sale began. @LukeFRCand @Etienne got some basses… the Bongo went, at a huge loss… they weren’t popular at all at the time. now I’m 37, the “brand new baby” is a 13 year old bass playing emo. Its time found the same age, spec, colour… It’s in Northern Ireland. i debate a flight. And then I remember my good mate @briansbrewis in Derry. and here’s where a person shows their worth. A message last night to Bri. “Yeah it’s near me, I know him - let me work on it” and nothing…for a bit. this afternoon “I’ve gone out for a drive…here it is…got £150 knocked off and I’ll get it ready to ship…” it’s in his lounge. He’s bought the bloody bass! What an absolute hero - Bri is no middleman…he is the man. I never in a million years expected him to do this - I thought he was going to talk the guy into shipping the bass (listing was collection only) I cannot express my thanks enough (I’ve paid him back - financially at least.) A depressing thing is that I don’t have any pictures of me with my original bongo. Anyhow - Publicly, thank you Brian.6 points

I thought the reason Fender designed bolt-on necks was so they could put vital construction information in the neck pocket thus ensuring early versions were worth lots of money as the dates and signatures did not fade away or be counterfeited.5 points

Did a wedding at the weekend. Arrived, took a while to find someone who could tell where we were setting up. It was a really tiny stage area, that already had some huge speakers in. Started moving those, then the DJ who owned them turned up.. oops. He was ok though. Managed to cram in there. First half bad choice of songs near the start so the crowd weren't really with us. In the second half we threw out everythign that wasn't ska or party, and it went down a storm. Also started that half with a song we had learned for a first dance, but they had the first dance to the DJ, so by the time of the second first dance, loads of alcohol had gone through and they were more up for it anyway. So all went ok, and they were all happy in the end, so double the money, half the time, what is not to like!5 points

Our first gig as the band "Last Of Our Kind", played at the Horse and Groom in Derby. We've all played in bands before, but never together! Very lucky to get in the pub with no previous gigs under the belt as it is well known for its music, however our drummer's contact managed to get us a slot. Must have done well because the lovely manager has asked us back two more times! Great gig, a couple of hiccups, but nothing we didn't power through. Got some noisy low frequency hum through the subs when we stopped playing though in the second set, which was a pain.5 points

Sterling by Music Man Ray34HH. Pearl white, roasted maple. 10lbs3oz / 4.6kg (on my scales). Excellent condition. Only things to note are some pick marks on scratch guard, paint finish by pickup selector switch isn't great and two very minor and small indentations (can barely be seen or felt) on back of neck behind 4th fret. There's a small "graze" by 7th fret dot marker on the neck (not fingerboard). Bought from this fine parish from @dub_junkie, original advert below. Originally purchased from Bass Direct https://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Ray_34_HH_White.html Can't help buying these. This is my third but have just picked up a Flea active bass, they cover similar territory and I like that more. I've had this setup at Planet Guitar in Orpington with new DR Sunbeams 45-105 including a part fret level and dress on a couple of high frets. Up here for a couple of weeks before its goes off for a commission sale. After £700, which is what I paid for it plus some towards the new strings and setup. Can ship at buyers cost and risk but would much prefer to handover in person and happy to drive up to an hour from Orpington. Can also get it to Hendon NW4 if that's any better. Specs: Body: Mahogany Models: Pearl White (PWH) Bridge: Sterling by Music Man Designed Bridge Pickguard: Black Scale length: 34” (86.4cm) Neck Radius: 9.5” (24cm) Frets: 21 Frets, Medium Nut width: 1.69” (43mm) at nut Neck: Roasted Hard Maple Fingerboard: Roasted Hard Maple (PWH) Face markers: Black/White Dot Markers Tuning Machines: Open Gear Truss Rod: Single Action Neck Attachment: 6 Bolts Controls: 3-band Active Preamp Switching: 5-way Toggle Pickup Selector Pickups: HH - 2 Alnico Humbuckers Strings: Ernie Ball 2834 Super Slinky Gig Bag: Deluxe Sterling by Music Man Bag Weight: 10lb 3oz/4.6kg Includes original gig bag.4 points

Years later I still remember a woman who wanted a tent I listed on Freecycle: 1. Emailed me without asking for a phone call instead. 2. Turned up at the easily-agreed time and took the tent away. 3. Emailed again a few days later to say her son had used it at a rock festival and wished to pass on his thanks for how useful it had been. An unusually pleasant interaction.4 points

