I'm relatively new to this forum, or at least being active on here. I joined recently to sell some gear and 48 hours from listing 2 basses I had sold them. Just a note to say that this is a great forum full of like minded and generally sound people and I will be trying to get into the stuff that goes on a little more over the coming months. it's a great place to do business and with such great people. Just to be transparent, I work for Yamaha, my role being to sell Yamaha, Ampeg and Line 6 products. Any help I can offer in that area, then I will do my best, I might even be able to run a few prototypes past you for some opinions here and there. Obviously this is not an official connection, it's my personal account and not endorsed by my employer, due to legal compliance there's only so far I can go with matters, but i will do my best. Thanks Basschat, impressed.18 points

2012 Pedulla Rapture JJ in Tobacco Sunburst. The best jazz bass i've ever played, super light and the neck is really comfortable. I imported this from Canada in 2016 however it just sits in its case not getting the love it deserves. It's in overall great condition, recently setup with DR Sunbeams with 2 very minor blemishes (see photos). Not sure I want to let this go to be honest but it really should be played more. Collection from Nottingham preferred, although I'm willing to meet half way. Unfortunately I'm not willing to ship outside the UK. No trades14 points

No idea if he's in a band at the moment. There's a video of his online where he talks about his 'journey' In a nutshell he started playing at school, went on to spend several years studying at a prestigous US music college at which point he was also gigging seven days a week in multiple bands in different genres. When he eventually returned to the UK he found himself unable to successfully monetise his skills until he got a lucky break when Davey504 featured him in one of his vids. Since then Youtube has been his main musical focus. Fairplay to him for finding a way to make a living doing what he loves.12 points

Exactly. It makes me a little sad when I see the comments "but is he in a band?", "technically brilliant but is he a musician?"... Yup, I'm sure he'd be completely lost playing Sex On Fire at the Red Lion on Saturday night... Come on guys...11 points

This guy has a fantastic level of skill, coupled with a high degree of musical ability. He's a fantastic bass player. I'm happy for anyone who can make a living out of playing bass. Good on em.10 points

Well, he can play, that's for certain, love seeing people who can do that sh*t, would I watch it twice? No. Can I remember a single thing he played? No. Can I play like that? No. Virtuoso playing for it's own sake is a bit of a dead end for me, I can't stand a lot of the stuff Jaco did solo, but his ensemble work with other artists is stunning. You take your joy where you find it I suppose.7 points

Skill level is unbelievable, but as with all these bass players who fly about over 6 - 10 strings and do all sorts of playing I just cant help but think a guitar or piano is more suited to that music.6 points

Is this the edge of human Capability right here on our instrument? If it was anyone else but him I would be sure it has been sped up... However having watched enough of his playing I think he may well just be the most technically accomplished bass player on the planet right now.5 points

Second to last gig with the jazz standards quartet last night, finally got to play after a Covid case in the band. Good crowd but a bit thinner than normal, mostly people of a certain age who are nervous about Covid which has had a surge in this area recently. All in all it went well but BL (sax and clarinet) was very tense and didn't play as well as he usually does but no disasters, it was a weird vibe knowing that after 11 years we are just about done. One more gig on the 20th before the singer/keyboard moves out of the area, it has been a good run.5 points

Define 'visual performance'. I much prefer the sobre aspect of the video above to the exuberant visuals that many bands and players come up with. A seated orchestra pumping out Schubert's Ninth doesn't need pyrotechnics, for me. I'd be just as happy listening to performances such as that above, eyes wide shut.5 points

I had a great idea to build a 5-string bass. 35", 19 mm spacing etc. But as things tend to change every now and then... I met a luthier who has lots of ideas and makes not so ordinary basses. Well, after lots of talk we decided he follows the wood and I will source/make the metal parts. It was elsewhere here, where the tuning part is on its way. Now here are few photos of the tuner(s). The instrument may still be a 5-string, and has 19 mm spacing, but scale length has turned to 32", neck has been NT and bolt-on, and let's see...4 points

