  1. I'm beside myself with excitement as I had a new (to me) Jazz Bass delivered today. It's a 2012 model, with the Customer Shop '60s pickups and high mass bridge. This is a significant upgrade for me, from my Squier Classic Vibe 60's (which will soon be for sale) and the first American Fender I've owned for over 10 years (I had a USA Std Telecaster 6 string which I instantly regretted selling). It's also the first ever maple necked instrument I've owned and I love it! I've had it less than an hour and it's well...perfect!! Detailed tone, very growly. The neck is absolutely sublime and is set up with a really low action. I'd be tempted to say it "plays like butter" but I've never actually played butter, so I don't know what that's like. It's just a BEAUTIFUL instrument. Picked it up from Bass Brothers, who were great to deal with. That colour as well though 😵

  2. Good morning everyone Up for sale is the 1982 G&L L2000e I bought from @ped. (His original listing can be seen at https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/459104-sold-gl-l2000e-1982-blackmaple-ohsc) This was a great love affair, and I invested heavily into this bass as a result. It sounds fabulous. I am a fan of these humbuckers. Unfortunately, this bass's neck profile (thin front to back) and nut width is just not working out for me at lengthy rehearsals. I had hoped it would be different, but I'm just plain used to Jazz nut width necks. Anyway.... There is not a single inch of this bass that I do not know intimately. I have cleaned it top to bottom; everything has been cleaned and polished. The tuners and bridge, as well as the exposed pickup poles, benefited hugely from this. I had some fretwork done, and then when I wanted to sort out some wear on the maple fingerboard, I paid to have it re-lacquered and re-fretted with same fret size/type as original. Plays beautifully and has a low setup with a straight neck. The truss rod is fully working. I stumped up for new knobs. The old ones are included in the sale price for their 'mojo', but I quite like the cleaner look of the new ones. I paid to have the rusty control plate and bridge cleaned and re-painted. They look great now, and function as expected. The electronics were serviced and work as you would expect. I will mention that the white preamp toggle switch rotates a little bit inside the switch itself, which is exactly as it is when I bought it, but it works fine, so I have not replaced it. The body I was planning a possible refinish for but ultimately decided against it. It had a large divot carved out where 40 years of a thumb resting between the pickups had carved out a spot, but I opted to have a ramp made to cover this, which also suits my play style. It is attached with double sided stick tape and easily removed. I have shown Ped's original photo of this for context. There are numerous bits of finish thinning, some surface scratches, multiple dings, and similar. I have photographed all that I can find. Nonetheless it has polished up well and looks great. It is a bass with 40 years of mojo! Comes in the original hard shell case and a printout of the instructions. Weight 10.3 lbs. In spite of my considerable investment, I have listed it at the same price Ped originally did. Happy to discuss offers. (As an aside, I bought lightweight G&L USA tuners for it too which fit perfectly, but which I am selling separately here - https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/463686-gl-usa-ultralite-tuners-x-4-bass-sideright-hand-side/) Now £1450 plus shipping to the interested buyer. Pete NB The neck is a bit more vintage tint than these photos seem to show; I suppose it will depend on your monitor. However hopefully they demonstrate its grain and beauty well. And here's what it looks like without the ramp in place - one of Ped's original pictures.

  3. Well…inevitably buyers regret has sank in. If I were wealthier I’d keep this as it’s lovely. Bought when the vino was flowing…always a key time for bass purchases 🙄 A great example of the 50’s Classic Precision (Now Vintera series). 9lb 7oz. Includes Gig Bag Plays superbly - wearing half rounds, but can be restrung with EB rounds if you’d prefer. Covers are present as is thumb rest. A previous owner has drilled the bridge cover holes - they’re a little off. I’ve checked with the cover present and they would be invisible if you decided to drill it correctly. I am happy to do that FOC if you wanted. Generally Very clean for a 2015 bass. Some minor dinks but nothing shocking at all. Sounds lovely - quite focussed but still very warm. Always thought the burst was the quintessential 57 type P. Anyhow - postage is possible at your risk/cost. £25 in UK (more insured) but I do have a reputation for over packing gear so it takes 2 hours to get into it. Cheers Trav x

