For sale (no trades) is my rare 1980 Ibanez RS800BK Roadster, this is the original RoadstEr (not to be confused with the later RoadstAr, or cheaper mid 80’s RoadstAr II Series). The original Roadster Series were made between 1979-81 at the legendary Fujigen Gakki factory in Japan during the golden period of Japanese guitar and bass production. The original Roadster Series alongside the Musician Series were the top of the range Ibanez basses, made by hand, sharing the same hardware and Super 4 pickups. Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy toured playing the Ibanez RS900 Roadster - essentially same bass but with 2-band active electronics. The RS800 has passive electronics. Made January 1980, all original, has a gloss black mahogany body and lacquered rock maple neck. The neck features some neat Ibanez tech called “TR Tuned Response” which basically eliminates dead spots. Sweetheart nickel tuners. Accu-Cast B High Mass bridge, and the Ibanez Super 4 high output single coil pickup. The electrics work clean, no noise or static turning pots. The bass does have marks, scratches and dings commensurate with age, mostly to the back and sides, in very good condition for a bass 42 years old. The neck has a 41mm nut, super comfy to play like all Ibanez necks from this period. The positioning of the Super 4 pickup produces a P-Bass / Stingray / Rick type sound dependant on strings. The pickup has a heavy mid bias with thumping low-end and crisp highs. Now Sold10 points

***** NOW SOLD PENDING PAYMENT ***** I purchased this from a fellow Bass Chat member just over 2 years ago. It's a 1998 model made from swamp ash with a rosewood board. I recently had a newer G&L pre-amp fitted by KGB music in Birkenhead and Barry commented on how it stood out as a very resonant bass versus the other G&L's he's previously come across. The B string sounds very focused due to the through-body stringing and 3 over 2 headstock. It has a great action and plays very easy up and down the neck. Considering its age, there's no high frets or buzzing. It has a lot of flexibility due to the pre-amp and has the G&L growl from the combination of the pickups and preamp. It has a big, heavy sound with a very powerul output. There are signs of wear on the bass; the tuners are tarnished but work perfectly well. There's various smaller marks and scratches on the body and a small crack around the gloss finish near one of the pots (see photo below), but not the wood and the pot itself is not damaged (brand new as part of the pre-amp recently fitted). The nut looks yellowed, but no signs of damage. Weighs 9.8 lbs. Recently put some new Ernie Ball Nickel's on (super long) and much prefer them to D'Addario. Great detail in the sound of the B string. As mentioned previously; I've had a new G&L pre-amp fitted and also a newer bridge. Comes with a G&L case. The reason I am selling is that I have a U.S. L2000 and other 4 strings and am less into 5 string basses these days due to the music I am now playing. Asking price as above plus shipping. Arrived on Friday afternoon, gigged later that evening. Not much to say, I am no longer surprised at the utter quality of Thomann's house brand. A really comfortable bass to play, light as a feather, great sound, stayed in tune - kind of ticks all the boxes7 points

Just watched Robert Plant and Alison Kraus. I may be in the minority but I thought it was a breathtaking set, easily one of my highlights. They completely blew me away.7 points

Finally....the first gig since our last one which was on February 27 2020! Things are starting to open up here now and our jazz standards/swing quartet returned to play at a craft brewery that we have played at a number of times before Covid. It is in a small town an hour and a half from me and we were worried about attracting a crowd, partly because our pay is based on cover charge only and also because it is an out of the way place. As it turned out we had an almost full room of about 40 of our "fans" and some them drove for over an hour to get to the gig. The band has been together for 11 years and it was great to see some familiar faces and get out in public again and the crowd was in the mood to enjoy the evening and was one of the best we have ever played for. It was also the first outing in a club for my Shen SB 100 and it sounded fantastic through our Bose PA, band was in fine form and we had a fun night and made good money for a gig like that and we will be back at that venue in August. The downside is that our vocalist/keyboard player who is very talented and popular is moving away sometime in the next few months and the band will have to fold after 11 years of fun, it's been a great ride and we still have a few more gigs and we plan to make the most of them.7 points

Wonderful, high-end arch-top electric bass cum EUB. Features the Cooltube preamp and piezo pickup, which together make it sound very DB-ish. Can be played horizontal, with strap, or fully upright on a supplied brass pin. Curved ebony board - a la DB - so can even be bowed. Previous owner @Happy Jack had his luthier inset big side dots on the side of the board to aid in intonation (a godsend, AFAIAC). Comes with amazing looking but heavy-as-heck faux snakeskin hard case and a much more gig-friendly Tm and Will padded cello case. Asking £1500 collected or meet up in or close to SW13 area (south of Hammersmith Bridge). No delivery I am afraid given the bulk of the bass plus two cases/bags. Here's an example of me playing it upright on the pin (always draws lots of comments): https://www.facebook.com/wilybo/videos/velvet-windows-the-wily-bo-walker-acoustic-band/2424423044506352/ Specs: https://www.takamine.com/TB106 points