C&P from the dusty end of basschat circa 2014: Basschat fans everywhere will remember this thread about the Blockheads bassist selling his Fender Jazz on eBay So Norman gave his guitar to Andy (Baxter) to sell, who lists it on eBay the link gets posted on Basschat (thanks to BC user thebrig!) I show the link to my bassist pal Matt Matt shows the link to his dad and bass tutor Laurence Canty Laurence shows the link to his ex-student Colin Colin contacts Andy and puts a deposit down, and subsequently buys the bass. And that's the story of how Colin Greenwood out of Radiohead bought Blockhead Norman Watt-Roy's 1962 Shoreline Gold Fender Jazz bass. Also, (different story), after John Giblin playing a Takamine TB-10 with Kate Bush in her 2014 shows, I decide to find a Takamine TB-10 for myself somehow. Time passes, stuff happens, yada yada, I've now got John Giblin's Takamine TB-10 from the Kate Bush shows.4 points

I think the piece is incredibly musical, there is harmonic complexity there, the chord progression is great, everything flows wonderfully from a musical point of view etc etc. If anything it’s a shame it isn’t longer, but then that’s the nature of carving out a career in music nowadays (as mentioned earlier). Reminds me of Polyphia. Regardless, without taking anything away from Charles (he’s way more technically able than I’ll ever be), I’d like to know how it was recorded. Whether it’s a single take or a multi-take piece. I suspect the latter, which somewhat dulls the ‘most technically able bassist on the planet’ hyperbole, but doesn’t take anything away from the fact is a wonderfully musical piece. Si4 points

Absolutely... He's actually a very good Pianist as well, plus he's done a good bit of time in the trenches with bands, tours and sessions, so defiantly not a novice regarding the shenanigans of a working musician. I believe he has over one million subscribers to his YouTube channel, so clearly has a very good target audience. I noticed he has other things on the go judging by his links below. Good luck to him.4 points

I would! And I think his playing is extremely musical - though there seems to be a school of thought that thinks only simple ditties or straight-ahead riffs are musical, everything else is showing off. Personally I celebrate talent and have no problem with complexity or even atonality (which Charlie doesn't really do, more's the pity!), though ultimately it's down to taste... And a certain level of hypocrisy; while I celebrate talent and complexity in jazz or funk, when prog becomes even slightly folky I run screaming! Frinstance, I loves a bit of Genital Giant, until they start getting all fa diddly diddly wee, then I hates 'em. Similarly, I can't be doing with any Genesis at all - praps because it's twee pop ("Lonely Fart") or English-centric and a touch folky. Now if they had a hint of The Funk it might be a different matter...4 points

Fender Mustang Bass made in 1972 in an original and well used condition, with plenty of bumps, bruises, dings, paint checking and discolouration. The blue finish has turned to a petrol green colour but the original colour can be seen under the bridge, neck pocket and pickguard. A previous owner had used glue under the pickguard to try and prevent warping and shrinkage (not the first time I have heard of this being done!) but thankfully most of the original paint remains, albeit somewhat messy. There are two areas where the top layer of the pickguard has split around two screws but it is still secure and does not go through the other 2 plys. The ink stamps date the bass to 1972 and the pots to 6th week, also 1972. The frets are in good shape, the fingerboard has some very nice grain and the truss rod turns freely in both directions. The tuners work well but have some tarnishing as expected, likewise the bridge which still has the facility to add foam mutes if required. The tug bar has a split and only one screw but is the original reddish coloured version. I have always liked the red shadow these leave on light coloured pickguards! It has a new set of La Bella MUS flatwounds which really do suit the bass and ensure a decent low end thump! The bass weighs in at a mere 3.25kgs or 7 and a bit pounds. Sadly I have discovered that short scale basses are just not for me and will stick to long scale but no doubt in a few years when I am even more decrepit, I’ll regret letting this go! To ensure any prospective buyer is happy, I would much prefer this to be a collection only. I would also much prefer a straight sale but would be willing to consider a lower priced Precision or Jazz as a part exchange. Please feel free to ask for any further information!3 points