  4. I am selling this beautiful Marleaux mBass, made in Germany, 2017. The instrument is overall in very good condition with no major dents or scratches. It is a perfectly well balanced instrument, super comfortable to play with many wonderful tone options thanks to the PUs that can be dialed in in parallel, series or single coil mode. The bass sounds perfect in passive mode (default, with passive tone knob) and has the trusty Marleaux 2-Band EQ on board (stacked Treble/Bass knob). Fretwork is second to none allowing a super low setup without fret buzz. The oak veneer on the the back of the headstock impedes any dead spots, fretboard edges were rolled off by Gerald Marleaux for super comfy playing. Each string resonates evenly with the B-string being super present and full, as you would expect from a 35" bass (this one having 33,5"). The offer includes the very sturdy and mint Canto Gigbag, the original certificate, as well as Schaller security locks. Specs: Ca. 4000 g Body: Alder w/ walnut toneblock Top: walnut Neck/fretboard: Maple (5-stripes), super dark ebony Custom Inlay, 12th fret Oak laminate mounted to the back of the head stock to eliminate deadspots Rolled off fretboard edges 33,5 inch scale, tight B-String Bass Culture Dual Humbuckers in wooden covers, 3-way switch to toggle between parallel/Single Coil/serial (the initially installed Delano PUs are for sale on top or in exchange for the Bass Culture PUs) For more specs please refer to the certificate image attached. Happy to ship with DPD within EU at buyers costs. Ask for international shipping fees. Even more happy to respond to your questions. Open to have a call, teams or facetime meeting to demo the bass, if you wish. Soundfiles: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TT2lBwi4bAbIKeibgL8mPGeUHp3-oDcE?usp=sharing

  5. I bought this recently as I decided to move back towards short scale (plus my Rick). However, a few days later, lady luck intervened by shamelessly flouting a dream short scale (Serek Midwestern in capri orange with competition stripes). Which I bought 🙄 So we have here a super quality 2006 CIJ Mustang with very few minor marks, none egregious. Plus its in the rarely seen sunburst livery (most are oly white or fiesta red). Lightweight (7.9 pounds), as these basses almost always are, and with a super slim neck and J proportioned nut width. Fitted with new D'Addario 45-105 nickel rounds (pics show Mustang flats which I have sold separately) and comes with functional but used generic padded gigbag. Collect SW13 London or delivery at cost (UPS, probably £20-30). £750 collected, post at cost within UK. No offers given you may wait many months for another good condition sunburst CIJ example to appear. No trades, sorry, trying to downsize collection.

  6. Here is my really good condition Vintera Jazz in rather spiffing firemist gold. Based on a 60`s Jazz so alder body, thin C neck 7.25 radius, vintage frets, American vintage reverse tuners, 60`s vintage style single coils. Fitted with brand new Ernie Ball Cobalt rounds. Weight is 4.3 kg or 9.5 lb`s. £675 posted to UK mainland on a 48 hour service or £650 collected from Paisley or will drive a bit for a meet, just ask. If it needs delivered, it will be inside a Tourtech case which is for protection only. Price drop to £650 posted, £630 collected

  7. I implore you to look into your heart and remove Ernie from that list. A simple (milk) man digs deep into his soul and wonderfully and poetically finds a way to tell of his love of and devotion to another, whilst battling a ne’er do well (with only one sordid thing on his mind, btw). He follows his heart with catastrophic and heart-wrenching consequences culminating in his own demise, and this doesn’t move you?! “Was that the trees a-rustling, or the hinges of the gate, or Ernie’s ghostly gold tops a-rattling in their crate? They won’t forget Ernie (Ernie)…” And neither should you, my friend. Neither should you… (My Ding-a-Ling, on the other hand…)

  8. Best thing you'll ever do is retire early and join a band or two. Since i retired 6 yrs ago at 56 i've never been so busy with bands altho covid put a stop to it for 2 yrs its back up and running this year with one band booked 2-4 gigs a month and the other a handful but that's more down to member work commitments. People our age have lost their ego's and bands become a more friendly enjoyable place to be (usually). Lot less stressful than when i was younger. I also live in country and rehearsals are 40miles away but its worth it. Enjoy and make the most of it. Dave