I got up yesterday morning as I had to take the day off for a funeral when I noticed a message from Andy via Basschat with the subject HELP ! so I knew this had to be something important As luck had it I had the guys number and he was only contactable with e-mail in the ad, so I called him and he agreed to meet me, was a lovely sunny day so I didn't mind the drive up, we had a good chat about basses and gear, as you do with fellow bassists.. We done the deal there and then, had a wee noodle on it when I got home, cracker basses with plenty of tone. It was only after I got it when Andy explained about selling his and regretting it, so I thought I have a decent box to ship it and arranged for the collection today, which has been picked up by the way Andy, winging its way to you as I write this I was really happy to do my bit and get this sorted for Andy as I know it would have been difficult to arrange otherwise.. Its was a pleasure and was worth it to see a happy camper and thank you for your lovely comments...4 points

Continuing my trend of simple basic instruments I'd been hankering for a Danelectro. Owned then sold a Wild Thing model a few years back . No regrets over that; it was a short scale and I don't enjoy playing those 🙂 Watching Dano prices increase , I decided to build one instead 👍 Parts bought , template made, body blank etc . Had the choice of 2 necks, guitar neck re-purposed for 15 frets or a 32" scale from Retrovibe. Then apathy kicked in hard 😧 Few months ago a lass near the Welsh border listed her Dano on a Facebook page, collection only meant 700 mile round trip 😢😢😢 Re-listed the other week there for the attractive price of £235 , I gave serious thought to the drive 😃 Common sense told me ask for help on Basschat. @alyctes was the first to reply then @Old Horse Murphy a few hours later ; fantastic result. Turned out Nick passes the lass's place on way to rehearsal. He did much more than just pass her place, he handled the entire purchase for me , what a guy 👍 Nick had it packed up and delivered to me by Thursday. Sadly I was up and about at 3am so was deadbeat by the evening , all I had left in the tank was a quick thank you note before bed. Different story by Friday 😃 Spent a good few hours last night playing it and I'm over the moon . Nick had warned me it was strung with Fender flatwound cables and the action was a mile high. Bought a set of Rotosound 30-90 but tuned the flats DGCF and the action dropped to easy playing level 😃 Feast your eyes on this sparkling lovely.3 points

Yeah it’s weird isn’t it. The Peavey site says June but, along with Sweetwater showing stock, there are guys already showing pics of them being used. I asked Andertons but they don’t have any information yet. In my infinite wisdom of no money and even less sense I tried buying from Sweetwater but they don’t ship internationally. Probably quite lucky really, the bank manager would have had some strong words for me 🤦🏼♂️🤣3 points

**SOLD* "Get this thing outta my house" special price reduction: £85 I'm braced for a torrent of abuse, but If you're looking for something a bit different, this might be just the thing... The body is from a left-handed bass, but the instrument has been modified and now it's right handed. The tone and volume knobs have also been removed, so when you plug it in, it's ready to go. The body is a lovely, translucent candy apple red. There are a few very minor marks on the back, and there is a small, filled hole on the rear of the headstock. I've also filled in where the strap button used to be, but other than that, it's in very good shape. The neck is new and has been finished with Tru Oil and has a lovely feel. The pick up is new - it's an Entwistle and sounds great - it's slightly brighter than a regular P bass, but that's due to the fact that there isn't a tone knob in the way anymore. Scratchplate and bridge are new. "Neck dive" you say? It's not too bad at all - certainly better than any Thunderbird-alike I've ever played. I've added a cheeky "Fedner Prescription" decal, which might catch a few people out! If you've ever fancied a Dusty Hill tribute bass, but are nervous about spending huge amounts of cash on a weird, semi upside-down instrument - Ta-dah! I'm in Halesowen if you want to try it out. Or just point and laugh at it. UK postage would be £15.3 points

I just bought a MIJ reissue P-bass from Bassbros. Outstanding and responsive customer service from Will, who answered my questions, provided the extra pictures I asked for and accommodated my shipping request... and when it arrived, nicely set up, the packaging was bombproof (or at least courierproof)! It was all very confidence inspiring and I am one happy bunny.3 points

On one of Twisted Sister's albums, in the blurb where the band list their equipment it said 'Dee Snider uses Vidal Sassoon protein hair remoisturiser, are you listening Vidal?'. On the following album it said 'Dee Snider no longer uses Vidal Sassoon protein hair remoisturiser, looks like you blew it Vidal!'.3 points