I've just played it again, with only my PC screen, so no 'visuals', and, for my part, I found it has its own musical validity, however it was produced (by MIDI piano-roll, keys, bass or whatever...); it was simply too short, s'all, being maybe simply a showcase number. I don't subscribe to this notion of having to be 'impressed' with everything (or even anything..!). It's good, musically on its own merits, in my view. Whether one likes it or not is another matter, of course, but I equally watched the recently-posted videos of a couple of 'metal' bands, with lady virtuosi, and I know what I'd rather listen to (and watch..!). To each his/her own, but 'tape à l'oeil' doesn't go far with me, I'm afraid.3 points
-
Exactly! Which is why the player has to put it out on YouTube rather than a non-visual medium. Simply as a composition it's not particularly musical or interesting. The interesting thing is that he has made it more difficult for himself by playing it on a "inappropriate" instrument. Without being able to see that no-one would be even slightly impressed.3 points

I think he plays great. Musically, he quite easily keeps my attention throughout his videos. Plus, he keeps them at a sensible length.3 points

As the title suggests, this should probably be in feedback, but it's too nice and life affirming a story so here goes..... I sold a couple of items to one of our long-standing elder statesmen @Oldman a while back. We haggled over prices a little and money went back and forth. Eventually we agreed things and I mentioned to him that I was taking my young 'uns Ella and Katie into town to spend the cash he'd sent. All done Today a card arrived addressed to me. The girls had their birthdays recently and I assumed that it was a late card and that I knew who it was from, so I passed it to them and said "This is for you girls". They both ripped apart the envelop and showed me two gift vouchers with their names on and I said "Is it from .....?" to which they replied "It's got something to do with an old man Daddy". We read the card together and given we were having a bit of a crap morning (it's a very first world problem we're currently dealing with BTW but nonetheless a crap morning), as a family we all sat down and said 'Wow, that has made our month" The internet's a funny place, we build sometimes good and sometimes problematic relationships with people we've never met (I've done both), but all too often it's at arm's length and lacks real emotional clout. Brian @Oldman, thank you so much for this, it made us smile and reaffirmed our faith that the world is a great place, and reminded my daughters that kindness is a really important thing 👍 Chris3 points

Bit of an update. Ultimately there was too much mud for a band setting so I gave the bass a makeover. Routed the edges and added contours, added a regular p bass pickup, painted it halford matt black and added a pickguard to hide the old cavity.3 points

Last year I came into a little bit of money, and so naturally my mind turned to basses. I'd played and gigged almost solely, for 15 years, with a Godin PJ that I picked up from a charity shop as a teenager, but I'd always loved the idea of a real Fender P Bass. I've always loved the precision sound. I walked out of PMT not soon after with a spanking new Pro ii P Bass, which I think sounds lovely, and plays well. After a year of gigging though, I like it, but can't say I absolutely love it. I just don't feel like it's 'the one' if that makes sense? And for the money it costs, it really needs to be my main bass for many years to come. Well, today I had a play on this lovely thing, and was absolutely smitten. I know it's just a p bass copy, but it played so beautifully, sounded warm and rich, and had a lovely low action. It's a 2021 made in Japan version of the Hard Puncher. £1,100. It was light, too. Am I mad for wanting to sell the Pro ii, take the depreciation loss and get the Tokai? Has anyone got any experience with these? Is this just the start of the endless GAS that, so far, I've largely avoided? Opinions welcome!2 points

Updated this - a smaller expression pedal for A/B switching on the Poly Octave, a Bass Blogger for fuzz. I'm still not convinced there's any point having the Q-Tron on the board as I don't use it in my current band, could fit at least couple in that space! It's only a matter of time before I try a different compressor, not really feeling the M87 - it's a bit lifeless. I'm considering a micro mixer to combine the dry and effect outputs from the Blogger, there's a little Behringer job that would fit in the top-left corner...2 points

Don't think anybody mentioned 4Hero yet. Thier "Creating Patterns" is a great record, more song based, and slightly less one dimensional than a lot (of the club based tracks). Photek's "Modus Operandi" and Goldie's "Timeless" also bear repeated listening. L.T.J. Bukem's "Logical Progression" compilation was also a favourite of mine back in the day, for the "intelligent" d'n'b vibe.2 points
