  1. So I sit down with a bass, not long after I had woken, but one I am pretty familiar with. Play for a bit, decide for move to the bridge pickup, disaster strikes! The bridge pickup is really quiet and wimpy, something is broken, I've had a wiring issue in this guitar before so I immediately think the worst. After a couple of minute of checking the problem recurs and mentally bemoaning the difficulties that lie ahead I realise that I'm turning the bass EQ right down, not adjusting the blend. I think I will avoid sharp tools today.

  4. It's gas to see so many who dismiss it as a joke, avoid it, don't like it and haven't listened to the music, still weighing in with their insightful interpretation of the event they didn't watch, simmering with outrage at how unfair it all is 😂 The voting, Ukraine aside, was, if anything, less geographically motivated than usual and certainly anything but political. The UK won the jury voting, Ukraine came fourth, behind Spain and Sweden. The juries consist of music industry types and musicians. If there was a grand political vote at play, surely it would be seen in the public voting? However, the UK came 5th in the public vote, even behind Serbia, whose stance on the Ukraine invasion is, at best, lamentable. Boris and Truss have made a lot of noise recent weeks but the UK's reluctance to take in refugees has not been forgotten. Still, surely the UK would at least be ahead of Serbia in public opinion if there was a political slant to the public voting? What has Spain done, politically, to get public votes other than send an attractive, scantily clad lady with a very well choreographed and performed song (whether it is to your tastes or not, it's the kind of thing the young people seem to like) for three minutes of well executed light entertainment? Moldova's bar-room punk polka didn't go anywhere with the juries but the crowd on both Tuesday and Saturday absolutley loved it, so it's no surprise the public voted for it. Serbia's quirky effort was very memorable and well done, for what it was. It's worth mentioning that, even if you didn't like Ukraine's song (if you even heard it), the mixing of traditional and modern music styles, including hip-hop and electronic music, is quite popular in the East. Quite a few former Soviet states are reasserting their cultural history, after years of oppression, and mixing it with modern music. It's a big thing, just listen to Shum by Go_A from last year. Ukraine's song was not without merit. This year, the UK sent a very likeable guy with a great voice and a massive social media following, along with a song which people seemed to enjoy listening to. I mean, it's possible people voted for him because Boris visited Kyiv long after the Premiers of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia had done the same thing but, let's be honest, it's very, very unlikely. It's a Saturday night light-entertainment show. Occasionally, one must trust Occam's Razor. This is one of them 😉

  6. Hi all, I know there are a few drummers on here, but has anyone taken up drumming after years and years of bass playing? I've just bought a used cheap ish electronic kit, with the aim of learning to play. It's a mesh kit so quieter than a rubber one, and to be honest I'm very impressed with the sounds available. Headphones on, aux in, and away into my own world! I'm the type of bassist who really concentrates to lock in with the drummer and get really tight to work as a rhythm section rather than just a drummer and bass player. However, after just a few short goes using online lessons I'm blown away about how wrong I've been for years regarding what makes up a simple beat, or what i was hearing as a straight 4/4. It's really made me appreciate a lot more what is actually going on. For example, a simple beat: Kick on 1 and 3.5 Snare on 2 and 4 Hi hat doing straight 8ths. Even the fills- completely different to what I thought I was hearing. If anyone gets a chance, or has the opportunity to give it a go, do it. It can only help your appreciation and playing. I do believe though being a bass player has really helped with the timing and rhythm feel, luckily i dont think bassists have to start from scratch and learn rhythm, timing and feel as well as the drums. Only had the kit a week, and loving it!

  8. I don't really like any of of the 'big bass names' that get rolled out on BC. Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pasty-Riots, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, you know the ones. All very talented but tedious to listen to. I do love a good pop tune though. Maybe I shouldn't be here? 😁