My current bass heads include Class AB (both valve and solid state) and Class D. Each is a good example of its type and I enjoy playing them all. I see no value in generalisations based on personal preference. If something works for you, that’s a win so go with it.6 points

A return gig at The Riverside in Dumfries for the Punk band last night. Always a great audience in this venue. They just get really into their punk music. Lots of very positive comments at the end. One guy said he couldn't understand how i played punk fingerstyle. He also said he loved my composure on stage and likened me to Jimmy Page but i think he may have meant JPJ instead. Said i made it look easy. The blisters on my plucking fingers tell me otherwise . Another guy that just happened to be passing and heard the band came in and after 2-3 songs called his mates to come down, "you got to hear these guys, f****g amazing". He told the guitarist's wife at the interval about it. His 3 mates arrived before the 2nd set and loved it. I think we had a captive audience thrown in as everyone was wearing summer wear with girls in summer dresses and it came down in torrents of rain half way thru 2nd set. They had nowhere to go Lots of vids but all direct to FB and difficult to copy over i'm afraid. An hours drive home and a bit of coffee and toast before bed. All in all a great wee night6 points

Interesting one for us last night. A do in a big club room about an hour's drive away. PA was provided - they asked for, and we sent, a full spec. I brought my little cab 'cos I knew the hump was going to be a pain, and the PA would take care of FOH. We got to the venue to find the most tin-pot PA in place. PA guy (pointing at the stage box): 'There's your ins for the desk'. Us: 'Err....' PA guy: 'You do have XLRs with you, don't you?' Us: 'No. You're doing the PA. Not us.' Eventually we cobble something together, during which it becomes apparent there are no channels / mics available to put the drums or bass through the PA. Ah, well. At some point, I ask when the monitors are arriving. PA guy: 'No monitors. Sorry.' So, the theme of the day was to keep the volume down.. basically 'cos we had no choice. And it actually worked out OK in the end. Incidentally, situations like this are one of the reasons I don't fancy going down the IEM route. At least I had something with me.6 points

There will be those who knock him, but I hope I'm able to do a +2hr set to that standard when I'm 80...having done a gig the night before.6 points

Shh now. We are living on the edge of the end of a golden era. We will never be able to see these historical powerhouses perform again… and in ten to twenty years time, none of these folks that paved modern music as we know it will exist - nor will there be an equivalent. instead it will be all Cowel douchery. I don’t know about you, I’d rather be listening to off key legends than products from the reality pop machine.5 points

He might have incredible but I’m sure he has had a hell of a lot of stress in his life: the death of the love of his life Linda, divorce from the one legged, gold digger Heather Mills and I would have said Yoko Ono but after watching Get Back I’m not so sure now.5 points

Macca, working at 80, something many will experience inThe near future…..😇 Personally thought the band and performance was excellent. No miming, odd wee wobble, but just magical. Noel Gallagher said something profound earlier along the likes of, “I’m just blown away seeing kids sing and rock out to songs I wrote years before they were born. Try being McCartney…..5 points

Don't think I've put mine on here yet. Here's my 2006 Stingray 5HHin Honeyburst. This is an early run,so the back pickup is wired in series nor parallel. It still got that unmistakable ray bounce and growl but its a smoother/darker sound nd with the other pickup ive found it a really useful tone. They changed it to parallel wiring in 2008 I think when they released the Sterling 5HH which see the series settings. It had a Dark Tortoise Guard on it,but I've recently has a Dark red one made as I feel it complements the finish bètter.5 points

So a good few weeks ago, I asked on basschat if anyone local to Blackburn fancied a gig. @Dankologyand @mr zed got in touch, so we had our lineup! We managed to run it ourselves - Andy/Waking Day brought their lovely PA Yousef/Dead Tenant brought lights and monitors/cameras (very posh) we brought drums/bass rig. All ran impressively smoothly - sound was great. Weather was a bit overcast, but I’d say 100-130 people passed through in a big tent. Absolutely loved both bands - Great use of Bass VI/Jazz by Yousef - some gorgeous chords and lovely songs. Andy and Waking day are just a slick unit - all played so well - Sadowsky Will Lee sounding mega. A great day was had by all!4 points