  9. I have decided to put up my Status Barracuda 5 string bass for sale. This bass, as with all Status basses, sounds amazing and is a joy to play! It has a wood neck with graphite rods. I bought it a music store a couple of years ago and only used it twice… It is in great condition. The bass weighs 11.5 pounds. It heavy, but that is why it has a powerful sound. The bass has been modified with Bartolini 59 CBJD L1/LN1 jazz bass pickups and a Delano Sonar 2 pre amp. It sounds amazing with this new set up. I will also include the original pre amp and electronics that came with the bass. Please note that I kept the third hum-cancelling pickup in place, but it is not currently connected as the Bartolinis I had a tech put on are hum-cancelling. The original pickups and pre amp will require the third. This is why I kept it in place. 35- inch scale. 18 mm string spacing. The original electronics are the same as the Trace Elliot T- basses. It has separate volume for each pickup, treble, and bass control. The electronics have a passive/active switch for the active electronics. That switch is currently not in place as it is not possible with the Bartolini/Delano set up. I think the bass sounds like a perfect Jazz bass with the new set up. Quality Thomman gig bag included. Bass is located in Los Angeles. I am willing to ship to UK and Europe at buyers expense. Pay Pal only please to protect both of us. I am selling it for $850 US dollars plus shipping.

  11. Agreed with all of that although the lack of a contour on the Mustang doesn't bother me in the slightest. The Sandberg (I'm still tempted to get Scratch-IT to make me a scratch plate with a photo of Lionel Blair on to fit to mine) is refined and oozes class and attention to detail in every regard. In contrast the JMJ feels much more uncouth - but it has a whole level of charm, character and an unquantifiable something about it that makes me pick it up more often than not over the 'Berg. To draw a particularly crap and inappropriate analogy, the Sandberg is the sort of girl you dream of marrying whereas the JMJ would do all manner of unhygienic things with you in a pub toilet if you bought it a Babycham and a bag of pork scratchings. Hope this helps.

  12. Had this made by James Mitchell in Electric Relic Co in Bath Lot of thought went into what i wanted - aftermarket natural 54 contour body in alder not ash, chunky neck no fake logo, hand wound Fralin pickup, cloth wiring, 0.10 orange drop capacitor, old bridge, low tension La Bella flats and then let James do his thing - had to tweak it a bit since getting it and had one proper rehearsal but love the thing already - took 8 weeks from order to delivery approx and sold 2 basses to pay for it - inc one PB that I loved - but I'm happy - it's fairly lightweight and sounds like the 70s - I doubt i'd have the money if this was original - it wasn't cheap but it's a lovely thing

  13. NBD. 2006 CIJ Mustang in the very rare sunburst paint scheme (most are oly white or fiesta red). I bought this before the Easter bank holiday, only for a dream s/s bass to appear (see next post) so may have to sell this on quickly even though its fab 😬

  14. This might be of interest to some here. This is very decent. Kim and Matt from Soundgarden, Krist from Nirvana, Bubba from Void and a couple a really good singers. The riffs are pure Soundgarden, never a bad thing, and it has received quite a few listens from me. Very good indeed. It's nice to see Novoselic playing again, I have to say.

  15. This absolute beauty is a 2009 stingray H in Cabernet Pearl with a matching headstock. Included is the OHSC alongside the original case candy. Before i bought this bass strap locks were fitted so i’m including a strap that matches (almost) the colour of the bass. there are a couple of small knicks on the headstock of the bass and a bit of damage to the case which I have captured in pictures (excuse my dogs they really wanted to be in the pictures). The playability of this bass is really outstanding and she really sings. It really pains me to be selling this bass but if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask :).

  20. The first UK Lockdown in 2020 was a turning point for me. I had done my last gig in Feb / March 2020 just before the pubs closed, then I remember during August they were talking about re-opening the pubs and I realised after 5/6 months off, I hadn't missed gigging at all, which had to be telling me something, right? So I made the decision to quit the bands I was in there and then. As it turned out, live music wasn't allowed in the pubs anyway, so I hadn't left anyone in the lurch, so to speak.

  21. Working on the builders adage of "it's easy enough to remove wood but it's f*******g (*******=lippin ) difficult to put it back!" the hand carving of a neck is very much a case of creeping up to the final shape. So pretty early on I move off the spokeshave onto a medium razor plane blade, which I use two-handed like a pullshave: ...and quite quickly to the even subtler card scraper. Note that a card scraper is designed to act as a plane. You know you are doing it right when you get proper shavings and not dust: So I reckon this is heading towards half-way there: At the thin end, it's getting pretty close to the planned circular arc: But further down the neck, it gets progressively flat-topped: These are the 'haunches' that still have to be removed. And it is these haunches that makes a neck feel chunky much more than the actual depth of a neck: So still a decent amount of timber to be removed sliver by sliver - but, all being well, the basic carve should be finished before the end of the day