  10. Hey guys, I am selling my Yamaha Attitude LTD II bass as I am now moving almost exclusively back to playing guitar and I just can't justify holding onto something I don't use, no matter how much I had wanted to own one for years. This is an Attitude LTD II from the Yamaha guys in Japan. The Japanese Yamaha guys are renowned for their fit, finish and overall attention to detail - this is a superbly made bass. It's an October 2005 bass (you can find the serial number system document on Yamaha's website, this one is numbered using the classification system "E #10". The bass is in great condition, having clearly not had a hard life prior to me owning it. There is some natural aging to the dark chrome parts of the instrument, but it looks to be very nicely aged overall. There aren't any dings or scratches, the gloss finish on the fretboard still has a mirrior shine to it. The frets are in great shape - unlike Billy, I never really bend strings on bass. The D-Tuner works perfectly, the neck is in good health too. Again, unlike Billy, I'm not a Yamaha endorser so I never tried the "neck bending" thing he does, as unlike Billy, I can't get a new bass for free if it goes wrong! The bass has been modified by it's previous owner. The Dimarzio Willpower P pickup was removed and a set of Lace Alumitone P and J pickups were added. The body was routed to add the J bar, but it was done very well with no damage to the finish on the visible edges of the routing whatsoever. The previous owner also changed the wiring so the controls are now a volume knob and a pickup selector that clicks through the woofer pickup, the P pickup solo, P and J combined and the J pickup solo. The original Dimarzio pickup, tone pot and the knob to fit on the outside of the body are included with the bass. I realise that as a modified bass, it isn't worth the same as an unmodified bass, but that is reflected in my asking price. However, I had always wanted an Attitude bass just because I loved watching Billy use his on Steve Vai's "Live at the Astoria" DVD, but I probably wouldn't have picked a standard one up, as I really can't make do with a P pickup on it's own. So if you're like me and really want to own an Attitude bass, but felt like the P pickup and woofer alone wouldn't give you the tonal range you need, this could be a great bass for you. Personally, I almost never plugged the woofer pickup in (the bass has two output sockets, one for the woofer and one for the PJ pickups) and ran the bass almost exclusively with the P and J pickups. The Lace Alumintones are hot and ballsy as hell. This bass probably isn't great if you're playing bass with a wedding band, trying to quietly pluck your way through jazz standards during dinner service. The bass comes with the fitted Yamaha hardcase. You are more than welcome to come and try the bass out at my house; I live in Bedlington, Northumberland, about 30 minutes from the city centre of Newcastle. Alternatively, we can meet up or I could deliver the bass to you within a reasonable radius of my location. I can also ship the bass via courier. Of course. this would need to be insured shipping, but I'm more than happy to work out a price for shipping based on quotes if the buyer wants the bass posted. For payment, I can take cash for an in-person handover. Bank transfer or PayPal are also options. If you have any questions, please give me a shout. Cheers, Dave

  11. Up for sale is my Epiphone Masterbilt DeLuxe Century archtop acoustic bass. I bought this new in 2018 and have gigged it regularly since. Although well gigged, it has been babied so is in great condition, with only a couple of small marks on the body. Fitted with Labella 760N Black Nylon strings, which I think are an improvement on the stock D'addario tapewounds. The original piezo pickups on these are ok, but I wanted something better, so I had some dialog with Aaron at Kent Armstrong pickups about other options that would work for me. He wound me a custom floating pickup which transformed the live sound, giving a lovely warm, full tone. This has been wired directly to the output jack, with the piezo disconnected. The bass now has a beautiful double bass type sound which worked brilliantly for the old time stuff I played. Also sounds great unplugged, and is louder with roundwounds, but I prefer the tone of the nylon strings. The bass has the matching Epiphone hard case. I will include some Bobs Fits F hole blockers made especially for the bass. I got these in case I had any issues with feedback on bigger stages, but I’ve never had to use them. The original tuner buttons have been replaced with Schallers. £695 ono. Collection from Beccles, Suffolk. I have a box so shipping is also a possibility. Cheers.

  12. I lucked out when I bought my mandolin some 15+ years ago. A mid range model that happened to be particularly well made. I've played the same model when others have had one and this one just lucked out when they selected the wood - all solid wood and a tone to die for. I was playing country type stuff on it with my fairly basic playing (theory being that as a bass player, I could manage the transition to an instrument that has 4 string tunings too). Over lockdown I started mucking about with my old mate from Sixth Form playing 80s Alternative / Goth stuff on old folk instruments. My mandolin playing suddenly skyrocketed the second I stopped trying to play country style! I upgraded the tuners first. Then I flipped the knobs to wooden ones, changed the bridge cover to all black and it grew from there. I had some mandolin grommets shipped over from Nashville to deaden the sound of the strings behind the bridge and further worsened it's environmental footprint by getting an arm rest from India. Finally I got @TimAl to design a fantastic custom pickguard for me and a unique goth rock take on old folk! I think it has turned out pretty well and I look forward to taking it out locally across a few shows over the summer. I appreciate it's a bit niche for most of you but if you like looking at pretty instruments, fill your boots... (& yes the hard case further demonstrates my attention to the pose!)

