Note: I've seen something that I fancy so temporary price drop to £750 until one of my basses sells. Here's a nice L2000 that I got in a recent trade. It sounds and feels great as you would expect. I was told it was made in 1992, although I can't see a way to be sure of this. I would have dated in then or earlier, maybe late 80's. Anyhow it is a lovely usable classic. This is a used bass so there ere are a couple of "dings" on the front but in general it is in great condition for its age. Trades? I would like a G&L L1000, SB2, LB1 or maybe a nice Fender Precision of Jazz Special/boxer. I have included some pictures from the previous owner as theirs were better than mine lol. Local pickup or trial welcome but can post at cost if need be. Weight is 4.3kg8 points

Stingray 40th anniversary edition with paperwork and official hard case. Has been gigged and rehearsed with but is in excellent condition. Plays incredibly well and sounds immense. Build quality is exceptional. I have too many basses and I have a Status which does the same thing as this but also has fairy lights … More info here: https://www.music-man.com/instruments/basses/old-smoothie More photos on request, I’m currently down with covid so responses might be a bit slow or nonsensical 🤣7 points

In the two years or so of working from home, I've gone down a few musical rabbit holes and have 'discovered' a number of bands that are eye-openingly, incredibly good. A few of the best are below, with an album suggestion should you choose to listen to them (I've also put on of my favourite songs from each album in brackets if you just want a taste!) I would say if you do listen to any of the below, do try and listen to the full album as some don't begin with the best songs... Toehider - I Like It (Concerning Lix and Fairs) Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant (Salt) Haken - The Mountain (Atlas Stone) Artificial Language - The Observer (Unself Portrait) Moron Police - A Boat On The Sea (The Phantom Below) Vola - Applause From A Distant Crowd (Alien Shivers) Voices From The Fuselage - Odyssey: The Founder Of Dreams (Via) Symphony X - Underworld (Nevermore) All of these albums are absolutely outstanding for different reasons, but all do walk a similar line in terms of genre. If you have a bit of spare time, give some of these a listen, to me they represent exactly what I love about music (a hugely subjective statement), maybe you'll enjoy them too!7 points

I got this bass in 2018 after looking for one since the 1990s with no success. But, as I can play the DB that's inevitably what everyone asks for and this Fender never gets played any more. When fretless is called for my other one (which no-one will want to buy) usually fits the bill better. Therefore, it might as well be offered to someone who will make good use of it rather than sit in a corner in its (somewhat tatty, Thomann-branded) case. The only changes since I got it are a professional setup and the fitting of TI Jazz flatwounds. The strap can be included, if you want it. I don't plan to drop the price as I don't really need to sell this, and I'm not interested in trades at the moment - sorry about that. Apologies for the poor photos; having some trouble with the phone camera.6 points

This is a beautiful 2015 Fender Jazz JB-62 in Fiesta Red. It has a particularly nice rosewood fingerboard with very little fret wear. Plays and sounds like a Jazz should and weighs in at 9.6lbs on the bathroom scales. It has the chrome covers and comes with the hard case in the pics. I have sturdy packaging so it could be sent for around £20, but I'd prefer pick up or meet if possible. The pics show the Schaller strap lock buttons, but I've put the originals back on. This really is a super clean example, and I wouldn't be selling but for my P bass which is getting all the attention. I think the strings are D'Addario 45-100 round wounds. These look great in Fiesta Red.....suitably vintage.6 points

For sale is my USA Fender Precision Pro II in Miami blue. Only a couple of faint surface scratches to the body, otherwise immaculate. Comes with Fender hardcase, paperwork and tools. Weight is about 4.2kg I really need to keep my lightweight Roscoe due to my crap back so I withdrew it from sale but that dose mean I have to part with this which is a shame because this is a belter but hey-ho! I've owned a good few US Fenders over the years and this one dose stand out in build quality and finish. I found the neck profile much more pleasing than my other Pbasses, I believe it's based on early 60's dimensions, can't be certain but it really is nice. The reshaped neck joint with the 5 bolts works well should you venture up the dusty end of the fretboard. Its currently strung with newish DR Nickel Lo-Riders 45-105. I would obviously prefer collection or meet/deliver within reasonable distance but I do have a good box and packaging for shipping. I will only use UPS at £35. If you wish to arrange an alternative it's fine by me. No trades please, sale only. The price is firm, and a bit less than I paid for not too long ago.6 points

