  1. For Sale: Sadowsky MV5 Metro with maple neck and fingerboard, plus hard case. I bought this two months ago on this forum and it is a stunning bass, immaculate condition and sounds superb. I am only selling because I've now bought the NYC version. The bass was bought new in August 2020 so is only 18 months old, there is not a mark on it (some very light swirling on the scratch plate but zero other marks or fret wear). This was made in Japan and is the usual very high Sadowsky quality and finish. It only weighs 8.8lb. It has newly fitted DR Hi-Beams. String spacing looks like 18mm with my ruler. Comes with a generic ABS hard case in good condition. I have the Sadowsky warranty form, allen keys, original receipt and controls guide. It is fitted with Sadowsky Hum-cancelling J pickings, the controls are Volume, Pickup Blend, Treble roll-off (Vintage Tone Control) With Pre-Amp Bypass, Bass Boost, Treble Boost, and also Hipshot tuners. All round, a top quality bass, lovely to play and very wide tonal range. You won't find one in this condition at this price. I have a cardboard box this can be shipped in so happy to post in UK only for £15 uninsured. Can do insurance but would cost a bit more. If you live nearby and want to have a look and a play, you're welcome.

  2. And the last few of the aluminium marks to be glued in place - I started getting into the swing of cutting and fitting them by this point!! It has taken a reasonable time but I'm hoping the effect will be worth it in the end. They do look a little messy at this stage but a bit of sanding and trimming and they'll look fine. A rough sanding of the board prior to final trimming of the neck and it's starting to look quite nice. After a quick bit of tidying of the edges with a router the board is ready for gluing to the neck.

  3. Never really considered one of these in my eight years of playing, though I've owned a number of Epiphone Thunderbirds. Took one for a spin last week and discovered I've been missing something special. (Hipshot Supertone 3-point bridge and Magma black tapewounds.)

  5. Not quite last night 😂 but went on tour with a band I guitar tech for. I’d learned a load of their set before we left because of Covid. I ended up playing the last 4 shows of the tour. Sheffield, Bristol, Bournemouth O2 Academy’s and Shepherds Bush empire. Headlining. I hadn’t played a show for a year 😂. What an experience!

  6. Took a long two and a half years of being in separate countries, COVID, not being able to find a drummer etc, but we finally played a gig on Friday. Lovely local pub, played an hour and a bit of our own stuff to an enthusiastic crowd, free drinks and even got paid. Nothing better.

  7. Love the original post here, but honestly I gotta have fret dots!! To the extent that I've actually put my own extra dot on the 10th fret. 😄 It's just something to help me hit a G on the A string in dim light without my glasses on. I just thought, why struggle? And nobody else ever notice it.

  8. Last night's one was a saga! Our scheduled gig was scratched due to a double booking by the venue. Nice to know you're the ones to get binned isn't it.... So I put a post up on Facebook to see if anyone needed a band that night and we were rebooked in about 5 minutes by a venue that we had played at once before a few months back, went down well but didn't have space to book any more as our diary was full. All good and made even better when the original gig got in touch and said the other band had made a mistake and couldn't do the gig and we were back on. Oh no we're not bucko - we're somewhere else now. Sweet revenge!! So this new one is 20 mins up the road from me, an easy load in, got loads of lights so we don't need to take so much gear and a brilliant crowd usually. And I had my new amp courtesy of @40hz to try out. The scene was set. Gopro clamped to the PA speaker in front of me so the bass is a bit high but here you go

  9. Last night I set my helix up slightly differently... I set up a really middy forward tone and then cut the lows quite a lot. Two patches one spikier using at the SVT4 and one rounder sounding I think with the Acoustic. Unsurprisingly (and in retrospect obviously) this fitted in the mix way better this morning and meant I was actually audible rather than just being a sub bass mush. Lots of fun.