@Richard R Glad to hear that your Sunday went well 🙏. Mine went better than I expected it to thankfully and the ill-planned 5 song medley went well, even though it became a 6 song medley and the song order changed on Friday night and then again on Sunday morning 2 hours before the service. As I couldn't make Friday rehearsal, I messaged my mate to see how it went and he told me that this week's bassist (a 16 yr old that is a talented multi-instrumentalist and a great kid) actually turned up without a bass 🙄...wtf did he think he was going to play? I would've given him a mic and told him to sing basslines. Referring back to the issue of over-committing and playing on my Sunday-off, the new Summer rota has just been issued and the most anyone will play in a row now is 2 weeks, after that you are guaranteed a Sunday off. Life is good, God is great!3 points

So in conclusion if you like to spend your time widdling around at the dusty end of the neck avoid the Fender Jazz. If you want to play music people actually want to listen to don’t worry.3 points

I can honestly say in the 34 years I've been playing I've never even thought about the way a bass was constructed - it's either bolt-on, set neck or neck through depending on what I've bought at the time. I tend to buy basses cos they're shiny or just look nice. I think some people are overthinking this - as Maude said above, if it matters to you then buy something else that suits you.3 points

I have a fairly expensive piece of (discontinued) upholstery fabric up on eBay at the moment; it has hundreds of watchers. It's amazing the messages I've been sent about it. Chancers and beggars, yes. Many offers for 30/40% of what it's advertised for. Many requests to sell a metre or two. Many people asking me what I'd take for it (when I reply saying I'll take the buy-it-now price, they get shirty). The best one was a woman begging me to reduce the price because she didn't have much money and she needed the fabric because their daughter's Cockapoo (Trixie) had defecated on their sofa it was somehow my duty to sell it cheap to her so she could get new seat cushions made. It's like a game. For every dumb offer I get, I feel like adding £10 on the BIN price.3 points

Don't get emotional, it's a business transaction. Keep it friendly and answer the questions. Avoid sarcasm or whit as that will go missing in written communication. If the buyer can't string a sentence together then they're hardly likely to have been able to read the original advert. Sometimes English is not their first language, again, a lot of nuance can be missing or missed in written communication. Answer questions politely and don't get drawn into conversation that's not directly related to the object being bought/sold. Don't reply to anything that's not a direct question. It may be frustrating but if you want to sell something that's just what you have to cut through.2 points

Leaning towards option 2 here. Buy a replacement neck - second hand shouldn't be too much outlay. Your time has value - what do you get out of this by trying to do it yourself? Even if you did manage to sort it out, wouldn't the amount of time and effort involved make it a pyrrhic victory at best?2 points

I think pie is a satisfactory answer to most problems. Let's say you have two people kicking lumps out of each other in the street. Are you seriously telling me that if I had two hot pies on me and I said "if you two stop fighting now, you can each have a pie" that they wouldn't at least consider stopping? @jd56hawk - if you stop putting the same effing picture of your basses up in almost every thread you participate in, I'll give you a pie? Worth a shot...2 points

The pie IS the compelling reason to eat it. It is its own self contained reason to be eaten. It's just as well they're easy to make - if they were a creature they'd have gone the way of the dodo long ago! Gratuitous pie porn In Scotland we've got you vegetarians covered. Sometimes I prefer a macaroni pie to a steak pie, they're that good anyway. Finally, have a picture of a good old pork pie. All at least 30 mins before lunch, I am so cruel2 points

I use delay - there is nothing about it that takes the rhythm away from the bass, if anything it enhances it. The delay is fixed, you know when the repeat is coming back so you are doubling your notes. Take this for instance, Pneuma by tool, which if I linked correctly is at 1:12, when the bass comes in with a slapback echo, so it is one single echo at a fixed time, and the band is sync'd to that Or something more old school like Pink Floyd Where the bass is thickened up and runs entirely with a lot of echo. I use it in a couple of songs, whole lotta love in the bit where the guitarist is doing something - me and the drummer do a section on a low e, then low e, higher e before going into the bass solo part (yes, there is a bass solo part in ours), at which point I kill the echo.2 points

I think they must have dropped reading comprehension practice and testing from the education system.2 points

That's the Myth of Underpowering, and it's just that, a myth. If amp clipping, or clipping anywhere in the signal chain, hurt woofers guitar players would be swapping them out at every break. Clipping is only potentially dangerous to tweeters, because the high frequency content is abnormally high. And we don't play sine waves.2 points