One of my favourite local venues last night. We thought we were in for a kicking to be honest because Big Country were playing upstairs but we still managed to pack the place. Our drummer's (very attractive) day job colleagues showed up mid way through the first set and once pretty women start dancing then everyone starts dancing.6 points

It's nasty to keep your money and give crap excuses. It's not nasty to say enough is enough and I will have to get the money back through formal means.4 points

This is a very good suggestion - I believe it's called a 'letter before action'. I did this with a somewhat notorious UK Bass builder after months of issues, it worked a treat as in reality they knew they didn't have a leg to stand on and were hoping to shine me on indefinitely thinking I'd let it slide. If you show (and mean) intent to take legal action they will cave pretty quick as they have no chance at winning the case, they could also be liable for legal costs too so it will cost them more than just paying you your owed money.4 points

Absolutely stonking gig last night at the Farmyard bikers rally in Helmsley. A packed house of hundreds inside the marquee and apparently just as many dancing outside who couldn’t get in. The organiser was so chuffed he sorted a photo session at the end of the set. Love gigs like this 😁4 points

I’ve got sad love for gigging at the moment. Terry, one of the guitarists in my covers band, Night Shift, has stage 4 cancer. He’s undergoing the treatment and has been told it’s controllable but not curable. He wants to gig as much as he can, while he can - music means so much to him. The previous two weekends to this one we gigged three times in each. He’s shattered after each one and sleeps for 12 hours. We carry and set up all his gear for him. We are having some great times, but it’s bitter-sweet.4 points

SOLD WILL NOW SHIP to mainland UK address at buyers cost of £40. This is for Parcelforce Express 24 next day, fully protected, trackable delivery. FINAL PRICE DROP now £800: Fender MIA / USA Precision Bass, from Corona, California, 2008, with Gator hard case. Long scale 34 inch. Black with gloss poly 'modern C' maple neck & fretboard. Usual USA made refinements: rolled fretboard edges, string thru' bridge, graphite reinforcing rod thru neck. Fretboard was cleaned with Dunlop 65 spray cleaner on recent string change. Strings are Rotosound RS66LDN nickel plated roundwound in 45-105 and the bass has barely been played since they went on. The pickups are upgraded to Fender Custom Shop 62s (these only became standard from 2012 onwards), and it has upgraded electrics in the form of a KiOgon loom (wired to Fender US Standard specs - CTS 250 pots, .47 Capacitor & Switchcraft Jack). Solderless screw terminals so a doddle if you ever want to change pickups (you may not need to though as the CS62s are great). HiMass vintage bridge. Fender lightweight vintage paddle tuners. It comes with a Gator Deluxe ABS hard case case to which there are no keys. No paperwork, just a Fender truss rod tool. The bass is fitted with a 3 ply black/white/black plate with truss rod cutout. The bass weighs 4.2Kg (9.2lbs) on my digital luggage scale. The width at the nut is 41mm. The bass is in good used, gigged condition for a 13 & a half year old instrument. There is a fair bit of minor scratching / swirl marks on the body & scratchplate as you would expect with a black bass. Only visible up close and quite hard to photograph though I have tried. Please contact me if you want any more photos. There are a few minor bumps, but no paint removed. As shown in the photos, there is a small ding on the back of the neck behind the 8th fret, no more than 1mm deep and I can't say it has bothered me when playing. There is a small lacquer chip on the fingerboard edge between the 12th & 13th frets. A little fret wear but the neck is in great shape otherwise. There are half a dozen small 'nibbles' on the end of the headstock. A black bass has to have some battle scars, right?! A great bass, but selling as despite always being a one bass man, I ended up buying 3 recently, and have decided to let this one go to a good home. Buyer can either collect in person from Southport, Merseyside/Lancs, or I will post at buyer’s cost of £40 as stated at top of listing. Please reply in topic or PM with any questions or if more photos are needed. Thanks. Final price drop to £800, need this gone. Can’t believe it’s still here! NO TRADE OFFERS WHATSOEVER PLEASE SOLD3 points