FOR SALE : Pedulla Pentabuzz, serial #7619, 2000 build This Pentabuzz has been seen before here – I traded it from bassatnight last year (he was an absolutely excellent seller !), and it was on sale at Bass Direct at one point. It is a fabulous experience to play and to listen to, and I will never own a better instrument. However, I want to refocus my collection to 70s / 80s basses only, so something has to give… The best way I can describe the Pentabuzz is that is like an ‘uber-fretless’ ; it somehow encapsulates everything that fretlesses are all about, and takes it to the next level The sound is unique and highly distinctive, ‘maximum fretless’ - even before plugging it in. I think this is down to the through neck, combined with the epoxy – coated fretboard, which is as smooth as glass and is an intoxicating recipe for seamless glides, wobbles, mwaahs and growls. It is the feeling of total expressive freedom, and because the action can be set so low (in fact, it has to be, to get the trademark Pentabuzz growl), it is just so very fast to play. The Bartolinis and active tone controls allow pretty much any sound to be dialled in. The low B is not there for special effects, it is articulate and clear, and just becomes part of the overall sonic pallette. (I had never played a 5 string before, but it soon becomes second nature). The spec is as follows : everything works. It has a couple of miniscule lacquer pocks, a bit of checking on the back, and that is it – see the photos · 4A flame maple body in turquoise trans. Finish, maple through neck, epoxy / polyester fingerboard · 34” scale, double acting truss bar · 19mm string spacing at bridge (but adjustable) · Controls : volume, pan, bass boost / cut, treble boost / cut, mid boost / cut (toggle) · Gloss poly finish, gold plated hardware It comes with a nice robust case, although I have never taken it out of the house, apart from to photograph it… I’m not completely sure I want to sell it, because there won’t be any more of these made, but isn’t that always the way ! I would be interested in a trade for something like a pre EB Sabre fretless, if there are any around ! Any questions – please ask – thanks Chris4 points

Micro heads and neodymium speakers kept me in the game for several years, as I was no longer able or interested to carry the heavy weight alternatives. Very grateful to companies that had the foresight to research and develop this technology.4 points

Paul McCartney is the best thing about Glastonbury so far for me. Tight band, Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen flying in from the US just to play with him. As others have said, the man’s a National Treasure. What a back catalogue, I mean how does he begin to pick out 30 or so songs to play from that body of work? He’s 80, playing for nearly 3 hours and he loves what he’s doing with energy and enthusiasm. Amazing to see the whole crowd, young and old, singing along to Beatles songs written over 50 years ago. For my money Lennon and McCartney were the greatest songwriters of all time though, by a mile, absolutely timeless.4 points

Which forum are the Sleaford Mods from (Farming Chat??) 😂😂👍 I’ll collect me coat (PS I quite like ska and stuff, really). Last night I watched the Paul McCartney show - I was completely captivated and blown away by it - quite a moving experience for me and others I’ve spoken to who have grown from teenage to elderly alongside his music since the late 60s - fantastic band - particularly liked Abe Laboriel Jnr’s drumming but singing also. The whole band was great to be fair and even the guesting from Dave Groll and Bruce Forsyth was dealt with v tastefully - including the guitar battle (5 guitarists) in the last number (the wonderful medley from Abbey Road). I could forgive the occasional lapse from sound (vocal volumes not being there for the first phrase sometimes - I presume they were turning off mikes to avoid back line bleed). Macca’s voice was suffering tour rigours a little I thought but these are nit picking - it was effin brilliant and the look of elation on the faces in the audience was equally moving. National treasure or what!!! I loved the Ashdown/60s P bass sound which was quite high in the mix at times as well as Macca’s Höfner (also quite audible). It’s good the sound people have recognised that not all band’s bass players just play root 8th notes the whole time and are thus mixed somewhere alongside the kick drum - McCartney (and also noticeable with Noel Gallagher), the bass parts often form a fundamental counter melody/harmony and thus mixing alongside the kick drum either results in that part of the performance being insufficiently audible (thus ruining the whole thing) or the kick drum being miles too loud (similarly ruining it - though at least you might hear the bass part well). I dread to think what would happen if some of these sound guys got anywhere near an orchestra!! Whilst recognising they have a majorly difficult job in such a huge outdoor arena. The bass is, of course, one of the most important parts in many types of music (and not sub boom!! It ain’t drum n bass 😀😀😀 unless, of course, it is….😂😂)4 points

For me Roisin Murphy’s set fukin killed…. anyone got a line on her bass player?? Thought he (and the rest of the band) did an amazing job. If you haven’t seen it-watch it!4 points

Quick update... Typical me, I got back from my jollies with a shiny new Ampeg SCR waiting for me. I love it! P bass with flats + SCR w/ ultra lo + a flat ABM600 + Barefaced SuperCompact is something special. All other bass/amp/cab/EQ combinations are in the same ballpark. Thanks all!4 points

Sorry mate but that example you described is far from normal. We have all had nights like that but it's the good ones that make up for it. I certainly can look back and laugh at some of the situations we have found ourselves in over the years.4 points

Oh dear... what a 'mare! We turned up for a pub gig Saturday afternoon to be asked would we mind playing outdoors, at the bottom of the beer garden? 'Bottom of the beer garden' was exactly that - 50m from power (we can get you some extensions), no cover (there's a gazebo in the shed), nothing to stand drums on (do you want us to get some cardboard boxes); we politely declined and retreated to play in the bar... 1 hour later the heavens opened!4 points