  16. It depends on whether they are properly specified. Many Chinese clones or copies of evaluation boards cut costs by using component brands that "overspecify". Companies like ICEPower do not scrimp on the components and that is why the DIY Audio forums are full of people whose module has blown shortly after powering up, There is no reason why a properly designed and manufactured Class D amp should be unreliable. TVs have been running with SMPS for around 20 years and with Class D amps (albeit lower powered) for almost as long. For example 65" plasma displays/TVs had 700-800W switch mode power supplies and were/are extremely reliable. Mine was 15 years old and working fine but I left it on the wall when I moved as it was too big for my new place. Incidentally I was Technical Manager for large screen displays at Panasonic Europe before I retired so I had access to reliability data.

  18. Hi! I have for sale my Alleva Coppolo LG5, I ordered directly to Jimmy Coppolo in 2013. Bass is in very good condition, no scraches or dents. Bass has a special rosewood fingerboard called by Jimmy Coppolo "Jimmywood" (is a brasilian rosewood species), please read on internet about that. As far as I heard that option is not anymore availeble and I paid like an upgrade for this bass. I have all papers including customs fees I paid in 2013. This bass sounds so good and I did not think I will ever sell it, but the time came. Bass cames with a hardcase and 2 battery/electronics covers. More details in pictures. Please NO TRADES! Price is 4500 euro.

  19. In 1960 minor pop phenomenon Mr Johnny Gentle engaged in a short tour of Scotland taking in such illustrious venues as the Regal Ballroom in Nairn. Mr Gentle's hastily assembled backing band for the tour comprised five young Liverpudlians who normally gigged under the frankly silly name of The Beatles and nothing was ever heard of them again. 25. I love playing live. It’s what I wanted to do from the time I saw those cool gatefold sleeve live LPs in the 80s from bands like Iron Maiden, Scorpions and Kiss. I’m lucky enough to be out playing fairly regularly at the moment, and doing some good gigs with some great musicians. Everyone knows the downsides, which are many if you choose to focus on them. But the feeling of doing a cool gig, playing with musicians who fire you up and an audience who are really up for it - that’s the nearest thing to magic.

  37. To be fair, I think "nice enough voice" is a bit of an understatement. His voice is pretty outstanding. Unlike most of the has beens, or never were's that the UK usually pumps out for Eurovision, he already had a massive following. He was in fact the biggest UK music artist on TikTok up until very recently, when he was overtaken by Ed Sheeran. Don't get me wrong. I can't stand Eurovision, and I absolutely loathe TikTok, but it's definitely the social media platform of the future. He was shared by several top tier, high profile artists on their own pages after covering their songs. So he already had a pretty large global profile even before Eurovision. I have to begrudgingly respect that the guy has, at the very least, put the work in and built a huge following off his own back.

  39. As they say in the press, never let the truth get in the way of a good story. I have investigated and you can make up your own minds. As an example, the ICEPower 250ASX2 power module is £299.88 from Profusion in the UK. That is the power module in the Aguilar TH500 among many others. To replace the Mains transformer and power valves in an Ampeg SVT is £456 from Surrey Amps. An SVT output transformer is £297.46 from the Tube Amp Doctor in the USA (I could not find UK stock). To replace the 6 output vales/tubes (SOVTEK) alone on an SVT is £240 from Watford Valves.

  41. So I’ve been on a bit of a quest, and last week yielded these two fine basses from my fave 2013-16 range of Fender US Standards, a 2013 from our very own @vincbtand a 2014 from the ‘bay. Match very nicely with my fave 2015. All that was needed was A-String Retainers and Hipshot Drop-D Extenders. The 13 gets the gigging band, the 14 gets the classic rock band.

  48. Superb Trace elliot BLX-150 Bass Guitar Amplifier with cover. In full working order and lovely condition! Barely a mark for 25 odd years old! Great sound and surprisingly loud for the size! Don't confuse this with the smaller BLX-80 combo, it's much, much better!!! The HF horn is reason enough to buy on it's own and it cost a fortune when new, hence why you really don't see them come up fo sale often! The compressor is one of the most transparent I've ever used also, I believe it's one of their dual band ones the same as in the pedal and the top of the range heads. Any questions, please feel free to ask! Please note that shipping is possible at buyer’s cost and risk for uk mainland only, for highland or island areas please ask before purchasing