Same with the bass part. You'd be surprised by how many 60s and 70s songs there are where the foundation of the bass is the left hand of the piano or organ and the bass is noodling aimlessly away in the mid range. In these cases unless your band has a good keyboard player you almost always end up playing something that owns more to keyboards than the bass guitar part.3 points

Playing gigs is one of the great joys of music but it can also turn into a great pain. I'm 63 now and have been basically gigging since I was 16. For four or five years in the 80s I was full time but for a good 15 years after that music earnings made a huge supplement to my earnings at the 9-5. It helps to have wide musical tastes and very little musical snobbery - I can enjoy myself playing anything from showtunes to rock to punk to jazz to folk etc. Also an ability to accept that the best musos are not always gifted with the easiest personalities to get on with - compromises sometimes have to be made for the benefits of one's own sanity! Now I have retired from the day job and the gigs I do tend to be smaller, quieter, more intimate things. Costs are covered but the sheer economics of that type of gig mean that we'll never really make money from them and that's ok with me as long as I enjoy it and don't get any hassle! Keep gigging @Bluewine for as long as you enjoy it - it keeps you young!3 points

I have no affiliation to this seller on eBay, I just thought I would share this. ’73 Precision, looks original, and it’s the same price I paid for my ‘73 earlier this year from ATB Guitars, except this one on eBay has the original case and mine doesn’t. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325234663345?hash=item4bb97f1fb1%3Ag%3AzlUAAOSwr3VinQj1&LH_ItemCondition=4 Rob3 points

I step onto a stage and I can actually feel my self relax. Like being out working all day then sitting back in your chair with a brew. I wasn't born to perform - that stuff's all cobblers , bit I've done it so often and for so long that being on stage feels like my domain. Just as the Williams don't belong on my stage , I just don't belong in the audience with them. You ever want to see a bloke feeling uncomfortable - just come and watch me in an audience. Up on stage I never worry about the mistakes I know I'll make - I just deal with them. That's what experience brings. Playing a gig takes more than musicianship. My attitude is 'Im good at this and anybody who thinks otherwise is plain wrong'. The odd heckler - who cares. They want to share my adulation for a moment but they can't , it's just jealousy. As I always ask them over the mic - ' do I come to where you work and tell you how to flip burgers?'.3 points

So - I picked up a power amp today - now racked with the two preamps. Nextstep is to wire it up and give it a go!3 points

We had a drummer in a folk dance band who did a similar thing kept saying that he was going to quit. What he really wanted was fro the rest of of us to say "Please don't quit". Eventually he mentioned a date - "I'm not doing anymore after Christmas", so we stopped asking him. Apparenly he was then moaning that!. He was good drummer (in the folk dance idiom) but was a bugger to work with - always turning up to gigs "Just in time", or just too late!3 points

Excellent firing! He probably would have kept threatening to leave for the next ten years.3 points

Up for sale is my stunning Am pro Precision V in Black with maple neck. Freshly strung with a set of DR lo Rider nickel 45-125 and upgraded with a Nordstrand NP5F pickup. B string is nice and tight and sounds like a natural extension to the other strings Weight is 4kg and it balances really nicely on the strap. It does have a few marks on it but they are very minor and only on the body, the neck and headstock look to be unmarked. Comes complete with original hardcase and tool kit which are also in really nice condition (and key) Collection welcomed from Leicester, also happy to meet up within a reasonable distance or I can courier within the Uk Apologies for the photo quality… it would appear that my skills with a camera are even worse than my skills with a bass😂😂 Might be tempted by a trade on a 4 or 5 string but must be sensible weight. Thanks for looking3 points