  27. I've done fewer gigs so far this year than I would have expected. But I have to say, the ones I've done have been pretty good. I think most punters are up for a bit of live music - having missed it so much. I really missed playing gigs during lockdown, and I missed my band-mates. Some of them are great pals who I'm glad I know. Last summer, my acoustic covers outfit played some really nice pub garden / ale festival outdoor events, and they were brilliant. Thinking more about it - were it not for gigging, I wouldn't have met some fab people, and there are pubs and towns / villages I may never have discovered. Perhaps I just didn't gig enough when I was first in a band many years back? Perhaps my near 25 year absence from playing made me more keen to play live? Perhaps I've met the "right" band-mates? Perhaps it's all of these factors, but I'm really enjoying playing and gigging again, and long may that continue Re the "lugging equipment" issue - I've worked on putting together the lightest weight, least bulky gear that I can reasonably afford, and that helps.

  31. I like having the choice. I've yet to find a definitive 'do it all' bass (although I had a play with a cort gb74 gig bass that is tempting), so I choose the bass I feel best fits the type of gig we're playing. Heavy rock at a biker bar - Yamaha Attitude. Function/party set - G&L JB2. Either way, I'll take the Squier 50s P as a backup. Unless it's a little, short set somewhere, I always take a spare bass, even if it lives in a gig bag. I've had a bass fail once and only once at a gig (dodgy jack socket) and was so glad I had a backup. Likewise, I had an amp head fail during a 20min set at a showcase event. Markbass head in padded case fell out of the boot when we opened the boot door. Seemed fine at first but must have had a microfracture that caused it to go into protect mode after 10mins. Got it fixed and bought a new amp and started taking both so I had a backup. These days, me and the two guitarists each use a helix and an frfr speaker as backline monitoring (with multiple inputs).. One of them also brings an HX Stomp as a backup with patches loaded for each of us, so if one helix dies, we are covered. Similarly, if an frfr speaker dies the others have spare inputs. Regardless, we all go direct to FOH as well. Heck, in a dire emergency, I could probably use my Nux Mighty Plug, or my G10s wireless (receiver has XLR output) straight into the desk. Our drummer's kit is in immaculate condition and he takes great care of it (he does actually bring a spare snare drum sometimes). He also has a roland trigger module device with two pads and bass drum trigger. So even if he had a catastrophic bass drum/bass pedal or snare failure he's be able to work around with with the trigger. Our old drummer came back after a break as a co-lead singer. So we even have a backup singer if one can't do it!

  32. Ive not found the FSR all black PJ Mustang or the JMJ to suffer tbh. But that’s coming from the idiot that had been playing Mustangs for about 3 years before realising they were slab bodied, so maybe don’t pay too much attention to me! 🤣

  34. I guess that is wise....I've just never had a problem. I have had more issues with vehicle failures/power failures (at the venue), bad leads, drunken guitarists I'm guess that, if I had to, I could probably change a string in about 3 minutes. The only thing I don't trust is the 9v in my main bass, and the 9v in my backup.....hmmm, maybe I need 3????

  40. Well, no guarantee you'd like the Oxford Sound better, it does sound different, but in my personal opinion better, and as said the range of the controls, EQ points and how they overall reacts and interacts seems to work better for bass as well, at least as far as I am concerned. To me it seems like it is a better pedal all together, and especially for bass, but all that means nothing if the American Sound fits you personal preferences better. Though regardless I'd say that you should definitely try it out, not sure about the return policy of the shop where you bought it, but in any case I would think you most likely would find a good use for it, even if it turns out not to be an improvement to you over the American Sound, if not as a preamp then at least as an overdrive or distortion, cause the overdrive and distortion tones is something else in this too, on bass at least, can get really snappy and grindy. If you liked the Joyo Orange Juice or just like Orange type amps and the drive of them in general I am pretty certain though that you are going to love the Oxford Sound. Like the Orange Juice is to the Oxford Sound what those taste samples you sometimes get in supermarkets is to a full portion/meal prepared of/with the product, to be consequent and stick with the food analogy, not exactly an expert in soufflés though.

Last buses running at around 11 pm made getting home pretty difficult, but I saw Fleetwood Mac, Cream, John Mayall, Jeff Beck Group, Hendrix etc etc many times at gigs including the Ricky Tick, The Starlight Ballroom, The Manor House, UFO, The Flamingo, Middle Earth and the Blue Moon in Hayes. Never played at any of those though. I did get to play the Marquee, Ealing Club, 100 Club, Cavern, Tiles, Reading Festival and both Whiskey A Go-Go's, but the one gig I wished I had played was Woodstock, and maybe also the Fillmore's, East and West.