My ABM arrived on Thursday I think. Gigged it last night. Holy moly. What a sound!!!! Musicman Stingray, slight dip in the mids on the amp, ramping up the mids on the bass onboard EQ for certain songs and wow. The authority to the bass sound is immense. I love it! I thought my Rootmaster was great but the ABM is a cut above.4 points

Massive thanks to @Old Man Riva for going well above and beyond, not only did Mick sort me a parking permit, he gave me alternative options in case the road was full and made sure the tube was running for us. Top man, thanks 🙏🏻 MiniMert loved the gig (and to be fair so did I) 😀4 points

Same here - thought it was excellent. His band are just so good, and Springsteen & Dave Grohl looked to be enjoying it too. Held my complete attention for over 2.5 hours ( despite the dodgy vocal mix etc). Brilliant.4 points

Well Mr McCartney there were a few early strange song choices and the sound wasn’t always brilliant but what a great headlining performance and the cameos from Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen were pure genius as was Live And Let Die. 80 years old !! Bloody amazing performance and worth waiting three years for 👏👏👏4 points

Used a GK MB210II combo for a while. 350watts in 2x10 speakers and 500 with extension. Sounds great, very clear tone, but using the boost volume adds a nice bit of grit. It has a really nice look too,not too modern. I recently joined a rock covers band with 2 guitars, so bought a matching CX115 cab, to get the full 500 watts. My one gripe is it's so damn heavy, so not sure how long I'll continue with this setup, but it really does sound great.4 points

I agree, I’d know the difference between my own two amps (Ashdown ABM600 & RM500) if I were on a very large stage, but would I be able to tell if I walked into a venue if a bassist was using Class D or A/B without looking at the set up, well I very much doubt it. If anything I think this thread is a bit unfair on Class D amps, they’re not full valve, they’re not A/B, so maybe we should look at them for what they actually are, rather than what they aren’t. I know my gigging life has been made a lot easier thanks to Class D amps, although I do prefer to use my A/B amp if possible.4 points

40 minutes ( meant to be an hour) at the Sun Inn Frome, this afternoon. We went out as a Trio, normally 6 piece so I suggested we call ourselves 50 cent....Appreciative audience and it was nice to break the material back down to acoustic guitar, bass and harmonica and 2 vox. House Soundman has finally found his mojo so he had a DI box and put me through into the PA. We'd have done 45 minutes but I was waiting for the previous band's Bassist to undo his vintage fender hard case, (held together with a bungee cord) insert his 70's Jazz, reverse the proceedure and generally faff around before moving out of the way. The rest of our band were ready but I then had to set up my amp for the DI and tune. Don't think he even realised that in a quick change you move your stuff off the stage area ASAP and pack your precious Bass off the bleedin stage and don't impede others....4 points

A hot and sweaty one last night at The Rusty Nail in Aberdeen with my covers band Nine Lives. Good turnout with plenty folk getting up and having a dance/general move around to the music. Got saved by the singer from being completely wiped out by a drunk lady overestimating her powers of balance and toppling towards me fast. Singer grabbed her outstreched hand as she and gravity conspired to make me part of the table behind me. The perils of performing at floor level! She managed to stand on my tuner pedal as she bumped into me, briefly knocking me out of the game physically and sonically but we kept going. Still, she continued to be rather annoying througout the gig until some of the rest of the giggoers "suggested" to her that she leave. There's always one, right? Played really well and got a lot of good comments afterwards. Played the Jack Casady through the 2x1x10" frankenrig.3 points

Just discovered this thread. Here is my 32 scale Aria, bought in ‘88. It’s a Thor Sound, Aria Pro 2 TSB400. Had to replace the knobs as one of the originals sheared off when it fell over one day. Needs an overhaul and some tlc as my go to bass these days is a MIJ Fender Precision, but I wouldn’t part with as it was my first ever bass guitar.3 points

First outdoor gig for several years yesterday afternoon at the Lostwithiel Gin Festival. A relatively small event but a very good crowd who obviously appreciated the music. Great covered stage and PA set-up however it was in a well shaded part of the ground adjacent to the River Fowey. There was a very strong cold wind blowing straight through the stage so it was bl@@dy nithering. I sat around wearing 4 layers and gloves for an hour before our set and I was still cold. In fact my hands were still cold at the end. Ridiculous because at the other end of the ground there were no trees, brilliant sunshine and quite warm. Still it was Cornwall after all. I took my trusty Sadowsky PJ, Backbeat and a recently acquired Tech21 Fly-rig so I was travelling light for our 90-minute set. One great piece of news is that the band leader has decided we should dispense with his drum tracks and find a drummer. Hallelujah.3 points