Around 5% of all road traffic accidents in 2019 involved at least 1 driver or rider over the legal alcohol limit. So, statistically driving drunk must be safer, as sober drivers cause around 95% of the accidents.2 points

Well, I took both basses to the rehearsal but the old faithful 2012 US Precision stayed in its case - the sunburst 2010 with GHS flats sounded just perfect, even though it was only going through a TE Elf and Super Compact. I will try a back to back comparison with the 2012 US Standard that has LaBella 760 FLs on, but both sound wonderful.2 points

I love Yamahas...guitars, basses, saxophones - but their jack sockets aren't the most long-lasting. It isn't the plate - it's the socket itself. Some Yamahas are fitted with barrel jacks...and, as your luthier rightly says, they are a bit of a design compromise. They look like this : The design is flawed, but te best of a bad bunch are the ones made by Switchcraft...so if you have to have a like for like replacement, ask for Switchcraft to be fitted. Much more reliable are this type of socket, which is, I think what your luthier has adapted and fitted to your TRB: ...and this is probably also fitted (or the stereo equivalent) to your Nathan East. Again, the 'industry standard' for these is Switchcraft (and we're only talking a few £'s each). Honestly, a Switchcraft jack like this should last you out. Other makes last between 1 and 10 years max... In my experience, the ones Yamaha fit (and in all other aspects, I love them) are towards the lower end of that range. So, the jackplate itself on tbe Natan East is fine. But get someone to fit you a Switchcraft jack onto it and I don't think you'll have any more issues.2 points

I have one of these and it is by far the best bass I have ever had. It sounds amazing and the quality is spot on. The colour is gorgeous but never photographs well, it is brighter and more metallic in real life. They are subtly different to the American pro in several ways and they all add up to make it feel like a different beast altogether. This an utter bargain at that price.2 points

Here we go I use the Xvive strap thingy to keep the cables how I like them at the guitar end. At the board, the headphones goes into my rolls monitor amp and the other end into the start of my pedal chain. In this case a cheap preamp I only use if I end up playing a passive bass. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162396900311?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=0vMhZxlXRBm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=kIsNhjMUScq&var=461424818813&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY2 points

If you’ve developed that soft ‘mwah’ fretless touch, you may need to fret a little harder, I love that growly buzz with flats but find it’s from fretting lighter than usual It could of course need a good fret dress 😄2 points

A few years back, I was in a four piece covers band - 2 x guitar, bass and drums. One of the guitars was always moaning about something and saying he was going to call it quits. He was just somewhat draining, a real energy vampire. He once more said he was about to quit to the other guitarist a day or two before a gig. On the night of the gig, the good guitarist announced over the mic the "Ladies and gentlemen, sadly this is ******'s last gig. He's decided to hang up his guitar. Let's give him a night to remember!" Suffice to say, he wasn't expecting that and was rather taken aback. I mean all we did was help him make that final step We carried on as a three piece after that and were much happier!2 points

A wee update. We got the guitarist I had been speaking to on the phone the other week down to the studio. The guy was superb! He has all the gear, SG with Angus Young`s sig pickups, 100 watt Marshall head and cab with an attenuator thank God and all the licks and tones. Turns out he is a doctor who played guitar in bands a few years back but always wanted to play in an ac/dc band but never had the chance. Super nice guy and he was smiling so much whilst playing that at first it was a bit freaky as I`m not used to happy guitar players! So it just goes to show that some people who answer Gumtree adverts are alright.2 points

Credit where credit is due, David Gilmore's hair looks very good in this clip. Regarding Tony Franklin's bass playing, many watching this performance today may accuse him of overplaying. Not me, though. Everyone was trying to play like that in the '80s! It was the zeitgeist of the day. No bearded hipsters with flatwound strings in on a P Bass played through a valve- powered radiogram intent on lecturing you about "authenticity." I had a mullet for a good while during this era , and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Looking back now, I looked like an Australian car mechanic in the midst of some kind of a mental breakdown. I had a custom Jaydee too, and a Trace Eliot amp. Perhaps I could send some old pictures of myself to Tony Franklin and he could critique me?2 points