  10. For sale is my trusty MarkBass Ninja 1000W amp head. Firstly this head is absolutely fantastic! It sounds amazing, has a huge tonal range, can power just about anything and if you'd like it fits inside a rucksack! I have owned this for quite a while and although it has been gigged a little bit, it has always remained in a flight case, been powered by a Furman (so there is no power damage) and has never been overdriven or played too loudly as it's always been a monitor with the addition of PA support. I mainly used it with a Bergantino Cab (which is also for sale) and it sounds wonderful. My reason for sale is purely because I recently bought a GR bass cab and Aguilar head. If you have any questions or would like to know anything at all, please don't hesitate to contact me. If you have Fender Bassman cab or head please get in touch.   11. Now £1395 Sadowsky MV4E Metro Express, made in Japan in small numbers before Warwick got hold of Sadowsky. This is not to be confused with the new RSD Metro Express basses which are made in China to a very different price point. This is practically identical to the two Sadowsky Metro MV4 basses I've owned previously. As it's an MV4 it has a lightweight ash body, maple fingerboard and an ultra smooth feeling nitro-finished maple neck. The finish is a lovely metallic Sage Green. The Japanese ME basses seem to be universally lightweight, and this one is no exception at 7lb 13oz or 3.54kg. It's in great condition but does have a very small paint chip on the forearm contour, I'll try to highlight this in the pictures. It comes with the Sadowsky Porta bag, and tools etc.

  14. Having read many very positive reviews of the SRF705, and having heard a Youtube demo or two showing its tonal abilities, I've been keeping a lookout for one. One turned up collection only in That London on FB marketplace, and as it was such a good price, it was worth the petrol and £15 ULEZ charge to go and get it. First impressions were a high action, rather quiet piezo pickup, and duff elderly strings. On getting it home, it got destrung and degunked (it wasn't bad), then the fingerboard got lemon oiled (helps the tonewoods) and a set of Elites fitted. The relief was rather more than I like - I go for a nearly flat fingerboard on a fretless. So off with the truss rod cover, to discover that it's a clever design with a swivelling plate allowing easy access to the truss rod without removing the cover (I suspected there was something of the sort but couldn't work out how to use it). Truss rod adjusted, action lowered too, and then adjusted the trim pots on the piezo bridge to increase the volume to match the magnetic pickups. Still to do - fit Schaller straplocks. Do I use the chrome ones I've got here or get some ruthenium ones? Decisions, decisions. Now it plays very nicely and sounds good. What more could I want?

  16. Dammit, I'm out. I was super confident this year that i would make it to the finish line as well 😡 I sold my Handbox a few weeks ago and there was a little envelope of cash sitting in the toy fund. I put it in the draw to try and forget about it and was doing well until @40hz listed probably the only amp that had a chance of knocking me off the wagon. He's a great guy that I had dealt with before and the amp was at a great price. My resolve failed miserably and within 24 hrs I had grabbed it and gigged it. It's bloody brilliant..... See you all in 2023!

  17. P-Basses. In my younger days, I'd always shunned them totally for being so boring (as I saw it) and common, preferring flashier basses with more bells and whistles. I then bought a Classic Series 50's and realised what all the endless clichés are about, with regards to 'sitting in the mix perfectly' and 'sounding great with no tweaking required'. They're ubiquitous for a reason and it took me near 20 years to show them some respect.

  21. I enjoy being on Bass Chat for a number of reasons but one of my original motivations for joining was the ‘For Sale’ topics. I generally check 2-3 times a week to see what’s been posted but yesterday I didn’t (Mother’s Day, visiting in-laws etc) … today I saw my dream bass in the ads, but already sold within 24hrs!! 😮 listed and sold before I even saw it!! genuinely a bit gutted.. I will now be checking EVERY day!!

  23. I saw The Nova Twins in Bristol live last weekend and was absolutely blown away. I'd been listening to the band for about year and loved the demos but my god, live they bring exactly what you hope them too. Let alone the energy and stage presence they had as band, like watching a combination of Destiny's Child and Rage Against the Machine on stage. But my god the bass sound is incredible. Georgia South is getting some really impressive forward thinking live EDM/dubstep/grime sounds out of her rig live. Huge subs but equally blistering heavy riffs too. I tried to catch a look at her pedal board at the end of the show and it looked huge and unfortunately was covered by a fluffy cow pattern blanket (love the style all the same). I think I spotted a source audio hot hand on her finger. I think they're one of the most exciting heavy rock acts to come out in a long long time so would Defo recommend checking them out. Plus playing and equipment wise a really inspiration.

  26. I owned the MLB1DH I thought it looked gorgeous. It played well and sounded ace, but really needed a preamp. The fretting wasn’t the best quality and even my go to guy couldn’t fix the buzz on one fret. It was lovely, but something about it felt off. Like it was made more cheaply than it appeared. That said, I’d own one again.

  27. I'm all for 'em. Anything that gets my indelicate fingers to the right place on the fretboard without burdening my cloth ears is OK with me. Hell, they could even be numbered . What does get my renal output to the point of rapid vaporisation is instructional Youtube vids where there are no fret dots visible .

  28. Ok not really learning just jammin. Cool the way YTube makes an auto mix as you look thru vids etc. Current one has American Pie, a load of Wings stuff, Drifters, Philly Soul (yes thks) Elton , ABBA and a ton of ye olde pop stuff (Nolans anyone?...haha. Played it all back in the day so I hit the start button and before I know it...a couple of hrs has disappeared. I do find the old stuff bass wise very satisfying to play.

  30. Thanks for all the BC advice 🙏 Ended up to side and behind of cab, no feedback and could hear enough to intonate. Awful boomy rumble from the stage as billed, shoved flight case under cab, will get an isolation pad next.. Strange room acoustics with a steel lined roof but once it filled up was fine. We'd not played there before but gig went well, great crowd and we've been rebooked , couldn't really ask for more. Next up is just stamina. Underestimated how physically tough it would be doing a 90 min set. Even with half the notes I'd play on electric, was just about hanging on by the end 🤪

  32. True, in the course of a recital each piece might only use one or two of the strings. I guess it’s similar to how I might only use the B string on my 5-string basses once in certain songs. This is probably a better example of the sub bass strings being more fully utilised!

  33. First proper gig of the year. Played at the Captain's Day do at a golf club in the depths of the Essex countryside. We're not really a functions band but we spent a bit of time on presentation and thought we looked the part. The guests were a bit older than we expected, so much rearranging of the set list on the fly to focus on 60's and 70's numbers, but we had a good number dancing from the off and some nice comments at the end. So a great start to the gigging year.

Mesa boogie all tube eight 88 goes down to 2ohms and also has a power switch on the front to cut out certain valves so you can drop the power from approx 475w to 250w to 100w when you drop the power to half to keep the punch you plug an 8 ohm cab into the 4ohm output and so on. Also at 49lbs it’s a lot lighter than my SVT pros. The power switch is ideal for different venue sizes and home playing. The issue is finding one available.

I did my own little comparison yesterday with the RM500 and the V4B through the bb2 with my jazz elite on the same settings ,in both active and passive modes, both amps are nice , I would say the rm gave a more mellow tone for reggae, whereas the v4 is very clean and deep , both are great, just different 🙂

  40. Great catch-up with Mike yesterday - thanks @Cosmicrain. The bass looks great, the wood is much more interesting close up than in the pictures and the shape works brilliantly. Bit unsure about the gold but Mike’s convinced it will look good when the wood darkens after the finish is applied. Very happy with progress.

  42. Doesn’t matter, it’s a valve amp isn’t it? So full power goes to any of the taps. So of course if 4 ohm cabs in the right flavour are easier to find, it’s no issue but if not, use the 4 ohm tap with 2x 8 ohm cabs

  43. Not characterless so much as adjusted. Manufacturers who claim flatter response pickups will typically engineer the pickups so that the inherent peak that all pickups have is shifted to a part of the frequency spectrum which isn't as audible. Alembic soapbar pickups (AXY but also Fatboy) also have low windings for a flatter and broader response and, while it means lower output, the idea was that the lack of gain would be boosted by the onboard active electronics. Flatter response pickups are also ideal for filter based eqs so it all kind of ties together in a well thought out package, even if the actual engineering approach and some of the parts they use are getting a bit long in the tooth.
